The year is 1990, and world is very much like ours. Men, women, and children eat, sleep, work, and laugh in their homes. The United States, one of the most powerful nations ever to exist, has vast sprawling metropolises. From New York City to Los Angeles, the flag of the Republic flies proudly. However, beneath this high flying belief, this idealistic view of their nation, lies a plethora of problems. Homelessness is rife, teenagers and young men wander the streets in gangs, and inner city corruption continues to fester no matter the vote of the city's constituents.

These gangs, based often around the local dojos and arcades that seem to be the core to the city's youth culture, practice their craft daily. When they're not in school (if they are even in school) they practice their mystic arts under the strict eye of their masters. These masters, often little more than the gang leaders they were, took their way with no appreciation of subtlety or Qi. For as long as anyone could remember, it was rare to see a true Master, who wielded their Qi with true inner strength to bring about wondrous abilities.

You are a young man, raised on these streets. You graduated school, but found yourself with few job prospects, thus were stuck in your old apartment above your old dojo, relying on your old (and best) friend to provide you odd jobs and gang-work to keep your rent. However rumour is spreading throughout the dojos of the city. Something that threatens to change up the stagnant realities of the gangs. Apparently, a Master, a real Master, has arrived to the city from the East, bringing with him untold wisdom and power. The lesser masters will soon rally their forces, seeking to monopolise the wealth of the Master for themselves. Whispers have it that soon ten thousand fists will be heard throughout the concrete jungle, bringing with it great calamity.

You are [NAME], a young man of twenty two. You were born and raised on the streets of [CITY], as your parents were busier with your younger brothers and multiple jobs. It was much to their (and your secret) relief that you were lucky enough to get into the local community college with a [SCHOLARSHIP], graduating at the middle of your class. Since graduating, you've lived alone above your old dojo, where you have learned the [STYLE] under Master Trigger. Nowadays you spend more time with your old friend Weigh, who you swear spends on food what you spend on rent. Thanks to him, you manage to get part-time work with the [GANG], although Master Trigger disapproves. Master Trigger is an old soul, at the ripe age of 35, who spends most of his time valiantly attempting to stem the time youth boredom with hardwork and training. Having spent most of the day on your favourite stoop in the city, you fall asleep to strange dreams.

NAME:

[ ] Write In

CITY:

[ ] Clinton; On the banks of Lake Erie, this city of 1.4 million was once upon a time the butchery of North America. At a crossroads of both the Midwest and New England regions, Clinton was perfectly located to move beef from farm to the hungry peoples of the East. However as America expanded west, it turned to trains, booze, steel, and finally cars. However repeated downturns has left the city a rotting shell of what it was, with corrupted unions working with police and the politicians to pocket as much of the budget as possible.

[ ] Newport; On the shore of the Atlantic, this city of 1.0 million was once the jewel of New Jersey. It was once said that almost every ship made in America had a piece of Newport in it. However those days are long past, not that the Longshoremen would accept that. The Longshoremen are a bloated organisation, built by generations of patronage, with many with the police and the mayoral office paying (figurative or literal) dues to the organisation.

[ ] Hancock; Located in New England and right on the base of 'The Old Man', Hancock once was a major producer of coal. These days died with the coal vein, and only the movement of iron steadily through the town saved it from becoming a ghost. However iron smelters have left their mark upon the land, and the once fertile Jay Lake is now coated in a thick layer of tar. Thankfully, these smelters have not left like many other locales, and this city can maintain it's 850,000 without too much ado. However should these smelters close, it is unknown how long the city could last on inertia alone.

SCHOLARSHIP:

[ ] Athletic; Bonus to Strength and Dexterity. Bonus vote on the sport ([ ] Write In).
[ ] Science; Bonus to Intelligence and Lore.
[ ] Interior Design; Bonus to Qi.

STYLE:

[ ] Pure Wudang; From the Wudang Mountains of far off China. Tied for most common style of fighting with Shaolin, which are Wudang's fierce rivals. Focuses on control of the waist and upper body to control the combat through powerful punches and kicks. Begins the Quest with the Wudang Long Fist and the Soaring Dragon Palm fighting skills.

[ ] Pure Shaolin; Originally from the Shaolin Monastery in Henan, China. Tied with Wudang for the most common fighting style within the city. Fierce enemies of the Wudang dojos. Opposite of the Pure Wudang school, the Pure Shaolin focuses on the legs, fluidity, and adaptiveness to weave through combat to deliver powerful kicks and punches. Begins the Quest with the Shaolin Long Fist and the Subduing Tiger Palm fighting skills.

[ ] Hung Ga; A southern offshoot of Shaolin popularised by the Chinese folk-hero Wong Fei Hung. Although there is a distinct development of one's Qi in the later stages of training, in the city reality has it that the lesser masters skip the Qi training as a whole, leaving unbalanced but powerful fighters. This results in a rigid but durable fighter who is unyielding and uncompromising. Begins the Quest with Single Hard Fist and Tiger Hard Fist fighting skills.

[ ] Trigger School; A domestic school developed by your long time master, Master Trigger, it is one example of the countless tiny, home-brewed schools within the city. Although without the long history of martial and Qi development of the Chinese schools, Trigger's school takes into account the vertical realities of living in the USA. The Trigger work focuses on the foot work and strong knees of the individual in order to provide sure footing while fighting. Begins the Quest with the Trigger Flying Knee and the Slip-Not Palm.

GANG:

[ ] The Dayers; The lads off Daye Street just around the corner from your dojo. You've known these guys all your life, having played hookie, gone to school, and done all sorts of trouble with them. Although their master, Master Fuzzy, is none too smart, he means well. Don't let his spectacularly ugly mustache-thing on his lip surprise you though, his left cross has made Master Trigger very, very proud of his former student.

