Chapter 153: Siege of Tokyo
That fucking emperor!!!
He promised me that he would liberate us from this crisis and protect the people when he appointed me as his prime minister!!! And what did he do instead? He turns into a full blown dictator! My words no longer matter now. I wonder what my role actually is at this point.
At the rate he's forcing the people to work for military logistics and executing them when they either refused or can't work anymore, he's gonna kill us all long before the Occult Killer comes!
And I know that the Occult Killer is a walking nuclear bomb... but he must be using the Occult Killer as an excuse to achieve that reunification he so desired, blowing a single serial killer's threat out of proportion for his political interests. His preparation is excessive! Even a walking nuclear bomb has his limits! There's no reason to oppress the people for it! There's got to be some other way!
I bet he's actually preparing to go to war with other country with the military power he's amassing right now!
The one week threat that the serial killer issued with that fancy hologram is fast approaching and I need to do something about this. I need to kill that old emperor. That's why I hired an assassin to kill him. Naturally I hired an outsider to do the job. Said outsider is an awakener so it should be an easy job to kill a mere old man.
It's supposed to be easy… but he summoned me today. I have a bad feeling about this.
As I entered the throne room of the imperial palace (which is finally being used after he's done hiding in the shadows) I see him sitting in the throne with his usual scowl, the face of a man with so much hatred and distrust for the world he wants to conquer… and beside him is the head of the assassin I sent to kill him impaled on a stake. His guards, clad in black military uniform with the gold chrysanthemum crests etched on them, stood guard beside him. They look strong and intimidating. I bet they are awakeners too.
I tried my best to hide my surprise by keeping a neutral expression, a challenging task even for a politician like me, as I bowed before the emperor.
"I greet his majesty Akuto, the Emperor of Japan." I say as I keep my head low in an attempt to hide my face and avoid showing any hint of emotion.
"Prime Minster Shibuki. You don't look so well."
"I-I am perfectly fine, your majesty."
"Does the sight of this assassin's head bother you, Shibuki?"
"N-No, your majesty. Though I am… curious as to whom that man is…"
"Really? You don't recognize him?" The emperor asked with a gentle tone while exuding pressure. He definitely suspects me!
"No… I don't…"
"This man sneaked into the imperial palace and tried to kill me last night. And as you can see, he's dead. The one who sent this assassin should be punished severely, don't you think?"
"I-I agree, your majesty."
"Will you do the honors then, Shibuki?"
"A pardon, your majesty?"
"Will you execute the one who sent the assassin yourself if I order you?"
"Y-Yes. Absolutely."
"Then do it. Right now." He says as he stood up from his throne as tossed something to me. Said object fell on the floor right beside me with a metallic sound. It's a wakizashi. With my head bowed down, I can see the blade gleaming clearly right before my eyes. He's telling me to commit seppuku!
"You know what to do." He says… although his voice came from behind me instead of from the throne. When did he…?
I look up and see no one sitting or standing in the throne and when I look back, I see him standing behind me with a katana in his hand.
"What's wrong, Shibuki? You know what to do, right? It's not like the next generation has forgotten about this old tradition." He says with that permanent scowl in his face.
"You didn't think I wouldn't know about your little scheme, did you? It was obvious who sent that little assassin to kill me. You have outlived your usefulness when you failed to pacify the crowd of foolish people but now you decide to turn traitor. As always, the youngsters never fail to disappoint me."
"How could I not? When I saw what you did to the people?" I reply defiantly, finally no longer hiding my emotions and exposing my hatred of him.
"I did what was necessary to do what you could not."
"But oppressing and killing the people!? How is that necessary!?"
"It was ABSOLUTELY necessary! There would be chaos if I didn't do that! And foolish youngsters like you will never understand. Now enough arguments! Proceed with your execution." He says while pointing his katana to me. I turn back to pick up the wakizashi on the floor. But instead of stabbing myself with it, I turn back to him, intending to stab him with it. There's no way even the awakener guards who stood far away beside the throne could react to this! Even if I die, I must finish what I sta—
"Admirable effort. But futile. If only you used this courage in MY service instead of against me. What a waste." The emperor mockingly says as he held the blade between two fingers. Despite him only using two fingers, I couldn't move the blade at all.
"You… You're an awakener!?" I ask in disbelief.
