The Necromancer in Shadow (The Eminence in Shadow fanfic)

Chapter 32: The Revelation
Chapter 32: The Revelation

I was promoted into the 11th Seat of the Knights of Rounds to replace the recently deceased Nelson. No matter how reluctant Fenrir is at approving it, he cannot deny that my talents are needed to replace Nelson. I received my first dose of the Tear of Diablos and I consumed it. In addition to extending lifespan, it also gave me greater boost in magic power than the Red Pills and that boost lasts for an entire year.

As I would be put in charge of developing it, I was given all the data of past developments, including Lord Laugus' notes on the matter and was even given a finger of Diablos which is taken from the Midgar Sanctuary. They gave me a deadline of 5 years to improve the Tears. Heh heh heh. With all these resources in my hands, I will create and hoard the better version for myself, while giving the Rounds inferior products. It's my policy not to give the Cult the best product I have.

I was also tasked with eliminating Shadow Garden, which I accepted gladly. Though even they should accept that even I cannot destroy them that quickly so there is no deadline on this part.

Anyway, I suddenly got a surprise visit from Alexia. How rare. Usually she would avoid me like the plague. Why now? She even requested to speak with me one-on-one, which my sister is unhappy about, though I assured her that nothing bad's gonna happen. We entered the guest room and were served tea by the maids. We ordered everyone to leave. Only the two of us now.

"So, what do you want to talk about, Princess?"

"Hahhh… There's so much I wanna say that I don't know where to start." She replied while clutching her head.

"Well… you can start from the beginning."

"Hmph! Shut it, smartass." She took a deep breath before continuing.

"Let's see. I was sent by Iris on a mission to investigate Archbishop Drake about unsavoury rumors surrounding him while also attending the Goddess' Trial event as a VIP guest along with Princess Rose and the famous author Natsume Kafka. Archbishop Drake was murdered before I arrived and his replacement, a fat baldy named Nelson, dismissed all my questions about the incident. He was suspicious from the start but that's only the beginning." Ho ho ho. Tell me more.

"We watched the Goddess' Trial the next day. It was uneventful… until Shadow appeared in the arena, crashing the whole event." She said.

"Shadow!?" I pretended to be surprised.

"Yeah. And what's more, he summoned two dangerous characters in the Goddess' Trial, The Witch of Calamity, Aurora and Necromancer... or at least… a spirit version of him."

"Necromancer…!" I pretended to be angry while clenching my fist. It was worth practicing this reaction in front of a mirror, although the fact that she's distracted by her own story makes tricking her much easier.

"The battle was astonishing and flashy… but Shadow defeated them both. Then a huge gate appeared in the middle of the arena after Shadow left the scene. But suddenly, we were surrounded by Shadow Garden members." Yeah I saw that.

"They entered the gate, bringing the baldy along with that slu—Natsume, after telling us not to interfere. Obviously I refused and I entered the gate." How reckless of you, Alexia.

"What's their reaction towards you entering the gate?" I asked.

"Well… the leader of their group, an elf woman called Alpha, just said that perhaps I should see the truth too with my own eyes… And see the truth I did inside the Sanctuary. Alpha revealed Olivier's memories to us all."

"What truth?"

"That the hero Olivier… is a woman… and she… Alpha… was her descendant." Oh? That's new.

"And that the Cult has experimented on many children since ages ago, implanting them with Diablos cells, which caused many to die from the symptoms of Demonic Possession, which is caused by the Diablos cells." That I already know. But I pretended to be disgusted nonetheless.

"And only few survived that ordeal and obtained great power, one of them was Olivier. She was manipulated by the Cult into fighting Diablos so they can harvest more Diablos cells. She cut the left hand of Diablos and said hand was sealed in Lindwurm's Sanctuary, where the Cult's researchers, Nelson included, harvested its flesh to create the drugs… the Red Pills that enhances magical powers… and the Tears of Diablos, reserved only for the Knights of Rounds, 12 highest ranking executives of the Cult, one of them being Nelson himself. The Tears of Diablos seems to be a drug that extends their lifespan and was only 12 was produced every year, hence the 12 Knights of Rounds. That's how Nelson was able to survive for hundreds of years." Don't yawn, Claude…. Don't yawn…

"But that's not all… When Alpha interrogated him about Necromancer, suddenly the scenery changed from Olivier's memory to Necromancer's own…" Oh? Finally. They saw it.

"We saw an army of undead led by Necromancer fighting a black knight. Nelson theorized that Necromancer is an ancient being who was present in Lindwurm long before Diablos appeared, which is why the Cult never learned of his existence until recently, nor do they know about him being that ancient." I listened with great interest… trying hard not to grin… which coincidentally made me look angry and frustrated.

"Alpha theorized that the reason Necromancer was unknown until now was because he was defeated by the black knight, who she believed to be the past incarnation of their leader, Shadow. And now he has been revived, which is why the Sanctuary summoned him when Shadow appeared, and also why his memory was revealed to us." Yes…. Tell me more….!

"Then, Nelson started attacking us, creating clones of himself, only for them to be torn apart by a Shadow Garden member named Delta, a beastkin who's still strong even with the Sanctuary draining our magic like during the terrorist incident. I almost pity the baldy. Then the baldy summoned Olivier to fight for him. But at that time, Shadow Garden already collected everything they wanted from the Sanctuary and they retreated. We all escaped from the Sanctuary and… we watched a huge explosion outside the city behind the Lindwurm Cathedral… which is undoubtedly Shadow's work."

"I see…"

"You look calm for someone who just heard the revelation of your lifetime."

"Maybe I'm not as calm as I look, Princess."

"Whatever. All I want to say is that I want you as part of my alliance."

"Alliance?" This is an interesting development.

"I… I don't want to remain in the dark while so many things happen in the shadows. I don't want to be ignorant and helpless as a secret war is being waged in this kingdom. I want to know… I want to defend the kingdom and… everything that is precious to me!" She declared while clenching her fist. Wow. To think that you'll grow from a damsel in distress into a main character like that, Alexia. How interesting.

"That's why, Claude! I want you to join my alliance!"

"Why me?"

"You've got a bone to pick with Necromancer, don't you? You want to protect your sister, don't you?"

"… Yes."

"That's why I think you can be trusted and are reliable."

"What about your sister and the Crimson Order?"

"I trust my sister but… I can't help but feel like… she is growing more and more distant from me. And I wasn't the one staying away from her this time… It's been like that since we all witnessed the battle between Shadow and Necromancer. Still, I told her everything to her and my father. My father told us not to spread this information to the public as it would shake the very foundations of the world. With the Cult being as big as it is and even have influence in the Church, we need to be careful so you need to shut up about this too!"

"I can understand that." The king is wiser than I thought.

"So? What's your answer?"

"I'm in. I also don't want to be left behind."

"Good. Now that I've shared to you what I know, do you have new information on your end?" She asked… What information should I reveal? Hmm…

"You say there was an explosion."

"Yes. What of it?"

"The explosion likely occurred inside the Sanctuary and… Nelson stayed inside before you left, right?"

"Yes… He's probably dead by now."

"What if… Necromancer was promoted in his place?"

"That seems plausible but… Zenon was aiming for a seat in the Rounds too… which means there was vacancy long before then and…" She contemplated.

"But with the Cult losing more and more people, some of which are probably candidate for the Rounds like Zenon… and now even an actual member of the Rounds perished…" I clarified.

"Then we should assume that Necromancer has been promoted to the position of Rounds… or at least the closest one there right now." She concluded.

"Indeed."

"But why would he need to do that? As an ancient evil who survived since ancient times, he wouldn't need the Tears."

"Perhaps… he's just using the Cult for his own ends."

"What kind of end?"

"I don't know. Perhaps to use them against his enemy, Shadow. You did say that he fought Shadow's past incarnation, right?"

"That makes sense… Which means he's far more dangerous than the Cult." Heh heh heh. This is the development I wanted. Yes. Fear me. Fear my name. Think of me as a greater threat than the Cult.

"Anyway… This has been insightful. You're more useful than I thought, Claude."

"Thanks."

"Anyway, I'll keep in touch if we got more informations."

"Can I ask who else you've invited to this alliance?"

"So far I've invited Princess Rose Oriana and Natsume Kafka."

"Natsume? Why her?"

"She has better information network than I thought. Even if she's far more infuriating than you, it'll be foolish to not use it." I see even Alexia rated her highly. This Natsume… Definitely a reincarnator like me and Shadow.

"I look forward to meeting her then."

"Hmph. You're not interested in that slut, are you?" She scowled.

"W-Why would you think that?" I asked while taking a sip of my tea.

"Heh. I overheard your maids whispering about how you loved staring at their assets. You're a pervert, aren't you?" She said with a mocking smile.

"Cough!?" I almost choked.

"Speaking of which… I recall Alpha calling Necromancer a pervert as well. It seems you and your enemy has something in common."

AAAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!

I screamed internally. To think it was Shadow Garden who took the glasses!!! To be fair, I couldn't think of any group that is strong enough to clear my dungeons other than them. I had hoped that it wasn't them… So embarrassing!!!

Chapter 33: Mundane Mann
Chapter 33: Mundane Mann

Summer starts, and with it, the Bushin Festival is about to begin. Many warriors from around the world gathered in Midgar Royal Capital to prove their worth. I, as the famed prodigy of Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy and a member of Iris' Crimson Order, was granted a slot to represent the academy in the Bushin Festival. The victor of the academy's premilinary rounds, Rose Oriana, also have a slot. Her father, King Raphael Oriana, will come to watch, accompanied by Duke… Ahem…. Perv Asshat… Cough cough… Seriously who named these people!?

P-Perv Asshat was my rival in the Cult aiming for the 12th Seat. He is Mordred's pawn, a better politician than a fighter. He has poisoned King Raphael with some thought inhibition drug to turn him into an obedient puppet (a lame way to control someone in my opinion) and they are looking to use Rose Oriana as well for some scheme to take over the Kingdom of Oriana. I will watch what fate has in store for the poor princess.

To attend the Bushin Festival, I was finally allowed to leave Everick and returned to the capital city. I wanted to spread some chaos in the Bushin Festival but senseless attacks without a plan or objective in mind is not my style. Especially since P-Perv Asshat… cough… seems to have a plan of his own and I need to watch and admire as it unfolds. For now I'll just participate as Claude Normann.

Sherry stayed in Everick to continue her magic training before resuming her studies in Laugus after summer vacation is over but I occasionally teleported back to Everick in order to train her.

I met up with the rest of Alexia's allies, Rose and Natsume, in McRonald and we chatted for a bit. I definitely didn't stare at Natsume's boobies and definitely didn't get hit by Alexia in the head for it! Definitely not! I-I did stare at Rose's chest though… and not for the reason you're thinking! I noticed the Demonic Possession that's currently growing on her chest but I decided to say nothing. This is a trial that she must overcome as it is definitely her character arc now.

"Tee hee hee. You two are so close. I'm so envious!" Rose remarked while smiling after seeing Alexia DID NOT hit me in the head.

""No, we're not!"" We replied in perfect sync.

"Wow. It's like you two are meant for each other." Natsume added while grinning.

""I'm telling you!! It's not like that!! And you! Stop copying me!!"" We both exclaimed in perfect unison again.

Alexia told them our theory that the Necromancer has likely been promoted into the Rounds and Natsume, through her mysterious source, confirmed that was the case. How curious. A mere writer having access to such classified information.

We parted ways afterwards.

Now I am walking around the streets in my Crimson Order uniform to observe the warriors gathering around for the Bushin Festival, to see if there are any interesting characters. I saw Annerose, a former member of the Seven Blades of Velgalta, walking around. She had a scuffle with Sergey Gorman years ago after she succeeded Karen von Herzog. I heard she managed to kill him. She's a talented swordswoman from what I heard and she quit her position to go on a training journey.

I see Quinton, a frequent participant of the Bushin Festival. He's currently bullying a weakling.

Quinton punched the weakling and he fell to the ground. Oh well. I need to break this commotion as a member of the Crimson Order.

"Alright, you guys. Stop that. Show's over. You guys should move on." I intercepted before Quinton starts punching him again, trying to disperse the crowd as well.

"Huh? Who do you think you are, punk?" Quinton threatened, not recognizing my uniform.

"If you want a fight, then you should wait until--"

"Bah! I was being kind to this scrub! I was teaching him the cruel reality of the world so he would give up and leave before he humiliates himself!"

"And I said stop."

"And I asked who do you think you are!" He glared at me.

I punched him in the nose for that. "Owww!! Now you've done it!" He raised his fist but I was faster and punched him in the face again. "Uooghhh…!!"

"Whoever I am, doesn't matter. Now, scram!"

"Tch! Fine. I don't want any trouble with this country's knights anyway." So he finally noticed my knightly uniform. He left afterwards with his goons.

Annerose gave some advice to the weakling but he stood up without much injury despite taking a direct punch to the face. I was… flabbergasted when I saw his face.

"It's been a while since I tasted blood." The weakling muttered lazily before walking away.

"Wait!" Annerose called out to him and he stopped.

"My name is Annerose Nichtsehen. What's yours?"

"Mundane… Mundane Mann." He answered before continuing on his way.

That name… that face… No mistake… This is going to be interesting.

"What do you think of him, Mr. Normann?" Annerose asked me, recognizing who I am unlike that Quinton.

"He's… certainly not what he seems to be. Interesting."

"So you see it too."

"Indeed. I believe this is the first time we met, Miss Nichtsehen?"

"Annerose is fine."

"Then you can call me Claude. I look forward to meeting you in the Bushin Festival." I held out my hand.

"So you're participating as well. Stories of your prodigious talent with the sword have reached even Velgalta. I also look forward to clashing blades with you." She replied while shaking my hand.

We parted ways after that. Still Nichtsehen, huh? This is the first time I heard German being used as a name in this world. Kinda funny though. Is she as blind as her name implies?

The reaction of the ikemen Claude and that Annerose is perfect! Now they are definitely interested in Mundane Mann! Who is this mysterious man? Where did he come from? How strong is he? They must be asking those questions right now! As I thought. The Bushin Festival is the best stage for a Shadowbroker like me! I wonder if the Necromancer will show up again. Maybe as a fellow Shadowbroker he would participate under an alter ego as well? I'm so excited to see it!

I ignored my mob friend Skel who's trying to scam me into giving him gambling money and left him in McRonald carrying a bag of burgers. On the way to my apartment I met Rose. She told me that she's been meeting with Alexia, Beta and Claude recently and she comments that Alexia and Beta often had quarrels and that Claude and Alexia have such close relationship that she got jealous when Claude looked at another woman. Heeeh? So she liked him that much? Then why did she bother with me though?

"They look so close that… I'm almost envious."

"Is that so?"

"I may present myself as a strong leader at school but I'm still a girl… I too want some fairy tale like romance like in Natsume's books. Is that too childish of me, Cid?"

"Nah. You do you, Rose."

"I've done many childish things and disappointed many people. I'm a princess of a kingdom that looks down on swordsmanship. I chose the path of the sword despite objections from everyone in Oriana. I wanted to once again… witness that beautiful swordsmanship from that night… I longed to reach his level and… above all… I want happiness."

"I see."

"Even if… as a princess… I've been betrothed to a man I barely know… and have no feelings for… I want happiness. I envy Alexia because she gets along with Claude… who will likely be betrothed to her. I want… something like that too. But… I…" Alright. I've heard enough.

"So you're just gonna give up on your dream, then?"

"Huh?"

"Rose-senpai. If you have a dream, then you must seize it with your own hands, no matter what."

"Senpai?"

"I'm the same, you know. I have a dream that I must achieve no matter what people around me say. Even if it's childish, foolish or even impossible, I never gave up. And you shouldn't too. Or you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

"Cid…" She regained some smile after my speech.

"May I ask… what your dream is?" She asked.

"It's a secret. All I can say is that I won't give up on it no matter what. That's why I did everything I did. For that dream, I would even give up my life." I answered while trying to be mysterious. Can't exactly tell her I wanna be an Eminence in Shadow after all. Though I did died once to reach this dream of mine.

"Huh…? So… you… tried to save me… back in the classroom because…?" She's muttering something incoherently while covering her mouth with both hands and looking like she's holding back her tears.

"I see. Thank you Cid." She smiled as she pulled me into a hug. Huh?

"You never cease to amaze me with your unwavering courage and determination. You've given me purpose. From now on, I may… have to walk through a hard and dangerous path. No matter what I choose… will you still believe in me?"

"Sure. I will."

"Thank you, Cid." She let go of me with a smile. Before she left though,

"Here!" I gave her one of the burgers I have in my bag.

"You must be hungry. A warrior can't fight with an empty stomach after all. Good luck on your endeavours."

She accepted the burger with an… uneasy smile. "Thank you, Cid. Goodbye." With that she left.

Author's Note:

And so Rose fell in love with Cid and thought Cid loved her like in canon, but at the same time she felt so many regrets because at this time she's already suffering from Possession. Cid rizzed her by being genuine and spoke not as a mob Cid Kagenou but as the Real Cid. I hope I conveyed her emotions well enough.

Chapter 34: My Power Level is…
Chapter 34: My Power Level is…

I was once again in a meeting with Alexia's team. Though one member is missing and the reason we gathered was because of her. We are on a private VIP room of a restaurant and on the table is a newspaper with Rose's face printed on the front page.

"I can't believe she's done this." Alexia muttered.

"Perhaps she didn't want to be betrothed with this Duke… P-Perv Asshat. But still, her reaction is a bit extreme." I said, still struggling whenever I have to say that ridiculous name.

"I think extreme is not strong enough word to describe stabbing your fiancé." Alexia said.

"She was last seen heading north before they lost track of her. I doubt she has left the capital by now. Oriana's diplomats wanted to settle this as an internal affair and requested Midgar not to interfere, didn't they?" Natsume said.

"Indeed. That was suspicious." Alexia said.

"Rose is an exchange student, not a diplomat, and thus we should have a right to interfere with what happened in our land in accordance with Midgar's laws but that may worsen Midgar's relation with Oriana." I added.

"Well. My father wants to observe the situation first. He's always been a bit passive. But as her friend we can't be as passive. We must find her first so we can question and help her." Alexia declared.

"But she didn't tell us anything before this happened. There's a chance that she didn't want us to interfere out of fear that it may worsen relations between kingdoms." Natsume interjected.

"I know. And that's why I'm pissed off right now. Aren't we friends? Why didn't she tell us?" Alexia complained.

"I agree with Natsume. It'll be disastrous if we, especially you, Alexia, are found meddling in foreign affairs." I said in agreement.

"Claude! I can't believe someone like you would say something like that! Foreign affairs!? This entire thing happened within our soil!" Alexia exclaimed angrily.

"That's why we should be discreet when we search for her. Here." I unveiled three black robes from my bag.

"C-Claude. That's…?" Alexia asked.

"The same kind of robes worn by the terrorists who attacked our school. We need to hide our identities when we search for her so we don't have to cause any problems to the kingdom."

"Claude. You're a genius!" Well, that's rare, a compliment from Alexia of all people.

"I get that a lot." I replied smugly.

"Don't get that over your head though, pervert."

"You're never gonna let me live that down, huh?" I said with an uneasy smile.

"Of course. Heh." She replied smugly. Damn she always got me.

"Haahh… I'll gather more information so we can get a lead. I'll also investigate the dark rumors surrounding Perv Asshat." Natsume said.

"Please do." I said.

As Mr. Claude and that bitch left the restaurant, an agent of Shadow Garden entered the room with reports.

"Lady Beta. Is it okay to let them investigate?" She asked.

"Haaah... I cannot stop them. Not when Mr. Claude is so smart that he already countered my attempts to persuade them into leaving this matter be."

"What should we do?"

"Let us leak more information about Perv Asshat. That should distract his faction in order to give Rose some breathing room while they try to cover things up."

"Very well."

"How's Rose?"

"She has entered the underground maze underneath the capital city through the sewers."

"I see. That's an ideal place to hide from Perv's agents after all. Continue to keep watch over her." I ordered as I opened the folder containing the latest report from our agents and read it.

"She was holding her chest as if in pain while she ran…" I recalled that Mr. Claude stared at her chest during our first meeting… and not in a perverted manner… I didn't think much about it back then but… could it be…!?

"Summon Nu and have her monitor Mr. Claude!"

"Lady Beta?"

"And send reinforcements to aid Rose in repelling her pursuers but don't contact her yet!"

"Y-Yes! At once!" She said as she's about to leave the room.

"I'm not finished!" I stopped her as I wrote an encrypted message on a piece of paper.

"And give this to Epsilon!"

"Yes, Lady Beta!"

Mr. Claude. You continue to surprise us. To think that you noticed that Rose was suffering from Possession before we did.

I returned to my apartment room that night. My old dorm near the school has been destroyed along with the school during the whole Lutheran incident so I have to rent another apartment. A black robed man with a pale face waiting for me there.

"Master. You called?" The pale man asked.

"Yes. Did you watch how Mundane Mann fights?"

"Yes. He was fast. Very fast. But so far he hasn't shown his true strength."

"Continue to observe him. Learn how he fights. And also, take these." I summoned a chest containing weapons and armor.

"Wear these and be ready to confront him at my command."

"Yes, master." He said as he disappeared from the room with the chest.

I defeated some randos in my first rounds of the tournament easily. I was also able to watch how Mundane Mann defeats his opponents. He's indeed as fast as my minion claimed. Most people thought he paid his opponents to let him win because they can't see how fast he beat his opponents. He even defeated that bald headed Quinton without breaking a sweat.

Today, I faced Goldy Gilded, a smug blonde man wearing a sparkling golden armor. He usually forfeited any fight he cannot win but it seems he doesn't know me enough that he dared to face me. Well, I did hide my magic output and perhaps he's unaware of my reputation because I didn't participate in tournaments as much as someone like me should. Being an executive of a shady organization ain't easy after all. We now stand face to face in the arena.

"Hmph. I applaud your courage to stand before me, boy. But know that now you face me, Goldy Gilded the Victorious Golden Dragon! It's not a shame to forfeit this match, you know? You, boy, whose Battle Power is merely 50! I suggest you retreat! For my Battle Power is 4330!" Ho? A scouter reference? I have a great idea.

"Is that so?" I said as I unleashed some of my magic power, startling him as he felt… saw my magic power rising.

"Wh-What…? How…!? Your Battle Power… It's over 9000!?"

Pfft….. Musn't laugh. Not now. I must stay cool and deliver… no, steal a certain galactic emperor's line.

"Since you've told me yours I shall warn you in the interest of fairness. You see, sir. My Power Level is 530000. Rest assured that I have no plan to engage you with my full strength." I said with a sinister smile, channelling my inner Frieza-sama.

"530000!?" He exclaimed, thinking of retreating. But it is too late.

"Battle start!" As the referee already announced the battle to start.

"Tch! Whatever!" Shouted Goldy as he charged forth with his sword raised, ready for an overhead slash. I dodged it effortlessly.

"Wha…!?" He exclaimed as he retreated.

"Is that all you've got?" I taunted.

"Kuh…! I admit! You're strong! And so I shall show you my true power! HAAAAAAA!!!!" He began shouting as his body began glowing. Golden aura envelops him.

"Can't be… Is that...?" I muttered with a surprised face.

"Heh. Scared? But it's too late for you to run now! Hyaaaaaaa!!!!" Oh my. He has become a Super Saiyajin. His golden aura even formed a dragon and he started charging towards me.

