When Ruby woke up on a island in the middle of nowhere after falling of a Bridge in the in between, she didn't expect to become a Pirate. But, of course, she really didn't expect anything that happened after that either
Prologue

ThatOnePsycho

Tilting his Vanes and Ennobling His Spires
Ruby chewed on an banana listlessly, leaning on the wooden tree it had come from in boredom, spinning Floating Array's blade as she did. Speaking aloud, "well, at least I won't die, eh, Penny?"

Penny didn't respond, couldn't when she wasn't even here. Chewing on her banana, she stared out over the small island she had beem stuck on for the last month. It didn't look like it had when she started out. When she had, there had been a single half dead tree with a single fruit. When Ruby had finally caved, starving, it had tasted horrible, and then things got… Weird. Like the fruit had forced her Semblance to evolve in ways she had never heard of.

The obvious one was that her skin could turn into thick bark, tightly knit vines or any other plant life she could imagine on top of her ability to dissolve into rose petals, or now, leaves or anything else that came off a plant. And when she had tried to cut her palm with Crescent Rose out of morbid curiosity, the spot had healed instantly in a flurry of lashing vines literally pulling the wound together.

The other was that she could force plants into existence from the palm of her hand. She had quickly figured out how to cause the tree she was eating from to grow in seconds, alongside strawberry bushes and, when the sun was out, she could feel herself gaining energy.

So in short, unless she went insane, had already gone insane honestly, from isolation, she wasn't in any danger of dying anytime soon. Which honestly wasn't any better in her opinion but what could you do?

That was when a ship crested over the horizon. Ruby unfolded Crescent Rose and peered through the scope. It was a relatively small ship, with a sheep's head in the front and a skull and crossbones on the sails, wearing a relatively silly hat on it. Pirates, just her luck.

Well, beggars couldn't be choosers, she supposed. Activating Petal Burst, she surged across the space between the them with Crescent Rose and Floating Array, flying over the sea and landing on the deck of the ship ready for a fight.

Only to come across a boy around her age wearing the same silly hat, a redhead girl, a sleeping green haired man, and a dark haired boy who had fallen onto his butt as she reformed.

"Uh, hi?" Ruby said, "Sorry to burst in, literally, but I was kinda stuck on an island and you were the first boat I saw in, like, a week. Can I talk to your captain?"

"Shishishishishi," the hat wearing boy laughed, "That's me! I'm Luffy, what's your name?"

"You're Captain?" The mystery girl said, "Ok, I'm Ruby Rose. You mind giving me a ride to the next island with a town? I hate to ask, but after being stuck on an island for a couple of weeks I was starting to think I would go insane!"

"Yeah, that would be pretty bad," Luffy said, "Who marooned you, and why?"

"I just woke up there one day," Ruby shrugged, "I wasn't even on a boat before!"

"That sounds really bad!" Luffy said.

"Really suspicious, more like," Nami muttered just loud enough for them to hear, "Who doesn't want to tell someone why they were marooned."

"I'm serious, I wasn't marooned by anyone!" Ruby insisted, "I don't even know where I am. Is this near Mistral? Vale? Vacuo?"

"Nami?" Luffy asked, and the navigator sighed before going into her room on the Going Merry and walking out with a map laying it on the table. Ruby stared at it for a long few minutes, confusion on her face.

"I've never seen anywhere like this before," she finally admitted, frustration in her voice.

"Weird," Luffy said, picking his nose as he did, "So what was with the flower thing. Did you eat a Devil Fruit?"

"A Devil Fruit?" Ruby asked.

"Did you eat a really bad and weird looking fruit, and then get powers?"

"Uh, yeah, actually? Is that called a Devil Fruit?"

"Are we just moving past the fact that she apparently doesn't know where she is?" Ussop asked.

"Yep," Luffy said, answering both questions at once, "like me, I ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, it makes me into a rubber man, see?"

He pulled his cheek, stretching his face and getting a little giggle out of Ruby. Hey! Job done!

"What's yours let you do other than turn into petals?" Luffy said, excitedly. Ruby smiled, and then her skin turned into something Luffy was very used to, tree bark.

"Woah," Luffy said, "So you're like, a plant girl! Can you do anything else?"

"I can grow plants now?" Ruby said, a small tree growing in her hand, a tiny banana hanging from it.

"I like meat more, but that's still pretty cool," Luffy said, "Uh, a little warning about Devil Fruit, you can't swim anymore. You'll sink if you touch too much water."

"I- what are these fruits!?" Ruby asked, "they made me a plant person, they make it so you can't swim, not that I liked swimming but come on!"

"Nobody knows," Nami said, "I'm Nami, by the way, and this is Ussop, and the one who's sleeping is Zoro. Why don't you get some rest, I guess, if we're carrying you? Being stuck on a deserted island can't have been fun."

"I'd rather practice with these new powers, honestly," Ruby said sheepishly, "anywhere I can do that safely?"

"One second," Luffy said, shaking Zoro awake, "Hey, Zoro, we got a new crewmate and she wants to fight!"

"I didn't say tha-!"

"The best way to learn how to use your Devil Fruit is to fight with it!" Luffy said, thinking back to his childhood under Dadan

Wait the minute, did Ruby eat the Woods-Woods Fruit? The power of nature used by Admiral Ryokugyu, or Aramaki, the fanatic fanboy of Akainu and World Nobles?

Because that's really cool and also mean Aramaki is dead in this story, which I don't mind. He's nuts when revealing his true colors at Wano arc.