"I am more than an awakener. I am a god in human form."
"You… You're actually doing that…? Deifying yourself?"
"I am he who will save all of mankind from extinction. Of course I have to be divine."
"You… I can't believe it. You're delusional!"
"Delusional? I've always been realistic and pragmatic. You're the delusional one if you think fancy words can stop the people from rioting. I did what I did in order to save them from themselves."
"Tch! Arguing with a heartless monster like you will get us nowhere. Fine! Just kill me! I'll be waiting for you in the afterlife, which won't be a long wait." I say with a smirk. Even if he survives the Occult Killer's attack, he won't last long with how old he is.
"That's where you're wrong, Shibuki. As a demigod, I shall live forever. Not even the Occult Killer can end me." He says something ominous as he plunged his katana into my heart. Then I see him smile… no… grin for the first time.
"And I'll have so many poor people to thank for giving me immortality." He whispers with a sickening grin that only a demon would wear, obviously taking pleasure in my death.
He… he sacrificed people's lives to extend his own? How? When? Who? How many? What…?
I can't believe this… I absolutely can't believe this… Under the rule of this devil, Japan is doomed. And I have been powerless to stop it the whole time… Forgive me… everyone…
With his sickening grin as the last thing I see, I close my eyes and allow death to take me.
I stood in the walls of Tokyo alongside other fighters from Akihabara. We stood out because of how colourful our costumes are, how we look like a group of cosplayers while everyone else are dressed either in military uniforms or in bodysuits… or in traditional Shinto or Buddhist monk robes… though there are other outliers such as the Kamen Rider faction who unexpectedly joined us.
One week has passed… and as promised, The Occult Killer brought his army to attack Tokyo. Tokyo's defenders consist of more than just the imperial forces but also fighters from various factions who answered the emperor's call to arms, including the occultist faction.
As numerous as the defenders are, they are still shocked when they see the armies that the Occult Killer brought.
A small army of masked men clad in black robes, some riding on top of monsters, the expected Doomsday Cultists,
An army of monsters, which are again, expected,
An army of soldiers clad in white bodysuits from the Kyoto faction, which is also expected, although the three giant robots that stand near them are unexpected,
And finally… an army of zombies and skeletons, which are completely unexpected. The unexpected part is how the army of the undead easily outnumbers the rest of the armies that the Occult Killer brought and made up the majority of his forces. I saw them firsthand in the Doomsday Cult headquarters… but even I didn't expect this many. How… how many people he killed to create those armies…? Their sheer numbers allows them to completely encircle all of Tokyo, letting no one escape the city.
Well… with how the emperor treated the people, it's not like anyone could leave even without the invasion to worry about.
Kuzaya-kun told me that nowadays the prime minister is just a public speaker while the emperor is actually in charge. Now that the dangers escalated this much, the emperor was forced to step out of the shadows. What he did is… excessive but… there's nothing I could do about it. Not with the threat of the Occult Killer looming out there.
Regretfully, I must turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people for now. It's… frustrating. But I promise that once the Occult Killer is dealt with, I'll help depose that tyrannical emperor. I swear it.
"You weren't kidding when you say he have zombies." Akane-chan says as she approaches me, probably because she barely has friendly face in her own faction. That creep Saejima is certainly someone to avoid and the simps who worships her does not count.
"Yeah. But even I didn't expect him to have this many. It's like a zombie apocalypse…"
"Where… do you think he got them?" Akane asks with uneasy expression, even though she knows the answer.
"From the settlements he destroyed… most likely."
"So many people… And here I thought we wouldn't lose so many people now that we have magic." Akane grits her teeth and clenches her fist as she says that.
"I know. The battle today may decide the fate of Japan… perhaps even all of humanity."
"Fate of humanity… I… I thought I could handle being a hero in his memory… but…" Akane says.
This is more difficult than I thought went unsaid.
"Do you think he's watching us, Akane? Your Stylish Bandit Slayer?"
"I believe so."
"Well… I happen to overhear that the one who beat the Kamen Rider faction into submission is someone who wears a balaclavas and wields two crowbars. He called himself the Stylish Bandit Slayer." I watch Akane's surprised reaction to this information, but she quickly subdued her reaction.
"No. That must be someone else using his name."