I didn't even unsheathe my sword and just punched him in the face. The golden aura dispersed immediately as he was blown away.

"UOOGHH…!!"

He crashed to the ground, making a circular dent on it while laying in a perfect Yamcha death pose. Perfect. As perfect as Cell.

"Winner, Claude Normann!!"

I walked triumphantly back to my seat. Though I noticed my stalker from Shadow Garden has returned, once again watching over me. Why is she here again? Ughh… I hope she's stalking me for official Shadow Garden business and not… any yandere stuff. Even I don't wanna deal with that stuff.

Then I took a look at the tournament bracket to see my next opponents and…

"Hm? This name… So she's here…"

The next day wanted posters of Rose Oriana was spread across the capital. Someone leaked some nasty rumors about P-Perv's crimes back in Oriana and it made him desperate enough to put 10 Million Zeni price to get her back alive. This move didn't help his rumors and he's been busy trying to cover them up while beheading some Oriana nobles he thought were responsible for spreading rumors about him.

Today I was scheduled to attend the pianist Silon's Moonlight Sonata performance with my sister, who is also in the capital, but the Rose case was more important so I ditched her. Silon was most likely a reincarnator as well considering she brought many classical songs from Earth to this world. I'll pay her a visit later. She can wait. Rose however, especially at her current condition, cannot.

I, along with Alexia and Natsume, wore the black robes I provided and we sneaked together to the underground passageways to search for Rose, with Alexia leading the way holding the lantern.

"Do you know the way?" I asked Alexia.

"Not really. Won't stop me from trying though."

"The ancient labyrinth's maps have been lost so I hope you know what you're doing or we could get lost."

"I know. We can just retrace our steps to get back." Alexia said.

As we passed through the tunnels, I began to notice some things… familiar things… on the walls… Oh right. I almost forgot I did this.

"What's wrong, Mr. Claude?" Natsume asked.

"Oh… Look at these." I pointed at the runes and magic circles carved on the walls.

"Those runes… do you know them, Natsume?" Alexia asked.

"Sadly I'm unfamiliar with them. But…" Natsume replied uneasily.

"These runes… belong to the Necromancer." I answered.

"What!? How did you know!?" Alexia questioned.

"He used to leave runes like these along with magic circles with pentagrams which were written with blood on the crime scenes back when he was a serial killer." I explained.

"Then… He was here too!? Aghh…! Why is he always involved everywhere!?" Complained Alexia. I dunno, man. Maybe it's because I loved leaving things for people to discover?

Anyway, I did visit this underground maze underneath the capital years ago and since it was the perfect place, I turned it into a dungeon. If we delve deeper, I'm sure we'll soon find my undead minions. How exciting. To think that our search for Rose would turn into a dungeon crawling. Heh heh heh.

"Mr. Claude. Princess Alexia. This is getting to dangerous. I suggest we retreat and--" Natsume was about to suggest we retreat before being cut by Alexia.

"No! This is all the more reason we can't leave Rose alone! Let's go!" Exclaimed Alexia as she recklessly charged in deeper and deeper into the maze. Me and Natsume sighed before chasing after her.

When I think of how to do the Goldy scene, I knew I had to sneak some DBZ reference.

Chapter 35: A Sonata in the Dungeon
Chapter 35: A Sonata in the Dungeon

"Haahhhh…. Hahhh… Hahhh…." I walked while breathing heavily. My body grows weaker and weaker from lack of nutrition, wounds and the Possession slowly consuming me. How long has it been? I can't tell after spending so much time in darkness.

Did I make the right choice back then? I can't stop myself from attacking Perv after seeing my father's condition and Perv's evil smirk. To think that all the aristocrats and guards present immediately called me crazy after I did that… And he even threatened to have my father assassinate Midgar aristocrats or even the king of Midgar himself if I don't surrender myself to him. He's insane… That would trigger a war! And… why me…?

"Ughh…" I fell to the floor… struggling to stand up, I end up leaning against the wall of the tunnel. Behind me are corpses… not the corpses of my pursuers but corpses of people who are long dead… who are supposed to be long since dead. The undead minions of Necromancer.

If Cid hadn't discovered their weakness back then… I wouldn't be able to defeat that much of them on my own. But I suppose it didn't matter now…

"Cid…" I took the burger wrapper out of my pocket… the burger that he gave me… It was delicious. And the words of encouragement he gave me….

"Oh… Cid… Why did I have to fall in love with you now… when I know I no longer have any future…? I'm sorry Cid… At this rate… I won't be able to… reciprocate your love…" I muttered with tears running down my cheeks.

I'm sorry… father…

*Tap tap tap*

The sound of approaching footsteps…. Who is it…? I asked as my consciousness fades away.

I made a huge mistake. I should've done more research before allowing them to enter this wicked place. Mr. Claude and the bi—Alexia are competent fighters but Necromancer's undead minions are stronger the deeper we went into the tombs! They will be worn out and I couldn't assist them without revealing my true identity!

"Hyaaaahh!!" Shouted Alexia as she decapitated a skeleton soldier.

"Hm!!" Shouted Mr. Claude as he decapitated three zombies with one swing.

"Is there no end of them!?" Shouted Alexia.

"Princess Alexia! Watch your steps!" I shouted as she stepped into a pressure plate that triggered a trap.

"Oopsie?" She said. And she had the gall to be cute at a time like this! Agh!

A huge boulder appeared on the other side of the tunnel crushing the undead and heading straight to us.

"Ruuuun!!!" I shouted while panicking. All three of us ran as fast as we can… well they ran as fast as they can while I have to match my pace with them. Eventually we evaded the boulder by running through a branching path in the hallway. And the bitch almost fell down a hole with spikes on the bottom. Luckily for her, Mr. Claude was there to save her by dragging her back before she plunged herself down the hole while running.

"Ahhhh!!! Why are there so many traps too!?" She complained.

"That's why I said this is such a bad idea!" I complained too.

"We need to keep moving. If we, who are perfectly healthy, were having trouble, Rose would have more trouble considering she probably hasn't eaten in days!" Exclaimed Mr. Claude, clearly worried about Rose, especially since he knew she was afflicted with Possession.

"Ughh… You're right. Let's keep going." Alexia said as we went back to the path that the boulder passed through in order to proceed further. At least it's not gonna get harder now that the reinforcements are here.

"Who's there!?" Mr. Claude shouted to the dark and 3 cloaked figures emerged.

"Fear not. We are Shadow Garden." One of the Numbers said.

"Shadow Garden. Why are you here?" Alexia asked distrustfully.

"We are here to escort you out. You're not meant to be here."

"I refuse! My friend is still in there somewhere! She needs our help!" Alexia shouted.

"Fear not. Lord Shadow has made his move."

Lord Shadow!? So he foresaw all this mess and decided to move. As expected of our lord.

"Graaahhhh….!!!" We heard more growls of the zombies from the direction we came from. A horde of them approaching. This is probably a bit much even for the Numbers.

"Looks like we need to keep moving." Alexia muttered.

"Agreed." Mr. Claude said. This is such a disaster. But babysitting is work too, Beta.

I regained consciousness to the sound of piano… It's a miracle that I'm still alive. But who… where…?

As I opened my eyes, I saw the interior of an old underground Cathedral and… a figure clad in black playing the most beautiful rendition of the Moonlight Sonata I've ever heard on a grand piano at the center of the Cathedral. The Cathedral was illuminated by blue lights coming from the stained glass windows resembling moonlight and white feathers fly around the room, creating a beautiful atmosphere.

I stood up, ignoring the pain and fatigue to listen to the man… Shadow… as he played the piano skilfully, perhaps more skilful than Lady Silon did. Ahh… It's so beautiful.

Eventually he finished the song and bowed before the audience, namely me.

I clapped, fully in awe of his performance.

"That was… the most beautiful rendition of Moonlight Sonata I've ever heard."

"Now… What are you going to do?" He asked and I stop clapping.

"I… I wish to protect everyone… and to achieve happiness. But…"

"Is it over then? Is your fight over?" He asked again.

"No! I don't want it to end! I wanted a better future! But I have no power!"

"If it's power you want…" He raised his hand to eye level and a purple flame ignited on his palm.

"I can give it to you."

I gave Rose-senpai a portion of my magic and cured her Possession symptom while I'm at it. My magic also rejuvenates her body and healed her wounds. Now she can fight the horde of undead on her own so I left her. I hope you can achieve your dreams.

But anyway, that was hella dope! It was worth it to steal that piano and bringing it down here. The undead and traps were annoying. They almost damaged my piano so I had to ward them off with my slimes. But it was worth it. Rose-senpai was from a kingdom of arts so she definitely appreciated my performance. The atmosphere and lighting… my favourite song, Moonlight Sonata… It was perfection.

On my way out I met Epsilon.

"Lord Shadow!"

"Epsilon."

"What happened? Was I too late?"

"It is done. Don't worry about it."

"I see. I was called by Beta in order to cure Princess Rose's Possession but it seems you beat me to it. As expected of Lord Shadow!" She said with a smile.

"So what now, my lord?"

"Her battle starts here. Your task now is to explore this labyrinth and find anything valuable." I hope there's anything worthwhile down here. But if I see another Mimic I'm so gonna punch that Necromancer in the face again.

"Very well, my lord!" Epsilon said as she left.

Now then. There seems to be some commotion around this direction.

Well. It's been fun watching the reactions of Alexia, Natsume and the Shadow Garden members to this labyrinth which has become my dungeon. But the true fun starts now. We are approaching the boss room instead of going out thanks to the traps being deliberately designed to force intruders to go deeper, one of which was the boulder trap from earlier. How many will die today? I can't wait.

The Shadow Garden members are more competent than I thought. They looked like they are experienced in fighting my undead minions. I also noticed how much hatred they have for my undead servants. How much emotion they showed when they decapitate every zombie and skeletons. Oh this is so precious.

We eventually entered the boss room, which is a throne room filled with many human skeletons with a robed skeletal figure sitting on the throne. A Lich.

"N-Necromancer!?" Alexia exclaimed.

"No. That's just another one of his undead minions. Though from its attire it looks like it fights the same way as Necromancer." Natsume said and as if to confirm her theory, the Lich stood up and brandishes his staff and starts raising the skeletons surrounding the room and send them to attack us.

"Incoming!!" Shouted one of the Shadow Garden members as they brandished their slime swords to fight back against the incoming horde of skeletons.

The fight was going well, until the Lich starts casting lightning bolts towards them.

"Hyaaahhh!!!" Screamed one of them who were hit by the lightning.

"626!!!" Shouted her comrade.

"I'm okay!" The injured Shadow Garden member said as she stood back up. Hm. She's pretty durable. And… her wounds heal on their own? Impressive. She has long silver hair and is carrying a dagger on her hips. A side weapon perhaps? Also, where have I seen her before? Pretty sure I saw her in one of the dossier of Compatibles and pretty sure she was some guy's daughter.

"Claude! We have to help them!" Alexia exclaimed.

"Agreed! Hyaaah!!" I shouted as I charged in together with Alexia to fight the skeletons.

"Willkommen." Welcome. The Lich said.

Author's Note:

The number 626 was taken from Lilo and Stitch, 626 being Stitch's number.

Chapter 36: The German Lich
Chapter 36: The German Lich

"Es gibt keine Hoffnung für euch."
There is no hope for you. The Lich said in German. I made him speak foreign language in order to make him sound cool. I wasn't able to turn him into a DnD Lich by creating a Phylactery for him though so he's similar to my other undead minions with the exception of a more advanced artificial intelligence and given the ability to cast spells.

"What!?" Alexia muttered while locking blades with a skeleton.

"Nur Tod!" Only Death! The Lich said as he fired a bunch of fireballs at us, which we dodged. The fireballs hit his own skeletons but it doesn't matter because these skeletons have a twist.

"Hier seid ihr! In den Tiefen der Verzweiflung! Gebt euren Seelen auf!" Here you are! In the depths of despair! Surrender your souls! The Lich said again.

"Anyone knows what he's saying!?" Alexia asked. I do but I won't tell you. It's part of the fun.

The Lich snapped his bony fingers and the skeletons he destroyed with fireballs and the ones we decapitated reassembled themselves and start attacking us again.

"What!? Is there no end to these things!?" Exclaimed the Shadow Garden member called 626.

"Verzweifelt!!" Despair!! The Lich shouted as he cast another round of fireballs at us. 626 tanked the blast to protect her comrades who could not dodge in time.

"626!!!" Her comrades shouted.

"I'm okay!" Said 626 as she healed the burns.

"Kill them faster and start attacking the robed one!" I shouted, which caused them to fight harder to get closer to the Lich.

"Es ist nutzlos!!" It's useless!! The Lich shouted as he cast lightning towards the one closest to him, namely me. I programmed the undead minions to attack me too if I didn't wear the Necromancer disguise after all.

"Aghhhh!!!" I took the lightning bolt, allowing myself to be hurt before blocking a sword strike from a skeleton with trembling hands.

"Mr. Claude!!" Shouted Natsume worriedly.

"I'm okay! Just keep pushing!" I shouted while struggling against the skeletons attacking me. Well, I did actually allow myself to be hurt for real so I really did struggle. Getting a lightning strike makes my body feel slightly paralyzed it's making it quite difficult to maintain my grip on my sword. I really need more pain tolerance.

"Geht sterben!!" Go die!! The Lich shouted as he created several ice spears and threw them at us.

"Hyaaahhh!!" I mustered my strength to destroy the spear heading for Alexia with a slash while the Shadow Garden members dodged theirs.

"Warum müsst ihr kämpfen? Es ist nutzlos! Alles ist nutzlos!" Why must you fight? It's useless! Everything is useless! The Lich shouted again as he prepared to send more ice spears at us but this time, one of the Shadow Garden members reached him and gave him a slash.

"AAARGHHH!!!" AAARGHHH!!! He screamed (I didn't really need to translate that, did I?) and blasted her away with a fireball, which at point blank range ended up hurting him too.

We all took this opportunity to approach him and start delivering a joint attack from 4 directions.

"Barriere!!!" Barrier!!! He shouted, covering himself with a barrier that blocked all our attacks.

"Weg!!" Away!! He shouted as he generates a shockwave that blew us all away. Then he snaps his fingers and reassembled the skeletons we defeated once again, which surrounds us again.

"Dammit! Now we're back to square one!" Shouted Alexia.

As we braced ourselves for another round, a reinforcement appeared in the form of a man clad in black, my fated enemy, who decapitated all the skeletons with a single slash.

"Abscheuliche Untote. Kehr zu deinem Grab zurück!" Vile undead. Return to your grave! Shadow said in German.

"Lord Shadow!!" The three Shadow Garden members shouted in unison. And I could've sworn I saw Natsume's eyes sparkle when she saw Shadow. So she's a fan of him.

"You guys should retreat." Shadow ordered after he healed the girl who was hit by the fireball earlier.

"Yes!" Exclaimed the three Shadow Garden members before dragging me, Natsume and Alexia out of the boss room.

"Wer bist du!? Wie hast du das gemacht!?" Who are you!? How did you do that!? I heard the Lich questioning him.

"Ich bin Shadow, er, der in den Shatten lauert und die Shatten jagt." I am Shadow, he who lurks in the shadows and hunt the shadows. Shadow replied. He even spoke his catchphrase in German. Holy hell that's cool!

"Ich verstehe. Du bist der Feind meines Herrn." I see. You are my lord's enemy. The Lich said.

"Dann wirst du hier sterben!!" Then you shall die here!! The Lich shouted before casting his spells. And that's the last I could hear before I caught up with the others.

"What took you so long, Claude!? Let's go!" Alexia shouted before we were surrounded by more undead horde.

"Tch! More of them! I'm getting sick of this place!" Alexia shouted.

"Well, you're the one who brought us here!" I shouted back at her.

"Shut it!" She replied as we fought the horde of undead whilst being tired and injured. All seems lost until we got another unexpected help in the form of Rose Oriana, the very person we were trying to save.

"Rose!?" Exclaimed Alexia as she saw Rose decapitating a few undead with a single slash.

"What happened to you!?" Alexia asked, bewildered by how powerful Rose is despite supposedly being malnourished.

"Long story! But unfortunately we have no time for it!" Rose said.

"Of course! You owe us an explanation after this is over!" Alexia exclaimed.

"No. I cannot involve you any further! My burden is my own!" Rose replied.

Alexia turned her blade against Rose, which she blocked. "What nonsense are you saying!? We promised that we all won't be mere spectators anymore! We promised to protect and help each other! We are friends, are we not!?" Alexia shouted with anger. The Shadow Garden members looked on bewildered.

"Keep fighting!" I shouted at the Shadow Garden members and we continue fighting against the hordes while Alexia and Rose locked their blades.

"Why are you saying such things!? Am I just a spectator to you!?" Alexia shouted again.

"I'm sorry. I can't go back anymore."

"Answer me!"

"I envy you, you know. You will have a happy life with the one you loved. While I… have to keep fighting."

"Then let us help you!" Alexia shouted desperately.

"I'm sorry." Rose apologized before pushing Alexia away and starts defeating the rest of the undead with an amazing display of skill and strength which surprised us all.

Beautiful. Slash after slash, thrust after thrust, the undead kept falling down every time she moves. Her main character aura is shining. This is truly her character arc. I look forward to see how it will end. Heh heh heh.

"Why…?" Alexia said as she fell to her knees exhausted. Rose didn't reply as she left on her own.

"Let's go." I said.

"Why…?" Alexia muttered as I picked her in a princess carry and left the dungeon with Natsume and the Shadow Garden members.

"Es tut mir leid, mein Herr… Ich habe Sie enttäuscht…!" I'm sorry, my lord… I have failed/disappointed you…! We heard the Lich's voice echoing throughout the halls as he was defeated by Shadow while we are running towards the exit.

I carried Alexia all the way to my apartment discretely because we can't let ourselves be seen in our current state so I can't bring her back to the castle yet. I sat her down the sofa on my room.

"Hey. Why did she do that?" Alexia asked.

"She was determined to finish her problems on her own." I replied.

"What does that mean!?" She shouted as she tugged my shirt's collar.

"It means she's going to resort to something extreme and didn't want us to get involved in it." I relied calmly.

"Something extreme?"

"Like assassinating her fiancé, Perv Asshat."

"Then…!!"

"Then she may appear in the Bushin Festival. Not to fight of course but to attack him. You know her father's condition, don't you?"

"Yes. Iris said he behaved like a hollow shell, even though his daughter is being hunted right now."

"He's likely been drugged."

"Then we should--"

"Accuse Perv Asshat publicly? They will simply deny it and use your accusations against you. Not to mention he's holding the king hostage right now. If you made a move, he may get desperate."

"Tch! I hate this…!" She stated while releasing her grip on my collar.

"Me too."

"What can we do, Claude?"

"For now, we can only wait for her to come."

"Hahhh… I don't like it but… I suppose we have no other choice."

Good. You shall be there to watch as Rose takes the stage towards her destiny.

"By the way. How's Sherry? I heard she's staying in Everick right now although I didn't see her last time I visited." Alexia asked.

"She's doing just fine." I answered.

"Take care of her. I fear that… she's going through something similar to Rose… and didn't want to involve us."

"…." I didn't reply because I am heavily involved.

After she took a bath, changed her clothes (I bought her a change of clothes at Mitsugoshi) and treat her wounds, she left my apartment to go back to the castle to rest. An hour later the pale man returns.

"Master. Gilfried received a message from Duke Perv Asshat, requesting to meet you tonight."

"I see. Must be about Rose. Very well. I'll meet him."

Time to meet with Duke P-Perv Asshat. Pfft… What a name.
"In the meantime, I want you to do something for Mundane Mann tomorrow." I ordered the pale man.

"It's good to finally meet you, Lord Necromancer." Duke Perv Asshat greets me in a luxurious room in his villa. King Raphael Oriana, his puppet, is sitting on a chair beside him with a pale face and blank expression and filled with thick smell of perfumes.

"Likewise, Perv. So tell me. Why have you invited me here?" Mustn't laugh. Mustn't laugh.

"Ahh… I see you're the straight to the point type. Very well. I wanted to request your assistance regarding Rose Oriana. My agents saw her entering the underground passageways where they found your undead servants and thus was unable to proceed with her capture. I wish for safe passage for my agents to--"

"No need. She has escaped the underground." I cut him off.

"Truly!? Then where is she?" Perv asked, almost standing up from his chair.

"No need to worry. She will come to you. You have her father hostage after all." I looked at the direction of the king.

"Speaking of which, I believe your method of brainwashing him is too sloppy. Midgar's royalty already suspects you drugging him based on how brazenly you displayed this pathetic state."

"I-I apologize. This is all we can do for now."

"Let me show you how I would do it." I stared at the king in the eyes and commanded him with hypnosis, which is easy despite him not trusting me considering his mind is currently broken by the drugs. No resistance from his mind at all.

"HYA HA HA HA HA!!!" The king, previously a hollow shell, now stood up and laughed like a madman.

"Wh-What!?" Perv muttered confusedly.

"My daughter…. My darling daughter! You will return to me! And you will serve the Cult as I have! Ha ha ha ha ha!!" He laughed again before returning to his previous hollowed state.

"A-Amazing! As expected of you, Lord Necromancer!" Perv exclaimed.

"You still need to let him rest for a day to fix his pale complexion. We'll let him appear in public the day after tomorrow, in the day of the semifinals of the Bushin Festival." I said.

"Agreed. I thank you for your assistance, Lord Necromancer! Also…"

"What else do you want?"

"O-On behalf of Lord Mordred, I request your assistance for the plan to assassinate King Midgar."

"I understand. I shall lend you some of my agents."

Heh heh heh. The stage is set for a glorious war. Rose Oriana. I have prepared a little surprise for you. I hope you'll like my present.

Author's Note:

Hope you liked the German Lich. Yeah, I studied a bit of German and wanted to write some German lines, though I still needed the assistance of google translate. In the anime Minoru has a notebook with one of the pages written in German so I can assume he knows German too.

Chapter 37: Imposter
Chapter 37: Imposter

King Klaus Midgar sat in his office room reading reports of his agents' discovery… of undead hordes being found in the underground labyrinth underneath the capital city after an anonymous source leaked the news to them. He has since ordered his knights to seal off all entrance to the underground labyrinth and ordered them to cover it all up in order to prevent panic during the Bushin Festival. So far it went smoothly according to the reports he received.

"Hahh… To think that he is so close. Between him, the Cult and Shadow Garden… which is the lesser evil that I should side with?"

He contemplated his next move as he stood up from his chair. He has more work to do but he has to watch today's match as he needs to see his daughter's match against Duke Normann's son.

"Iris and Claude. The two of them are promising young warriors. The pillars of Midgar's future generation. To face these incoming threats, it would be best to tie Claude to her. Though his sister seems to be opposed to it due to recent incidents. Today I shall reach a compromise with her." The king said as he walked towards the guest room.

Yesterday's dungeon crawling was fun. Not because the dungeon has anything new or unique compared to other dungeons but because I had an audience for my shadowbroker play! I even managed to impress Beta with my German! No treasure again though. My nemesis, the Necromancer. How stingy you are! At least I didn't find the dreaded Mimic this time so I'll spare your nose. But I should've left a bad review for bad dungeon design! Meh. No matter.

At least Epsilon found another Artifact contained within some kind of loot box. I dislike gacha but I hope the content is valuable. Out of the three Artifacts we found years ago, only one of them could turn some profit and Gamma was already one step ahead of me on that front.

