Welcome to The Pistachion Plot.

In this quest you take the place of a chronologically displaced pistachion (sentient pistachio based humanoid) Derek, who will become the King of a new pistachion society that you will form throughout the prologue and play through the rest of the quest.

The prologue will be looser mechanic wise, acting more like a campaign or adventure, with the goal being that it gives you the opportunity to choose how your organization operates.

After the prologue, by the time we catch up to the modern day (time paradoxes galore), you'll hopefully have the resources at your disposal to be able to start influencing the world of DVV: Gridlocked at large.
Prologue: 1955 Part 1
Location
USA
You are Derek, the last and now first of your kind: a sapient, humanoid pistachio based creature referred to as a Pistachion. After serving for years as a soldier in a global war against humanity centuries in the future, you ended up stranded in the year 1955.

Upon realizing your predicament, you decided the time was right to do what your father had trained you to do: find an adult, impersonate them, and take over the world. You began drafting a long term plan for world domination which would have begun by impersonating Orton Mahlson and using his Dr. Zone franchise as a launching pad for your eventual takeover of the world...

..But soon after you had started drafting your plan, you realized that the world you entered wasn't quite what you were expecting based on your limited knowledge of history.

The entertainment industry had been dominated by and later rejected animated creatures of chaotic whimsy. Superhumans wielding phenomenal biological powers and gadgets had faced off every other week against similarly-armed villains who arrogantly boasted of their intentions for world domination, and sapient anthropomorphized animals had settled in semi-isolation in the northwest.

Your plan (and methods) might need some serious adjustments.

---------------------------------------------------------

World Domination?

The year is 1955. You've stolen the identity of a random Danville resident that won't be missed, converted his home into your workstation slash plant nursery with five pistachion sprouts that should be adult size and ready to help you infiltrate humanity in about four to five years.

There is just one thing left to decide: Once the pieces are in place and your sprouts are ready, how will you take your first steps towards world domination?

[] Operation: Mahlson

You will retool your original plan to make it work despite the apparent changes to the timeline. You'll claim the identity of Orton Mahlson for yourself, take over the Dr. Zone franchise, gaining influence within Danville to make sure that no Murphy will be able to stop you. Considering the state of the entertainment industry, you might need to toe the line and avoid dealing with Toons altogether.

-[] Replace Orton Mahlson and his staff as they are developing the Dr. Zone franchise.

[] Operation: Green Thumb

You had discovered an anomaly regarding the Kansas Government. As far as the law is concerned, there are no requirements to be eligible for the position of Governor. If you were to build a sizable population of eligible voters over time, you could secure your election for Governor, potentially even if your status as a Pistachion were revealed. However, you would have to cover your tracks and carefully plan for a way to ease the introduction of Pistachions to the public while also justifying your hiding. Or you could just keep hiding and growing in numbers until you're too entrenched to feasibly remove. Either way, your first step will be to impersonate local farmers and governments near Topeka, Kansas to grow your population and slowly take over the state from there.

-[] Focus on taking over the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics to issue 'legitimate' birth certificates.
-[] Focus on taking over Kansas farmland by replacing the local farmers to rapidly grow more pistachions.

[] Operation: Tourist Trap

You had discovered a small yet famous resort, Bombay Beach, in a relatively isolated part of Southern California. If you and your Pistachions took over the locals and worked your way up, you could potentially replace a famous celebrity at the lakeside resort and use their fame and wealth for your own purposes. It's a potentially risky plan, but it could mean you quickly gain a lot of resources that could be channeled into other goals if you manage to pull it off.

-[] Attempt to replace a celebrity identity for long-term gain and use of their fame.
-[] Focus on anonymously acquiring as much wealth and other resources as you can.

[] Operation: Prophet

Religion is still going strong at this point in history and there are many smaller churches and organizations with extremely loyal members with new ones being formed regularly. If you could successfully form an organization of your own you could potentially cultivate loyal followers that could bolster your plans of world domination in addition to your future Pistachion army, but it could draw some unwanted attention.