[ ] The Swannies; A group of guys from behind the Black Swan pub. While not exactly your rivals, you're not exactly friendly with them, with relations at a cool level of respect. Their leader, Master Freckles, also went to school with you (college too!), proving him smarter than the average lesser master. However the guy is a known clutz, and once delivered a long punch into a stack of garbage rather than his opponent during a duel. The Swannies are followers of Swanny Shaolin (a subsect of True Shaolin).

[ ] The BCs (bee-cees); Named after where their dojo is located (corner of Broad and Church), the BCs are a stranger grouping, having been more in connection with their Qi. In pursuit of that goal, the gang have for the past year forsaken much of the fighting for clout and territory to focus on themselves. Their leader, Master Spoon, seems to have pacifist inclinations, however the BCs have been seen more often outside their block, hinting that their insular times have ended. This gang follows Spoon's own take on True Wudang.

[ ] The Guff; Located off Guff Park, this gang are not the smartest or most in touch with their Qi. Master Buff, a devout proponent of a mistaken idea of Hung Ga (locally known as Hung Guff), has led the Guffs to be incredibly physically adept as a trade off to their intellectual and spiritual deficiencies. Buff's Guffs are one of the scariest gangs within the City, with most gangs simply finding it easier to run from them than explain why they've come home with a broken arm. Unsurprisingly, Hung Guff has been a growing school within the city, with smaller gangs being forcibly subsumed at an increasing rate.

First, shout out to @Exmorri for the inspiration to do a wuxia quest, I have a long love of the genre.

That said, this Quest will tight, focused, and heavily influenced by certain musical elements of my life. While not a traditional wuxia, I hope people enjoy it as much as I do writing this.

Because this is going to be a character game and a fighting game, there will be two (2) groups of stats. The first are character stats, dedicated to the individual and used in conjunction with rolls to measure the ability of the main character to do something. The second are fighting skill experience, used to measure your talent in showing off and fighting your enemies.

Character Stats

The character stats are defined as follows:

-- Strength: Measures the character's physical strength and power.
-- Dexterity: Measures the character's physical subtlety and deftness.
-- Intelligence: Measures the character's smarts and logic. (Not a measure of his common sense though).
-- Lore: Measures the character's knowledge and memory.
-- Qi: Measures the character's willpower and spirit.

Fighting Skill Experience

The fighting skill experience is defined as follows:

1) Untrained (You do not know anything about this technique, -1 to roll)
2) Student (You know what it is, but nothing else, 0 to roll)
3) Learned (You know everything you can from a teacher without actually doing it, +1 to roll)
4) Talented (You know quite a bit about this technique, +2 to roll)
5) Adept (You powers are great, but only to those students you once were yourself, +3 to roll)
6) Lesser Master (You have attained the equivalent of the lesser masters, and able to teach this technique in your right, +4 to roll)
7) Domestic Legend (You have broken the long dearth in master qualities within the city, but is this it? +5 to roll)
8) Master (You've tapped into your true Qi, finding in yourself a greater strength. You are far past the limitations of your former peers, +6 to roll)
9) Legend (You're a paragon of martial arts ability, renown [maybe not in your time] for your skill, +7 to roll)

What about the Qi part where its mentioned everywhere in the OP? And how unproper training of it can cause a powerful if unbalanced warrior? :eyebrow:
Qi is martial arts-okay, but not neccesarily cultivation. Many wuxia use qi or internal energy as a concept, but don't have the overt supernatural focus and the other attendant memes that come with cultivation.

I feel we should definitely follow the Trigger school. Master Trigger is after all the guy who taught us discipline and how to fight, not to follow his style, master and refine it to a point where we surpass its creator and incorporate true Qi into it would be a disservice to our techer.

CITY
[] Clinton; On the banks of Lake Erie, this city of 1.4 million was once upon a time the butchery of North America. At a crossroads of both the Midwest and New England regions, Clinton was perfectly located to move beef from farm to the hungry peoples of the East. However as America expanded west, it turned to trains, booze, steel, and finally cars. SCHOLARSHIP
[] Athletic; Bonus to Strength and Dexterity. Bonus vote on the sport ([ ] Write In).
-[] Gymnastics

I feel like "martial arts" for a scholarship is too on-the-nose. Gymnastics works well with the Trigger Style, anyway.

STYLE
[ ] Trigger School; A domestic school developed by your long time master, Master Trigger, it is one example of the countless tiny, home-brewed schools within the city. Although without the long history of martial and Qi development of the Chinese schools, Trigger's school takes into account the vertical realities of living in the USA. The Trigger work focuses on the foot work and strong knees of the individual in order to provide sure footing while fighting. Begins the Quest with the Trigger Flying Knee and the Slip-Not Palm.

Sure, let's have our own unique martial art to start. We should totally learn one or two others as time goes on, though, and combine it to make something new of our own.

GANG
[ ] The BCs (bee-cees); Named after where their dojo is located (corner of Broad and Church), the BCs are a stranger grouping, having been more in connection with their Qi. In pursuit of that goal, the gang have for the past year forsaken much of the fighting for clout and territory to focus on themselves. Their leader, Master Spoon, seems to have pacifist inclinations, however the BCs have been seen more often outside their block, hinting that their insular times have ended. This gang follows Spoon's own take on True Wudang.

Case in point, the internal focus of Wudang martial arts would be a good counterbalance to the clearly external influences of Trigger Style.

Seriously though, I have been waiting so long for someone to do a Wuxia quest.

It's only fair to give prior warning for when voting will close, so I'll close it when I wake up tomorrow at 08:00 PST / 11:00 EST.