Today I was granted access to the VIP booth by my sister to watch the Bushin Festival. Free luxury is good but this might make me stand out! I hope I don't meet anyone important.

"Pooch? What are you doing here?" And of course someone important has to be here. Curse my luck.

"I-I received VIP ticket from my sister." While she was choking me. I replied.

"Is that so? Good! Now you get to watch the tournament with me! Let's go!"

"Hey! Hey! I don't consent to this!" I said as she dragged me to her seat,

"Good morning, Alexia. Good morning, Cid Kagenou." Which is right next to Princess Iris, a main character! Nooo! A mob like me shouldn't interact with someone like her!

"G-Good morning, Princess Iris." I greeted politely.

"You're surprisingly polite in front of my sis." Alexia said.

"Well, she ain't like you." I retorted.

"What's that supposed to mean?" She replied.

"Tee hee hee. You two seem to get along so well." Iris said while smiling at our antics.

""No we're not!"" We replied in perfect sync.

"Oh my. To think that you're so close that--"

""I'm telling you! It's not like that! And will you please stop copying me!?"" We shouted, once again in perfect sync. This is getting us nowhere. I should stop shouting. Everyone else in the VIP booth is watching us now.

We sat down on our chairs and drank our coffees while eating some snacks. Alexia made a funny face when I told Iris that she can add milk and sugar to her coffee if she didn't like the bitterness. She ends up liking it.

"How come I'm the only one…?" Alexia muttered. Being the only member of Black Coffee Club must suck, huh?

"Cid Kagenou. I apologize for taking so long but I'm sorry about what happened to you during the Zenon incident." Iris said while bowing her head.

"That's okay! The knights were just doing their duties after all." I replied.

"If only they were doing duties they were supposed to. Hahhh." Alexia said while sighing.

"I hope you can continue to get along with Alexia. She barely has any friends."

"S-Sis! I have friends other than Pooch, you know!? I recently hang out with them a lot!"

"Pooch?" Iris said confusedly.

"It's a nickname I gave him!" Alexia said while grinning mockingly at my direction.

"I see! How cute!" Iris just nodded, ignoring the implication of the humiliating nickname.

"S-So… who do you think is the strongest fighter in this tournament, Princess Iris?" I asked in order to change the subject. The onlookers looked interested in this subject too.

"Hmm… If I were to choose, there are a few fighters that I considered strong. First is Miss Annerose, the former Seven Blades of Velgalta member." Iris said.

"Ah! I've seen her fight! She's so strong that I don't think I could hold a candle to her!" Said mob character A sitting beside Iris.

"Indeed! But I still believe you can beat her, Princess Iris!" Said mob character B, who is behaving like a bootlicker right now.

"Ever since that incident, the popularity of the Royal Bushin has diminished so--" Said the mob character B before being cut by mob character A.

"Hey! Don't mention that in front of Princess Alexia!"

"That's fine. I'm not bothered. So who else caught your eye, sis?" Alexia said.

"Let's see. Obviously I'm interested in a rematch with Claude." Iris said.

"Claude? The son of Duke Normann? I heard he defeated you in a duel years ago!" Exclaimed mob character B.

"Hey! Don't be rude!" Scolded mob character A.

"It's fine. It is the truth. His swordsmanship was very subtle and tricky. But I've improved since then and I intend to win this time."

"Ohhh! As expected of Princess Iris!" Said mob character B. Iris maintained a neutral expression while Alexia almost frowns from all the bootlicking. These people make such good mob characters. Should I try being a sycophant? Nah. There is a risk of attracting more attention to myself. Sycophants are not invisible mobs but attention seekers after all.

"Speaking of another student, of course I'm interested in your sister too, Cid." Iris said.

"My sister?"

"Yes. Claire Kagenou. Although she lost to Ro… during the school's preliminaries, she's a talented swordswoman who's now representing Midgar Royal Spellsword Academy alongside Claude." Said Iris while carefully avoiding the subject of Rose, who has been replaced by my sister as the school's representative after she attacked her fiancé, probably for having such an awful name.

"I see. Well, she got me the ticket to this seat, telling me to watch her fight." I replied.

"She's a good sister." Iris said. I disagree with that statement.

"And there's one person that I actually have little confidence in defeating." Iris stated. The onlookers are surprised by that statement. Interesting.

"Wh-Who could that be, sister?"

"Most people might not recognize her because she showed up wearing a hooded cloak and due to her long absence from the public, people didn't think she would actually show up but… there's no one else who would take the name Beatrix." Iris said. Beatrix, huh? That elf woman I met the other day and exchanged burgers with. She's strong but is she that famous?

"B-Beatrix!? The War Goddess herself!?" Said mob character A, answering my question.

"I-I can't believe that was really her! I thought that was an imposter or someone with the same name!" Said mob character B.

"It's really her. She obviously haven't shown her true power so far. That's probably why she flew under the radar for so long. But I watched her fight yesterday. She's good." Iris said.

"Ohh… But I believe you can do it, Princess! I'm rooting for you!" Said mob character B.

"Me too!" Said mob character A.

"Who are you interested in, Pooch?" Alexia asked.

"I dunno… Maybe Mundane Mann?"

"Mundane Mann?" Alexia said.

"Mundane Mann… I haven't seen him fight so I can't say." Iris said.

"Ah! I watched him fight! He was quite fast but he's weak. His stance is all wrong. I believe he's an amateur who got this far through luck!" Said mob character A, saying things I wanna hear.

"Well, we're gonna see him fight now. He's facing Annerose. Let's see how he fare against a former member of the Seven Blades of Velgalta." Alexia said, which reminds me it's almost time for my match against Annerose. The usual then.

"Where are you going, Pooch?" Alexia said when she saw me standing up.

"I'm going to the toi--"

"The first match of the day! Mundane Mann VS Annerose Nichtsehen!" I was cut by the announcer. What happened? I haven't entered the arena yet. I looked at the direction of the arena and saw something unbelievable.

Facing Annerose in the arena is… Mundane Mann… Wearing the armor and sword that Gamma provided me… But… I'm still here. What going on?

Impossible… There is an imposter… AMONG US!?

Pfft… I couldn't help myself.

I almost couldn't make it to Mundane Mann's match thanks to my sister complaining about me ditching her yesterday. I managed to convince my sister to let me go so I could prepare for my match while she would arrive late. I arrived just in time to see Mundane Mann facing Annerose. I see Iris, Alexia and Cid in the VIP booth. Cid looked as if he just saw a ghost. Pfffttt… Asshat also entered the VIP booth around the same time as me but I ignored him. He seems to be paying some attention to me though.

"Everything okay?" I asked Alexia while pointing at Cid.

"I don't know. Pooch just suddenly stopped responding." Alexia said.

"Hello? Earth to Cid?" I called out to him while snapping my fingers in front of his eyes but he still didn't respond. His eyes fixated on the sight of Mundane Mann in the arena… could it be... that….

HE'S A FAN OF MUNDANE MANN?

"Good morning, Claude." Iris greeted me.

"Good morning, Iris. Looking forward to today's fight?" I replied.

"Yes. Today is the day we'll have our rematch. I hope you're prepared to lose this time." Iris said.

"Right back at you, Iris."

I saw the bracket of today's match.

The first match is Mundane Mann VS Annerose.

The second match is Claire VS Imatry Notaloos.

The third match is Beatrix VS Rando Mook.
Gotta love these names.

And the last match of the day is me VS Iris.

Today is the day I'll have the long awaited rematch with Iris. She hides it well but she's definitely desperate to prove herself in this tournament in order to recover her damaged reputation.

It all started with Alexia's kidnapping. The reputation of the Knight Order, and by extension, her reputation took a blow thanks to my sister's influence due to my arrest. Her being unable to do anything about the monster rampage is another blow.

Not to mention she's carrying the pride of the Royal Bushin Style, the most famous swordsmanship style in Midgar, after its reputation was tainted by Zenon, the famous instructor of the Royal Bushin Style. I also happen to study it but it is not my main style so it's all on her.

Then the school incident happened and although it all ends well, many students still died that day and I outperformed her, my superior in the Crimson Order.

She is also shaken after witnessing the battle between me and Shadow back then.

And now she's probably prepared to lose against Beatrix. It'll still be an honor to face the legendary swordswoman bearing the title of the Goddess of War even if you lost after all.

Unfortunately for you, Iris. I shall humiliate you once again today. But for now, I shall watch the show I provided. Now then, Mundane Mann… Or to be more precise, imposter. What are you going to do against the real one?

I went to my seat away from the princesses… which happens to be beside P-P-Pfft…. Asshat… Dammit. I have no mask this time. I must hold back my laughter. Don't laugh. Don't laugh. Don't laugh.

"So you're the famous prodigy, Duke Normann's son, Claude Normann." Hentai Asshat said, making it much harder to hold my laughter.

Chapter 38: Doppelganger
Chapter 38: Doppelganger

"This is the first time we meet. I am Duke Perv Asshat of Oriana. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Mr. Claude." Perv shook my hand as he introduced himself.

"Likewise, Duke Perv." Hmmphh… My face is stiff… Must… not… laugh…

"I heard you bested Princess Iris years ago. Will you win again today?"

"I will."

"How confident. Iris has made a name for herself years after you defeated her while you haven't done much." A familiar taunt. It won't affect me again, good sir.

"I was busy with many things."

"Ho? What kind of things?"

"Secret and serious things." Like deciding what to do to your kingdom. Should I do what the Chinese Communist Party did to Tibet? Or do the Tiananmen Square Massacre? Or just plain ol' Holocaust? I have to make a note to massacre civilian protesters at some point in the future.

"Perhaps you're still trying to fight Necromancer? I heard he appeared in your school."

"Indeed he did."

"It must be frustrating for you that he was so out of your reach."

"…." I couldn't reply as I clenched my fist. Must… not… laugh…

"Oh, I'm sorry. That was insensitive of me." Perv said with a smug smile as if he managed to offend me. My face is stiff due to holding back my laughter that I was unable to properly respond to his Verbal Fencing. That name is just unfair!

I took a deep breath while he smirked triumphantly.

"Battle start!" Shouted the announcer.

"Ho. So the battle has started." He said as our attention are now focused on the match.

Annerose launched herself to strike him in an instant. She's fast but Mundane Mann blocked her slash.

"Ho? That Mundane Mann is more competent than I thought." Perv commented.

I didn't reply as I kept watch on my minion, my zombie Mundane Mann as he fought against Annerose. He was formerly an aristocrat from Altena Empire who were disowned by his own family for being lazy and incompetent. He died years ago when he was contracted to guard a cargo of Possessed from Velgalta, presumably killed by Shadow Garden.

I turned him into a zombie simply because even when he's alive he already somewhat resembled zombies with how pale he was. Just a random mood I had. Despite his weak body I put too much work on him and made him stronger than he could ever dream of when he was alive. But sadly he remains the weakest among my Seven Wraiths, even with the addition of Sherry.

When I saw that fake Mundane Mann on the street that day, I knew I had to bring the real one here to have fun with his imposter. Now then, how will you respond, imposter?

Mundane Mann countered Annerose's strike with a brutal slash. Annerose was bewildered. The man before her isn't the same man she has spoken to before. He was even more silent than usual and yet his sword style… it felt wrong to her. He wasn't as subtle and quick as he was before.

"Could it be… Mundane… You….?" Annerose muttered.

Mundane Mann frowns slightly. Has she figured it out? What a pain in the-- He thought before being interrupted.

"DID YOU PUT ON MORE WEIGHTS, MUNDANE!?" She shouted.

"What…?" Mundane Mann said confusedly.

"How sly of you! I can't believe you would underestimate me that much! What an insult! As a former member of the Seven Swords of Velgalta, I'll show you your folly!" Annerose charged again, this time aiming to attack him from his left side.

Mundane Mann thrusts his blade on the direction she's coming but she deflected the thrust with her own blade and got into position to slash him, he barely dodged her attack and was grazed in his cheek.

"Why… Why did you hold back against me…?" Annerose, who's supposed to be happy after landing an injury to her opponent, no matter how miniscule, was instead feeling humiliated.

"Am I not worthy to be your opponent? Is that it!?" She shouted angrily and charged again, going for a high speed thrust, which he dodged. But in his haste to dodge her attacks, he failed to dodge her other thrusts, which damaged his armor and drew some blood.

He responded by launching a wide horizontal slash with his sword aiming at her neck. She dodged it easily by cracking her neck. "See? I told you I can do this too!" She said while smiling proudly, further confusing Mundane Mann.

"Hahh… This is too troublesome for me." Mundane Mann muttered lazily.

"Wha… So I'm still… not worth your time…?" Muttered Annerose angrily.

Mundane Mann was about to prepare himself for her next strikes before he heard the voice of his master in his head.

"What are you doing?"

"M-Master!?" Mundane Mann exclaimed, his body trembles in fear but Annerose noticed that his fear is not caused by her.

What's going on? She thought.

"Stop playing around and finish her!"

"Y-Yes, master." His previously lazy expression is now replaced with a determined one as he released a terrifying aura.

"I see what's happening to you. Someone is controlling you, isn't it?" Annerose muttered sadly as Mundane Mann wordlessly charged in at high speed and prepared an uppercut.

It's fast! Annerose barely dodged the sudden attack but she took advantage of Mundane Mann's opening to retaliate with a thrust, which he caught with his hand.

He's stronger too! She was unable to remove her sword which was caught in his hand as he moved to give her a headbutt on the face, knocking her away.

"Aghhh!!" Annerose fell to the ground. Mundane Mann threw her sword away and moved to finish her.

"Not yet!" She shouted as she suddenly rolled away to dodge his stab, which sent dust and pieces of soil flying in the air upon impact.

She dashed to retrieve her sword as he gave chase. She was not fast enough as he reached her immediately and was about to decapitate her with an overhead slash.

So this is it. Annerose thought as she closed her eyes and prepared herself for death… only to hear a clanging sound of blade against blade.

"Huh?" She opened her eyes to an unexpected sight… the sight of another Mundane Mann facing the Mundane Mann who was about to kill her just seconds ago.

Here he comes. The imposter Mundane Mann. He parried the strike meant to decapitate Annerose and they now stood in front of each other, staring into each other's soul while the audience are bewildered at this unexpected arrival.

"What!?" Alexia exclaimed.

"Another Mundane Mann? But how?" Iris said.

"Are they twins?"

"What happened?"

"What are the guards doing?"

"Isn't that illegal?"

"Two of them?"

"Did he use an Artifact?"

I heard mumbles from unimportant background characters as I kept my eyes on the imposter.

"Hoo… How unexpected. To think that another Mundane Mann would appear." Muttered Perv almost losing his smug smile.

"Perhaps one of them is an imposter." I said.

"I see. Which one do you think is the imposter, Mr. Claude?" Perv asked me.

"Hard to say when we hardly know the man. Perhaps whoever stood victorious in the end could be the considered the real one."

"Hm. I like how you think, Mr. Claude."

Now… Show me your power, imposter.

I was about to let this other Mundane Mann to fight in my place but… damn! The way he fights is so sloppy! Ruining my ideal image of Mundane Mann! He let Annerose hurt him a few times! It's almost as if he doesn't even want to be there. At least until he began powering up.

You may be trying to redeem yourself by powering up, another Mundane Mann, but I already decided to not let this go any further. That's why while everyone's attention was occupied by the fight, I sneaked out, changed into my Mundane Mann disguise, and entered the arena stylishly.

I know that you're like me, someone who wants to join the tournament with a fake identity too, but I cannot forgive you for stealing my thunder and being bad at it. I shall teach you how a true Eminence in Shadow does things!

Though at least I have to be grateful to you for providing me with a good scenario for my shadowbroker play. Who is this second Mundane Mann? Where did he come from? Who is stronger between the two of them? Questions like that are no doubt flying around the people's minds right now.

"You…" He stared at me hatefully.

Annerose stared at us both with confusion before she suddenly realized something and shouted.

"I see! So you two are twin brothers! And…" She turned towards me. "And you joined Bushin Festival in order to lure your brother out and… to save him from enslavement!" Hooo. Not a bad scenario. Let's roll with it.

I turned towards her and said "This is my fight."

"Alright. But you owe me a proper fight later!" She said as she backed down.

"U-Um… Which one of you is the real Mundane Mann?" The referee asked as he walked close to us.

"We're about to settle it. Don't interfere." I said as I charged in and locked blades with the other Mundane Mann.

"M-Miss Annerose. I shall disqualify them and—" I heard the referee said.

"No. Let them be. It won't take long." Annerose said with a hint of sadness.

We wordlessly exchanged several blows. Despite his power up, the other Mundane Mann wasn't able to keep up as slash wounds starts appearing on his body.

"Ughh…!" He grunted as I pushed him away with a strong blow that he blocked.

He charged again for a slash, which hits me…

"It's only an afterimage." I said as I appeared behind him, unharmed by his slash, before kicking him in the butt, which sends him away. He grows more frustrated as he stood back up and powers up once again.

"His power… it's still rising!?" I heard Annerose exclaimed as we saw dark aura enveloping him.

He moved at higher speed to try and match mine but as he sent another naïve slash, I dodged his slash within a hair's breadth and counter attacked immediately, giving him a massive gash on his chest and sent him flying once again.

"Ughhh…!!" He merely grunted as he stood back up. It didn't seem to hurt him that much. What an amazing pain tolerance. As he stood back up I noticed something. His anger and frustration slowly dissipates and his expression becomes calmer. I could've sworn I saw the corner of his lips rising slightly.

"Such huge wounds and yet he…!?" Annerose exclaimed again with her hand covering her mouth.

I knew he was smiling not because he found this battle exciting. I could tell from how his strikes become slower, sloppier and more unrefined than before, as if he's barely trying. I deflected all his attack as I observed him.

I stared at his tired eyes and saw how much he wants to go away and sleep.

I don't even want to be here. I just wanna sleep, man. His face seems to imply.

"Very well. I shall grant you your wish." I said as I moved in an instant and decapitated him. I saw him smiling as his head rolled on the ground.

Author's Note:

According to Master of Garden, Annerose is so gullible and thus is ripe for misunderstandings, hence I made her misunderstand the two Mundane Manns. It sorta fits her surname Fucianas/Nichtsehen. I hope it was entertaining for you all.

Chapter 39: The Long Awaited Rematch
Chapter 39: The Long Awaited Rematch

Mundane Mann decapitated his "brother" and stared at the severed head's peaceful and smiling face. Annerose watched him with sorrow in her heart.

To think that he loved his brother so much that he was willing to free his brother through death. Thought Annerose.

"Huh… Do I disqualify him or…?" The referee muttered.

"Let us continue the match." Mundane Mann said.

Ah… So your heart is so strong that you wouldn't be shaken by your brother's death. Very well. I shall answer your resolve with all my might! Thought Annerose as she readied her blade.

She has studied Mundane Mann's movements when he fought his "brother" and knew that if she lost focus, he would catch her off guard with his high speed. She concentrated and watched his movements.

Mundane Mann moves at high speed and was about to strike her from behind.

"There!!!" Annerose, who predicted his movements based off her observation, almost caught him with a slash, which would hit him had he did not stop himself.

"Huh!?" Annerose was bewildered, seeing her opponent stopping himself before her blade reached him. A perfect dodge.

What an amazing control of space… Ahh… How beautiful. She thought as she received his counter attack.

"Winner! Mundane Mann!" The announcer announced.

Mundane Mann carried the corpse of his "brother" out of the arena as the injured Annerose looked on with a sad smile as she struggles to stand back up.

You're going to… give him a proper burial, aren't you? The bond between brothers… How beautiful. Thought Annerose as tears fell down her cheeks.

"Mundane Mann…" Annerose muttered as she was escorted out by the medics.

Outside of the arena, Mundane Mann sneakily dumped his "brother's" corpse into a river before removing his disguise and sneaked back into the VIP booth as Cid Kagenou with a proud smile on his face.

Mundane Mann's match made a huge commotion and I could even sense some nervousness from Perv. The zombie Mundane Mann was disappointing as expected despite all the improvements I put on his body. That's what I get for using a weak corpse as a base and using his actual memory as the base for his artificial intelligence, which made him retain his original lazy personality. I still got a lot of experience from experimenting on him though so it's not all bad. But the fake Mundane Mann certainly didn't disappoint. Brilliant show, fake Mundane Mann. Now I want you to replace the real one as one of my Seven Wraiths. But that comes later.

"Hm?" I looked at the direction where Cid is currently sitting besides the stunned princesses. I could've sworn no one's sitting there before... Must be my imagination. Cid has lost his shonen protagonist aura that he had when he fought Rose so I've lost interest in him.

Claire and Beatrix's match went uneventfully. Needless to say they stomped their opponents hard. Imatry Notaloos tried his best but still lost to Claire. A random character like Rando Mook absolutely has no chance against Beatrix.

Claire entered the VIP booth after her match and started arguing with Alexia but I ignored that as well.

Now, the long awaited rematch is about to begin.

"Good luck, Sister! Make sure to kick his ass!" Alexia said.

"Language, Alexia! And thank you!" Iris scolded.

As we are about to exit the VIP room, my sister entered the room, walking towards me.

"Kick her ass, brother!" Charlotte said.

"Language, Charl." I scolded.

"Tee hee hee." She made the cute Tee hee face with her tongue sticking out and her hand scratching behind her head. I just smiled and pat her head while reminiscing the past, when she said that line when I first faced Iris.

Then someone else entered the VIP room accompanied by two guards, one of them being Glen of the Crimson Order, making a commotion.

"F-Father!" Iris exclaimed as she bowed before her father. Me and everyone else follow suit.

"Raise your heads." King Klaus said as he walked towards his chair accompanied by his guards. We raised our heads to face him.

"I hope you two would do our kingdom proud, Iris and Claude." King Midgar said, addressing us both.

"Show the world the might of Midgar!" He exclaimed before he sat on his chair.

"Yes, your majesty!" We both shouted in unison before we stood up and began walking towards the door together.

Before I left the room though, Charlotte tugged on my sleeve with a sad face as if guilty about something.

"What is it, Charl?" I asked.

"N-Nothing! Good luck on your match!" She replied as she let go of my sleeve with a sad smile. I left the VIP booth with Iris.

On the way we passed several knights and nobles who offered words of encouragements to us both, though most of them are directed at Iris.

After we passed through them, Iris stopped in the hallway.

"Claude…" She said as she took a deep breath.

"What is it, Iris?"

"Do you like Alexia?"

"That's sudden… But I do like her. As a friend."

"I see. T-To be honest… I had a talk with father the other day. He said that… although the initial plan was to have you join the royal family by marrying Alexia… Recently he has been encouraging me to…"

Oh? The king himself has decided that it is best that I am betrothed with Iris? The heir to the throne herself? Perhaps to fix her damaged reputation? Heh heh heh.

"I see. Do you dislike it, Iris?"

"To be honest… no. You're a good man, Claude. It's just… I've devoted myself to my duties as a princess so much that I… never thought about… marriage. Especially since I'm older than you by a few years…" She said with an uneasy smile.

"Isn't marrying your duty too?" I said in order to push her mind into the direction I want.

"Huh?"

"That's why marriages between royals and aristocrats are arranged. To ensure the security of their families. It was duty, not luxury."

"You're right, Claude. I suppose I was too naïve. Still, I hope we can get along better from now on." She said with a smile.

"I agree. We should go on dates sometimes."

"D-Dates…" She said with a blush.

"A-Anyway, let us go. I'm sure the crowd are excited to see our match. Hold nothing back, alright?"