-[] Don't start a religion specifically, but try to build huge fame and fandom for yourself after you replace 'Orton Mahlson'. (Mixed with Operation: Mahlson)
-[] Choose an area to start your religious organization
--[] Start a semi-traditional religion in Kansas to secure more local loyalty (Mixed with Operation: Green Thumb)
--[] Start a more cult-like organization in Southern California to truly ensnare your targets (Mixed with Operation: Tourist Trap)
--[] Write in

---------------------------------------------------------

Free Time

You have some free time that you could spend enjoying yourself, learning about humanity, or developing skills while waiting to implement your plan. Who knows, whatever you do or learn could come in handy. Choose 3 actions for yourself.

[] Take a trip across the United States
[] Join an improv troupe
[] Study a subject or learn a skill
-[] Write in a topic or skill of your choice. The more focused the better the results could be, but be reasonable.
[] Immerse yourself in the entertainment industry
[] Immerse yourself in literature
[] Write In

---------------------------------------------------------

Pistachion Sprouts

Pistachion sprouts are grown on the branches of mature pistachions and are then planted into the ground for a period of time. Once their limbs grow, sprouts are just as intelligent and mobile as fully grown pistachions, however they start at the size of a pistachio. They can continue to grow by consuming food and water instead of choosing to remain rooted in the ground. Either way, the first cluster of sprouts that you've had growing is finally ready to experience the wonders of life. But most importantly, you'll have to eventually pick one of them to become your heir.

[] What will you name your five initial Pistachion sprouts?

Voting is by plan. Here is an example vote for demonstration purposes:

[] Plan: Future Governor
-[] Operation: Green Thumb
--[] Focus on taking over The Kansas Division of Vital Records to issue 'legitimate' birth certificates.
-[] Free Time
--[] Study a subject or learn a skill
---[] Public Speaking
---[] Politics
--[] Take a trip across the United States
-[] What will you name your five Pistachion sprouts?
--[] Billy, Joe, Samuel, Sophia, Holly

Pistachion Information
Considering you are a Pistachion, here is a list of general knowledge about Pistachion biology.
  • General Living
    • Don't need to sleep.
    • As long as they get enough sunlight and water, they are mostly fine. Emphasis on the sunlight more than the water. (pistachio trees typically grow best in hot dryer climates)
    • Can make do with occasional meals as a replacement/substitute for soil.
    • They are less energetic during the winter months.
  • Lifespan
    • An adult pistachion can create 5 or so sprouts per year.
    • A sprout grows from the depicted size of about 3 inches to an adult Pistachion in about 5 years.
      • Just Sprouted - Approximately 3 Inches tall
      • 1 Year(s) Old - Approximate size of a 5 year old human
      • 2 Year(s) Old - Approximate size of a 9 year old human
      • 3 Year(s) Old - Approximate size of a 13 year old human
      • 4 Year(s) Old - Approximate size of an 18 year old human
      • 5 Year(s) Old - Approximate size of adult human, starts having sprouts of their own.
    • A sprout has the same capability for intelligence and mobility of an adult, they are simply smaller and lack life experience/knowledge. Due to this, there has historically been less of a parental relationship between a Pistachion and their sprouts, and more of a communal one (It taking a village to raise a kid). Considering how many sprouts you're going to have in just 5 years, you expect that you won't be able to parent the rest like you will your first five.
    • Pistachions have a much longer lifespan (unknown how long exactly, but it's assumed to be at least 300 years) and don't become weaker with age like a human does
  • Combat Potential
    • Pistachions are stronger, tougher, and hit harder than humans, especially considering they have wood for limbs rather than soft flesh. But wood has weaknesses of its own.
    • Pistachions are capabale of shooting a thorny or smooth vine out of their hands that can be used in a similar manner to a lasso or a whip. They can hold onto it or let go with ease.
  • ???
    • There is more to be discovered about Pistachion biology.

Mechanics & XP
Mechanics

Non-personal actions have DC.
Result of the action is based on the roll result vs the DC.

