The Rose's Ocean (RWBY/One Piece)

I'm hoping that this story lasts longer than most, preferably all, of your previous stories thus far- as this plot bunny seems particularly good.

Yeah, off the SB record, it was originally my intention to give the Strawhats Aura. Feels like it's too much of "oh, Ruby is super special awesome" to give her Aura and Haki and a Logia. I just backed off to reexamine my prospects once people started debating the topic.
People are dicks. Have fun with what you do man

I've decided to take a slower pace in general on this and RCHE because I recognize my problem is that I tend to burn the candle at both ends working on a story, eventually subconsciously associate it with being unhappy because it becomes a job more than hobby and quit.

With how batshit insanely powerful One Piece characters get they'll still have plenty of trouble even having Aura. Yeah they'll roll over some early fights no problem, but that might cause more attention than in canon.

Aura is also something that spreads. What if Ruby unlocks Vivi's Aura, then Vivi unlocks the Aura of a few royal soldiers, who then unlock the Aura of a couple marines that help, and so on.

Yeah, that's kinda of my problem with Ruby (I've figured out a way around it), how to avoid her just destroying the entirety of Baroque Works (except Croc, who naturally counters her) and turn the Strawhats into her personal cheerleading squad. Because even without a Logia, Volume 8/9 Ruby could beat the crap out of most if not all of Baroque Works except maybe Mr.1 and definitely Croc on her own.

Since Ruby noticed that her Semblance apparently evolved after eating the Woods-Woods Fruit, would her Aura be evolved too as well
Quick note, Ruby's Aura didn't actually change, it's still Petal Burst (though she can double it up with her Logia powers to cross long distances), she just didn't have any way to explain "holy shit, eating a weird fruit turned me into a plant person!" without comparing to as if her Semblance had changed.

If those couple of Marines who happened to be Smoker and Tashigi, then those two get to experience the power of Aura and Semblance after their souls were unlocked.

What about Nico Robin or Miss All Sunday? Her Flower-Flower Fruit allows her to sprout her arms to incapacitate her opponents before they even realize it and she was very good at it when she was an antagonist. Which means that Ruby would be in trouble when Robin's arms appear on her body upon confronting her.

"Power, speed.... They're nothing to me." - Robin before she easily took down Pell the Falcon.

I see, thanks for clarification. Ruby is officially an Aura-protected nature Logia with the power of Petal Burst which would make her a terrifying foe in her own right for anyone who face her in battle.

So, anouncment time. I'm going to stay the course of my original intention and allow the crew to gain Aura. It feels like I'm making Ruby this "super special awesome" Mary Sue to me if she has Aura, Haki and a Logia when everyone else is running around with at best Haki and (what they think is a) Paramecia.

Now, does that mean every Semblance is gonna be useful in combat? No. And as previously said, some characters may decide that going through the process of learning their Semblance is too much effort. But they will have Aura sooner or later.

Awesome, I look forward to see Ruby unlock the Aura of Luffy and his fellow Straw Hats, and don't worry, it's your story. You make the rules and it's your right to put your foot down to enforce them.

I acknowledge I'm being schizophrenic as all hell about whether or not I use Japanese or English names. And no, I don't care and no, I won't apologize. I just prefer the X X no Mi format and the name Yoru over Night. But Luffy's moves will still be primarily the English version like Gumu Gumu Pistol

It's cool either way. I look forward to how Luffy, Nami, and Usopp react to Ruby using her Crescent Rose when she spars with Zoro, and Ruby wondering how can Zoro talk and breathe despite having a sword handle on his mouth when he uses Three Sword Style.

Ruby actually won't be allowed to use Crescent Rose (or Floating Array, can't forget she's got one of the blades from that) at first. It defeats the goal of learning to use her Devil Fruit if she can just fight normally.

Say what you will about Luffy's intelligence, but he knows how to train Devil Fruits.

Fair enough. No pain, no gain. I think once Robin joins the Straw Hats, she can teach Ruby the finesse of using a Devil Fruit power.

Speaking of which, is this Volume 3 Ruby Rose who had Floating Array sword of Penny to fight off a Grimm Gryphon, or Volume 9 Ruby Rose who had the same weapon after falling down from Ambrosius' network of golden bridges to Vacuo, as the main character of this crossover story?

