I kinda dig the idea of barging in as Gareth, Slayer of the Ghoul King, but can't miss an opportunity to get in the head of a fish-god.
Oh? Heh, I'm kind of regretting that so many people voted for a chapter from his perspective. That was annoying to write.
It seems like gods come into Elys's life left and right. Her uncle's a god, a time goddess alters history to save her, her new pet's a god...
Well, there are a lot of gods in this setting. Elys is a special person (the Chosen of Mishrak), so it stands to reason that she'd come into contact with a lot of them. But yeah, there are a lot of them.
I refer you back to my first post:
The world is teeming with gods. There are the great gods of mountains, cities and rivers. And there are smaller gods: household gods; wild animal spirits; the lesser gods of fields, trees and hedgerow. Sometimes it seems as if every pebble, wildflower and grain of sand has its own god. And yet, even in this world of gods and monsters and super-powerful beings, humans are the dominant species. They are the true masters of the world; they have done the most to tear it apart.
So yeah...

"I Know the Human Being and Fish Can Coexist Peacefully."
Geletzilajakika I am. Eel god. Resplendent one. Ancient and watchful.
Mortal I was, long ago. Unending life, magic, and the blessing of greater gods elevated me. Made me more than I was born to be. Made me powerful and clever. I am… what I have become.
Time passes. Hundreds of days. Thousands. Eternally, I endure. What was it like to be mortal? To be hungry and afraid? To always be fleeing? Sometimes, I forget. Forget what my people suffer, why they cry out for my help, and why… why should I care? To remember, I garb myself in mortal flesh. Not often. Once in a while. Live with my people. Share their fears and delights. Know pain and horror. Die. And then rise again, revitalized.
Teach my people to survive. To evade traps and predators. To be quick and clever. Over and over, I teach them.
Humans. Very clever. Build better and better traps. Very dangerous. Rapacious. Unchecked, they take more than they need to eat, until the seas are empty of life. That is what I fear. Why I fear them. Why other gods band against them.
Should I hate them? Perhaps. They're not evil, just uncaring. But… to those they've slaughtered, that is no comfort. Kill all the fish in the "Sea of Squalls"? They'd complain about not having any more fish to eat. To them, it wouldn't be a tragedy. Just an inconvenience.
Fear them. Avoid them if you can.
One of them tried to help me. A human child. Female. Tried to save me. While I was mortal, recently. Put me in a tiny jar. No room to move. But still… good intentions. Marginally better than being eaten.
She spoke to me. Mind to mind. A rare gift. Magic, given to her by Mishrak. The dragon god. Lord of the deep. Of the western sea. His chosen, she was. Why her? Because of her good intentions? Because of her innocence? Because of her high rank? No… I don't think the dragon god values those things.
Tried to warn her. About the spirits of the sea who prey on humans. Sea Ghouls. Barnacle Men. Drowned Ones. Wormed their way into her little town. Infested its dark places, persuaded some weak and cowardly humans to worship them. She offered me freedom if I helped find them. Thought she could defeat them, or her guardians could. Brave. Not especially clever, but brave.
Offered my help. Said I could sense them nearby, underground. After that, waiting. For hours. Still stuck in a jar, waiting.
At last, I was summoned. To aid one of her companions. A necromancer. Female. Tried to sneak into the Sea Ghouls' lair. Was caught. Asked for my help. To escape. To survive.
Why should I aid her? Humans… I don't much like them. But Sea Ghouls are worse. Parasites. Eaters of souls. End life, even the possibility for life. Destroy everything. I despise them. Do I need a reason to fight them?
Yes, humans are selfish. Self-centred. Self-absorbed. But they don't destroy souls. Necromancers, servants of the death god. They try to preserve souls. I approve.
Agreed to aid her, to fight alongside her. Even though she insisted on lecturing me. Told me the dangers of taking a mortal avatar. She was in shock? Possibly.
Blasted the Sea Ghouls with my lightning. Charged at them. Biting. Ripped them to shreds. Coiled around them, crushing and constricting. They died, but not quickly.
They fought back. Used telekinesis like a hammer. Sprayed water at me. Most of their attacks I shrugged off, or managed to dodge. Water washed over me, doing no harm. Their telekinesis bounced off my magical shields. Impervious, I was.
But my ally wasn't. Realised they couldn't harm me, so they concentrated on her. As I tore one of them apart, the others attacked her. Battered her until she was unconscious on the floor.
I continued to fight. Killed a dozen Sea Ghouls. The rest retreated. But it didn't matter. I couldn't keep my promise. Failed to give her the aid she needed.
What to do? Continue down the passage and slay the rest of them? Or carry the necromancer back to her friends, so they could try to save her?
Didn't have to make that decision. It was made for me. Two older humans came down the passage. Grey, bearded man. Mature woman with hair severely tied back.
'Belle!' said the woman, running to my fallen ally, splashing through puddles. 'Hold on! Don't let it end like this!'
Grey man drew his sword, looked at me, and said, 'Who are you?'
'Eel god. Geletzilajakika,' said I. 'Was summoned to aid in battle against the Sea Ghouls.'
'Gel… ugh, I'm just going to call you Gelly,' said grey man. 'You're a gellied eel. Fine.' He let out a long sigh. 'Fine. Where are the Sea Ghouls?'
'Killed most of them. Only a few escaped. Down below, in their lair.'
'Hmm. Maybe you did,' said grey man, looking at the thick vapour wafting through the tunnel.
'Gareth,' said the woman, very distressed. 'Belle's not breathing. I think she's… she's gone.'
The grey man let out a cry like a wounded animal. Warily, I backed away.
