Anyways I dont see any reason to diverge from history at this point. Finrod is a good person, a valiant friend and ally, who always saw the Best in Men. He is the mentor who would teach us and protect us and help us with everything he has almost unconditionally.

Having him at our back also makes it easier to seek teachings from the Feanorians and the Dwarves.

@Telamon
There are a number of things indicating the Wise and the Hunters and other sub-factions like the Rangers having a certain number of actions. Do we know that number? Do they do things on their own with them?

And does this:
[] The Wise have stories to tell of times much like this, and troubles much like these. (Chance to gain a +20 to all rolls for a turn)
apply to this current turn?

I'm in favor of all sending scouting parties both north and west, as well as organizing a significant scouting of the mountains for our lost folk.

Also somewhat in favor of trying to get the Seers and Spears to actually get along.

Maybe a feast? Our morale is pretty in the tank right now.

Men may know only one ally among the Powers of Beleriand. The various Houses of Men swore themselves to different lords and Kings of the Noldor. That is not to say you cannot have many friends (not allies), but Beleriand is full of very old people with very old reasons to hate each other — it will difficult.

Mmm, between Beor's diplomatic skill and the possibility of getting a +20 to all rolls this turn, it could be well worth the effort.

I'm ambivalent on this, with the number of actions we have, the uncertain chance of success, and the coming of Finrod guaranteed. It's interesting certainly, but not necessarily the most efficient use of stuff in this perilous time.

And with the latest information from Telamon, might not be worth it to split Beor's attention.

Yeah thats fair.

I choose Finrod.

Rangers are a class. An action that gives Rangers three extra actions would give your son Baran, for example, five actions next turn.

The Wise and the Hunters are separate factions, and you can do things which 'buff' actions related to them with bonuses. If you make them happy, working with them becomes easier.

And yes, that bonus would apply to this turn.

But then how get Luthien waifu in marriage alliance?
Thats written in Fate, the Lay of Leithian will happen one way or another, but its not up to us.

Also trying to convince Thingol to let a Man marry his precious daughteru. Good luck.

Besides, if someone told me that I could have either the love of Luthien or the friendship of Finrod but not both I wold go for the later every time.

Marriage?

Beor and his sons can probably hear how hard Thingol is cackling at that in a cave underground half a continent away.
The only Man who might have gotten an approved marriage from Thingol would be Turin who Thingol sincerely loved like a son.

And well;
1. This is after Beren convinced Thingol to be less racist.
2. It's fucking Turin
3. Luthien is probably going to be dead by the time Turin comes into play.
4. It's fucking Turin

@Telamon Just to be sure we are aware of the fact that the other two Houses of Men that will arrive to this land not long after us right? I'm not exactly an expert on the lore but I seem to remember that it was Beör who informed Finrod about their future arrival.

You know there are others making their way westward, and from the last you saw of them before the mountains, you know they will be here within the next few years, if they survived the crossing.

Ok.

[] Try to make them get along, for the good of the folk (DC 100, ??? if you fail, gain both the positive modifiers above if you succeed)
This is gonna be a risk, but it's probably one worth taking, with the gains and Beor's Diplomacy, along with

[] The Wise have stories to tell of times much like this, and troubles much like these. (Chance to gain a +20 to all rolls for a turn)
providing an extra +20 to Beor's +40 for the first option, assuming we succeed. And Belen, being the highest of Lore, is best suited for that. It will also affect everything else, which can only help.

Honestly? I think Beor should use both of his APs on making the Hunters and Wise get along, because it's really damn important it succeed, and a DC of 40 isn't the best in these times, and that's only if Belen succeeds in getting the +20.

That leaves Baran's two actions and one action to be assigned.

One choice is obvious:
[] You organize a scouting party to search for the lost Men in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. (Hunters will gather one less month of food this turn)
We cannot afford any further loss in morale, and there is a chance we could get some extra men.

The other is only barely less obvious:
[] The hunters say that in their rangings high in the mountains, they bespied Oroch from afar. Though they were many leagues away, some among them think it might be wise for a party of them to go up into the mountains and erase your tracks, that the foul beasts might not find you.
Even if we put Baran on it, even if it's entirely defensive, we just cannot, cannot afford a fight at the moment. Not with our situation, with morale as it is.

So that leaves on extra action which I'm a little torn on.
I'm tentatively thinking that if we're set on waiting for Finrod, and I really think we should be because just can't afford to experiment at this stage, there may be no need for scouting.

So I'm thinking either give it to Belen to learn magic, which may be problematic if it means he's locked into that questline for some time, or attempt to get a Ranger/Warrior leader, something Baran seems quite capable of doing and to add to our combat/scouting/ranging ability. Between Baran's REALLY high ability in his area of aptitude and a possible +20 from Belen, it seems a good chance.

That leaves General Leadership.

Morale is in the tank, so:
[] You send the Wise among them to heal their wounds and mend the physical scars of their terrible journey through the passes.

[] You throw a celebration to feast emerging from the mountain passes alive and mostly whole. (Will take up two months worth of food)(Morale greatly improved)
[] You give extra rations to the women and children, that they might quicker recover from the harshness of the mountains (Requires an extra month of food)

To get ourselves cleaned up. And as a subset, because the women and children are the most numerous of our people.

Even with the extra required food, we'd still have about four months, three if we want to be safe, to guarantee getting through this turn.

And we shall have to work hard to unify the disparate houses of the Edain under our leadership. For the good of all Men of course.