For personal actions, this roll result is a 1d100 plus (or minus) occasional modifiers.
For non-personal actions, this roll result is a 1d100 that is further boosted by the character's stats, traits, additional hero unit(s) assigned, their loyalty, XP, plus (or minus) occasional modifiers.

The results of an action are as follows:
  • 1d100
    • If the 1d100 rolls a 1, the action is a critical failure.
    • If the 1d100 rolls a 100, an additional 1d100 is rolled, and the result is added to the total roll result.
      • This is referred to as the explosion threshold. Reducing the explosion threshold by 10 would mean that if the 1d100 rolls anywhere from 90 to 100, it would trigger an additional dice.
  • Roll Result
    • If the roll result is less than half of the DC, the action is a critical failure.
    • If the roll result is above critical failure range but below bare failure range, it is a boring regular failure.
    • If the roll result is at least 10 less than the DC but also below the DC, the action is a bare failure, which halves the DC for the next attempt.
    • If the roll result is at least the DC or higher, the action is a success.
    • If the roll result is at least twice the DC or higher, the action is a critical success.
    • If the roll result is at least thrice the DC or higher, the action is a triple critical success... (and so on)

The DC is 100
  • Roll result 49, critical failure
  • Roll result 50, failure
  • Roll result 89, failure
  • Roll result 90, bare failure
  • Roll result 99, bare failure
  • Roll result 100, success
  • Roll result 199, success
  • Roll result 200, critical success
  • Roll result 299, critical success
  • Roll result 300, triple critical success

XP

You can be rewarded XP for omakes. 1 XP can be spent to improve the roll by 1, reduce the DC by 1, or reduce the explosion threshold by 1. Maximum 10 XP per action. XP can normally not be assigned to personal actions, but as an extra bonus they can be during the prologue.

Current XP Totals
  • Stratagemini: 5 XP

+5 to rolls during the prologue related to Operation: Green Thumb

After you made up your mind to go with Operation Green Thumb, you sold nearly everything you had acquired from the man whose identity you stole and left on a road trip to Kansas to set up shop for the first phase of your plan.

The drive from Danville to Topeka took over 13 hours, going through Colorado and the majority of Kansas itself, but thanks to your Pistachion biology and having a 'convertible car', you were able to get enough sunlight and drink enough water to feel energetic during the whole car ride there, it's not like you need to sleep like a human does.

After arriving in Topeka, you went over to scope out the office of Vital Statistics and plan your next move.

Your first choice would be to start working there for a while, identify who would be a good option to replace, and once you find the opportunity, you would strike. It would mean one more body to deal with, but it could be a much easier way to gain the influence and authority needed to issue legal records and genuine new identities for yourself and your sprouts, rather than needing to replace a human that already exists

Alternatively, you could try to work your way up the ladder honestly, minimizing the amount of risk of being caught out but potentially having to deal with a slower start to your scheme. Either way, you'll have the next few years of your life ahead of you.

Choose One:
[] Apply to the job with the goal of replacing someone with more authority. (Martial)
[] Apply to the job with the goal of working your way up yourself. (Diplomacy)

While you didn't quite have a home yet, with the amount of money you had pilfered from your current identity, you should be able to find a home on the market for about $20,000. You tried to think about what you remembered about housing prices...

DC 45
Stewardship Check: 70 + 22 = 92
Critical Success!

...That's right! Housing prices just grew and grew and grew, about 5% per year without a sign of stopping, besides a large crash in prices from a recession in the early 2000s that had tanked the whole economy with it. If you were to invest in real estate, you could gain tons of equity value over time and try to position yourself to make use of your foreknowledge of the crash if you were to notice the warning signs of a housing market bubble. While the prospect of making a great return on investment is alluring, you don't have the resources or time to spare just now until your sprouts are fully grown and you've gained control over the office of vital statistics.

While you were a natural at planting individual plants to repopulate the depleted pistachion numbers, there was a lot about industrial agriculture that you didn't quite understand because you didn't need to until now. Soil quality, irrigation and drainage, crop rotation, when to plant crops, dealing with insects, harvesting.