Volume 9. Which is why the tail end of Romance Dawn into Alabasta is gonna focus on her mental health.

I see, thanks. At least Ruby meets the Straw Hats as her new friends who can help her get back on her feet and inspires her to have a dream as Luffy and his friends have respective dreams they strive for when they make their declaration together after leaving Loguetown for the Grand Line.

Chapter 1
So for those curious on why Ruby didn't just repeat her trick from last chapter and petal burst on to the Going Merry, I was gonna do that, but felt it was really, really cheap to skip the Baratie arc. That wouldn't inspire confidence I wasn't just gonna completely skip other arcs.

---

The first time Ruby had been hit by Zoro's sword, a beautifully made katana named Wado Ichimonji, her Aura had absorbed the blow, leaving the lightest nick on her neck. The second time, he had adjusted his strength enough to cut through both, even if he had slowed considerably during it. Which wasn't something you wanted to notice while you were being decapitated, but it had let her feel the vines rise up in the wake of the slash to repair the damage done. That had left her comfortable enough to just focus on how to use her "Devil Fruit" powers to the full extent.

It, uh, led to a lot of dismemberment and decapitations at first, Ruby trusting the vines to pull her together or, in extreme cases, the limb to dissolve into rose petals and reform on her body like she had been untouched. But now, three days into their brutal training session where Luffy had been insistent she not be allowed to use Crescent Rose?

Ruby caught the blade on her neck, ironhard bark having replaced her skin. Zoro shifted his grip on Wado Ichimonji, the blade going even with her neck and skidding up it to strike her chin and keep going. Ruby immediately turned her face to wood, the feeling of his sword turning to a dull scrape as it slid up her face.

Ruby dissolved into rose petals, flowing around Zoro and reforming behind him, left hand transformed into a wooden version of Ember Celica and drove the punch into his back, seeds flying out like a shotgun blast and throwing him across the floor of the Going Merry.

"Good hit," Zoro praised, standing up and rubbing his back with a wince, "I gotta ask, what's with the weird form you made it take?"

Ruby glanced down at the fake Ember Celica, "it's based off my sister's weapon, Ember Celica."

"Shishishi!" Luffy laughed, "You got a sister, Ruby?"

"Half," Ruby said, "Yang Xiao Long. She practically raised me after Mom died."

"How'd she die? Ow! Nami!" Usopp cradled his head as Nami's open palm slapped into it.

"Don't you think that's a bit rude, Usopp?" Nami said, teeth somehow having become sharp and her head seeming to have grown in size.

"What!?" Usopp said, "We're on the same crew but we know basically nothing about each other. We can at least start with our relationship with our moms!"

"She was, uh, a Huntress, a job back home, hunting monsters for a living, she went on a job and… Well, we never found the body," Ruby said, rubbing the back of her neck uncomfortably, "I was training to follow in her footsteps before… Everything."

"You were training for the job that killed your mom?" Usopp deadpanned, loading a cannonball into the cannon.

"It's all I ever wanted to be," Ruby said with a shrug.

"Weird," he said, "anyways, my mom died when I was a kid, got sick and just… Yeah."

"Never knew mine," Luffy said with a shrug, "Grew up with a bandit named Dadan through."

"Why doesn't it surprise me you were literally raised by bandits?" Zoro asked, taking a second to plug his ears as the cannon went off, alongside the rest of the crew, "Anyways, I'm not talking about mine."

"Same," Nami said.

"Come on," Usopp whined.

"They don't have to if they don't want to," Ruby said, popping a strawberry in her mouth.

"HEY!" a voice called from over the edge of the Going Merry, "WHAT DO YOU BASTARDS THINK YOU'RE DOING, TRYING TO KILL MY BRO!?"

What.

"I recognize that voice," Zoro said, speedwalking over to the edge of the ship, "Johnny, is that you?"

"I- Big Bro Zoro?" The voice said as Ruby shifted herself to the edge of the Going Merry. Standing there was a man with short black hair and a tattoo on his face wearing a blue hoody, "What are you doing with some pirates?"

"I had a change in jobs, where's Yosaku?"