"You seem so sure of it, Akane."
"Yes… because I know he is dead."
"Is he… someone you knew?"
"Yes." Akane answers but refuses to elaborate. I suppose I can understand that given that I have my own secrets to hide.
As we are talking, we suddenly hear noises behind us with our enhanced hearing, noises… voices of many people… people who are protesting. Not now…. Not at a time like this!
"Akane-san! Mari-san!" One of the awakeners from Akihabara called out to the both of us but we ignored them and rushed to the source of the voices, the front gate of the imperial palace.
There we see a crowd of citizens of Tokyo protesting against the emperor's tyranny and accusing him of killing the prime minister and demanded that the emperor step down from his throne and abolish monarchy in favour of democracy.
Just before we could do anything to stop the people, the imperial palace gate opens and from the gate emerge a group of soldiers equipped with submachine guns.
"No!!" I shout but it's too late. The soldiers already opened fire against the people, slaughtering most of them. They did not chase the ones running away though, most likely so they can live to tell the tale.
The emperor emerges from behind the soldiers. He notices us and smirks smugly.
"Mari Blue of Akihabara and Nishino Akane of Messiah. What you're witnessing is an example of what happens to those who oppose me." The emperor says.
"Why…? There's no need to…" Akane trembles angrily and glares at him as she says that.
"It was absolutely necessary to destroy traitors without mercy lest they multiply like insects!"
"Insects? That's what your people are to you?" I ask him with a glare too.
"You youngsters will never understand. You are too naïve to tell me what to do. Now go back to the front lines and--" His words are cut as he noticed the pile of corpses twitching.
"What the…" The soldiers mutters as we all witness the corpses rise back from the dead and jumps towards them, biting them.
"Shoot! Shoot them all!" The emperor barks his orders but the zombies are fast and numerous, biting the soldiers one by one and ignoring the wounds they get from the guns. The bitten soldiers also join the ranks of the undead quickly and turn against the emperor just as quickly. But the emperor unsheathes his katana and fought back with strength none of us expected from an old man. It is unexpected that a politician turns himself into an awakener. He quickly dispatched the zombies attacking him but was unable to stop the ones running towards the city and the imperial palace.
"You two! Help me!" He commands us to help him with dispatching the zombies, and judging from the direction he's facing, he must have meant in the imperial palace, not the city. As he has demonstrated time and time again, he does not care about the people.
"Do you see now, your majesty? The result of your own action? You knew from my report that our enemy has the ability to create zombies… and yet here you are, providing him with more corpses. Because of you, our enemies have multiplied like insects. Who's the naïve one here, exactly?" I say with a smirk.
"Shut up! Do not question me! You are a citizen of the Empire of Japan! You must obey ME!!!"
"We are members of our factions first and foremost. We are here for an alliance, not because we are joining your faction. We are under no obligation to obey you." Akane replies.
"You… Daughter of the Nishino! I understand that my son hasn't been good to you! If you join me, I'll cancel your engagement with him!"
"I don't care about that anymore, scum. There are other things that concern me more than your silly politics."
"And what's that supposed to be, you worthless whore!?"
"Our enemy, the Occult Killer." Akane replies. It's good that she no longer allow the politics of her family to distract her from her purpose anymore. I smile at her as I hold her hand in mine as if in congratulations. Seeing as he cannot convince her, the emperor turns to me.
"You! Mari Blue! If you help me, I shall help you reconcile with your father!" The emperor says. I can only laugh at the ridiculousness of his offer.
"Why would I want to reconcile with my father? I hate him. You're so silly, your majesty." I say with a sarcastic chuckle.
"You witch!"
"Heh. That's appropriate. Because I am a Mystic Witch!" I say as I make my signature magical girl pose, which weirds him out judging from his hanging jaw.
"Stupid useless disobedient youngsters… Fine! I name you both traitors and I'll have your factions execute you both when we're done with this invasion!" The emperor barks his threat as he ran alone to the imperial palace, no doubt only caring about his home and not his people.
"We need to protect the people, Akane-chan."
"Agreed."
We both rush to the opposite direction, to do what the emperor refused to do, which is protecting the people.
Author's Note:
The Invasion of Tokyo starts and the emperor continues acting more and more like a villain despite the crisis, which will no doubt lead to his undoing.