"Right back at you, Iris."

The king is alone and both Iris and Claude are having a match. This should be the perfect opportunity to assassinate King Klaus but it should be King Raphael who did it with his own hands! The impact would be much greater if that's the case and the Cult's influence won't be exposed as we would blame it all on King Raphael.

We could then start a war between Oriana and Midgar. Lord Fenrir's faction along with the Thirteen Night Blades shall weaken Midgar from within. Then both kingdoms shall be ours by the end of the war… as long as nothing interferes with our plans.

But for now King Raphael needs to recuperate today so we can properly display him as a perfectly healthy and not at all manipulated king tomorrow. What a useless puppet.

Not to mention Rose hasn't shown herself yet. I need to be patient. With Lord Necromancer's assistance, this mission shouldn't fail even if Iris and Claude were to interfere and I, Perv Asshat, shall join the Rounds.

Now, let us see how strong these two Midgar prodigies are.

Claude Normann. It's been years since we last had a match. He rarely participated in tournaments due to independently investigating Necromancer and the Cult so I couldn't say how much he has grown since then. During his previous matches he obviously didn't show his true power. His current level of strength is still a mystery to me.

To be honest… I'm still sore about that defeat. That's why I've been training so hard. However, despite my training… I still couldn't accomplish much recently. Even Claude did better than me during the school incident.

I didn't hate him for the political pressures his sister gave me that led to my current predicament. I also didn't mind being betrothed to him. But my pride as a warrior cannot allow my constant failures to stain my reputation any further!

The disturbing things Alexia uncovered back in the Sacred Land… My father's reluctance to act on it… The existence of monsters beyond our imaginations…

As a princess… As the protector of Midgar, I must prove my worth here and now! Only then will I be able to do what I must do to protect my kingdom! And what better way to do that than to defeat the one who defeated me years ago? I must win this. I must!

I must become stronger… in order to protect Midgar from those monsters!

Iris adopted the Royal Bushin stance while I adopted the familiar Schlüssel stance. We stared at each other's forms while waiting for the referee to give us the signal to begin.

"Princess Iris Midgar VS Claude Norman! Match begin!" Announced the referee.

We both dashed at each other. Iris feinted a slash and went for a thrust which I deflected with a slight uppercut which turns to downward slash. Iris barely dodged it in time as it grazed her cheek.

I delivered another light downward slash and she blocked it before countering it with a horizontal slash, which I blocked too.

We end up going back and forth between slashing, feinting, dodging and parrying each other's attacks for a few seconds before she suddenly unleashed a mighty downward slash that broke parts of the ground it struck, sending soil and dust flying.

After I dodged said slash by stepping back, she moved in high speed to strike me from behind with another mighty slash. I turned back and delivered my own slash, which clashed with hers, our blades now locked with each other.

"You're still as skilled as ever, Claude." Iris said.

"You've gotten better too. But…" I said as I pushed her back, surprising her because she didn't expect me to be this powerful.

"Ughh!" She relented and jumped back.

Not giving her a chance, I chased after her and prepared to deliver an uppercut, which she blocked but it sent her flying to the air.

"What…?" She exclaimed as she saw me jumping to chase her. She braced herself for impact as I delivered a downward somersault slash, clashing with her blade and sent her crashing to the ground.

"Ughh… So strong…!?" Iris said as she slowly stood up and prepared herself for another bout.

Iris, who is proud of her overwhelming power, was once defeated by me who is more skilled. But now that she found herself beaten in a contest of strength as well, she gritted her teeth in frustration.

"HAAAAAAA!!!" She unleashed the full extent of her magic power, huge red aura envelops her body.

Hooo… This ikemen is pretty strong. Though I recognized his stance, which is a western medieval sword style. Is it a coincidence or is he a reincarnator too? Just like me and the Necromancer?

"Iris is… getting pushed back…?" Alexia said in bewilderment. Most of the audience felt the same. They didn't expect him to be that strong.

"He's pretty amazing, isn't he?" I said.

"I'm sure you can get to that level if you actually try, Cid." My sister said from beside me.

"I can't see Pooch ever trying something. He has no desire to stand out." Alexia said.

"Hmph! My brother always tried his best to be better! I know him better than you!" My sister said.

"Is that so? Heh." Alexia smirked and my sister ain't having it.

"What is that face for? You looking for a fight?"

"Will you two shut it so I can properly watch my brother beat the crap out of Iris!?" The ikemen's sister shouted and the two of them glared at each other before shutting up and paid attention back to the arena.

"Oh, looks like Iris is getting serious." Alexia said as we watched Iris being enveloped by huge red aura.

I can already see that he already won this match. I hope he can win against Beatrix tomorrow so I can face him in the finals. I wonder how I should end this play? Maybe after beating him I should say some cryptic lines to him before disappearing. Yeah, that sounds dope.

Oh, that reminds me… I will have to face my sister tomorrow! I shouldn't have killed that other Mundane Mann! I could've trained him in the ways of Shadowbrokers for a day and then let him fight her tomorrow! Oh well. If I have no other options I could just rely on the ol' reliable excuse, even if she would be mad at me for not watching her match.

Iris charged at high speed, intending to give me a full powered downward slash. Parrying this blow normally will destroy my steel sword no matter how much I reinforce it with magic and dodging will still cause the shockwave of the impact to send me flying.

With one hand in my sword's handle and another grabbing the blade, I maintain proper balance of my sword as I blocked Iris's strike. She was shocked I was able to block it without letting my sword break as she didn't expect me to use halfswording method. My sword still got dented from the blow though.

I pushed her sword away and with the same momentum moved to perform a halfsworded stab on her stomach.

"Uaghh…!" She grunted as I pushed her to the ground with my sword still lodged in her stomach and pinned her down there. She grabbed my sword to prevent it from digging deeper while trying to escape.

"No… I can't…" She muttered as she gets more and more desperate.

"Give up. You've lost. If I keep this up, you'll die." I said.

"Ughh…." She eventually relented with a frustrated face.

"Winner! Claude Normann!" The referee announced.

I walked away, passing medics who are there to carry Iris to the infirmary.

Author's Note:

Poor Mundane Mann was dumped to the river by his "brother"! How cruel! And Iris is once again defeated.

Chapter 40: The Calm Before the Storm
Chapter 40: The Calm Before the Storm

I defeated Iris, leaving the crowd in awe. Now my position as Iris' suitor is secure. When I entered the hallway, I met Beatrix.

"Fascinating fight. Your name is Claude Normann, right? I look forward to tomorrow's match." She said in a soft voice.

"Likewise, Lady Beatrix."

"Can I ask you a question?"

"You can ask anything."

She lowered her hood and exposed her beautiful face. "Have you met an elven girl who looks like me?"

I was absolutely stunned. Not by her beauty but her resemblance to No. 001.

"A-Ahh… I don't think I have." I lied through my teeth.

"Really?"

"Really."

"You're not lying?"

"Indeed, I'm not."

"I see. I was looking for my niece. Since many people came here for the Bushin Festival, I thought she might be here. I also participated in the Bushin Festival because I was looking forward to clashing blades with strong people like Shadow and Necromancer who I heard was in this kingdom but sadly they didn't participate in this tournament."

"W-Well… they are criminals so I don't think they'll be allowed to participate." One of them is here though, right in front of you. Still, she's an airhead isn't she?

"I see… Your swordsmanship. Where did you learn it?"

"It was self taught."

"Is it? It's almost unbelievable that such a style is self taught. Then again, I've never seen someone wield sword like that."

"Thank you very much. Maybe tomorrow you should ask around to see if anyone has seen your niece."

"I asked Princess Iris and she didn't know. I also asked Cid the other day. He also didn't know."

"Is that so?" Oh? So she met Cid too?

"But I can sense that Cid has a potential to be strong." Cid? Strong? Pffft.

"Really? You think so?"

"Yes. I think so."

"Very well. I'll trust your judgment, Lady Beatrix. Now if you'll excuse me, I must depart." I bowed.

"See you tomorrow." She bowed back and we parted ways.

The match of the day is over and I went home with my sister. She's strangely quiet today. I wonder what happened.

"Is something on your mind, Charl?" I asked while we walked the streets to our apartment.

"I… met with the king today… And he…"

"Ah. My planned engagement with Iris, isn't it? I've heard of it."

"But… Don't you love Sherry…?" I stopped walking. Sherry huh…?

"You said you would take responsibility of her."

"I did. But we haven't done the deed, in case you're wondering."

"Ehhhh!!? Then why did you say you will take responsibility!?"

"Hee hee hee." I covered my mouth with one hand while chuckling.

"You're a meanie, brother! I was worried about your feelings!!" She shouted as she hit my back lightly multiple times. Eventually she stops.

"Haaahh… So, do you like Sherry?" She asked after a sigh.

"… Yes. As a friend." I answered... lying but not really lying… it's complicated.

"Do you like Iris?" She asked again.

"Well, she's not as bad as you think. She's mature but surprisingly girly and…"

"Do you like her or not!?" She asked yet again.

"That comes with time, Charl."

"Well, make up your mind before you regret it!" She said with a pout before walking away.

"Yes, yes! I know!" I said as I chased after her. Haahhh. What a troublesome sister I have. Always meddling in my love life.

It was already night and yet I couldn't stop training, despite my wounds. The knights, the servants and even Alexia tried to make me stop but… It's not enough. Not enough at all. I'm too weak. My defeat at Claude's hands revealed just how weak I am. I must push on! I must!

"Aghhh…." I finally succumbed to my fatigue and fell to my knees. Pieces of wood and stones surrounds me, having fallen victim to my rage and frustration.

"Dammit! Not yet!!" I shouted as I tried to stand back up.

"It's not good to push your body too hard without giving it rest. You'll just harm your body even further." A soft female voice said behind me.

"Lady… Beatrix…" I muttered between heavy breaths as I looked at her direction.

"But I…"

"Give your body some rest. You won't get stronger without it. Trust me."

"Ughh… I… Okay… Thank you…" I said as I collapsed on the ground, nearly losing consciousness.

She picked me up in a princess carry.

"Lady… Beatrix… How do I… get strong…?" I asked.

"You are strong." She answered.

"But not enough… not nearly…." I gritted my teeth in frustration.

"Everyone has their own ways to become strong." She answered.

"Will you… help… me… teach me your… ways?" I pleaded weakly while out of breath. She couldn't answer. Then I remembered the reason she's even here.

"….Ah. Forgive me. You have your own… duties to fulfill… I can't…"

"It's okay. I'll teach you what I can during my stay in Midgar." She answered.

"T-Thank… you…" I said as I allow my consciousness to slip away.

In the night I sneaked out of the room after putting my sister (who once again insisted on us sleeping in the same room but different beds) to sleep with hypnosis. She is less cautious now and thus it is finally possible to put her to sleep. I teleported to my base in Everick to train Sherry in the magic arts.

She has grown exponentially stronger since we began our lesson. She no longer has nightmares about people she killed and can now kill people without hesitation. She still takes no pleasure in killing, although… so do I.

She also absorbed my lessons about magic like a sponge, now capable of casting spells and enchanting items. I never shared my spellcasting knowledge to anyone but I did taught some other people about enchanting so I won't be the only one working Pseudo-Artifact production but she has surpassed them all in such a short time.

Her talent is astonishing but as a beginner she's still heavily reliant on Artifacts to strengthen herself though. Without equipping Artifacts, she would be weaker than the even zombie Mundane Mann, the weakest of my Seven Wraiths, who I need to replace soon.

I manipulated her into becoming crueller and more obedient towards me with a carrot and stick approach. I would wear the Necromancer's mask and behave coldly while giving her a task and then reward her by taking off my mask and give her praises, hugs and headpats as Claude when she managed to finish the task.

She also took my research into hypnosis and starts exploring brain altering magics with unhealthy obsession that scares even me. It seems like she has chosen her ultimate weapon. But since this research will take time, I told her to focus on destruction magic in order to increase her battle potential.

She is slowly becoming the perfect pawn… the perfect villainess I wanted her to be.

"Lord Necromancer! Look! I managed to cast Chain Lightning!" She said with a happy face.

"Good work, apprentice." I said as I took off my mask and gave her a headpat, which earned her a smile.

"Now listen, Sherry. Tomorrow I will take you to the field. We're going to Midgar Royal Capital."

"To Midgar?"

"Yes. Our objective is to serve as a distraction as Perv Asshat assassinates King Midgar."

"I see. I shall prepare myself then." She replied callously, not caring about the plan to kill a monarch.

"Good. Some of the other Seven Wraiths members will assist you. One of them would like to clash with Beatrix after all. And you'll need this." I said as I gave her a black robe and a white mask.

"Very well. Thank you Claude."

You shouldn't thank me, my sweet Sherry. You really shouldn't.

*Knock knock knock* A knock on the door.

"Enter, Gilfried." The door opens, revealing the figure of the middle aged man who is currently a member of my Seven Wraiths due to his loyalty, reliability and because he is one of my first minions. He is also among the few who knew who I really am.

"My lord. Your agents in the Lawless City received message from Yukime reporting about suspicious activities in the Crimson Tower. They fear that the vampires have turned against you." Gilfried said.

"Hmph. I knew they would do that. They are preparing for the Red Moon."

"What!? Then we should--" Gilfried exclaimed before I cut him off.

"We should let them do as they pleased. I wanted a sample of the Blood Queen myself."

"I see. As expected of you, my lord! To think you didn't fear the legendary Red Moon!" Gilfried said with a crazed expression.

"Indeed. Ignore the vampires for now. We must prepare for the event tomorrow."

In a luxurious living room inside the Villa rented by Oriana diplomats, two male figures sat on chairs facing each other.

The first figure is Perv Asshat, Mordred's most prominent pawn in Oriana. The second figure is King Raphael Oriana himself. King Raphael now looked healthier after resting and getting drugs out of his system, drugs that are no longer necessary to control him as the Necromancer has casted his hypnosis upon the king, making him a perfect pawn for tomorrow's stage.

"How are you feeling, your majesty?" Asked Perv Asshat.

"I'm feeling better now. Tomorrow I am ready to do my part." King Raphael replied with a sadistic smile.

"Is that so? That's reassuring. What a terrifying ability Lord Necromancer has. I was scolded by Lord Mordred for asking for his assistance because it made me indebted to him but I believe this was worth it. Soon war will break out and you will be its catalyst. You are ready for it, don't you?"

"Do not worry, Lord Perv. I shall play the role of a mad king well."

"Really? Do you feel no shame or remorse for what you're about to do? To plunge your kingdom into war and chaos? And to doom your daughter into a fate worse than death?"

"Absolutely not. In fact I would do it with great pleasure." The king grins.

"Ha ha ha! To think that yesterday you were just a hollow shell but now you talk as if you're one of us already!" Perv said while grinning alongside the king.

"It is all thanks to Lord Perv and Lord Necromancer for showing me the correct path."

"Good. Very good." Replied Perv Asshat with a satisfied grin as one of his agents entered the room after knocking.

"Excuse me, Lord Perv. We have received reports from our agents about the identity of Mundane Mann."

"Let me guess. They didn't find anything?"

"Y-Yes. Unfortunately."

"Hmph. No matter. Lord Necromancer has already informed me of Mundane Mann's identity."

"Wh-What!?" The agent exclaimed in bewilderment.

"Mundane Mann is a former aristocrat from Altena Empire who was disowned by his own family and was killed years ago by Shadow Garden when he worked for the Cult as a mercenary. The Mundane Mann that was killed today was the real one that was revived by Lord Necromancer's magic."

"B-But there is another--"

"Lord Necromancer said he will take care of him so we don't have to worry about a thing. Just focus our agents for tomorrow."

"What about Iris Midgar and Claude Normann, Lord Perv?"

"He will also take care of them. With his power on our side, there is no chance of failure."

Author's Note:

Info dump chapter before the next chapter which will have action scenes. Also, progress could be slower or even halted for the next week (2nd December 2023 at the time of this writing) because I have some irl stuff to do so I'll publish all finished drafts before then. Also, I can't believe it's been a month since I started writing this fic. Time passes so fast.

Chapter 41: Scary Sister
Chapter 41: Scary Sister

Today is the day that I fulfil my mission. After today, the seat of the Rounds is within sight.

"Good morning, King Raphael. I see you're… healthier than yesterday." King Midgar said as he addressed King Oriana who's walking beside me while hiding his suspicion. He is accompanied by 2 guards from the Crimson Order, including Glen the Lion Beard, and his minister.

"I thank you for your concern over my health, King Klaus. I've managed to recover after a day's rest." King Oriana replied with a polite smile. Behind us are two First Children from the Cult who are disguising as bodyguards. If push comes to shove, they will assist in killing King Midgar today.

"I see. Then shall we?" King Midgar said as he led us to the VIP booth. Both he and King Oriana sat on chairs reserved for kings, on the highest platform in the booth. Behind the chairs is a statue of Olivier (or at least the historical version of her which depicts her as a man) with an Artifact sword in its hands. I stood beside King Oriana while observing the people who are present here.

The only people worth remembering that I can see are Princess Alexia Midgar, Claude Normann, Charlotte Normann along with Duke Normann and his wife. The whole Normann family is here today. Iris didn't seem to be present after her humiliating defeat yesterday. That's a plus for me. I only need to worry about Claude Norma— No. How silly of me. With Lord Necromancer's assistance, that boy will not stand a chance. I shouldn't be too paranoid or I'll lose my focus.

"Hm?" I saw a black haired boy leaving the booth.

"Toilet. Toilet."

Hmph. What a fool. Why am I distracted by such an insignificant insect?

"Excuse me, ma'am. This is the VIP booth. Do you have a ticket?" There's a commotion at the door.

"She's with me. I invited her here." I heard Iris' voice. So she decided to show up after all. But who is her guest? I saw a woman whose face is obscured by a hood.

"She is Beatrix, the Goddess of War." Huh!? Beatrix herself!? The woman who awakened the blood of heroes on her own!? Why is she— Ah! I was too focused on my mission that I didn't notice her name on the bracket. She will have a match against Claude Normann today!

"Duke Perv. What's wrong?" King Oriana said.

"N-Nothing, your majesty." I answered.

"Don't be so stiff. Just relax and enjoy the show." He said with a smile. I noticed King Midgar silently observing our interaction from the corner of his eyes, most likely with suspicion.

Calm down! Calm down! Lord Necromancer will handle her as well! I just hope my debt to him wouldn't increase too much after this! Now then, Rose. Come! Come so I can end this farce once and for all!

Today is the day that I, as Mundane Mann, must face my sister. I managed to trick Alexia using the good ol' reliable excuse which makes her too disgusted to even question it so I managed to leave the VIP booth. Her sister was strangely absent, maybe not feeling well after her defeat yesterday. The ikemen Claude and his sister didn't pay attention to me too. Good! But the guy with the perverted name somehow gave me a stink eye as I left though.

The fact that they didn't notice me sneaking out yesterday is a blessing because it means I can use this excuse today without worry of it being repetitive.

"Mundane Mann! I know you're strong after you defeated Annerose and your doppelganger yesterday! But for my future and my brother's, I shall defeat you!" Claire declared as we stood face to face in the arena.

"Haahh…" I can't help but sigh. This is the first time I face her not in a spar but in a real match. Sorry sis. I'm gonna defeat you. I'll make sure to be gentle though. I'm not a slave driver like you after all.

"Today's first match! Mundane Mann VS Claire Kagenou! Match begin!" The announcer shouted.

"HAAAA!!!" Sis charged in and went for a horizontal slash with ferocity that I expected of her. But sis, as someone who haven't surpassed nukes, you are too naïve and sloppy.

I blocked the slash easily with my sword.

"Huh!?" She retreated after she saw visions of her hands being sliced apart by my counter attack, which didn't actually happen in real life.

"What was…?" She muttered as she's getting nervous.

"Tch!" She charged again, this time stepping to the side midway in order to catch me off guard. But…

"Hyaahh!" A slight twitch from me and she suddenly saw visions of being bisected. She end up abandoning her assault to take a few steps back. She clutched her sides, where she was bisected in her visions, and took a breath to calm down.

She tried to take a step forward but saw a vision of her leg being sliced apart.

"Ughh!" She grunted as she felt the phantom pain in the leg that was sliced in the visions and fell to one knee.

"Not yet…!" Not giving up, she stood up again and tried to adopt a stance before seeing a vision of her head being sliced off and falling to the ground. "Aghh!" She grabbed her neck and breathed heavily. I might've overdone it.

"This sensation… Cid?"

Hm? What the… She realized it? Impossible! How did…?

Oh no. I developed this technique while sparring with her as a child and I could've sworn she touched her neck after I gave her a subtle vision of me slicing her neck back then. She experienced a weaker version of this technique! It's a mistake to use it on her!

"Heh… I knew it… I knew it…! Cid…!" She muttered while smiling ominously as she stood back up.

Oh no. She realized it… What should I do?

"I knew that you have the potential to surpass me, Cid! I knew it!" Hm? What is she talking about?

"Mundane Mann! You've shown me a path that my brother could take. For that, I'm grateful. In return, I shall give you my all!" It seems like she hasn't realized it. Thank goodness. I'll be a failure as an Eminence in Shadow if my identity is exposed here.

"Haaaaahh!!" She powers up and charged again, going for a thrust.

I tried giving her another vision of her being sliced apart but this time she didn't stop. She's even grinning like a maniac as she continued her advance. Scary! My sister is scary! Alright! Time to finish this!

I deflected her thrust with my blade and with my free hand, I gave her a hand chop to the back of her head, knocking her unconscious.

"Winner! Mundane Mann!"

Phew. It's over. For now…

Oh? I sensed something's happening. How exciting!

Brilliant display of swordsmanship, Mundane Mann, or if I'm not mistaken from my observations, my fated rival. That level of skill is not what normal people possessed. To think that you would be here in disguise. That technique which exploited your opponent's instinct… Brilliant. It was beautiful. I almost clapped my hands while doing an evil laugh.

"Sister. What did he do?" Alexia asked.

"I'm not sure… But it seems like he did something… and she was affected by it, except during the last moment. What a terrifying technique." Iris answered.

"Brother… He's good." Charlotte said with worry.

"Indeed he is." I replied.

"Can you beat him, Claude?" My father asked.

"I can't say for sure. But I'll need to defeat Beatrix first if I want to fight him." I answered.

"Beatrix will be a very tough opponent. But I believe in you Claude. You'll do us all proud. You always have." My mother said.

"Thank you mother. Now, if you'll excuse me." I stood up and bowed to my parents as I left.

"Kick her ass, brother!" My sister exclaimed.

""Language!"" Both my parents said in perfect sync.

"Claude!" Iris called out to me before I left the booth.

"Good luck!" She smiled, not letting yesterday's defeat to sour our relationship.

"Thank you, Iris." I replied with a smile.

Beatrix walked alongside me to the arena.

"Ready?" She asked.

"As ready as ever, Lady Beatrix." I replied with confidence.

"Good. Let us have a good match." She smiled as we kept walking. As we walked in the hallways, we passed through a girl wearing a dark blue hoodie carrying a violin bag. Her face is obscured by her hoodie and glasses but I know who that is.

You've finally come after all, Rose. Right on time. Now I just need to wait for a signal from the main body.

"I smell blood." Beatrix said as she stopped walking.

"I do too." I replied.

Instead of heading towards the arena, she went to the source of the smell with me following close behind and we found several corpses of Cult agents, probably 2nd and 1st Children. Most likely killed by Shadow Garden agents.

"Something's going on." She muttered.