And that was before you learned that the majority of the agriculture output in Kansas wasn't plants, but beef from cattle.

While pistachions traditionally had a more collective society, where everyone saw your father, the King as a central figure of authority, compared to the family dynamic of humans, you thought that with your smaller number there might be some value in learning how to best raise young children if you could apply it to your own family. To serve that end, you decided to read a popular book regarding such a topic: The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care. You think you've learned enough to try to apply it in practice.

(+10 to Allura, Hunk, Katie, Keith, and Lance's personal actions for the next turn of the prologue)

-[X] Immerse yourself in literature
35

Once you arrived in Topeka, the capital of Kansas, you went to a local bookstore to see what books might be interesting to read. The sheer quantity of the volumes available to choose from overwhelmed you, so you simply asked the employee about a book that everyone in Kansas has read, and ended up purchasing just one book: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

After reading the book, you didn't really find it interesting, but you made sure to remember key details so you could cite information about it in conversations. At least it's one more thing you have in common with everyone else around you..

(New Personal Action Unlocked: Read a book: select title published by current year)

-[X] What will you name your five pistachion sprouts?
--[X] Allura, Hunk, Katie, Keith, and Lance

You don't quite remember where, when, or why these names appeared in your head, but you decided that they would be a great fit for your 5 sprouts, your three sons and two daughters. Not that gender really mattered for pistachions, as the original strain was based off a variant of the pistachio that grew both male and female flowers on their branches, allowing for both male and female pistachions to sprout more of themselves.

Choose a Personal Action for each sprout. Due to their small stature, actions that would require assistance from Derek to setup will be assumed to receive it.

Diplomacy Check: Work your way up the ladder.
DC 80: 68+15+5=88
Success!

While the work of the job itself was tedious and easy, the real challenge came from the work involved with actually getting a promotion. You had to be well liked by your boss and cultivate the perception that you were more competent than your peers, which is difficult when you're all doing pretty basic tasks.

But in the end your patience, forward thinking, and your charm is what made people in the department trust you with more authority. And thanks to your experience of actually working at the office over the past year, you've gotten well acquainted with the workflow and thus have devised a way to generate genuine identities for yourself and all of your sprouts. By the time they are adults, they will have all the proper identifications stating as such.

Of course, your numbers will eventually swell to a degree that this forgery will become unmanageable by any one individual, so you'll have to take the steps to further infiltrate the local government to keep the momentum going at scale. So you'll need more of your sprouts to work their way up like you did, in order to be in an eventual management positions in various agencies so they can hire pistachions and fire any remaining humans.

In order to make the process of blending in as smooth as possible, you'll make sure that the legal first name for everyone's the same as their real one. But the last names should be different from each other.

Choose a full legal name for you and your five sprouts:

[] Derek

[] Allura

[] Hunk

[] Katie

[] Keith

[] Lance

It's been quite a year for your sprouts. Now that they are a year old, they are about the size of a 5 year old human.

After you told the sprouts some of your plans, Alura decided to learn everything she could regarding social interactions so she could herself climb the government ladder. Unfortunately she really could only socialize with the other sprouts and yourself in addition to watching some television.

You did notice a marginal improvement, but emphasis on the marginal. Perhaps she would learn more from interacting with other human beings?

Diplomacy +1.

-[X] Hunk
--[X] Roughhouse with the other sprouts
19+10=29
Vs Allura 23

After you told Hunk the story of your failed encounter with Milo Murphy, he seemingly decided that he needed to develop combat skills that could surpass even your own in order to deal with such formidable foes. Unfortunately, while he did manage to beat Allura in a "sparring match" which was more an awkward leaping tackle which led to a slap fight, he didn't manage to learn much from the ordeal.

-[X] Katie
--[X] Watch television (select show that aired during current year)
---[X] The Adventures of Spin and Marty (A western appropriate for kids)
94+10=104!

One day you decided to purchase and setup a television so you and your sprouts could learn more about human society. Everything was fine until Katie had found a show that resonated with her inner being and would hog the television to make sure she caught every episode.

