Chapter Five - BCs Courier Arc

Chapter Five
- - -

You and Weigh pedaled as quickly as possible while Rose acted as an impromptu scout, watching and hoping that there'd be no Clanners following. Luckily for all involved, there were none, so the three of you stopped at the first cafe you can find (which turned out to be a place named the Jazzy Goose) for refreshments and a refresh on what just happened. After locking the bikes, settling down, and ordering food and drinks you turn to Rose and Weigh and asked the first and most obvious question. What just happened?

Weigh gave a shrug as he looked longingly at the kitchen, while Rose seemed to squirm for a moment before answering, which kind of shocked you given how much she was a bitchin' fighter. "You see, I don't know the full story, but enough to get across the basics. Essentially the BCs had been working in the farside for years as you already know, but what you didn't know is that the Dragon Clan is run by these intensely powerful fighters, who have beating us in pitched battles repeatedly. A couple years ago, we were on even footing with the Clan, although even back in those days they were fierce fighters. But these new guys, I don't know what to tell you, it was shocking the change. Where once it was even, now we lost everywhere, everytime. I don't know the dude whose nose I broke, but he's one of them, although the weakest. I've heard him called Goldtooth, and he's a nasty and creepy guy."

Rose was interrupted by the arrival of much needed food and drink, which was quickly inhaled by all three parties. It was quiet as you ate, dropping the topic with Rose for now while the trio sought to replenish themselves. During that time you were lost in thought between mouthfuls, thinking about how you fought off those Clanners easily. That said, their punches were uncommonly powerful and your Slip-Not Palm was a savior, further they were all boxers, who sought to bring themselves close for the punch, denying you room for your proper knee tosses, although some were delivered with harsh and painful results. Further, that roundhouse kick was a beauty even in it's haste and rushed execution, you most certainly needed to continue learning that, maybe even get a proper teacher. Does Master Trigger know roundhouse kicks?

Your thoughts were broken by Weigh standing up, excusing himself for the washroom. Looking at Rose, she sat slightly straighter before continuing where you two left off prior to the food. "I know exactly why I was sent to the Clanners, if you were going to ask me. My brothers, Freckles, might seem like a serene individual, but he's not exactly trustworthy. This wasn't the first peace attempt between the Clanners and the BCs. About a month ago, although this happened on the farside, there was a gathering of minor important people of the Clanners with Freckles. Well, Frecks thought he could get the upper hand, beat and captured the ambassadors and blackmailed the Clan for his land back. For their worth, the Clanners sent back the BCs' messenger in his tighty whities, and intensified their war ever since. I suspect that this was an attempt by the Clan to humiliate my brother. But I'm going to give that little shit a piece of my mind and a whole of my fist in his mouth after being treated by that creep. Frecks ain't going to see what's coming."

Rose seemed to be lost in thought through most of the past monologue, and came back to the present and looked at you. Smiling wide, she reached over and you shook hands. "Now that I know you a little, I guess we have never been properly introduced. I'm Rosaline Amber, but you can continue calling me Rose. Thanks for helping me out there, I don't know what I'd do if it was just me. Probably have to kick your ass as well as everyone." She laughs bitterly, although you can't be totally sure if the last part was a joke or serious. As Weigh came back and sat down, Rose gave him a glare, although it was a tad less than the vicious looks he got during the initial journey over to the Clanner meeting. Weigh, finished with his eating, began to participate in the conversation.

"Well, as far as I can sees it, we have two choices. Go to the BCs' compound and kick some booty, which I suspect Rose is planning to do." Weigh winked baitingly at Rose, who in turn punched him hard enough to knock him off the chair. Getting up, he whined a tad "Jesus Rosie, it's a damn joke, get over yourself." to which Rose retorted "Stop being creepy you sludgeman and I'll stop giving you raccoon goggles." Weigh, massaging his eye, continued off where he was prior, although with much more pain in his one eye, "Anywho, the other choice is leave this polite young women to her business, go home, and get paid. I mean we're doing that anyways regardless." Leering out the one eye searching for another fist to come his way, Weigh sighed. "Your choice whichever, although I'm much more interested in going home." Rose shrugged "I'm going to kick my brother's ass whichever you do, so it depends on whether you want to watch or go home and get paid without seeing the guy who sent you into the jaws of the enemy get his due. Your choice dude."

You thought deeply before you made your [CHOICE].

Still open for more warm bodies? I am intrigued although my knowledge of Wuxia is nonexistent.