As an alternative to Best Elf Finrod, might I suggest the Dwarves of Nogrod? Now the Firebeards might be prickly and aggressive towards their enemies but it is here in cooperation with Nargothrond that the smiths exemplified by Telchar and Gamil Zirak began their grand tradition. It is here that the great exchange of trade between the elven-realms and the mountain halls crosses and the place were one can find anything from solitary Avari to Stonefoots and Ironfists of the East to Sindar with tidings of Thingol and Melian. Plus in the vales around the Hollowbold the House of Beor would have the chance to meaningfully contribute to the Dwarf-lords not just through the hopeless force of arms against Morgoth but through an unfilled economic niche. Consider in a different age, Khazad-Dûm and the Men of the Anduin who provided them with fat harvests of grain and their bounty of foodstuffs and other resources of the field and the orchard and the woodland for their work in stone and metal. Dwarves can spend their whole lives so enraptured by elements of Arda's beauty like the Mirrormere or the Glittering Caves that a significant portion of them never get around to eve things like marriage for their entire, centuries long, life. Properly managing and exploiting the lakes and mountain glens of the Blue Mountains are something they don't really have the time or the labor to do, and by providing a way for them to spend more time obsessing over galvorn and mithril is a surer way to their eternal friendship then anything bar getting Aulë to pop on over and teach them everything he taught the Noldor. In this way the realms of Beor may be protected by terraces and ramparts built by genuinely grateful Khazâd and by their sometimes terrifyingly fearless shield-walls for then the temporary good will of the oathbound Fëanorians.

Something to consider is that in canon the Sons of Feanor had some lackluster human allies (Ulfang and his sons). If the eastern realms of Beleriand could be reinforced by a loyal tribe of Edain, the Siege of Angband could be made much stronger. From such a position we would also be able to take actions directed towards Eriador. There we could seek to mobilize more loyal Men to join us.

Regardless, if we decide to stay on the canon path (Finrod). I would advise against settling in Dorthonion. That is simply the worst piece of real estate available.

But then how get Luthien waifu in marriage alliance?
Finrod is actually the best option for this. Finrod and Doriath got along fine; picking him won't lock us out of later making alliances with doriath, but the feanorians almost certainly will, as cool as maedhros is, and the dwarves won't help on that score but also won't really interfere there.

[] Plan The Advent of Men
[] You send a party to closely investigate the northernmost river of this land, which your outriders say rushes like a roaring river. A strange road of stone runs along it's side, rising up into the mountains. (Hunters will gather one less month of food this turn)(Chance to begin Questline: The Sons of the Stone)
--[] Leader Beor
[] You send a party westwards, towards a mighty river which flows both north and south. (Hunters will gather one less month of food this turn) (Chance to begin Questline: The Spirits of Fire)
--[]Leader Beor
[] You organize a great force of roughly twenty men to ride about the boundaries of this new land and closely search it for any sign of the Shadow. A skilled tracker is necessary to do so. (Hunters will gather two less months of food this turn)(Great chance to begin Questline: The Forest Dwellers)(Small chance to begin Questline: The Shadow Follows)
--[] Leader Beor
[] You organize a sizable force to search for the lost Men in the near reaches of the Blue Mountains. (Hunters will gather two months less of food this turn, chance of losing Men)
--[] Leader Baran
[] Support the Spears, at least for a time. Food is well needed, and by giving the hunters public support in the near future, you can better gather resources this year. (Increased food gain for two turns, Bonus to all Hunter votes, Rangers get one extra action next turn)
--[] Leader Baran
[] The Wise have stories to tell of times much like this, and troubles much like these. (Chance to gain a +20 to all rolls for a turn)
--[] Leader Belen
[] You give extra rations to the women and children, that they might quicker recover from the harshness of the mountains (Requires an extra month of food)
[] You personally speak to them, attempting to allay their fears and calm them.
[] You give extra rations to the elderly and the Wise, that the memory of where we have been does not fade before it can be passed on. (Requires an extra month of food)(Increase the influence of the Wise)

I think this gets us the best stuff:
Beor is our main tool early on, especially for establishing our diplomatic relations. As such, we should pur him on those tasks while we have him; we'll be able to get at least decent relations with all out neighbiors
Baran is our best bet for increasing our available population; the second one's increased chance to rescue them is worth the few potential losses, especially since baran is relevant skills. He's also the onyl leader really available for the support vote, so he'll have to handle that unless we want a global malus.
Belen will be very critical once we meet the noldor, but in the meantime he's best suited to buffing our first impressions with a nice +20 roll.
Humans had a huge mortality problem, which lead to losses of lore that they would seek after for ages hence; feeding the elderly and wise, which also server to help balance out the support of the spears. Similarly, there aren't so many of use that we can afford to let the children die off. Beor's diplomacy action is honestly mostly filler, so I could be persuaded to change it, but I think it's the best bang for our buck; these aren't worth using up an AP to get more of.

My main concern is food. If the hunter bonuses don't pan out, this will use up our surplus; I could consider removing one of the food decreasing votes, like hunting in the blue mountains, if the additional hunting strength doesn't matter.

I'd advise becoming too invested with any one piece of land at all. Right now we are more or less playing the part of a Migration Period germanic tribe and that isn't really a bad thing to be. We should still settle down, that really isn't optional, but we should always keep in mind that maybe next year or next decade we will need to go settle somewhere else instead. Preferably somewhere that isn't having a sudden onset of giant spiders that year or something.

Our ability to embrace an ephemeral, transitory and ever renewing nature is what we have going for us. We may as well make use of that.