Awesome and since she's the Woods Human, Aramaki is indeed dead which the Devil Fruit circulated and ended up with Ruby. I can see him being K.I.A. for literally biting off more than he can chew in the New World.
No, he jist never ate the fruit. Remember (for some goddamn reason, consider the man has a boner for the World Government that causes Akainu to tell him to calm the fuck down), Aramaki wad recruited through Conscription during the timeskip. He's just a civilian who has no reason to have eaten the fruit at this point in time, and now Ruby beat him to it.

Fair enough, it's a stroke of luck Ruby got the Woods-Woods Fruit before Aramaki did, and she will use it in good hands.

Speaking of Aramaki, he does come off as an overeager rookie who wanted to prove himself to his idol Akainu that he is more than worthy of his Admiral rank he received after making the cut among the list of candidates upon being conscripted in the World Military Draft.

And that he only attacked King and Queen and other Beast Pirates because they were weakened from their defeat at the hands of Luffy and his friends and allies in the Raid of Onigashima. Along with attacking Wano when he thought it is ripe for the taking despite facing strong opposition in Adult Momo in Dragon form, Yamato and the Nine Red Scabbards.

And then Aramaki quickly folded and ran away when Shanks paralyzed him with his Haki miles away from the sea.

"One second," Luffy said, shaking Zoro awake, "Hey, Zoro, we got a new crewmate and she wants to fight!"

Ruby will be like 'stop slicing me to pieces' as she reattaches the limbs Zoro removed once he learned she can regenerate. and Zoro will be like 'then learn to fight better and I won't be slicing you as much' before slicing and dicing her again.

Since Ruby noticed that her Semblance apparently evolved after eating the Woods-Woods Fruit, would her Aura be evolved too as well?

If so, it would mean her nature Logia body got some extra shielding from her soul and Ruby would regenerate a lot faster than standard Logias.

Zoro is gonna have a hard time cutting through Ruby. And also Ruby did deliberately cut herself out of morbid curiosity to see her new abilities earlier.

When has Zoro backed down when he failed to cut something? a stronger aura means he's going to try harder to cut her. I'm not sure how her Aura will stand up to someone that one day slices mountains. her learning Haki will be required to survive.
True, that will come in handy when Zoro defeat Mr. 1/Daz Bones who use Dice-Dice Fruit in their duel at Alabasta. To be able to cut through seemingly unbreakable things already earlier than canon after learning from his spars with Ruby.

Perhaps Mihawk using his small knife or even his Black Blade infused with his Haki to actually make Ruby bleed for the first time which would give her a wake up call that being a Logia doesn't mean invincibility if she tries to fight him to save Zoro at Baratie.

He would say, "Overconfident Logias have short lifespans in the Grand Line, little one. Let this be a reminder of your mortality."

Oh shit no one asked yet…. That means I get to ask…. Ruby unlocks everyone's aura when? Semblances get?

That does sound interesting. And I can see their enemies and allies have confused reactions when the non-Devil Fruit using Straw Hats being able to swim without issue despite using their Semblances that correlate with their character and personality.

Now here's the question, what would the semblance of each member be?

Nami being able to tell the direction to stashes of treasure or gold?

Brooks being able to inspire people with song?

There's was debate over on SB on whether or not I should have that happen. Some people feel very passionately it takes away (for example) Zoro's coolness if he gets an Aura and a Semblance beyond his obviously superhuman ability to pull turning into an Asura out of his ass. One person even suggested everyone but the Monster Trio get it because those three don't need it.

My current standpoint is "Remnantians can definitely unlock Haki, I'm more up in the air about Aura on One Piecers and will decide at some point".

Fair but if I could offer a bit of advice? A semblance doesn't need to be powerful or combat related.

Sanji's semblance could be keeping food fresh longer. Zoro's could be an internal compass that leads him to his friends so he get's lost less often. Luffy… I don't know meat radar or knowing when his crew are sad? And that's just off the top of my head you could definitly have fun with semblances without affecting their canon combat styles. Point is don't let people pressure you one way or another, when you can get creative and rules lawyer around bullshit.

What about Sanji's secret desire to be invisible? Correlates with his tragic past of Judge and his three brothers treating him like crap and he wanted to disappear before Reiju broke him free and telling him to escape, leading him to eventually meeting his real father, Zeff.
I mean if you want to go all deep about it sure but invisibility has obvious combat applications and I was trying to avoid those because the idea was to suggest abilities that won't trigger rage in the fans who can't deal with change… ugh that sentence feels wrong! It's fanfiction! Change is the point.

Yeah, those guys need to chill. Things get real boring if everything goes the same like in canon. Fanfiction is supposed to explore different ideas and what ifs that go in another direction.

Anyway, can you imagine the hilarity if non-Devil Fruit Straw Hats with Aura & Semblance swim which baffles their enemies and allies who thought they would drown?

Although it would catch attention of the World Government and Marines including Vegapunk who would like to study and figure out how that works from his scientific point of view.

Zoro having an internal compass that leads him to his friends could also still lean into his poor sense of direction. "Luffy is this way, let's go" proceeds to cut through a stone wall instead of walking down the street.

Edit: it could also be fun if he either doesn't figure out that it is his semblance, or doesn't bother communicating that. When asked to go somewhere he still gets completely lost, but when asked to go help one of the crew he somehow gets right to them. Because canon Zoro is really confidently wrong with his directions, full commit "it's that way"

Yeah, off the SB record, it was originally my intention to give the Strawhats Aura. Feels like it's too much of "oh, Ruby is super special awesome" to give her Aura and Haki and a Logia. I just backed off to reexamine my prospects once people started debating the topic.