Johnny watched the girl wearing a red cloak gently put Yosaku on the deck of the ship, stepping back to let the redhead look over him. He swallowed, "He's, he's dying, isn't he? He was complaining about feeling tired, then he fell over, and then his gums started bleeding and teeth falling out! I don't know what's wrong with him, I just-"

"Ruby," the redhead said, "Can you make something citrusy? Limes, lemons, oranges, anything like that?"

"Yeah," the other girl said, flipping her hand down so it was facing the deck and causing green, hard skin covered fruit to drop from the palm of her hand, "Is it scurvy?"

"Scurvy?" The boy wearing a Straw hat asked.

"It's a disease," Ruby said, "caused by a lack of vitamin C. We learned about it at Beacon, sounds like what he has."

"Beacon?" The redhead said, pulling out a knife and splitting the first fruit in two, squeezing the fruit's juice into Yosaku's mouth.

"Combat school I went to when I was younger," Ruby said, leaning against the cabin wall and growing a strawberry out of her hand and popping it into her mouth, "there was a class on wilderness survival."

"How are you doing that?" Johnny asked now that his bro's life apparently wasn't in immediate danger.

"I ate a Devil Fruit," she explained, her entire body, even clothes, turning to bark, "it made me into a plant person."

"Devil fru- those are real!?" Johnny asked, "I heard of them, bit I thought they were a myth, like sea kings!"

Everyone on the ship, except Ruby, shared looks before the redhead said, "You think… You think sea kings are a myth?"

"What's a sea king?" Ruby asked.

"They're giant sea monsters," Starw Hat said, "and, shishishi! They're definitely real. I punched one when I first headed out!"

"You punched-!" the redhead started, before sighing, "no, that actually makes sense for you."

"Sea monsters," Ruby muttered, "of course there would be sea monsters. Remnant had sea monsters, why wouldn't this place? Nami, how long does it take for someone to recover from scurvy?"

"He should feel better in a couple of-" Yosaku jerked upright, gasping for air and patting his chest.

"Holy crap, I'm better!"

"Why do I get the feeling it wasn't supposed to be that fast?" Big Sis Ruby asked.

"It's supposed to take days to start to feel better!" Big Sis Nami gritted out as Johnny and Yosaku began to dance around.

"Anyways," Big Bro Zoro said, "you said you went to a school for combat, Ruby?"

"A couple," Big Sis Ruby nodded, "I started training with an old harvest scythe when I was, like, nine? Then when I was Thirteen I was let into Signal Academy, which was on my home island and where my Dad and Uncle worked, that's where I made Crescent Rose. Then it was decided when I was fifteen that I was good enough to skip two grades to go to Beacon and then, uh," Ruby rubbed the back of her neck, "I didn't even finish a year there before some terrorist went and destroyed it? Anyways, everything after that has been on the job training."

"And how old are you now?"

"Like, a couple weeks from eight… Teen…"

"You were on that island long enough that you missed your birthday?" Big Sis Nami asked.

"I haven't celebrated in the last couple of years anyways, too much going on," Big Sis Ruby shrugged, "Guess I'm eighteen now."

"We should throw a party!" Straw Hat said.

"We don't have enough supplies for that, Luffy," Big Sis Ruby said, "and we don't have a cook. I'll just eat some strawberries, it's good enough."

"But you're always eating strawberries!" Big Bro Luffy whined.

"And you wouldn't eat meat if you could just create it?" Big Sis Ruby said.

"Still, we should probably try to pick up a chef at the next port," Big Bro Zoro said.

"I know!" Johnny said, "there's a bigshot restaurant nearby, you guys can get something for Big Sis Ruby's birthday and find a cook! There's gotta be someone tired of working in a stuffy restaurant!"

"Big Sis-?"

"You helped us," Johnny nodded, "so you're all our Big Sisters and Brothers!"

Zoro aimed a thrust at Ruby's neck, just above the collar bone. The wood formed on her neck, catching Wado Ichimonji. He wasn't the best at One Sword Style, which made it perfect for training Ruby, "So, what's with the green and black sword?"

Ruby's eyes flickered to it and the red box she had come with, and Zoro took the opportunity to try and gouge out her eyes, only for them to turn to wood.

"It's called Floating Array," Ruby said, "Why?"

"Just curious, never seen anything like it," Zoro said, stepping to the side as Ruby changed her hand into a longsword and tried to cut him in two, "You mind if I take a look at it?"