I was raised Southside of Chicago and the story so far resonates strongly with my childhood. I spent a lot of it rushing to watch"Kung-fu Gold theater" and studied karate basics (falling, blocks, and basic kicks and punches) at my father's knee. He was a student of John Keehan's (AKA Count Dante), under Ed Miller. You have done well if you were shooting for a dark gritty setting reminiscent of Chicago's Dojo wars.

Chapter Six - BCs Courier Arc Conclusion

Chapter Six
- - -

After a moment of thought, you nodded and said how you would join Rose on her way to meet with her brother. Weigh gave a huff, crossed, his arms and smoldered for a moment before inputting. "Fine, if y'all gunna end it might as well come along, afore you do something stupid and need an extra set of hands." Thus after paying for the bill of you and Rose (who had no money), the three of you got on your bikes and set off to that strongly defended dojo to make a ruckus.

Upon arriving, it was starting to get dark, and you were starving. Should have ate more at the cafe, but it would have to do. You probably burned hella amount of fat between the fighting, running, and pedaling. You would eat a horse when you got home, even if would only be a small one. Your train of thought continued along those lines as Rose dismounted and strode confidently and defiantly ahead, crashing through the doors set between too dumbfounded guards, forcing you and Weigh to hurry along before you were left behind. As you got to Rose and matched her pace, stepping in unison off her flanks, you noticed above the rumble in your stomach that word had apparently spread and people were gathering around you. Obviously Rose wasn't meant to return whatsoever, so her appearance was the cause for much alarm.

Rose simply glowered more as more members of the BCs gathered, and you could almost see the darkness of her anger seeping from her skull as she all but front-kicked the office door open. All Freckles, who was obviously in a very serious meeting, could get out of his mouth before Rose's fist tried very hard to give it a third hole was "Whatareyoudoinghere?!" Freckles' guards stepped forward and hesitated, unsure of how to react to a clear familial dispute, as Freckles got back on his feet. Hands up, palms out in supplication, Freckles spoke very quickly to his very angry sister. "Ok, ok, that wasn't exactly kosher. But hear me out, it wasn't that bad was it? We ...." which Rose, unimpressed by Freckles' words so far delivered a boot into Freckles' tender under regions, causing a low groan from the gathered peanut gallery (you included) and a much louder groan from Freckles himself. Between gasps, and with a very threatening boot near his nose, Freckles spoke quicker (impressively) in the grim hope of warding off his sister's assault with his words. "Stop, I'll talk. The Clan threatened to bomb the dojo if I didn't give them a proper offering, and given how terrible they were I assumed it would be true. I thought you'd be able to take care of yourself within the Clan while securing peace. I swear Ro' that's it. Stopping hitting me."

Rose glared at her brother, making you wonder exactly how this sniffling individual became a Master. You'd have to think on that later, as Rose just spit in her brother's general direction in response. She growled at him "Well you obviously were mistaken, because they attempted to do something to me. Luckily for me I broke the nose of Goldtooth and made it out of there thanks to another gang's peeps. I suspect the Clanners won't forget or forgive this, but that's your problem, isn't it." Rose strode away, turning to you and making it very clear she was leaving. As the BCs flooded into the room to bring up their suddenly very pale Master, you and Weigh followed Rose out.

After you've left the building, you stop at a teeny city green-space. You could quite clearly see tears of frustration welling up in her eyes, but don't make a comment. The silence is a tad long, a tad awkward, but given what you just saw you don't say anything. It would be broken up by Rose walking over to a nearby public telephone, tearing out a page of the paper and writing something down before giving it to you. Looking at it you see it's a phone number. Looking back Rose seems much calmer. "Thanks you guys, I really appreciate you being there. That's my home number, call me up if you ever need anything, I'll see what I can do." Rose shakes both your hands and leaves, a whirlwind from beginning to end. Turning to Weigh, he just shrugs. "When I knew her, this is erry day. Better get used to it. Lets get home and get paid." You nod, lets end this saga once and for all.