It didn't seem like much to you, just a show about some boys that lived on a ranch, rode horses, and used rope-based lassos to wrangle with cattle. But she couldn't get enough of it.

And when you told her that the agricultural industry in Kansas was partially dominated by cattle ranching, she replied by telling you what she wanted to do once she got older: learn everything there was to know about ranching, own a ranch, and teach everything she knew to her sprouts.

Considering you were already planning on having your sprouts takeover a local farm/ranch to have more room to grow a large population quickly, you figure that her passion could be a cornerstone for pistachion dominance of the industry.

Happy Trails: Katie has developed a large appreciation and passion for cowboy and ranching culture. She gets +10 to all actions that involve cowboys and ranchers, or are related to what a cowboy or rancher might do, such as firing a gun, using a lasso, riding a horse, dealing with cattle, and so on.

-[X] Keith
---[X] Stealth
81+10=91

After seeing you work on the adult disguises for your five sprouts, Keith had inquired if you could make disguises for the "sizes in between".

You knew this might be a potential risk, so you issued him a challenge of sneaking up on you to see if he would be up for the task.

And one day you opened your briefcase and saw a rat shuffling around - only to realize it was Keith in a homemade costume. You figure he's earned it, but would want to wait until they at least look a little older to avoid too much attention.

Intrigue +3
Starting in 1957 (turn after next), the sprouts will be able to use disguises to interact in human society as young preteens.

-[X] Lance
--[X] Ask your father about the plan.
26+10=36

Lance had asked about the plan but he didn't quite grasp the complexity of infiltrating a modernized society. And to be fair, there was a lot of complexity that you yourself were still working out, and that was just on the government side of things. There were still plenty of aspects of human society that you would have to eventually infiltrate for your goal of taking over the state.

The high tension world of Super fashion
The high tension world of Super fashion

You could cut the tension in the auction hall with a sewing needle.

Edna Mode, widely considered the queen of superhero fashion, had just been outbid for specialty fabric for the first time since the beginning years of her career.

The worst part of it was that the culprit seemed completely oblivious to the danger he was in.

"Ah, Edna, better luck next time."

Across the room, Senor Senior, world's 10th richest man (fast approaching the 9th spot), smiled honestly at the woman who was one of the most feared people in the fashion industry.

Senor sighed, "I'm so sorry our reunion had to go this way, I tried to get my agent to set up a meeting, but for some reason he never managed to get in contact with your people."

He continued despite Edna's readily apparent eye twitch and the slowly backing away audience members, "I've been wanting to keep up with you for years, your designs are fascinating, and although I love the classics, I can appreciate what you've done with yourself, how have you been?"

Edna, understanding the needs of keeping up appearances in front of investors, took a deep, long breath, and spoke.

"Oh, you know dahling, I've been having difficulty with the whispers about the relocation act that is being fast tracked. It's been concerning my customers greatly, you know how it is. A happy customer is a generous one"

Senor nodded "Ah, yes, I've been hearing whispers at the billionaires club. The opinions are mixed to say the least. A lot of my colleagues rely on heroes to protect their massive ostentatious vaults. I myself have even gotten aid from them from time to time. It's why I came to the states, I wanted to help out the people who have, how you say, been rubbing me and my friends backs"

Senor went up and grabbed the massive roll of fabric he had just purchased and hoisted it over his shoulder, grunting at the exertion. Managing his massive estate with so few employees having given him far more exercise than most of the fabulously wealthy.

Edna, nodding at what he said, approached him and whispered. "I believe that there are talks about supporting the opposition to the act in the industry, I'm sure you would be a welcome member."

Senor beamed "Ah, excellent, have your agent send the information to mine, I'm looking forward to our talks. Hopefully we can ensure the continuation of the super heroing tradition in these trying times."

As he walked to the door, he called over his shoulder at Edna "I simply must be going, I have a tight schedule, and I need to keep to it, I'm sure you understand." Seconds before the door closed behind him, he remarked mostly to himself "I also must look into trying out this superhero costume design thing, I think this fabric would make an excellent material for capes."