"Do you mind if I take a look at Wado Ichimonji?" Ruby retorted, apparently knowing the answer already.

"Fair enough," Zoro said. Did that mean it had also belonged to someone close to Ruby? A rival of some sort, maybe? "You've got a lot better at this really quickly, gotta admit."

"I like fighting," Ruby said with a shrug, thrusting an open palm at Zoro's chest and driving a spike of wood at his chest. Zoro turned to the side, feeling it brush against his chest as he went.

"Got a dream to be a good one?" Zoro asked in curiosity.

"Not really," Ruby looked troubled, "I- I wanted to be a Huntress growing up, it's all I ever wanted to be, but… Actually being one hasn't been all that great. I guess I kinda expected it to be something like being a fairy tale type thing, you know? What about you?"

"I'm gonna be the world's greatest swordsman," Zoro said, absolutely certain, "I made that promise long ago and I'll keep it no matter what."

"Make me, with my lack of dream, look insignificant, why don't you, Zoro?"

"You can have a small dream until you find something big," Zoro said.

"Hmm," Ruby hummed. Before they could finish the spar, several cannon blasts went off. Whipping around, they watched a series of cannon balls go off as they approached the floating restaurant.

"Do people normally fire cannonballs at random ships?" Ruby asked.

"The marines do, sometimes," Zoro said, gripping Wado Ichimonji and preparing for the worst only for Luffy to leap into the air, inflating as he did, and catching the balls on his stomach before launching them back at the ship… Only to hit the restaurant, "Dumbass.".

The entire crew had been stuck on the restaurant ship for a week while Luffy paid off the damage he had caused to the ship. Unlike the other three, who were content to sit around, eating and chatting, Ruby at least tried to help. Bussing tables, cleaning dishes and generating a never ending supply of produce for the restaurant staff, which honestly, was a good practice for her power so she wasn't gonna complain.

She had also learned the name of her Devil Fruit from the blond haired sous-chef, who had apparently read about it in an encyclopedia of Devil Fruit when he was a kid.

The Mori Mori no Mi, or "Forest Forest Fruit" in a language she understood.

She had also had a rather awkward conversation with him.

"Sanji?" Ruby said, handing a basket full of tomatoes to Patty.

"Yes, Ruby?" Sanji asked, hearts in his eyes, darn near literally. What was with this world?

"Can you, uh, stop flirting with me?" Ruby said awkwardly, "I don't- it's not gonna go anywhere. I don't like boys-"

Well, it was more accurate to say she hadn't liked
anyone like that until she'd gotten to know Penny, but she didn't really know how to describe that.

"-And I ha- had a girlfriend," Ruby finished, voice cracking halfway through.

"Sorry," Sanji had the decency to look sheepish, "it's kinda just something I do now. I'll try to avoid it around you."

Towards the end of the week, where Ruby was half convinced they were gonna be allowed to leave because Luffy was really bad at being a chore boy, the doors burst open to let in a man with graying purple hair, practically crawling into the room, "Food, please, I-I need food!"

"Get him something light," Ruby ordered, noticing Nami slip out of the room, remembering her survival training, "broth of some sort, maybe!"

"Wha- we're a restaurant, not a handout shelter, Ruby!" Patty said.

"And you think anyone's gonna want to come to a restaurant that let a man starve to death on the floor?" Ruby shot back.

"She's right," the proprietor of the Baratie, a peg legged man named Zeff said, putting a bowl of chicken broth down in front of the man, "drink that, carefully now, son. Too quickly and you'll be vomiting it all over the floor.

"Thank you," the man gasped, sitting up and beginning to sip from the bowl. At the same time, Ruby caught a glint in his right hand and moved. Sliding in front of Zeff as the pistol raised, "Now, get me food for my crew."

"Put down that gun," Ruby said, seriously, the lessons Uncle Qrow taught her immediately coming up, "before someone gets hurt."

The man laughed, already sounding fully recovered on half a bowl of broth, "And who will that be, girl- What!?"

Ruby's hand surged down, forming into the replica of Ember Celica and crushing the gun's barrel. A jerk pulled the gun from his hand and she lowered it to the floor gently with vines. With the other hand, she drew Crescent Rose off her back and aimed it staight at the man's head.