-

It's night by the time you stumble past the guards behind Master Trigger's dojo, now not only hungry but also sore. The hits you took throb, and you know you'll be bruised in the morning. With heavy eyelids, you look for Fuzzy, finding him fairly quickly thanks to that god awful facial hair of his. Walking over, you tiredly tell him you've completed your duties. Fuzzy raises an eyebrow "You feeling good? You look like crap. I thought it was a plum job." You wave him off, you'll tell him tomorrow, just pay me. Fuzzy nods, knowing exactly how that feels. Pulling a not insignificant bag of coinage from a lock box, he hands it to you. You look at the quadrupled bagged jumble of lose or small change and sigh, you'd knew you'd get this but it's still disappointed. You were about to comment, but Weigh, who you totally forgot was also there, spoke first. "Man, one of these days you gotta pay us with proper bills, it can't be that difficult to exchange it at the bank." The amount of surprise in Fuzzy's eyes, indicating that he'd never actually thought of that, was enough for now. You had a long day and you'd be back tomorrow anywho, given they essentially live in your backyard.

Giving a tired excuse to leave, you and Weigh slowly climb up your stairs and order a pizza from the local place. The driver was unimpressed with paid entirely in change, but hey what are you going to do. Eating what you can, Weigh sets himself up on the couch uninvited (of course) and you wander over to bed. Falling asleep you dream of nothing, or don't dream, either way, you go into oblivion. The next while would have their own [PROJECTS], but that's for tomorrow, now you sleep.

PROJECTS - choose four (4):

Martial-based:

Train your Roundhouse Kick; incredibly useful in the fight against the Clanners, it is smart to catch up on that while you remember. Always good to diversify your martial repertoire.

Go weightlifting; there is always a need to improve your personal strength, and the devastating blows of the Clanners showed you just how much more powerful you need to become.

Go to the dojo; the human body is incredibly flexible. If you were to continue your training at Master Trigger's, perhaps you could find out something special about yourself, learn a new skill, or even just kick higher and jump farther.

Duel [Write-In]; for training, honour, or hate, there is always a reason to duel someone. Perhaps this could be a learning opportunity, or an opportunity to teach someone else a much needed lesson.

Seek tutelage under Rose; Rose is a chessboxer, and you've seen it in action to terrible effect. Broken bones galore is what you can expect of your enemies. Perhaps you could use her number to secure some proper training in the art.

Seek tutelage under Trigger; your fight with the Clanners taught you the need of improved blocking from these powerful blows. Seek out Trigger and see if he can teach you more ways to protect yourself.

Join a Karate Club; you may know Trigger Style, but you know from your school days the existence of the Clinton Karate Tournament. Your first step to getting to that would be to join a karate club.

Mental-based:

Teach yourself Pure Wudang; the books are there and you have the time. While not as guided as under a tutor, you are able to learn the basics at the least.

Teach yourself Pure Shaolin; the books are there and you have the time. While not as guided as under a tutor, you are able to learn the basics at the least.

Teach yourself Hung Ga; the books are there and you have the time. While not as guided as under a tutor, you are able to learn the basics at the least.

Seek esoteric secrets; rumors of ancient scrolls, records of long past masters, and age old technique abound. Go to the library and see what you can dig up, if you can dig anything up.

Make connections; you know the Dayers, but that's the extent of it. If you are to get better and further your cadre of martial artists, it's time to go out and find people to help you. Not all battles are won in the streets.

Get a day job; you may be a ganger and a martial artist, but Fuzzy only pays so much. Get a job, secure some regular income, and don't be worried about paying your landlord with petty change anymore.

Qi-based:

Clanner Strength; The Clanners were incredibly strong. They had no business being able to punch with such strength. Look around and see why some skinny kid can throw such hands.

Arcs:

Look up the origin of the Clanners; you've properly pissed off the Dragon Clan. Luckily they have no idea who you are beyond a bare connection to the BCs. Sometimes knowledge if half the battle, so you should find out who these people are.

Look up the origin of Master Freckles; after seeing Freckles being publicly beaten by Rose, you wonder how such a weak individual became a master. Look into the past at who Master Freckles was before he was Master Freckles.

Seek out the Guff: The Guff continue to come increase their aggressiveness, and frankly Fuzzy is tired of it. Take his job and seek out the Guff and the trouble they're making.

If you can explain why it should be on the PROJECTS list, I will certainly put it up for you to act on.

There's a moratorium on voting for 12 hrs.

I'm thinking a training montage at the moment get our fundamentals down better

-train round house kick
-Go weight lifting
These two should build on what we have, but we need to prepare a better foundation

so
-go to the Dojo for that

and

-teach yourself x

to diversify the style

@Dadarian can we get a run down on what we can expect the styles to look like in practice for this quest?

@Dadarian can we get a run down on what we can expect the styles to look like in practice for this quest?