Humming to himself as he left, he never heard the earth shattering "No Capes" that would come to result in the deafening of several of the people standing in the auction hall.

My literal first ever omake and the first piece of creative writing I've done in a long time.

Nystical said that omakes can be used on personals within reason on discord since we are currently in a heavily personal focused section of the quest, so I figured I would toss my hat into the ring.

I always interpreted Senor Senior to be a fashion designer, given how rich he is and the fact that Junior appears to be a fashion model, so this is my attempt to get him involved in affairs.

He's pretty much the only Kim possible character that is reasonable to be around in the current era, and I figured unflinchingly polite and tradition obsessed would be interesting to rub up against Edna modes innovation and fiery temper. I'm sure someone who is a better character writer could do a lot more with it though. If anyone has ideas feel free to write them.

Prologue: 1956 Part 1
World Kansas Domination

The year is 1956. You, Derek Kerman, have worked your way up into a position of relative authority in the Kansas Office of Vital Statistics under a different name via a stolen identity. While it's a great first step that has allowed you to create legal identities for yourself, your 5 children, and the rest of the sprouts that will be produced by either yourself or your children, it's still just the first step of your plan.

Speaking of the plan, now you're in a bit of an awkward position. You've accomplished a crucial first step, but now you kind of have to wait around for your children to be ready to infiltrate human society themselves before you can expand your 'operation', as you can't be in two places at once.

Still, there are some things you can do in the meantime.

[] Operation: Green Thumb

Pick Two actions in total (Not from each category). You currently have an extra +5 to all rolls relating to Operation: Green Thumb until the end of the prologue.

Martial
-[] Rob a bank (loud)
DC 70

You had checked out the local bank and were shocked to notice a lack of security cameras. Then you remembered that they wouldn't be a thing for at least another decade or so. Perhaps it would be prudent to fabricate a generic human disguise to rob the bank, stash the money somewhere, and to retrieve it later? It'll take some time to come up with a plan and acquire the tools necessary, but you think it could be done.

(Reward: Loadsamoney, can attempt many purchase actions)

Diplomacy
-[] Win Friends and Influence People
DC 75

You'll admit, you don't exactly have the best grasp of human conversation. While you were able to impress your bosses, you feel as if you have more room to grow in the art of persuasion, and a good first step would be to get some practical experience.

(Reward: A better understanding of humanity and how to influence people, potential career advancement)

Stewardship
-[] Save your money to purchase something
DC 50

Buying the home ate through "your" savings, but you have a good salary to keep you afloat. Perhaps you should focus on saving and investing your money in order to make some big purchases? You could cut back on food and start gathering nutrients from the ground at night.

(Reward: Unlocks ability to attempt one purchase action: invest in real estate, purchase farm, purchase ranch, purchase firearms, etc.)

Intrigue
-[] Design a "Derek Kerman" disguise.
DC 35

If there is one thing you've noticed while infiltrating humanity is that appearances are everything. Perhaps you should consider carefully how you will design the appearance of "Derek Kerman", who if you play your cards right might just become the Governor of Kansas!

(Reward: "Derek Kerman" identity created, ??? when prologue ends)

-[] Rob a bank (silent)
DC 90

You had checked out the local bank and were shocked to notice a lack of security cameras. Then you remembered that they wouldn't be a thing for at least another decade or so. Perhaps it would be prudent to fabricate a generic human disguise to rob the bank, stash the money somewhere, and to retrieve it later? It'll take some time to come up with a plan and acquire the tools necessary, but you think it could be done.

(Reward: Loadsamoney, can attempt many purchase actions)

Learning
-[] Study the framework of government
DC 70

There is a lot of complexity regarding the plan besides just running for governor and winning. There is the federal government, branches in the federal government, branches in the state government, and the local government(s) of various districts and counties. You need to learn all you can in order to determine your infiltration priorities.

(Reward: Can better plan the government angle of taking over the state)