"That's enough, Ruby," Zeff said, "Patty, Carne, bring out the pot. As for you, Don Krieg, if you're still here at dawn, we will beat you. Don't underestimate chefs, we're perfectly capable of beating your half starved crew."

"Don Krieg?"

"One of the most powerful pirates in the East Blue," Zoro said, standing from the table and thumb caressing Wado Ichimonji's tsuba, "Though last I heard, he'd taken his fleet and gone to the Grand Line."

Ruby noticed the flinch from Don Krieg at the mention of the sea they were sailing to. What had happened there?

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" Patty asked.

"We can beat them," Zeff said, "but I refuse to let a man starve to death, nobody deserves that."

"Big Bros! Big Sis!" Johnny and Yosaku ran on sopping wet, "N-Nami just ran off with the Going Merry!"

What. Wait.

Floating Array was on the Merry.

Ruby felt her heart begin to rush. Only to calm at her captain's declaration.

"We'll all go after it once we're done here. Usopp, take Jimmy and Yosuke and get going after her. We'll catch up, don't worry."

Damn this is good, I feel like they're already starting to connect, which makes sense it is the straw hat crew. I'll have to go back and reread chapter 1 because I couldn't remember from what season Ruby would have come from until I saw she had Floating Array.

I just realized something: considering the name theme in One Piece, Ruby Rose would be addressed as Rose as her first name and Ruby as her surname from a perspective of a One Piece denizen.

I mean no one calls Whitebeard as Edward but Newgate or Big Mom as Charlotte but Linlin for example.

Not quite. Oda actually did keep this in mind for One Piece while most authors wouldn't. The Katakana for Whitebeard's name is phonetically correct to a Western name. That is, his name in Japanese is

エドワード・二ューゲート

Or, in Romanji "Edowādo Nyūgēto"

They just call him Newgate, it isn't that he's introduced in Japanese as Newgate Edward. So in One Piece, there is a combination of people with Eastern Names (Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Vinsmoke Sanji, ect.) And people with Western Style names (Edward Newgate, Marshall D. Teach, Charlotte Linlin).

And yes, I did look up each of those names to make sure the Romanji lined up. It's one of those things that facinates me.

So yes, "Ruby Rose" is a phonetically correct name in the world of One Piece, they wouldn't necessarily assume Rose is her given name.

I see. Plus considering Ruby Rose possesses the Woods-Woods Fruit, they will see her name very fitting. Especially when she grows plantlife just by walking on the desert lands of Alabasta.

"Sorry," Sanji had the decency to look sheepish, "it's kinda just something I do now. I'll try to avoid it around you."
Would it be cool if this Sanji has his live action counterpart's toning down the excessive flirting? Also considering Ruby can make fruits and vegetables, I can guess Sanji ain't having problem of getting them for cooking.

With the other hand, she drew Crescent Rose off her back and aimed it straight at the man's head.
I wonder if Ruby will learn that no one in One Piece world has Aura and can bleed and die easily if they're not careful. It might shock her if she had easily killed Don Krieg with a headshot there.

Ruby noticed the flinch from Don Krieg at the mention of the sea they were sailing to. What had happened there?
I am excited to see Ruby react to Mihawk and his sword Yoru, and probably learn an important lesson from him regarding Logia vulnerability to Haki when he cuts her with an actual bleeding wound.

The kingdom will be weep tears of joy as random fruit bearing plants start popping up. I wonder how hardy those plants she creates are? stonger than normal for sure, so they will survive that harsh weather of the kingdom.

Considering the plantlife made by Aramaki, who was on his way towards the capital city of Wano, were still there despite most of the country was a polluted wasteland that he walked on before being confronted by Nine Red Scabbards, Yamato and Adult Momo in Dragon form, it means anything made by the Woods-Woods Fruit is indeed stronger than normal plants.

So yeah, Alabasta will have their new oasis and can keep it.

Would it be cool if this Sanji has his live action counterpart's toning down the excessive flirting? Also
I haven't watched the live action yet (I know it's good, just been busy with other stuff... Like rewatching the anime and writing), so I can't say. I just believe with absolute certainty that Sanji would respect a woman being a lesbian (or, as Ruby kinda says but doesn't really know the term for, Demisexual) and drop it.