"Indeed. And you don't have to know." Said the Necromancer who suddenly appeared behind us and knocked me through a wall with a wave of his hand.

"Eh…? Isn't that?"

"Really?"

"She has returned!?"

There seems to be a commotion. I looked towards the source of the murmurs and saw something unexpe—that I expected.

"Rose!" I shouted as I was about to run towards her before being stopped by my sister.

"Don't interfere, Alexia!" Iris whispered.

"But sister!" I whispered to her back.

"Just let Oriana decide her fate! We can't involve ourselves in this matter!"

"… Fine." I relented and she let go of my hand. We stood there to watch the scene unfolds.

"Ah… My wayward daughter has returned." Her father, King Oriana, who was nothing but a hollow shell a few days ago, addressed her with… a sinister tone that I did not expect.

"Father... You're… alright?" Rose said.

"I am, now that you're here." Her father replied.

"But… I thought…"

"You thought what? What were you thinking, embarrassing me like that? Did you have any idea how disappointed I am at your behaviour?" Her father cruelly said. This is not right. How could he say something like that? That's totally not something one would say towards his daughter!

I also noticed Duke Perv smirking like the evil bastard he is. He is behind this somehow!

"Father…?" Rose said, tears starting to form in her eyes.

"Now return to me, Rose. And face your punishment." The king said as he held out his hand in an inviting gesture. I was about to intervene before--

*BOOOOMM*

A sound of explosion erupted somewhere in the building, shaking the VIP booth and sent the people screaming.

"What's going on!?" I exclaimed before I saw King Oriana as he brandishes a rapier he had hidden within his white cape and stabbed my father in the middle of the chaos while grinning like a madman.

"FATHEEER!!!" I shouted.

Chapter 42: Regicide
Chapter 42: Regicide

"So you're Necromancer." Beatrix said as she brandished her blade after she saw me push Claude away through a wall with a wave of my hand.

"You would do well not to interfere, Goddess of War." I threatened with a generic line.

She of course ignored my words and went for a high speed lunge… which was blocked by my minion, an arrogant elven man named Arrinoth who wants to surpass Beatrix which led him to serve me as one of my Seven Wraiths. He wore a black coat with golden lines and patterns and wields a curved sword with runes carved on its blade. His long white hair is tied in a ponytail.

"You…!?" Beatrix exclaimed in surprise.

"Long time no see, Beatrix! This time I'll defeat you!" Arrinoth exclaimed while grinning.

"Who are you?" Ow… What a blow.

"What…!? After all those humiliating defeats you gave me…!?" Arrinoth muttered in anger.

"You will take care of her." I ordered him.

"You don't even need to ask, Necromancer." Arrinoth said as he brandished his curved blade.

"It's LORD to you!" I reprimanded him while releasing some of my aura, which startled even Beatrix.

"Y-Yes… my lord…!" He replied in fear.

I left him with Beatrix to check on the VIP booth.

"Ughh….!" I tried to stand up after being pushed back by the main body. He pushed me through two walls! Agh! My poor bones. I'm just a clone, man. Can't he be a bit gentler? If I die, I will simply disappear and leave no corpse and his scheme will be exposed if someone saw me disappearing!

A female figure wrapped in black cloak approaches. I know who she is.

"Mr. Claude." Nu said as she helped me stand up. She has been stalking the main body since days ago and today she's stalking me, not knowing I'm just a clone.

"Nu…? What are you…? Cough."

"Don't move. I'll get you to safety." She said as she carried me away from the scene.

"My family…" I said weakly.

"They'll be fine." She replied as we moved away while hearing an explosion coming from the direction where Beatrix was.

"What do you… mean?" I asked, making her stop.

"Shadow Garden will ensure that they are protected." She replied.

"Why…?" I asked curiously.

"Because you're a valuable ally. You noticed Princess Rose's Possession before any of us did." Huh? I did notice Rose's condition but how did they know?

"Rest assured that we won't allow any harm to befall your family." She replied while staring at me with serious eyes.

"Alright… I'll trust you." I said.

"There you are!" Shouted an assassin who immediately attacks us before being mutilated by Nu.

"UAAAGHH!!!"

"I will not allow you to harm him." She said with a sinister smile. Oh dear. Are my fears correct? Is she really a yandere? Oh dear.

"YOUR MAJESTY!!" Glen and the other knights shouted as they brandished their blades, only to be stopped by Oriana bodyguards.

"FATHER!!!" Iris shouted as well, brandishing her own blade.

Several guests in attendance sheds their disguise, revealing their black leather armors as they brandished their blades to attack everyone, bringing absolute chaos in the VIP booth. Several people in attendance are unable to fight due to not carrying swords and thus all they can do is run, this includes the Normann family.

"King Raphael… Why…?" King Klaus asked weakly with King Oriana's blade piercing his heart.

"Because I want chaos and destruction! That's all! HA HA HA HA HA!!" King Oriana laughed maniacally and pushed his fellow monarch to the floor as his daughter and everyone else looked on in complete disbelief.

"Father…?" She muttered as one of the assassins jumped towards her intending to knock her out before being sliced by Alexia.

"Alexia…?"

"Snap out of it, Rose!" Alexia shouted as she fought off another assassin.

"HAAAA!!!" Iris quickly defeated her opponents and dashed to attack King Oriana, who blocked her slash with a surprising degree of strength. The impact caused a shockwave that shatters the window.

"Wha!?" She exclaimed.

"Heh heh heh." The mad king only chuckled at her attempts as their blades are locked together.

"Why… Why are you doing this, King Oriana!?" She shouted angrily.

"As I said, I want chaos and destruction! It is the ultimate form of art that mankind could possibly create in this world! HA HA HA HA!!" The mad king laughed again as he pushed Iris back, shocking everyone.

Alexia managed to reach her father and grabbed his hand as he laid dying and bleeding on the floor.

"Father! Please! Don't leave us!" She desperately pleaded her father with tears falling down her cheeks.

"Alex…ia…. You and your… sister… must protect… the kingdom…" Her father said as life left him.

"NOOOOOO!!!!" Alexia screamed her lungs out.

An assassin dashed towards her from behind, ready to send her to join her father—

*TAP*

A sound of someone's light step heard as they beheld an armoured man entering the VIP booth through the window and with a brilliant display of skill dispatched multiple assassins at once with one swing, saving Alexia's life.

"That swordsmanship…!?" Rose muttered.

"You… You are…!?" Perv exclaimed, finally losing his smirk. Mundane Mann stood in front of him as black liquid substances began to envelop him.

"The time of lies has passed and we now enter the climax. My name is Shado--" He said before being interrupted.

"STYLISH BANDIT SLAYER!!" Rose exclaimed.

"Eh?"

Eh? Where did she hear that name? It's been so long since I used that name. Kinda cringe now that I think about it, which is why I changed my alter ego's name to Shadow.

Anyway, it's unexpected that Rose-senpai's father was such a bad man that he killed Alexia's father. Oh. Looks like he escaped along with that pervy guy. Now what should I do?

"Shadow… what are you doing here!?" Iris brandished an Artifact sword she took from the statue, pointing it at me while asking the question. Yeah. What am I doing here? What should I do here now that the enemies have escaped? Should I chase them?

Ah, I know! I should save the king and then disappear mysteriously! That should be dope! I took a step forward to approach the king but Iris stopped me.

"Not a step closer!" She shouted with tears falling down her cheeks and the sword trembling in her hands. With a slash, I sent the sword flying and went to approach her father.

"F-Father….!" Alexia is weeping for her father that she barely acknowledged my presence. I put my hand on his chest to attempt healing him. I can resuscitate his heart after it is healed.

"Huh? Shadow…?" Alexia finally noticed me.

I was about to pour my magic to the king… before being stopped by my nemesis who suddenly appeared and grabbed my hand while staring at my face.

"I can't allow you to save the king, nemesis." He said before launching an unexpected laser beam from his eyes at point blank range, which I was forced to dodge by stepping back.

"Necromancer!!" Iris shouted.

The Necromancer didn't reply and simply lifted the king's body and summons a runed sword to decapitate the king in front of Iris, Rose and Alexia.

"With this, there is no hope of saving him. Heh heh heh." He said as he threw the king's head on the floor.

Damn. He foiled my plan. Even I can't heal someone who was beheaded!

"YOU BASTARD!!!" Iris dashed towards him empty handed and tried to punch him in the face. But Iris is too slow and got pushed away after he simply waved his hand. Damn, I can tell that his magic is now stronger than before. This is interesting.

"Shadow! Apologies for my tardiness!" Alpha said as she and Beta arrived along with a squad of Shadow Garden members who stood in front of Rose protectively. We all stood while facing the Necromancer.

"My lord." A short and masked figure with distorted voice appeared beside him followed by a bunch of robed guys wearing skull masks in response to Shadow Garden appearing. The short figure wore a black robe and a white mask with two circular holes as eye sockets with tear like lines going down the eyes vertically and a horizontal straight line where the mouth is. The robe hides the short one's figure but… I could tell from a single glance who she is.

What a cool standoff we're having here. Yes! This is the right way to end this tournament arc! My beloved rival. You always know how to make things interesting!

"Why… Why are you doing this!?" Rose shouted at him.

"War." He replied with that menacing and distorted voice of his.

"What!? What war!?" Alexia shouted.

"A war which is millennia in the making. A war that has and will continue to be waged. A war that has been waged countless times over countless lifetimes. A war that always signals the end of an age." He replied ominously. Alpha, Beta, Rose and Alexia seemed to react to what he said by frowning. I wonder why. Do they find that cool too?

"You mean… your conflict with Shadow…!?" Alexia said. Oh, right. So they know the setting we're going with too. This is getting interesting.

"You… monsters….!" Oh look. Iris came back, carrying that Artifact.

"If you two want to fight… why involve our kingdom!? Why threaten our peace!?" Iris shouted as she once again brandished the blade.

"How else can it end an age? Heh heh heh." He said.

"What do you mean by ending an age?" Alpha asked.

"You shall see it soon." He replied as he brandished his staff and flew to the sky, with me following him by flying as well.

I escaped the VIP booth along with my parents. This is crazy! One moment we're watching the tournament, the next moment we're in a warzone! King Midgar was killed by King Oriana and now chaos suddenly break out.

"Claude! Where is he!?" My mother shouted worriedly.

"He should be fine! He was with Lady Beatrix!" My father replied.

As I ran, I suddenly felt… unwell. In fact, I felt… pain… in my left chest and I fell to the floor. Is this…?

"Charlotte?" My mother called out.

"I'm fine! Let's go!" I replied as I stood up and we kept running.

On the way we met 3 black robed people. From their silhouette, I can tell they're all women.

"Who are you!?" My father shouted.

"Have no fear. We are Shadow Garden and we're here to escort you out." Said one of them who I noticed has white long hair flowing out of her hood and a dagger strapped in her hips.

"What!?"

"This entire place has become a warzone. You must escape."

"Why are you helping us!?" My father esclaimed.

"Because your son is a valuable ally to the Shadow Garden and we won't allow his family to be harmed. Let's go."

"Hahhh. Alright. But I demand full explanation about why my son is in contact with criminals like you!" My father exclaimed before urging us to follow them.

I followed them while enduring this pain.

Oh brother… The day that I feared… has come...

If you noticed, Sherry's mask design is the same as Lutheran's mask in his manga design.

Auxiliary Chapter: A Sister's Worries
Auxiliary Chapter: A Sister's Worries

My brother is an angel. An absolute angel... if a bit perverted. He has always taken care of me since we were children. I love him so much.

When I was a child, I dreamed of marrying him. But of course I grew past that eventually. But I can't help but worry about his love life, about who will marry him in the future.

I have no idea how many noble ladies and even maids tried to seduce him. Even though my parents already planned to have him marry Princess Alexia, they still have the gall to try. So many marriage suitors for him rejected by me personally.

Even at school I had to ward off so many of those sycophants so they don't lead my brother astray.

My mother and father loved each other despite their marriages being a political one and I believe that's the key to a proper happiness… a happiness I wished my brother would have. That's why I paid attention to any women he interacted with.

During Princess Alexia's kidnapping, I punished Princess Iris for arresting my brother by using my father's influence and our family connections to scrutinize Iris' actions. She wouldn't dare cross me after that and she now listened to my demands when it concerns my brother. She isn't particularly close to my brother and their relationship in the Crimson Order is merely superior and subordinate.

Princess Alexia, the one who's supposed to be betrothed with my brother… She's unworthy of being with my brother considering how rudely she treated him! So many invitations to socialize and she made ridiculous excuses to avoid them! I noticed she has become closer to him recently though. But I still don't like her!

Princess Rose sparred with my brother a lot and they get along well but I don't see their relationship being more than friends. Even if they're interested in each other, I doubt King Midgar would allow brother to marry a foreign royalty as that would mean letting a great talent leave the kingdom.

I befriended Claire who loved her brother as much as I loved mine after the kidnapping incident. We understood each other immediately because we share the same worries… That's why I tried to hook her up with my brother but that didn't work out. I probably should've known. I would do the same if she hooked me up with her brother. Cid if I recall his name was. A mediocre boy who doesn't stand out at all.

Sherry is… a sweet girl and she was certainly devoted to my brother and he may hide it but I believe my brother likes her too! He treated her nicer than any other girls. Besides me of course. Currently she's the best option for my brother but due to her being a commoner it may be hard for her to marry him.

But the other day… my father informed me that he and King Klaus planned to have Iris and Claude engaged. I protested to the king directly but… he told me that the current political climate of the kingdom is unstable with the emergence of Shadow Garden and the Cult of Diablos and thus he needs us to unite. And the best way to do that is to tie my brother to Iris. I was forced to agree. This is all Iris' fault for being an idiot at politics.

My brother… he didn't seem to mind being betrothed with Iris… but I noticed him pausing when I mentioned Sherry. Brother… You need to make up your mind or… you'll regret it after you lost her.

I don't care about my own happiness. Only my brother's. He has worked too hard to protect me from that monster, Necromancer, who kidnapped me years ago. My memory is blurred but I recall that back then black blemishes appeared on my skin while I was playing on my father's office and it scared my maid. I don't remember what happened later up until that monster chased me across the city.

My blemishes have disappeared but… I doubt it wouldn't come back.

I know what those black blemishes are… they are signs of Demonic Possession. Once you've caught that curse, you're as good as dead to the world. Claire is the only one I know who had the same experience…and worries. We both know we won't be long for this world. That's why both of us devoted our short lives to ensure a happy future for our beloved brothers so they can be happy without us.

I really want to see my brother getting married… and be as happy as father and mother…

"Ughhh!!!" I fell down again as the pain grows again in my chest.

"Charlotte!?" Mother exclaimed as they stopped running.

"I'm okay! I only tripped!" I lied through my teeth.

"Charlotte. I know you're worried about your brother but don't let those thoughts distract you! Come on!" Father said as he helped me get up before we resumed our escape, passing through knights fighting against assassins and avoiding fire, explosions and flying debris while following the Shadow Garden members.

Eventually we meet up with my brother outside. He's injured but fine. Another Shadow Garden member with brown hair flowing out of her hood is taking care of his wounds. I wonder if they are close.

"Good work, 626." The brown haired Shadow Garden member addressed the white haired one when she delivered her report.

"Charl! Ughh..! I'm glad you're okay." My brother called out to me despite his pain.

"Charl?" I ignored him as I turned my back on him.

Brother… I'm sorry… You've done so much for me… But I… I can only drag you down and…

Perhaps… from now on… I should avoid you… Perhaps even drive you away… so you wouldn't miss me when I'm gone.

Author's Note:

Yup. She got Possession. It was in the plans and I almost forgot about it. We'll see where she'll go from here.

PS: The part where she thought she got possession in the past was when she played with ink. (Basically classic Eminence in Shadow misunderstanding)

"N-No. One of our spies sent to monitor her just foolishly kidnapped her when she saw the young lady having black stains on her skin due to playing with ink and thought she showed early signs of Demonic Possession. Now we have no idea what to do with her."

Chapter 43: The War Begins
Chapter 43: The War Begins

*BOOM BOOM BOOM*

Multiple explosions occurred in the sky, sending shockwaves to the ground that sends all audience of the Bushin Festival running. Ughh… My body's still hurting and the shaking ain't helping. My vision's getting blurry and I'm struggling to stay awake.

"What the hell's going on!?"

"Those ain't fireworks! Those are magic!"

"It's a terrorist attack!"

"I saw King Oriana murdering King Midgar!"

"What has the world gone to!?"

I ignored the people and their screaming and mumbling… as I saw my… the main body's sister avoiding me. What did I do? Is she mad about something? Or is she going through a phase?

Oh, she's clutching her chest, as if enduring pain. Is she hurt? That shouldn't stop her from glomping me and shattering my… the main body's bones usually.

I should ignore it but… I can't help but worry. I'm sure the main body would share the same sentiment.

"Nu."

"Yes?"

"Can you… help her?" I asked for her help sincerely, hoping she would agree.

"Very well." She agreed in an instant. That was easier than I thought.

"Claude." My father called out to me.

"Can I ask you how you're associated with a group of known criminals?" My father asked.

"Husband! This is not the right time nor the place!" My mother protested.

How should I answer him? Hmm…. As I was contemplating, he sighed.

"Haaah… You're always doing stuff on your own. I understand that you're doing this for Charlotte's sake but you need to remember that we care about you too, Claude. Especially Charlotte." She just walked away from me though.

"I want you to please put some trust in us. We're your family. Please… rely on us! Tell us what burdens you! Don't carry it on your own or it'll destroy you!" He advised me with a concerned face. I didn't reply him.

I walked towards Charlotte, Mr. Claude's beloved sister. He's worried about something and I have a bad feeling about this. I must check her out.

"Miss Charlotte." I called out to her.

"What do you want?"

"Are you injured anywhere? If so, let me--"

"I'm fine! I don't need your help!"

That's not a normal reaction. She's hiding something. As I thought.

"You have Demonic Possession, don't you?" I whispered to her ear.

"!!" She's startled. So I was right.

"Fear not. Shadow Garden has the means to help you."

"How?"

"There are three individuals within Shadow Garden who are capable of curing Possession."

"What!?" That got her attention.

"And we offer you healing."

"How do I know you're telling me the truth?" She asked with suspicion.

I lowered my hood and showed my face to her. She seemed to recognize me.

"You're… Nicoletta? I thought you're dead!"

"That was once my name. My name is Nu now. I was once a victim of Demonic Possession just like you. My family threw me away and declared me dead. I was rescued and healed by Shadow Garden. That's how I'm here."

"I see… So you're saying you're gonna heal me in exchange for something? Alright. What do you want?"

"We already had help from your brother so we can't possibly ask more out of you. After you're healed, you're free to go."

"My brother…? Helped you?"

"Yes. He has been a valuable ally to Shadow Garden for some time now. He helped us a lot with the school incident and he even discovered the Possession in Rose before we did."

"Princess Rose too!?"

"Indeed. But she has been healed. So will you."

She contemplates on her answer for few seconds before answering.

"Then… let's discuss another terms…" She said.

"Oh? What do you want?"

"For so long… I've been so helpless. I asked my brother to teach me swordsmanship so he doesn't have to carry his burden alone. But back in the school incident, I was still as helpless as ever against Necromancer. I… I need more power!!"

"I see. Then…"

"Yes… I want to--"

*BOOM BOOM BOOM*

Colorful explosions filled the sky above the Royal Capital but the shockwaves they created let the people know that they were not fireworks but the result of a battle between gods.

Beneath the explosions, two groups of people clad in black clashed in battle. They were the Shadow Garden and the Reaper Squad.

Alpha engaged a tall member of the Reaper Squad whose distinguishing feature amongst the Reaper Squad is that he wore enchanted mythril armor and wields a sword made from greenish metal unknown to her.

Alpha's magic and talents surpasses his but he made up for his weakness with skills he gained from experience and the Artifacts he wielded.

"So you're the infamous No. 001 that I heard so much about from my master." The man said while his blade is locked with Alpha's.

"My name is Alpha, Gil, the first of the Seven Wraiths. Or should I say… Gilfried, the commander of Everick's knights." Alpha replied.

"Ha! So you found out! As expected of the leader of the Seven Shades!" Gilfried laughed as they both disengaged and jumped back.

"My master will reward me greatly if I return you to his side. Don't make this harder for yourself, No 001! Surrender and you may just receive his mercy!" He declared.

"How absurd." Alpha said as she charged forward and they engage in back and forth slashing and parrying.

Princess Alexia… I completely understand how you feel. I'm sorry but… we have to do this to you and your kingdom… in order to protect what's precious to us. Thought Sherry as she engaged Alexia in combat. The mask she wore and Alexia's own rage made Alexia couldn't recognize her.

Alexia, filled with grief and anger, recklessly charged and attacked Sherry's short figure, uncaring of any and all consequences. Sherry held back and only fired warning shots out of pity for the grieving princess.

Please. Don't fight anymore. I don't want to hurt you. You still have to take care of Cid. Thought Sherry as she blocked another one of Alexia's attacks with her barrier.

"You monsters! Why won't you diee!!?" Shouted Alexia angrily as she filled her sword with magic, causing it to be enveloped by pinkish red aura.

Isn't that!? Thought Sherry as Alexia's sword destroyed her barrier and caused a massive gash on Sherry's torso while also sending her crashing against the wall.

"Ughh… I didn't expect her to use Iris' technique." Sherry muttered as she stood back up and began healing her wounds with a healing spell.

"I won't let you!" Alexia shouted as she lunged towards her enemy.

"I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to hurt you." Sherry said as she fired lightning spell towards Alexia, stopping her charge and electrocuting her.

"HYAAAAAAGHHH!!" Alexia shouted in agony as she fell to the ground.

She tried to stand back up only to stop as she saw her enemy already stood in front of her.

This is it… I'm sorry sis… Thought Alexia as she braced herself to meet death while glaring defiantly at her enemy straight at the eerie mask her enemy wore.

To her surprise, her enemy ignored her completely and walked away to engage the Shadow Garden members in combat, showing less mercy to them.

"What's… going on…?" Alexia muttered as she regained her senses and fled the scene.

"HAAAAAAHHHH!!!" Shouted Iris as she unleashed massive red flames from her Artifact sword while swinging it towards Beta, who dodged it almost effortlessly.

"Calm down, Princess Iris! We are not your enemy!"

"It's all your fault! You brought your war to our peaceful kingdom and murdered my father! Dieee!!!!" Shouted Iris as she unleashed another destructive slash, which destroyed several buildings.

"Tch. She's out of her mind now. And here I thought she would be more bearable than her sister." Muttered Beta as she dodged another slash.

Killing her isn't an option. It will cause further chaos to the kingdom. But at the rate she's destroying everything in her blind rage—Thought Beta before being interrupted by another slash.

I must knock her out. But with the Artifact she's wielding, it's not gonna be easy. Haaah… What a pain but… babysitting is work too, Beta.

"Not a step further, Rose Oriana." Glen said with a stern voice while pointing his sword towards Rose, who was about to join the fight.

"But I can fight, Sir Glen!" Rose said.

"Fight against us, you mean?" Glen said.

"No! You have to believe me! I was as surprised as you when my father--"

"Save your excuses for the trial, Rose Oriana!" Shouted Glen, unmoved by her plea as other knights from the Knight Order approached her with magic suppressing cuffs, intending on arresting her.

"Very well… I surrender." Rose said as she dropped her sword and put offered her hands to the knights. But before the grinning knights could place the cuffs on her, they were stopped by a slash from Glen himself.