In what sense? If you meant literally, I'll do some rolls behind the scenes on whether training is successful, and then I'll write down a paragraph or two on the efforts done and whether it succeeded or not.

If you meant what type of styles are available to learn, I'd say all of them that are practiced today. That said, some will be harder to discover, train, and get good at than others due to their exotic nature.

I meant more in the sense of what the styles 'look' like in writing.

Would Wudang be focused more on throwing or on stability? Shaolin on flexibility and adaptability ect. These are fairly broad terms.

Fighting Styles
I meant more in the sense of what the styles 'look' like in writing.

Would Wudang be focused more on throwing or on stability? Shaolin on flexibility and adaptability ect. These are fairly broad terms.

Oh. I'll list them out in this now pinned post:

Martial Styles

Wudang: Stable, upper-body dominant but also has solid kicks. Confrontational yet standing one's ground. Think an oak tree.
Shaolin: Fluid, lower-body dominant, although does contain upper-body deliveries. Avoidance yet still aggressive. Think torrent of water.
Hung Ga: Offshoot of Shaolin that abandons the fluidity while cranking up the aggression. Confrontational and aggressive but reliant on stamina to take hits. Think a strong but brittle hammer.
Kung Fu: Incredibly structured and disciplined fighting style, with a core of strength and stamina training. Prepared but not all too adaptable. Think robotic fighter.

Not throwing my vote out yet (respecting the 12 hr moratorium on votes) , but testing the waters to see if my thinking is sound while providing a spring board for myself and the other players to discuss a solid approach.

This is my spin, looking towards a good solid defensive fighter;

Martial-based:
Seek tutelage under Trigger; your fight with the Clanners taught you the need of improved blocking from these powerful blows. Seek out Trigger and see if he can teach you more ways to protect yourself.
Justification:
The 'Slip-Not Palm' served us well in this opening fight, can't hurt what they can't hit. It might be nice to see if Master Trigger has a follow-up move that complements the Palm.
Maybe teaching something like a style to 'block with authority' for when we redirect a blow we can also strike to injure the now deflected arm/leg.
If you can bruise an arm or leg on an attack it will make most attackers hesitant to throw the next blow. If a blow becomes hesitant or weak they become easier to defend against.
IE. "If you don't want it hurt; don't stick it out at me".

-------------------------------------------

Mental-based:
Teach yourself Pure Wudang Hung-Ga; the books are there and you have the time. While not as guided as under a tutor, you are able to learn the basics at the least.

Justification:
Horse Stance is a good solid defensive stance that provides high mobility and readily flows to other stances. Single Hard Fist and Double Hard Fist teach strong solid punches that are unlikely to result in user injuries to the hand and are strong foundationally to develop later techniques such as tiger, tiger/crane, etc.

------------------------------------------------------

Qi-based:
Clanner Strength; The Clanners were incredibly strong. They had no business being able to punch with such strength. Look around and see why some skinny kid can throw such hands.
Justification:
If Qi exists and can cause skinny kids to hit like a Mac truck; we need to add it to our arsenal just to retain a shot at defending ourselves. The dragon's aren't likely to forget our interference and even less likely to forgive.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Arcs:
Look up the origin of the Clanners; you've properly pissed off the Dragon Clan. Luckily they have no idea who you are beyond a bare connection to the BCs. Sometimes knowledge if half the battle, so you should find out who these people are.
Justification:
We are already on the Dragon's radar. A fight -is- coming, being knowledgeable about ones opponents is always advantageous. The Guff and Freckles are more of a known element and although of concern these new guys just feel the more dangerous at the moment.

Edit: to cleanup my brainfart (used wrong style name).

@Dadarian is the pick four limited to 1 per category or four overall from ANY category?

Because if we can have multiples from Martial category, I could justify dropping the Hung-Ga in favor of :

"Seek tutelage under Rose; Rose is a chessboxer, and you've seen it in action to terrible effect. Broken bones galore is what you can expect of your enemies. Perhaps you could use her number to secure some proper training in the art."

Justification: Chess boxing teaches balancing animal aggression (naturally occurs when adrenaline pumps, we tend to resort to lizard brain and muscle memory) with strategic thought. Chess boxers tend to manage the self possession of rational thought better, as they train to retain higher thought when the adrenal rush hits. Doing things like working opponents positioning to hinder their enemies and aiding the boxer, working the half-step and controlling when an opponent -can- engage effectively. This fits nicely with the defensive style I want to promote.