"AAAGHH!! What is the meaning of this, Sir Glen!?" Shouted one of the knights whose hand has been sliced off.

"I know your true affiliation the moment you showed those disgusting grins, Cultists. You will not take her!" Declared Glen as he stood protectively in front of Rose.

"Oh my. It seems that you guys are having some trouble with apprehending the princess." A calm male voice said as he entered the room through the door nonchalantly. The knights seem to back off as they saw him.

When Glen and Rose turned to see the source of the voice, they saw a grey haired wolf Beastkin man with squinted eyes wearing black robes similar to the Reaper Squad, although he didn't cover his face which allowed them to see his nonchalant smile. He wielded no weapon at all, in contrast to other Reaper Squad members.

"Who are you!?" Shouted Rose.

"I'm Adra, one of the Seven Wraiths. Pleased to make your acquaintance." He said as he suddenly charged and knocked Glen away with an elbow to the chest, which sent him away from the ruined VIP booth.

"Tch! Strong!" Rose said as she took her sword back and adopted her stance.

"You would do well to surrender now. I'd hate to harm a pitiful thing like you." The beastkin said, not adopting any stance in response to Rose's own.

"You underestimate me, Necromancer's minion. I'll show you my true power!!" Rose shouted as turquoise aura envelops her.

"Haaah… What a handful little thing you are. Almost reminds me of my sister." He said as he blocked the princess' lunge with a swipe of his claws.

Author's Note:

Hey lookie here. I managed to finish a chapter with what little time I had this week (4th December 2023 at the time of this writing). Decided to focus on smaller battles happening below the sky in this chapter before writing Shadow VS Necromancer again. Also, another Seven Wraiths member introduced!

Chapter 44: The Second Encounter
Chapter 44: The Second Encounter

*BOOM BOOM BOOM*

More sounds of explosions echoes in the cloudy sky. Two combatants fought in the air, their weapons and magic clashed, generating mighty shockwaves that brought chaos to the entire Royal Capital of Midgar. The citizens looked on with both awe and fear at both of our powers.

Seriously, this setting is so dope! And I have you to thank for preparing this stage, my beloved nemesis, Necromancer. I was indecisive about how I want to end this tournament arc, but you provided the answer for me. It's like you know exactly what I needed and came to deliver!

You're still too stingy though.

My sword clashes with his staff once again and… hm? What is this foreign magic invading me? It's gone as soon as I noticed it. Where did it go?

He then shoots the familiar fireballs again and I dodged them easily. If this is the same trick as before, I'm gonna be so disappo— Oh? Instead of gathering like before, the fireballs changed directions to chase me from multiple angles.

The number of fireballs keeps increasing as he keeps shooting them. I sliced some of them with my sword to cause them to explode before reaching me but he just kept shooting more. Obviously I won't let myself get overwhelmed by this. I know what to do.

I flew in some random direction while dodging the fireballs, slowly but subtly getting closer to him before suddenly flying to his direction.

When I reached him, I gave him a smirk before flying away at higher speed than his fireballs could detect, causing the fireballs to fly towards him.

"You think my magic exists to trap me?" He said ominously while snapping his fingers. Hm? It's that foreign magic again and…

I suddenly found myself surrounded by the very fireballs I dodged earlier. So that foreign magic… it teleported me to his place and him to mine, essentially switching our places so that I'll be the one bombarded by his fireballs. Clever trick, nemesis.

I could slice them all at high speed before they reach me but instead I tried to copy his magic and created a purplish barrier surrounding me, protecting me from the fireballs.

*BOOM BOOM BOOM*

Explosions surrounds me but with this barrier I am completely unharmed.

As smoke from the explosions cleared out, I emerged unharmed surrounded by my barrier.

"Hoo… So you've copied another one of my spells." He said.

"Hmph. It was easy." I said, despite knowing that it's harder than I implied. Seriously. His spells are so sophisticated that I can learn so much from studying how they work by observing the flow of magical energy in his spells. I'm almost tempted to call him sensei.

"Then how about this?" He raised his hand to the sky, expelling a suspiciously large amount of magic and thunder started rumbling.

"This spell. I've seen it." I said as I rushed to interrupt him with a slash, which he blocked with his staff.

But surely he won't use this spell again if he knew that I am aware of its weakness. As if to confirm my suspicion, lightning shoots towards me from the sky and I flew away at high speed to dodge it.

I knew it. Unlike that time with the phantom in Lindwurm, he can control the weather and rain down lightning without needing to concentrate so I cannot interrupt the spell like last time.

Several more lightning shoots at me and I dodged them all. The lightning struck the buildings beneath us, causing destruction and mayhem wherever they struck.

"You may have your weather controlling magic but I can just do this!" I exclaimed as I gathered magical energy in my hand, which formed purple spiral.

"A brute force then?" He muttered as he watched me throwing my magic to the sky, causing all the gathered cloud to disperse, suddenly revealing a clear and cloudless sky.

But what my magic revealed is not just the sun and blue sky, but also… a black hole with greenish light gathering around it like a spiral. I sensed him sending magic to the sky earlier but I should've known it wasn't just for his weather controlling magic considering how much magic he expelled.

So he has already prepared his ultimate attack, Armageddon, which he used against my I Am Atomic when we first fought.

"You're going for the climax already?" I said as I saw the black hole expanding, aiming it at the city.

"It will not be over for us. But for the city however…" He said ominously, implying that if I dodged, the city will be destroyed. He can't be serious about destroying the city! That's too much even for me!

I mean…. How can we leave a legend if there are none to tell the tale!? Isn't that the whole point of this show?

"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked him while grinning fearlessly.

"What do you mean?" He replied.

"Isn't there something in this city that is precious to you?" You know? Your dungeon? Also the precious stage you just provided for the both of us? It'll be a shame to blow them all up so fast!

"…." My question seems to have made him hesitate. Yes! You get it, don't you?

"Isn't there something in this city that is precious to you?" My nemesis, Shadow, said.

Two familiar faces flashed in my mind the moment he said that, making me hesitate until I realized how much I don't want to lose them.

"You're right. There are things that are precious to me in this city." I answered my sworn nemesis, who guessed correctly what I hold dear in my heart even when I didn't acknowledge them.

I cancelled my Armageddon spell after realizing that.

I applaud you, my nemesis. For seeing through me… For knowing me better than I knew myself.

For seeing through my… weakness… weakness that gets in the way of my villainy… weakness that I must soon correct.

"I applaud you, my nemesis. For seeing through me. For that, I shall reward you with this." I said as I snapped my fingers and the world around us changed.

Perv Asshat escaped the city along with King Oriana on a common carriage instead of the kingly and decorated carriage reserved for Oriana royalty in order to escape incognito.

In addition to the chaos brought by the titanic battle in the sky and the clash between Shadow Garden and the Reaper Squad, the city is also attacked by a horde of undead warriors emerging from the underground maze after they broke through the barricades guarded by the Knight Order.

The Knight Order personnel are now too occupied with evacuating civilians and fighting off the undead horde to bother noticing a suspicious carriage escaping from the city.

"Hmph. Lord Necromancer is well prepared. With the Knight Order busy fighting his undead monsters, we can escape undetected. Everything went smoothly, hasn't it, your highness?" Said Perv.

"Not completely. My daughter hasn't come into our hands yet." Replied the king.

"I had my agents disguise as members the Knight Order too. I'm sure they will arrest her and bring her to us soon." Perv replied.

"Not enough. Not enough at all. You should've asked for Lord Necromancer's assistance."

"I cannot do that! I already owe him too much! My achievements will be overshadowed by him if I keep asking for everything out of him!" Exclaimed Perv.

"Hmph. No matter. Sooner or later, she will return to us." Declared the mad king while grinning ominously.

Alpha engaged Gilfried in a high speed swordfight. Slash after slash, parry after parry, it looked like both of them are evenly matched but even with all his experience and Artifacts, Gilfried slowly starts to lose ground as the battle goes on.

A moment of weakness is all it takes for Alpha to launch a kick that sent him colliding with a building and through the wall.

"Urghh… it seems that age has caught up to me." Said Gilfried while groaning.

Alpha soon entered the building he was in through the wall he went through and smiled triumphantly.

"Perhaps now it is time for you to give up." Alpha said while pointing her black sword at him.

"I see. You want information, eh?"

"Indeed. You are Necromancer's closest aide, yes? Rest assured that Shadow Garden will make you spill all that you know about him."

"Heh heh heh. I'll become an undead monster before then." Declared Gilfried fearlessly.

"…." Alpha was unable to retort as she knew that the Necromancer have a way to prevent captured Reaper Squad members from spilling information during interrogation by remotely turning them into zombies.

As she was contemplating on how to take Gilfried into custody, she felt Shadow's aura disappear.

"What!?" She exclaimed as she looked to the sky and found the lack of Shadow's presence along with the lack of explosions from his battle against his mortal enemy.

"Heh. So he's gone and done it." Gilfried said.

"What do you mean!?" Exclaimed Alpha angily.

"You shall see it soon! HAAAA!!!" Shouted Gilfried as he launched himself at Alpha with a slash after he finished healing himself. Alpha hastily blocked the surprise attack and was thrown away by the impact of his attack but she managed to properly land on the rooftop of a building.

"What is the meaning of this!?" She exclaimed after she sensed that the Necromancer's aura also disappeared.

Author's Note:

I'm back! Finished with the irl stuff I must do this week. I'll probably be back to publishing chapters daily if I'm still up to it, at least until next year where I'll likely get busier and releases may become weekly.

And yes, in Iris' mind, these two freaks started a war that killed her dad and brought much chaos to the kingdom.

Chapter 45: Beat Blaze Shadow
Chapter 45: Beat Blaze Shadow

"Hm?" We are teleported to another location… no… this is just like back in Lindwurm. We are in a completely different dimension. All around us is nothing but lava. A sea of blazing lava as far as the eye can see. I had to put a layer of barrier around my skin to protect myself from the intense heat and poured more magic to my slime suit in order to prevent it from melting.

"Welcome to my world, Shadow. Here, everything is as I want it to be." He declared.

How terrifying you are, my nemesis. I've focused my training on making myself strong and you went ahead and create cool spells like this. I almost want to call you sensei. Almost!

With a wave of his hand, a wave of lava emerged, threatening to consume me. I've always wanted to try swimming in lava but doing it in his lava is a risk I don't want to take. Who knows? Maybe there are lava sharks around.

I flew away from the lava wave and more waves emerged all around me. I tried flying up to avoid them but a rain of molten rocks is raining down around me. Naturally I avoided them all, destroying some of them with a slash of my sword. Heh heh heh. This is so much fun!

But if this keeps up, I'll be at a disadvantage. Maintaining the barrier around my skin whilst maintaining my slime suit in this environment is taking so much magic energy. Though I'm not the only one who expends a large amount of magical energy in this fight.

I swiped the sea of lava with my sword, sending a wave of lava at him. But as expected, the lava didn't harm him. I'm sure he didn't even feel all these heat either.

"It's useless. As I said before, my magic is not meant to trap me." He said mockingly.

I flew closer to him but… everytime I drew closer to him, he teleported away. He sent more lava waves at me with every teleportation.

He sent another wave of lava and instead of dodging, this time I… surfed through the lava wave with a black surfboard made of slime that I reinforced so it would survive contact with the lava.

"Ho ho ho. Not bad." He said mockingly while clapping his hands.

I put my hand on the lava and tried to inject it with magic but… my magic was rejected. His control over this dimension is absolute.

"This is MY domain! Everything obeys only me!" He exclaimed as he created a shark made of lava and sent it my way.

I knew it wasn't wise to swim in his lava.

I sliced the shark apart as it attempts to bite me but it quickly reforms itself. I jumped off the lava wave to dodge the shark's bite.

As I floated in the air, several lava sharks jumped out of the sea of lava to try biting me.

With a single swipe of my sword, I diced all of them, sending them back to the lava.

"Is that all?" I taunted him, wanting him to show more of his tricks.

"How about this?" He said as he held an open palm in my direction and sent…. Holy shit! A pyroclastic flow! I dodged the huge wave of black hot cloud coming my way. A deadly natural disaster conjured by his magic is bound to be dangerous. Even inhaling the gas is risky. But I can use this.

He kept conjuring more and more pyroclastic waves and I kept dodging, using the cloud from the pyroclastic flows as smoke screen to mask my steps as I slowly approached him silently.

I eventually moved at high speed and appeared behind him, a slash of my sword blocked by his staff.

"I knew you would be there. How predictable, nemesis." He said mockingly.

Well, backstabbing seems to get old by now. I need to do something fresh. And I know just what to do.

Without disengaging from him, I released a burst of magical energy and pushed him downwards into the lava.

I watched as he fell into the lava but I know this isn't the end. This is his lava. The lava sharks won't attack him either.

Few seconds after he dropped into the lava, he emerged out of the lava… as a giant version of him made of lava.

"It's useless! This is my domain!" He exclaimed, his voice louder due to his size.

He then vomits a stream of lava out of his mouth. Instead of dodging, I stepped into the stream of lava he vomited and ran towards him.

I put magic into my feet and caused a burst which sent me flying straight into his gigantic skull-like face.

I plunged my sword between his eye sockets and injected more magic to the sword, causing a burst of magic to drive deeper into his skull, bursting behind his head.

Ignoring the damage in his skull, the Necromancer raised his hand to try and grab me. I simply stepped in his hand to dodge the slow moving hand.

I sliced his lava form apart with high speed slashes, revealing his true self inside the head, slightly damaged from the magic burst I gave to his lava form's skull.

Not giving him a chance to retaliate, I stabbed my blade into his chest and… instead of blood, what came out of his body is snow and a burst of cold air, completely contrasting the current environment.

The cold air eventually envelops the whole place, turning it from a sea of lava into a winter wasteland surrounded by harsh blizzard.

I had to adjust the barrier coating my skin to protect me from cold instead of heat in order to adapt to the change in environment.

The Necromancer that I stabbed disappeared when the environment changed.

I stepped on the snow coated ground, slightly relieved that I no longer have to constantly fly.

I turned behind me to see a giant spear made of ice emerged from the blizzard, flying towards me. I sidestepped the spear before noticing another spear coming from another direction.

The blizzard obscured my vision slightly but I managed dodged several more ice spears before finally spotting his silhouette in the distance, obscured by the blizzard.

I decided to show off a little bit of magic I developed myself by studying the Mist Dragon's breath.

I inhaled deeply, focusing my magic in my lungs, converting it into fire element before blowing it out of my mouth. A stream of fire came out of my mouth towards the direction of his silhouette, engulfing his form in flames. But it was not the real him. It was merely an illusion.

"A dragon's breath, eh? Impressive. But can you find me?" His voice echoes in the air.

I saw another silhouette of him but as I tried to take a step closer, I found my shoes frozen solid. My slime outfit also becomes heavier and harder to be molded into shapes and density I desired.

"Haah… Even the frozen environment won't make it easy for me." I muttered as I poured more magic into my slime suit, breaking the ice and protecting it from freezing further.

I sent another fire breath at the direction of the silhouette, dispelling the illusion. Another spear emerged and I slice it apart with my sword.

"Hmph. This is getting repetitive. Playtime is over!" I exclaimed as I gathered magical energy for my ultimate move. My purple energy envelops a large area around me.

"I… AM…" I said before I was interrupted by the Necromancer finally showing himself with a hand coated in a black aura. I cancelled my ultimate magic to dodge the dangerous rot magic.

"Now, you're mine." I said as I coated my sword in flame and bisected him. This time, I drew blood.

His body, now in two pieces, fell to the ground, coating the snow red with his blood.

"Playtime isn't over yet." He said with a clear voice as if he wasn't bisected at all before red tentacle like things emerged from his wounds and reattached his bisected body.

I moved to slash him with my sword before he fully reattached his body. I hit him… but…

"It was only an afterimage." He said as he suddenly appeared behind me, sending his rot magic on my back.

"Aaaagh!!!" I screamed in pain as I jumped away. I have high pain tolerance but his rot magic is damn painful. My magic defense and even the slime covering my back evaporated, completely defenseless against that magic. Also, stealing my technique and line. Very clever.

I kept jumping away from him as he kept chasing me with that rot magic of his while healing the wounds on my back. Ow! Ow! Even being skinned alive wouldn't be this painful!

Like a game of tag, he now becomes the "it". But I have no intention of being chased forever, you know?

As I ran and he kept chasing, I suddenly stopped and began gathering magic around my body, converting it into fire element and unleashed it in a large burst of flames which envelops him.

The burst of flames knocked him away, though it wouldn't burn him much, not in this blizzard.

Before he recovers, I moved at high speed and stabbed him with my flaming sword. Blood came out of his wound… along with a spark of electricity.

"Another change in element, eh?" I muttered as I moved away before he exploded in a burst of electricity. The bright light from his explosion also brought change to the scenery. This time we are flying above mountains surrounded by tornadoes and lightning.

"Hmm. If I'm not careful, I could be blown away." I muttered as I poured magic to keep my position steady and prevent myself from being blown away by the harsh wind. He always finds a way to make me expend more magic than I'm comfortable with.

As I expected, several lightning strikes rained down upon me. Dodging them was made harder with the wind from the tornadoes constantly interrupting my flight. To top it all off, the damn Necromancer shots lightning from his hands. Hooray for more projectiles to dodge!

I tried flying towards him but he just blew me away by surrounding himself with a tornado.

Being blown away caused me to be struck by some lightning.

"Aghh!" I grunted as lightning from the sky struck me.

This is getting me nowhere. I must destroy this dimension with a huge bang. Using I Am Atomic is out of the question because he can just attack me with his rot magic before I can finish the technique. But I know a technique that can do the trick.

You know what they say. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Heh heh heh.

I raised my hand to the sky and began creating a black sphere out of magic. The sphere was surrounded by purplish lights forming a spiral.

"You…!" He muttered hatefully as he tried to attack me but was blown away by the chaotic force generated by the black hole above me. This is the advantage in his technique that my I Am Atomic did not have. I grinned as I watched him being blown away.

"I hope you enjoy your present, Necromancer! MEGIDDO!!!" I shouted as I aimed the black hole towards him, causing it to burst in a huge cone, shattering the dimension.

Author's Note:

As you probably guessed, the title of this chapter is a reference of Tekken 7's OST, Heat Haze Shadow. Even the lava environment was a reference to Heihachi VS Kazuya in Tekken 7. I listened to that song while writing this chapter. It's a banger and fits an epic battle between rivals and sworn enemies.

Chapter 46: I Am Become Death
Chapter 46: I Am Become Death

*CLANG*

"Gaaahh!!!" Grunted an elf man after being pushed back by Beatrix.

"Dammit… After all of that… you still…" Arrinoth muttered as he slowly stood back up to face his opponent.

"There is something I must ask you." Beatrix said.

"What do you want?" He replied cynically.

"Have you seen an elf girl who looks like me?"

"You asked that last time we met!! You still don't remember me, do you!? Grrr….!" Arrinoth exclaimed, all his training and the Artifacts he acquired from the Necromancer didn't give him enough edge against Beatrix, his sworn rival.

"Really? My apologies." Beatrix said as she bowed her head.

"GRRR!!!! I'LL MAKE YOU REMEMBER, YOU ARROGANT BITCH!!" Arrinoth shouted angrily as he prepared to charge forth before being interrupted by a rumble…

"Ughh…." Grunted Rose as she was forced into her knees with her rapier broken to pieces by her opponent's claws. Even Glen joining the fight didn't help much. The wolf beastkin they were fighting is just that strong.

"Now. Be a good girl and come with me, okay? Or I'm gonna have to hurt you a bit more." Adra, the wolf beastkin said with a nonchalant tone.

"Tell me…" Rose said in between gasps and heavy breaths.

"What have you done to my father!?" She shouted with hateful eyes.

"Hmm… I'm not supposed to say anything but since I'm feeling generous… Simply put, Lord Necromancer brainwashed the king."

"Necromancer…!?" Rose exclaimed.

"So that monster… is the one responsible!?" Glen shouted.

"You said too much, Adra." Said a demonic voice from a short masked figure who appeared behind the beastkin.

"Oops. You caught me, Acolyte. Hee hee hee." Adra laughed it off as if it was a joke.

"Not another word. You will finish your task and--" The Acolyte was interrupted by a rumble, followed by the sound of glass crashing and loud explosion that came after.

*BOOOOOOOM*

Out of nowhere a huge explosion occurred in the sky above the Midgar Royal Capital. Every single individual in the city witnessed the huge explosion in awe no matter who they are.

The explosion seemingly appeared out of a tear in space itself, shaking the whole city in the process.

People with keen eyes could discern a black robed figure being blown away by the explosion towards the mountains outside the capital. Alpha was one of them.

"Shadow…" She muttered while smiling as she watched the explosion in the sky. Her opponent, Gilfried, is doing the same, but with a different emotion.

"Lord Necromancer!!" He shouted in disbelief.

The figure of Necromancer disappeared in the distance, presumably crashed on the mountains. Another black robed figure emerged from the huge hole in the sky and jumped to chase the Necromancer as the huge hole in the sky created by the explosion slowly closed itself.

"Heh. It looks like your master has been defeated as he was destined to be." Alpha said while smiling.

"This is not over yet!" Shouted Gilfried.

"How is it not over yet?" Alpha replied while smirking.

Her confident smile was broken the moment she saw green magic enveloping the whole mountain that the Necromancer was thrown into.

"No… that's…!?" Exclaimed Alpha in utter disbelief.

"That's how. Heh heh heh."

After I launched Megiddo and destroyed the sub-dimension, we both emerged in the real world. I jumped out of the sub-dimension's hole to chase after the Necromancer, who has been thrown into a mountain outside the capital by the explosion.

I floated in the air when I found him, lying in a crater under a pile of broken trees. I watched him, trying to find any sign of life in him whilst being wary of more traps. Knowing him, this could be a trap too.

And I was right as I detected four floating swords chasing after me.

"Heh. You said you wouldn't use them against a worthy foe. It seems you're out of options, Necromancer." I taunted him while smirking as I dodged and deflected the floating runed swords with my own sword.

The Necromancer still didn't move as I entertained myself with his swords. One of the swords unleashed fireball, another unleashed ice spears and the third, a lightning bolt. I dodged and deflected the spells but the fourth sword did something unexpected.

It casted a gravity spell on me, making my already exhausted body unable to move.

"Ughh… Using Megiddo took a toll on me. That's what I get for copying such a huge spell without mastering it properly I guess." I muttered as I fell to the ground, struggling to get up.

The four swords stabbed my torso from four directions. I had to move my vital organs away with magic to avoid having them being stabbed, though it took another toll on me.

With me trapped, the Necromancer rose back up slowly and… began copying my own technique in retaliation. His green magic envelops the whole mountain.

"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, don't you agree? Nemesis?" He said as he poured his magic into the spell as I watched while grinning.

"I AM BECOME DEATH!! THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS!!"

Didn't expect him to quote the man himself! Holy shit!

The spell was complete and a huge nuclear level explosion destroyed the whole mountain we're in.

"Shadow!!" Shouted Alpha as she witnessed a green explosion destroyed the mountain that Shadow and the Necromancer are in.

She would've been relieved and even appreciated the beauty of the explosion if it had her master's signature purple hue. But it was green, the color of the dreaded Necromancer's magic.

"Ha ha ha ha! As expected of my lord! Your lord Shadow is doomed!" Shouted Gilfried as he basked in his master's glorious power.

Ignoring him, Alpha jumped towards the direction of the explosion.

"Heh… It's about time we retreated as well." Said Gilfried as he too left the scene.

"Oh my. It seems that Lord Necromancer has won." Said Adra nonchalantly as if talking about the weather while looking at the mushroom cloud created by the explosion in the mountains outside the capital.

The wind and the shockwave from the explosion eventually reached the capital, causing various damages to the buildings and several fatalities.

"Let's retreat." The Acolyte said with barely disguised concern in her voice.

"What about Princess Rose?" Adra asked.

"We never actually promised to capture her for Perv Asshat so it's fine." The Acolyte said as she left the scene.

"Well, alright." Adra followed suit, leaving Rose and Glen in bewilderment.

"That explosion… it destroyed an entire mountain! What just… happened?" Rose asked.

"It's almost like the explosion that occurred in the middle of the capital during the night Princess Alexia escaped from Zenon. But that time the explosion had a purple hue and Princess Alexia confirmed it was done by Shadow." Glen answered.

"But that green magic…!" Rose exclaimed.

"It might've been Necromancer's doing this time. Haaah… What monsters…" Glen said tiredly.

"Sir Glen… I…"

"Don't worry. I'll vouch for your innocence. Let's get out of here." Glen said.

Ow ow ow. That hurt. Tanking that attack was difficult. If I didn't practice that barrier spell since our first encounter, I probably would've died from this. But it was worth watching that huge explosion up close. It was beautiful.

It blew me several kilometres away from the explosion and sent me crashing against another mountain though.

My nemesis… no… my best friend, the Necromancer. I welcome you to the Become the Nuke Club. I'd clap my hands if my entire body wasn't so tired and hurt.

"Ha ha ha. That was… awesome… Ha ha… Ow! Even laughing hurts!"

Seriously. I haven't had this much fun since… forever. That was such an epic boss fight!

Though… I suppose I should consider this my defeat? I mean, he did beat my ass… with my own technique no less.

I'll give this victory to you, my friend. I'll get you back soon.

"Shadow!!" Ah. Alpha's here.

"Shadow! Are you alright!?" She shouted desperately with tears flowing on her cheeks.

"I've… never been…" better. I said weakly with a smile. My words seemed to have horrified her though… for some reason.

"Please… don't do things on your own! We are here for you!" She tearfully pleaded as she held my hand in hers. Is she angry because I had too much fun on my own? I understand. The Necromancer was your old playmate after all.

"I'm… Cough…" I tried to say some words of reassurance but failed and coughed out blood instead. Ow, my lungs! I need to fix the positions of my organs soon.

"Please hold still! I'll take you back to Alexandria!" She shouted as she began carrying me in a princess carry. Huh, I've been carried like this a lot lately. I know it's only been two times but that's a lot! But no matter. That's better than being carried like a sack of potatoes.

"Lord Shadow!"

"Boss man!!"

Ah. Beta and Delta. Oh! Even Gamma's here. I'm glad you guys care about me but please stop crying so much. I'm not dying you know.

"Yeah I confirmed that Shadow is still alive. I caught his scent along with the scent of several Shadow Garden members on their retreat. From his scent, I detected that he was still breathing." Said Adra.

"And you didn't track them? We could've found their base!" I scolded him.

"Nu-uh! They know how to mask their scent to prevent detection. Their smell disappeared halfway."

"I see." I muttered while clenching my fist. He's untrustworthy but I have no way of confirming that theory.

"You sure we didn't need to retrieve Lord Necromancer?" Asked Adra.

"He has already returned before us. Now leave." I said to him.

"Alright, alright! I won't interrupt your alone time with him, Miss Acolyte." He said nonchalantly as he left the room. I should've known that a beastkin like him would notice my gender even if I tried to hide it. He must've noticed Claude's smell on me too.

No matter. If it means getting that bitch Carmilla or that vixen Yukime away from Claude, let him know.

I entered Claude's private room within the Necromancer's base. He has set up an automatic teleportation spell that activates when his life is in danger which would teleport him here and I need to be here to nurse him back to health.

I see him already disrobed and lying on his bed, unconscious, full of wounds and broken bones. The Tears of Diablos gave him regenerative powers but it was limited to how much magic power he has left. The fact that he couldn't heal himself means that his magic is exhausted after the battle. His condition is now far worse than back then.

The Tears of Diablos gave him great power but at the cost of his magic control, which made him expends more magical energy casting spells than he otherwise would have. He should've trained a bit more before facing Shadow once again but we had no choice back then. Shadow is that much of a menace.

It saddens me that I was unable to help him when he fought our mutual enemy Shadow. I was powerless. Still powerless.

I want more… I need more power… When I am strong enough… I shall present his head to you… my beloved Claude.

I walked to his side and moved my face closer to his.

"You don't have to do this alone, Claude. I want to help you." I whispered as I gave him a kiss on the lips.

"I shall kill him for you, Claude. I swear it. Hee hee hee…"

Author's Note:

Isn't it ironic that Claude doesn't want to deal with a yandere and yet he created a yandere with his carrot and stick method in training her?

And everyone considered Necromancer as the winner because he struck the last blow but looking at their conditions in the aftermath, you can see who really won even if barely so.

Also, I almost have the Necromancer name the technique "I am Oppenheimr" but then I remembered Oppenheimr have a quote that fits the Necromancer more.

Chapter 47: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum
Chapter 47: Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

It's been 2 days since the battle against Shadow Garden in the capital and Claude hasn't woken up yet. I nursed him as much as I can but he needs to recover on his own. While waiting for him to wake up, I read the Midgar newspaper to keep up with the news.

Reading while wearing this mask is no problem for me due to the enchantments on the mask ensuring my comfort and not obstructing both my vision and breath. Let's see what the newspaper have to say.

We successfully assassinated King Midgar and the capital is in chaos politically. King Oriana and Duke Perv successfully escaped to Oriana and the Knight Order managed to subdue the undead hordes with the help of Shadow Garden, though the capital still suffered massive casualties, both civilians and knights alike.

The damages to the capital's infrastructure are massive but Mitsugoshi signed a deal with the royal family to help with the reconstructions.

Normally Iris would take the throne but several nobles, especially the ones from Thirteen Night Blades, opposed it, calling her a mindless brute who is unfit to rule. Her rampage across the capital during the battle, which destroyed several infrastructure and possibly injured and slain many people, supports that notion, reducing her already dwindling popularity even more.

Princess Alexia was considered for the position of queen but she rejected as she supports her sister taking the throne.

To defend Iris' position, the royal family announced her engagement with Claude, though with her dwindling popularity it was decided that she would give up her right to become the monarch and that position would be held by Claude… as Claude had planned. Though I wished he didn't have to marry that princess to become king.

Even this arrangement didn't satisfy the Thirteen Night Blades though because they want someone on the Cult's side to take the throne and thus a civil war might be inevitable, even with the war against Oriana on the horizon.

For now Midgar has been divided into two factions, the Royalist faction, which includes the royal family and several nobles still loyal to them, including Claude's family, and the Anti-Royal faction led by the Thirteen Night Blades and some other nobles who lost faith in the royal family after the king's death.

The inclusion of Claude's family alone made the Thirteen Night Blades wary of the Royalist faction. That's how influential his family is. Not to mention Claude himself is a promising young talent. His family's inclusion alone saved Iris from losing the political battle before it even starts. The upcoming war will decide the fate of Midgar.

For now, the kingdom of Midgar is distracted by their own internal political turmoil that they almost forgot about the battle between Shadow and the Necromancer. Almost no mention of them in the newspaper. Though I'm sure the people won't forget how devastating that battle is even if the media tries to hide it to prevent panic among the masses. The absence of a mountain outside the capital is a glaring evidence of Claude's might after all.

Ah. A section about Rose Oriana. Glen the Lion Beard vouched for her innocence but she is still not trusted and thus she was given a house arrest under the watchful eyes of the Crimson Order. The story about King Oriana being brainwashed by Necromancer is mentioned though it is met with scepticism despite how plausible it is, courtesy of the Cult's propaganda machine. Curse that mutt for running his mouth so carelessly and making the Cult have to intervene. This most likely means less leverage we'll have over Perv Asshat and the Fenrir faction.

"Has Lord Necromancer recovered yet, Acolyte?" A vampire woman named Carmilla asked me. She is one of Claude's Seven Wraiths and formerly a weak ordinary vampire who became stronger after Claude experimented on her. She has become sycophantic towards him ever since, constantly trying to seduce him to gain his favor.

She has black hair tied in a bun behind her head and wore a provocative black dress with a fur scarf along with high heels. Dressed like a harlot, she constantly flaunts her assets to Claude. I wish I could just tear off those ridiculously overinflated breasts of hers.

"Not yet. He is still sleeping. Do not disturb his rest, Carmilla." I answered.

"Hmph. Just how useless can you be!? I thought it was your job to nurse him back to health!" She exclaimed.

"I did what I can. He just needs rest."

"I don't understand why a useless weakling like you get to join the Seven Wraiths. You are unfit for the position!"

"You can take that complaint to Lord Necromancer. I am here because he wills it."

"How did you seduce him, you bitch!?" Ah, she must've heard it from Adra. Hee hee hee.

"Heh. That's for me and Lord Necromancer to know." I teased.

"Tch! This isn't over yet. You won't be his favorite forever. I shall prove my worth to him during the Red Moon. And then I shall have him remove you. And ohh… the things I would do to a little girl like you." She threatened while licking her blood red lips.

"Good luck with that." As if he would listen to a harlot like you.

"Hmph!" She left after failing to intimidate me. Hee hee hee. You're nothing but a side project for him. You're the one who shall be discarded, Carmilla.

Man. It took me some time to heal and rest so I had to disappear for a day. Also took awhile to convince Alpha and the others to leave the matter about the last battle alone. For some reason they thought I'm suffering even though I had so much fun lately. I also had to avoid my sister, who is more enthusiastic about training me than usual somehow.

I took a walk around town to observe the damages caused by our battle. Feels a little sad to see familiar sights being damaged all around but that's life.

Like "Oh, I usually passed through this street everyday but now it's destroyed!" or "I used to frequent this shop a lot! It has many memories but it's in ruins now!" kind of bittersweet feeling. Yup. So much drama and emotions from a single battle. How beautiful life is. I walked around while whistling happily, enjoying life. For some reason people around me are looking at me weirdly though.

I walked the streets aimlessly and found myself in a park. Sometimes Alexia would take me here to spar whenever she's not busy hanging out with her friends. I don't know why my feet took me here but I saw her leaning against a fence whilst being illuminated by the afternoon sun.

Seeing as I have nothing better to do, I walked to approach her. Normally she'd notice my footsteps right away but she's currently distracted somehow.

"Pooch…?" Ah. She noticed me. Wait. Why are you looking at me like you just saw a ghost?

"Hi." I greeted. She immediately glomped me without warning and hugged me tightly.

"Where have you been!? I've been worried sick!! I… My father… my sister… the kingdom… ahh…! AAAAHHH!!!!" She cried. Oh dear. I may not like her very much but it is my policy to be nice to girls especially when they need it so I hug her back and allow her to cry her heart out in my arms.

"It's okay. It's okay." I said while stroking her hair.

"Pooch! Don't you ever disappear from me ever again! That's an order, okay!?" She exclaimed in between sobs.

"Okay, okay. I won't disappear. Geez." Seriously, even you treat me like I almost died. Alpha and the others already did that a lot these past few days, you know? They even told me to rest for a few more days but I'm bored so I decided to take a walk.

After she cried a few seconds in my arms, she calmed down and wiped her tears.

"So… where were you?" She asked with a concerned face.

"I uhh… stayed out of trouble."

"Really? Haahh… I should've known that you're an expert of staying out of trouble sometimes."

"It's my specialty. I want to keep being mediocre after all."

"What about that time at the school? I heard from Rose that you fought bravely against the zombies and was the first to defeat one of them."

"It was an accident."

"Sure it was. Anyway, did you hear the news?"

"About what?"

"Haaah… Typical Pooch. Even after everything that happened, you're still so… relaxed and nonchalant. So unburdened by the troubles of the world. You have no idea how lucky you are Pooch. I'm so envious of you."

"Really? A princess being envious of a lowly son of a baron? That's new."

"I'm serious. Things are about to get ugly in this kingdom. War is coming whether we like it or not. Even though all we wanted was peace…"

"Well, we just need to be prepared for it, don't we?" I said while remembering something from my old world.

"Huh?"

"Si vis pace—Ahem. If you want peace, prepare for war. That sort of thing." I told her an ancient quote from Earth, almost blurted out the words in Latin too.

"What are you saying, Pooch? You're not making any sense."

"It means you need to be strong enough if you want to protect your peace. Otherwise you'll be trampled by those who wanted to destroy it." I explained the meaning of the quote. For a moment she was at a loss for words.

"Hmm… You're surprisingly wise today, Pooch. But… thank you. You're right." She said as she regained her smile as she stepped back from me.

"You're welcome." I said. My words seem to have made her regain her spirits. Good for her I guess.

"I hope you can stay the way you are, Pooch! No matter what, I will protect you!" She said with a final smile before she walked away in high spirits, presumably back to her castle.

Protect me? Why? From what? Is this some kind of code word or some kind of trope I don't understand? That's strange. My trope senses never failed me before. Meh, no matter. I'm sure I'll figure it out someday.

Author's Note:

And so the Bushin Festival arc is finished. What a chaotic ending. This arc is probably the longest arc I've written so far.

Another member of the Seven Wraiths is introduced. A total of 6 have been introduced so far, although Mundane Mann has been eliminated so his seat is currently empty.

Also them Cid x Alexia scene. Alexia needed this moment after losing her father and after everything else that's going on. I wrote this scene while listening to "Unrequited Love" from Final Fantasy IX OST, the bittersweet bgm that plays in ruined Alexandria in Disc 3, which to me fits the mood of a ruined town in the aftermath of a war. The title of the song is also very fitting for the scene between the two of them considering it's Cid.

Chapter 48: A Thesis on Souls
Chapter 48: A Thesis on Souls

"Hm?" I woke up and found myself sitting in a stone throne in a white void.

All around me are nothing but white… no, there are some things… huge floating shards of glass… each displaying a vision… no… memories. Not my own memories but the memories of an unfortunate girl.

Memories of Aurora, the Calamity Witch, or at least, a shard of her. I must've been drawn here due to my possession of one of the Fingers of Diablos. The middle finger to be precise.

Some displayed the moments of her staying alone in the lab, others showed her being experimented by Cult scientists. Such a poor girl.

"Who… are you…?" Said a little black haired girl with violet eyes who's standing in front of me.

"I am the Necromancer. Ruler of Death and Master of your fates." I introduced myself as the Necromancer seeing as I'm currently wearing my Necromancer robes since I woke up in this space, though the mask is resting on my hand.

"Are you… here to experiment on me too?" She said while trembling.

"Yes."

"Why…?"

"Because… I need more power."

"Why do you… need power?"

"To avoid sharing your fate."

"But… I was strong… and yet I was still…"

"You weren't strong enough."

"I see… How do I… become stronger?"

"You wish to become stronger?"

"Yes… I don't want the pain and loneliness anymore…"

"Then I shall endeavour to give you power… as long as you serve my will." I said as I stood up to approach her.

"No…! Stay back! You'll hurt me like the others!" She shouted, completely in fear. I stepped closer despite it.

"What is it that you desire, child?" I asked as I stood in front of her.

"I want it all to end…! I want to… destroy everything!!" She said as she fades away along with the white space. What a scary middle finger. But still… that's her soul, isn't it? The second confirmation I got about the existence of souls.

I'm aware of the existence of souls. How else did I reincarnate with my memories intact even though my past self and my current self didn't share the same brain? Of course my memories… my identity… was carried by my soul to this new life and new body.

I've done so much research on souls, trying to find them, interact with them and control them as part of my necromancer theme, not much success until now. This is the only time I've successfully interacted with a soul, even if it's fragmented. But even that is already a huge leap.

As I contemplate on my next move, I was sucked out by the darkness and… woke up in the real world.

"Ughh…" I woke up in my room in my Necromancer base.

"Claude! You're awake!" Sherry said with concern in her face.

"Sherry… how long…?"

"Three days…"

"I see. At least I have my clone to act as Claude out there." I stood up and took the newspaper on the table.

"N-No! You shouldn't exert yourself too much!" Sherry said.

"I'm just reading the newspaper, Sherry." I replied. Seriously. When did she become such a worrywart? I continue reading the newspaper to keep up with the development of events in the aftermath of the king's assassination and my battle against Shadow.

"Heh heh heh… Ha ha ha ha… MWA HA HA HA HA!!!" I laughed at the good news. Things worked better than I expected it to be! Letting my sister destroy Iris' popularity while raising my own has paid off. For example, me saving lots of children of aristocrats during the school incident. That earned me lots of approval points from their parents.

Also, through my father's connections, I was able to get acquainted with the Prime Minister and other important people in the king's inner circle and get them to think highly of me with my prodigious talents and a little bit of hypnosis, which must've led to the king hastily suggesting my betrothal with Iris before his death. His fear of the kingdom being divided into two while an underground war is being waged worked in my favour.

With Iris' popularity being rock bottom, I'm now being considered for the position of king, a reigning monarch, instead of just king consort under Iris.

Despite this, a civil war is inevitable. The Thirteen Night Blades, backed by the Cult, will not give up just because my family joins the Royalist faction. It seems that I must enter the world of politics earlier than I thought… oh who am I kidding? I am already there. This will be no different from dealing with the Cult. Cutthroat politics as usual. Especially since my opponent are the Thirteen Night Blades.

"Claude?"

"I'm fine, Sherry. My plans have worked. I shall soon become king. I shall rule the light side as well as the dark side of the world." I declared.

"Indeed. What should we do now, Claude?"

"I'll be busy with a research."

"What kind of magic will you research?"

"Souls."

"Huh?"

"Every living being has a soul, that's why they're alive. The soul contains your memory and identity, just like your brain, but they survive even after death. As I slumbered, I had an epiphany."

"If that's true… then… Can I… see my father and mother again?" I knew she was gonna ask for that. Even if I managed to summon their spirits, I can't allow them to speak the truth to her. But I have an excuse prepared.

"I won't do that to them." I replied.

"Why….? Claude…?" She said weakly as she tried to hold back her tears.

"Sherry. The dead needs their rest. Disturbing their slumber is not a wise decision. It may lead to cause them more suffering." I replied, making excuses as to why I couldn't summon their spirits.

"Oh… I see…" She nods in understanding while hiding her sadness. I see she still needs some convincing.

"Come to think of it, Yukime requested the same thing to me, to the Necromancer. I shall show you what I mean when we get to that."

Some time ago Yukime approached me, the Necromancer, in some kind of scheme to pit me against Don Jon, only for me to thwart that scheme by revealing that Don Jon and the Necromancer are the same person. She stopped scheming against me since then.

As the good boss that I am, I promised to grant her wish if she served me well as long as it didn't clash with my own plans. Her revenge against Gettan is out of the question because I promised to help Gettan claim the 12th seat in the Rounds if he takes over Mitsugoshi for me, not that he could ever get that far considering how weak he is even compared to my Seven Wraiths. He is merely a pawn in my greater plans. At the rate he's going, she will claim her revenge without needing to lift a single finger.

In the end, she asked me to use my powers over death to allow her to meet her deceased mother and people. I should work to fulfil that wish while also proving my point to Sherry. Two birds with one stone. With a mastery over souls, I will be able to create ghost minions too. I can't wait.

I spent the next few days researching on magic to communicate with the spiritual realm and tried conducting spirit summoning rituals and séances using knowledge from my past life once again… and this time it worked thanks to my experience with Aurora, which let me know the correct magical wavelengths needed to perceive and contact spiritual bodies. I finally managed to communicate with the dead.

"Lord Necromancer is still resting, vixen. Get lost." Said the vampire Carmilla, one of Lord Necromancer's Seven Wraiths, his most elite subordinates.

"How rude. At least let me meet with the Acolyte or Gilfried. I have an important message." I said, but she's not having it.

"Whatever it is, it's not important! Now go back to that slum of a city you call home, vixen!" She exclaimed

"Big talk for someone who came from that very city." I taunted before a door opens.

"What's with all that ruckus?" Gilfried, who emerged from the door, said.

"Greetings, Mr. Gilfried. I am here to report on the current situation of Lawless City." I said to Gilfried, ignoring the vampire bitch.

"Heh. I bet it's about that weakling Crimson." The bitch said.

"Not just that. They are talking about the Red Moon. If the Red Moon of legend--"

"Ha! Lord Necromancer has long foreseen that development and I was assigned to take care of it! So now you can go home. Now scram!" The bitch said.

"Actually, Lord Necromancer wants to see you, Miss Yukime." Gilfried said.

"What!? What could he possibly want from this fox bitch!?" Shouted the vampire bitch.

"Heh. Then I shall answer his summons posthaste." I said while giving a slight smirk towards the vampire bitch, who can only scowl as I enter through the door.

After passing through some hallways illuminated by lights coming out of skulls which were attached to the walls and ceiling and guarded by his armoured skeleton soldiers, we entered a throne room filled with incredible architecture rivalling or surpassing ones I've seen in Oriana, though with many skulls and bones carved into the walls and pillars, which gave the room an ominous atmosphere. The many statues depicting robed skeletons wielding scythes also contributed to that.

There I saw… a disheartening sight.

"Aghh…. Arrrrghh….!! I'm sorry….! Forgive me, master…!!"

I saw Adra, the friendliest member of the Seven Wraith, being choked by an invisible force in front of Lord Necromancer, who is making a grasping gesture, and the Acolyte.

"I see… So your sister was there. That's why you stopped chasing them and let them go." Lord Necromancer said in his terrifying voice.

"W-Wha…. How…?" Adra exclaimed in between coughs in utter disbelief.

"Your next mission is to hunt down and kill your beloved sister and bring her head to me. Is that clear?" Lord Necromancer ordered. I can only watch as Adra is unable to give an answer.

"Is that clear!?" Lord Necromancer exclaimed.

"Y-Yes!!! As you… command… Uaghh…!!" Adra had no choice but to accept.

"Good. " Lord Necromancer said as let Adra go from his grip and turned his attention to me.

"Ah. Yukime. Perfect timing." He addressed me as he sat on the throne made of bones. I steeled myself as his gaze made me feel… exposed and naked… as if all my secrets are laid bare before him.

"Y-Yes, Lord Necromancer. I answer your summons." I said as I kneeled in front of him while trembling.

At that moment, I felt like… a foreign magic is entering my brain… my thoughts… And I'm too scared to resist it…

"Ah. I see. Crimson has begun sending his minions to neighboring kingdoms to start creating more ghouls in preparation for the Red Moon." Did he just… read my thoughts!?

"And your Snow Fox Corporation has established itself as a rival to both the MCA and Mitsugoshi, making both parties wary of you." He continued.

"Y-Yes… It was all thanks to your wisdom that I was able to manufacture products that rivals Mitsugoshi's quality and also prevent them from stopping our business on grounds of stealing their intellectual properties by convincing several kingdoms to adopt the antitrust laws to prevent their market dominance." Truly, his wisdom and power knows no bounds.

He gave us the wisdom to manufacture products whose quality rivals that of Mitsugoshi's which made Mitsugoshi accuse us of plagiarism and intellectual property theft, which they cannot prove because all my wisdom came from Lord Necromancer. But even Mitsugoshi was forced to relent when we brought the issue of Mitsugoshi's monopoly over so many markets which destroys competition and made many merchants go bankrupt. The antitrust laws he suggested is a genius plan which prevents Mitsugoshi from dominating every market they get their hands on.

The MCA is currently in talks to invite us to join them but I doubt Lord Necromancer wants to join those losers, which gives me comfort because I don't want to work together with Gettan.

"Good. You've established an economic foothold for me. Soon we shall destroy both Mitsugoshi and the MCA and claim dominance over the economy of the world." He said. Oh, how devious and hypocritical you are, Lord Necromancer. You created the antitrust laws just to limit your rival's options and no doubt you will not follow them when you inevitably take over the market. Truly, how terrifying you are. And how foolish I was to think about turning you against your alter ego, Don Jon.

I've always danced to your tune, had my strings pulled by your fingers…

"For your hard work, you are one step closer towards obtaining your wish. For now, you must return to the Lawless City and prepare your forces for the frenzy that is about to begin." And of course… you enticed me with an irresistible offer that I cannot refuse after crushing my schemes. I just hope… that I will not fall out your favour… or be discarded…

Author's Note:

Thanks to Necromancer's knowledge, Snow Fox Corp is bigger than it was in canon and became the main rival of Mitsugoshi, more than the MCA. He also brought the antitrust laws to TEiS world to prevent Mitsugoshi's monopoly over the market. Yukime is slowly becoming the Necromancer's Gamma. Also them force choke.

At first I wanted to start a mini arc involving Yukime using this chapter's premise but I realized Yukime needs to work more before being rewarded so I decided to go through with the Red Moon arc first.

Chapter 49: Situation in the Capital
Chapter 49: Situation in the Capital

I left the throne room with Adra, whose neck is still red from being choked by an invisible force.

"Are you alright, Adra?" I asked the wolf beastkin with concern.

"I'm fine, Miss Yukime." He answered with a sad smile.

"Why…" did you serve such an evil man?

"Because it's my fault. I disobeyed direct orders and let the enemy go. Not to mention I leaked a crucial intel and thought I could get away with it. But as you saw back then… it was a foolish move and I have to pay the price."

"That's not what I asked."

"Ah… I see. Why I still serve him, right? It's because Lord Necromancer rewards me with something he can take back at any time. Be careful when dealing with him, Miss Yukime. Once you enter into a deal with the devil, you won't ever escape him… even in death." He answered, not elaborating on what his reward was and why it can be taken from him by Lord Necromancer at any time.

"Will you… be able to…" kill your sister?

"I… don't know. I suppose I should leave that question to my future self. Heh heh." He laughed, still with sadness in his eyes.

"Then I wish you luck in the future, Adra."

He merely smiled in response. We parted ways afterwards. His warning made me realize that a deal with such a devil won't be so simple. If he brings my mother and people to life… no doubt he will hold them hostage to coerce me into serving him even more loyally. My loyalty to him is already questionable at best and I have only myself to blame for that.

And it is too late to turn back now. I've… condemned my mother… and my people, the Spirit Fox tribe, to a hell of servitude under the Ruler of Death.

"Mother…. Forgive me…" I muttered as tears of regret flows down my cheeks.

"Gulp gulp gulp… Ahhh!! Waitress! Another mug!" Shouted a blonde man, currently wearing a more casual outfit instead of his signature golden armor.

"You sure you need that much beer, Goldy?" Said a bald muscular man wearing an eyepatch.

They are currently in a tavern in the royal capital, eating and drinking after their defeat in the Bushin Festival along with other participants who lost. The two of them became friends after being defeated on the same day.

The tavern is noisy and crowded as many participants of the Bushin Festival came to eat and drink here after being stranded in the capital city due to martial law and the lack of transportation out of the city. The noisiest of them all is a man called Imatry Notaloos, who's still crying since losing his match just like how he would cry whenever he wins.

"Yeah! I'm sure!" Exclaimed Goldy, confirming his need for more alcohol.

"But you haven't even touched your food."

"Don't touch my food, Quinton!" Said Goldy whilst protecting his plate which is filled with a piece of brown bread, a slice of cheese, slices of ham, a sausage and pickled pearl onions.

"Don't need it. I got my own." Said Quinton while pointing at his own plate which is filled with the same menu.

"But really. Is it that devastating to be defeated by that boy? I get that he's young but he's a prodigy. I even heard talks that he's about to become king of this country!" Quinton said.

"That's not it! I'm disappointed in myself because I blundered greatly in that battle! I failed to recognize a talent when I see it! My eyes usually never failed me!" Said Goldy whilst being depressed.

"Hey. I almost got myself beaten and arrested back when I met the boy for the first time. I was lucky that I noticed his knightly uniform although at the time I didn't know it was the uniform of the Crimson Order, Princess Iris' personal knight order. Come to think of it, I was so lucky that I held myself back." Quinton said as he recounts his experiences while fearing what could've happened to him had he offended the young noble. Quinton drank his beer to calm himself down.

"Man… That boy is a monster." Goldy said.

"That Mundane Mann, who turned out to be Shadow, is an even bigger monster. His battle with that Necromancer guy is what ruined this town. No wonder why I was defeated so easily." Quinton said.

"To think such monsters exist in this world…"

"Yeah…" Quinton replied in agreement.

"What are you going to do now?"

"I dunno. The martial law has been lifted but the trains ain't working yet and I'm in no mood to walk or for ships. The kingdom seems to be recruiting mercenaries in preparation for the war against Oriana though so I was thinking of joining. What about you, Goldy?"

"I was… thinking of teaching…"

"Teaching?"

"Yes. I want to pass on my knowledge, my swordsmanship style and dreams to my pupils… so they will carry on the legend."

"Hmm… Not a bad idea. I heard the Midgar Spellsword school was attacked by terrorists awhile back so I guess they'll accept teachers."

"Alright! I shall become a teacher! Wait for me my future students! I shall lead you all to a bright and golden future!" Declared Goldy while standing atop his table, attracting the attention of everyone in the tavern. Even the crying Imatry Notaloos stopped whining for a few seconds.

"Sorry about that." Muttered Goldy as he embarrassedly sat back on his chair and started eating his food while Quinton just laughed while patting Goldy's back.

"Oh? Isn't that Annerose?" Said Quinton as he spotted Annerose entering the tavern.

"Annerose Nichtsehen? Didn't she return to Velgalta?" Said Goldy.

"Oi! Miss Annerose! Over here!" Quinton called out to her.

"Hey! You know her?" Asked Goldy.

"We talked to each other a bit about Mundane Mann during the tournament."

"I see." Goldy replied in understanding.

"Fancy meeting you here, Quinton. Goldy." Annerose greeted them as she sat on their table.

"Indeed. Thought you went back to Velgalta already." Quinton said.

"I was actually on the way to take a train home… until that whole disaster happened." Annerose replied.

"Aye, I can see that. Even we are stuck in this city for few days until the train companies can fix their trains and railways." Goldy said.

"So, what are your plans now while waiting for the trains to be fixed, Miss Annerose? Perhaps you're planning on going with the good ol' carriage or just walk until you reach other cities? Or take the sea route?" Quinton asked.

"I've been hired as a mercenary by this kingdom for their upcoming war actually." Annerose replied.

"Eh!? Is that okay!? Won't your country be mad!?" Exclaimed Goldy.

"I'm no longer one of the Seven Blades of Velgalta and I've taken mercenary jobs before coming here. Besides, I can't stand back and watch while people need my help." Annerose explained.

"I see. Well, with you joining the kingdom's mercenaries, I'm sure many warriors who came for the Bushin Festival would consider joining too once they hear your name." Quinton said while smiling.

"I was thinking of joining too!" Exclaimed Goldy.

"But ain't you planning to be a teacher?" Quinton said.

"The war ain't happening yet so I can teach while waiting for it to begin!" Declared Goldy.

"Well, at least it'll be reassuring to have more people on board." Said Quinton.

"Have you heard news about Mundane Mann?" Asked Annerose.

"Huh? Err…. Nope. Not a thing." Quinton said.

"I see. I suppose he must be busy mourning his brother's passing." Annerose said sadly.

"Huh? Brother?" Goldy said.

"But Mundane Mann is…" Quinton was about to interject before Annerose cut him off.

"It's fine! I'm sure he will appear once again in the future! A great warrior like him won't be stopped by his brother's passing for long!" Exclaimed Annerose.

"Y-Yeah… He sure won't." Muttered Quinton in confusion.

"I hope one day we can fight side by side so I can learn more from him!" Said Annerose excitedly.

"Umm… Sure… Sure you will…" Said Quinton with an uneasy smile.

"By the way… who actually won the Bushin Festival? Has it been announced yet?" Asked Goldy.

"I doubt that. The kingdom is too busy with dealing with that whole mess, not to mention their king is dead, so I guess this year's Bushin Festival is cancelled." Quinton replied.

"Haaah… what a mess that was." Said Goldy as he lifted his mug to his mouth before realizing it's empty.

"Waitress! Where's my beer!?"

"We should've extended the martial law and then force those warriors to become mercenaries!" Said a well dressed nobleman who sat in a meeting room in the royal castle along with many other noblemen, including me.

"That would be a bad idea. They are guests to this city. We cannot afford to treat them like that. We'll let them join the mercenary forces out of their own free will, like we always do." I said.

"You're too soft, Lord Claude! We are at war here!" Shouted another nameless nobleman.

"No. I'm being realistic. If we go through with that suggestion, word will spread about how Midgar kingdom forcibly conscripts Bushin Festival participants into war. Other kingdoms will in turn believe that Midgar has become so weak and would stoop so low and we may even lose our right to host further Bushin Festivals in the future." I explained my point to the nobleman, rendering him speechless.

"But are you sure that will be enough?" Asked yet another nobleman.

"No worries. I've personally recruited Annerose Nichtsehen. Word of her joining should reassure the others who wants to join."

"Annerose? One of the Seven Blades of Velgalta!? You recruited another country's soldier!?"

"Former member of the Seven Blades of Velgalta. She is now a free woman and she joins of her own free will."

"Tch. What else do you suggest to prepare for the upcoming war then?" Asked another nobleman.

"We need to give incentives for the mercenaries to permanently sign up as formal soldiers of the kingdom if they have proven themselves worthy. We must also intensify the training of the current knights we have on our command. I will help on that front."

"Huh? A boy like you? Instructing knights?" A stupid nobleman mockingly said.

"You must've fallen asleep during all my matches then." That is enough to shut him up.

"Haaah… How exhausting it is to argue with stupid noblemen." I complained while having dinner with Alexia in the royal castle. My… the main body's father and Iris are absent, most likely busy, and Charlotte is avoiding me for some reason. A large selection of food fit for royalty is spread on the table. Beef steaks, salmon steaks, salad, meat pies, roast chicken, you name it, they have it. I even got a glass of hippocras, a medieval spiced wine. We won't be able to finish all of them with just the two of us though.

When dealing with the Cult, at least they will know exactly what to say and what not to say. But those guys? Their opinions are not just cruel, callous and short sighted, they were just plain stupid! And they thought I am the stupid one!

As future king, I have to deal with those manchildren everyday in meetings after meetings discussing various topics! Ugh! The main body sure have it easy compared to me! He didn't have to deal with those fools!

But I suppose that is to be expected of expendable minions of the Thirteen Night Blades who were sent there to annoy me. They wouldn't dare make a fool of themselves.

"Haah… If only I was able to attend that particular meeting, I would--" Said Alexia before I cut her off.

"They probably won't survive your tongue lashing, Alexia."

"Hmph. They sure won't. If only I didn't have to deal with so many paperworks!" Said Alexia while eating her steak.

"How's your sister?" I asked.

"Still training with Lady Beatrix. She's obsessed with training these days that she barely makes time for anything else. Well… she can't help it because… whenever she stopped training, she would… cry and apologize to the people that she… probably killed during her… rampage." Alexia answered with concerned face, emphasizing the word 'probably'.

"I see. Even though we never found evidence of the claims against her…"

"She wasn't in the right mind back then so I doubt she noticed whether or not she actually killed people that day. That uncertainty alone is enough to… By the way, aren't you her fiancé now? Why don't you go and comfort your future wife already, future king?" Alexia said.

"I suppose I should… when my schedule is cleared from those meetings. Especially since tomorrow we're finally going to discuss Rose's fate."

"Leave that to me. I'll take care of things. Just… please talk to her. She won't listen to me…" Alexia pleaded.

"Very well." I accepted while noting how Alexia's mental state seemed to have gotten better compared to days ago. She's more resilient than I thought. Iris could learn a lot from her.

Author's Note:

Another chapter dedicated to the aftermath of the Bushin Festival before we get into the Red Moon arc. Found a chance to have Annerose appear and show how she still believed the misunderstanding about Mundane Mann's "brother".

Also, if you noticed, Goldy and Quinton were eating the ploughman's lunch. I just had a huge appetite when I write this chapter so I can't help but write about food. :p

And Claude (clone) is now living in the castle as some sort of king in training, having meetings and such, dealing with many governmental duties in the absence of the king.

And Iris' mental state is worse than it was in canon. Her dad murdered, the three people she thinks are responsible (Shadow, Necromancer and King Oriana) are out of her reach, her popularity in the kingdom being rock bottom that she even lost her right to the throne and being accused of killing her own people during her rampage.

Chapter 50: Damage Control
Chapter 50: Damage Control

"Hyaaahhh!!!" Shouted Iris as she swings her sword. A shockwave follow afterwards. The training ground she's practicing in looked like it had been hit by a natural disaster with how ruined it is.

"That's enough." Said Beatrix while looking at her with pity.

"No… it's not enough… If I stop… I'll…" Muttered Iris in between heavy breaths. Distracting herself with training is the only thing that allowed her to forget about her guilt of slaying her own people. Whether she actually did it or not is irrelevant in her mind.

"You should rest, Princess Iris. At this rate..." Beatrix said before being interrupted.

"No! I must… I… Ahh…" She muttered as she collapsed to her knees, leaning on her sword which is planted on the ground.

"You should listen to your instructor, Iris. Aren't you the one who asked her to train you?" A new voice said as he entered the training ground.

"Good evening, Mr. Claude." Beatrix greeted.

"How long has she been at this?" Claude asked.

"Since this morning. She barely stop even for a meal."

"Haaahh… Iris! Stop that! You need stop before you kill yourself!"

"But… If I stop…" She muttered while looking like she's about to cry.

I know this symptom. Sherry also couldn't sleep after she killed for the first time. Thought Claude.

"Iris. No one has been able to prove that you killed people that time. You can't blame yourself for what you didn't do." Claude said.

"But what if I did…?" She said as tears finally fell on her cheeks. Claude walked towards her and gave her a hug.

"You didn't. It was all a lie meant to damage your reputation."

"My people… they didn't trust me anymore…"

"You can still regain their trust. But you shouldn't let the words of evil men to affect you. Your kingdom still needs you. Your family needs you."

"Claude… do you still have faith in me? Even after all my constant failures?"

"Yes. Absolutely."

"You think that I… can do better?"

"Absolutely. Your sister too."

…. A moment of silence passed before Iris hugged him back.

"Thank you…" She whispered.

"You're welcome." Claude said as he lifted her on a princess carry and turned to face Beatrix.

"Thank you for your assistance today, Lady Beatrix. Please get some rest too." Claude said while bowing his head towards Beatrix.

"Very well. I shall." Beatrix replied as Claude carried Iris back to the castle.

After Iris took a bath with the help of the maids and had a warm soup, Claude sat beside Iris in her bedroom as she laid on her bed which is filled with cute animal plushies. She held his hand as her tired mind drifted closer and closer to sleep, though her fears made her resist sleep.

"Claude… Please don't leave me…" She whispered weakly.

"I won't, Iris. Not when you and the kingdom needs me." He whispered back. That seemed to calm her down as she allowed sleep to take her.

He waited until she fell asleep before he left the room, though not before putting one of her teddy bears beside her, which she proceed to hug as if her life depends on it.

Now Iris is emotionally dependent on me… on Claude. Heh heh heh. Though I suppose I have to help her with sleep every night until she gets better… just like with Sherry. Haahh… What a pain. Please switch with me, main body.

"How did it go?" I asked Claude on my sister's condition a day after he started taking care of her while having lunch. The food is luxurious and plentiful as usual that I almost want to eat a burger from McRonald instead.

"I managed to calm her down and get her to rest and eat properly, though she still had nightmares last night so I had to return to her room a few times to calm her down." He said.

"Why are you so afraid of sleeping with her? Didn't you sleep with your sister already?" I teased.

"A-Ahem! I'll have you know that I slept with my sister on different beds! You can ask our old dorm manager! But anyway, you know how risky it is to start more rumors while her reputation is still rock bottom. We don't want to make things worse when not everyone has accepted me as future king yet." Claude said whilst being flustered. How cute.

"Hee hee hee. I know. Come to think of it, where's your sister?" I asked.

"She's… probably avoiding me. She has been since the tournament. Last I heard she was holding some private meetings and or parties with her inner circle of nobles." He replied with a neutral face. That's strange. That clingy sister of his… avoiding him?

"Well… She's probably mad because of your engagement with Iris. She never liked that arrangement although she probably hates me more. She'll probably get over it and start clinging to you again. Let's just hope that whatever she's discussing with her inner circle wouldn't ruin my sister's reputation like she did last time."

"I doubt she'll do that this time though." He replied while eating his food.

"I'll trust you on that then." I said while also eating my food.

"How's the meeting?" He asked after sipping on his wine.

"It went well. I succeeded in proving Rose's innocence with Glen's help. She's now free to leave her residence. Also, I got some help from Natsume in gathering information about the witness testimonies and evidences of Iris' "murder" case and found all of them to be forged by unknown parties. I'll at least use them to clear out Iris' name in the next meeting." I replied.

"Good. Though I doubt the Thirteen Night Blades will let this case be cleared even after that." He replied.

"True… But we have our hands tied with so many cases already though. We can't do damage control forever. In the end, my sister has to pick herself up on her own. Haaahh…" I sighed as I continue eating.

"Say… Claude. Has anyone approached you to… curry favors with you?" I asked him something that has been bothering me since I read my father's journal.

"No. Why?"

"… It's nothing. Just be careful. You're the future king and many people would want to manipulate you in these troubled times." I answered with a warning.

"Okay. I will." He reassured me with a smile.

Claude Normann. He has proven himself to be trustworthy and reliable over time… and yet I can't help but agree with my father that his rise to power has been too fast and too convenient. My father wrote in his journal that many state officials, high nobles and even the Prime Minister praised Claude a lot before the incident.

Their praises almost sounded like they're pressuring him to arrange Iris' engagement with Claude in order to fix her dwindling reputation, which he complied with because he trusted the Normann family despite his suspicions.

And after father died, it was them who recommended him to become king whilst doing nothing to defend Iris. No matter how I see it, that's suspicious.

Is someone manipulating things from the shadows? Is someone pulling Claude's strings? Or perhaps… is Claude himself the one who manipulates things from the shadows into giving himself the throne? I shudder at the thought. I hope I was just being paranoid.

In a meeting room inside the Midgar Royal Capital branch of Mitsugoshi building, 3 of the Seven Shades are having a meeting.

"I've given Princess Alexia everything she needs to run damage control for Princess Iris. It wasn't that hard considering I was there when she went berserk and I did minimize the damages she caused." Said Beta.

"Good work, Beta. You should continue assisting Princess Alexia. Since Princess Rose has been released from house arrest today, I shall approach her and recruit her to our cause." Said Alpha.

"Princess Rose too?" Exclaimed Beta.

"Shadow personally cured her of Possession and gave her his power. He must have plans for her, especially with her father being manipulated by Necromancer. She shall be the 666th recruit." Replied Alpha.

"I see. Very well." Said Beta.

"666th recruit? I thought Mr. Claude's sister holds that number!" Exclaimed Gamma.

"She didn't join as a formal member of Shadow Garden because she does not operate in the shadows like the rest of us. Instead, her political influence will be a great asset to our cause. In fact, she is currently helping with clearing Princess Iris' reputation though her connections among the nobility. Hopefully it will allow Mr. Claude's faction to gather as much allies for the inevitable civil war and the upcoming war against Oriana." Explained Alpha.

"I see. That's reassuring." Said Gamma.

"Now then. Onto the next agenda. The vampires from Lawless City. They've infiltrated various kingdoms, including Midgar. Such movements are highly unusual." Alpha said as he handed over some reports to both Beta and Gamma.

"With the capital's security still in shambles after Lord Shadow's battle, the vampires were able to enter the capital pretty easily. Is this one of Necromancer's schemes?" Said Beta.

"Probably not. The Lawless City is under the jurisdiction of a man called Don Jon, who rose to power after defeating the three rulers of Lawless City single handedly few years ago. He now rules the Lawless City and has set up several illegal businesses, including drugs and illegal goods distribution, slave trafficking and more. As far as we know the Cult has no influence there." Said Gamma.

"We should at least consider the possibility that this Don Jon person is one of Necromancer's minion though." Alpha said.

"Ughh… I hope not. The things he already did were crazy enough!" Said Beta.

"No… It's not crazy enough… not yet. We mustn't underestimate the capabilities of Shadow's archenemy. He is a greater threat than the Cult." Warned Alpha, making both Beta and Gamma nodded in agreement.

"Then we must consider the possibility of him being the one sending those vampires out for another nefarious scheme of his. We should probably contact Mary the vampire hunter." Said Beta.

"Indeed." Replied Alpha in agreement.

"Speaking of Lawless City, the Snow Fox Corporation which is owned by Yukime, one of the three rulers of Lawless City, has expanded their business again. This time they even sold chocolates!" Exclaimed Gamma.

"What!? But no one besides us knows the ingredients!" Exclaimed Beta.

"Was there a breach in our security that they were able to steal the information?" Alpha asked.

"No, I don't think so. The security of Mitsugoshi was top notch and none of our members would betray us." Gamma answered.

"Then… I suspect that this is the work of Necromancer. He also have access to the Shadow Wisdom." Alpha said.

"What!? The Shadow Wisdom!?" Exclaimed Gamma.

"Yes. He knows the meaning of our names." Explained Alpha.

"That Necromancer…" Beta muttered while gritting her teeth.

"We can't let him have the advantage forever. For Shadow's sake as well as ours… Has Eta made any progress on that Artifact that Epsilon found from the underground maze beneath the capital?" Alpha asked whilst being relieved that Eta was busy with the Artifact when Shadow was injured and vulnerable after his last battle against the Necromancer or else she would've attempted to dissect Shadow's weakened body.

"Yes. And she said the result is better than expected." Gamma said.

"Oh? What kind of Artifact was it?" Alpha said with interest.

"The Artifact was…"

Author's Note:

Cliffhanger! Haven't actually decided what Artifact it will be but it should be a 5 star item now. I'm open to suggestion.

Also, another chapter dedicated for the aftermath of the Bushin Festival arc but we're starting to enter the Red Moon arc. Also, can't help but add another Seven Shades meeting scene but it's been awhile since the last time and there's important info dump here so it's fine I guess.

Also Alexia being Alexia, started suspecting something about Claude's rise to power. I almost forgot that him being named future king had been too fast (like, it escalated too quickly) so I had to have someone suspecting it (Also to give credit to him for being involved in it instead of just having everything handed to him on a silver platter). Alexia and King Klaus are the perfect characters for it. Shadow Garden didn't suspect a thing because they were biased towards Shadow's "friend".
