The Nameless

Actually, screw it. The kingdom's in a shambles at our hands, and no honorable sort is going to have anything to do with us. The idea of operating as a mercenary outfit is laughable-- who in the world would trust a bunch of convicted scum with a track record of betrayal, unless we go to some foreign land where we're unheard of?-- and so I'll swallow my objections to what must be done.

We preside over a band of assorted thugs, thieves and murderers. Having forsaken duty, no high-minded ideals will serve to keep them bound to us... that leaves what leadership skills we may muster, and profit. No one with a brain would hire us, but while the kingdom is fighting to its death the outlying areas have been left undefended.

While having some semblence of structure, we can loot unchallenged on a massive scale. Perhaps we can convince our more patriotic followers that it's better that those of our kingdom grab the best loot before the foreigners do it. Anyway:

[X] Convince the Nameless to follow you.
-[X] Into Banditry!: There is a debt owed to the Nameless. Every rancid fruit or stone cast, every curse and humiliation has had its price. With us free of the Kingdom and her of all defences, let us take into our own hands what we are owed!

We may well have some time before the tale spreads. All who know it are at Fallory, and will stay there for some time. We just need keep away from the area around the enemies' supply lines.

Maybe it won't work, but I think it's worth trying. If not, we can turn to banditry at any time.

(I edited some stuff out.)

You seem to assume that the world of this quest has a very black and white view of honor. Either you must be willing to die for the people who enslaved you and shoved you in front of an enemy army to die, or you are an honorless, worthless cur.
Stay there for some time? There are going to be messengers, not to mention deserters who see the battle as hopeless and escape. They all bear with them news, there's no reason to expect that our reputation won't be coming along with us... and for that matter, our own men haven't exactly sworn a vow of silence. Many apparently wanted to slink off and defend their own homes, those guys will be spreading around the Kingdom.

Time spent in a mercenary band is wasted time that we could be using to learn to survive as bandits and solidify our command while all the forces in the area are distracted and it's at a relative easy mode. There's no reason to keep from it.

I don't think the quest has a black and white view, not at all. The kingdom seems gray at best, and I haven't heard anything particularly outrageous on the other side to make them black. But I had an idea of the character sticking through trial and tribulation and being steadfast to ideals, so I pushed that. On the very first choice, we said "Screw the kingdom, I'm out for number one and who's with me?"

I wanted to keep developing the character along my prior conception, but that obviously doesn't work out anymore as I'd initially planned it and so I've scrapped that to cycle to something else I find interesting. So if he is out for number one, let's follow suit with what small bands of thugs and criminals organized by someone authoratative have done throughout history and start pillaging while the going's good for it.

I doubt the besieging army is going to send messengers out just to spread news that some rather inconsequential group of soldiers chose to desert rather than give battle. The soldiers we left behind are most likely dead, and the people in the city can't desert because the city is under siege.

Well, my view of the first vote is: "Let's not get killed in a pointless fight for the people who enslaved us and shoved us in front of an enemy army to die."

Do you think that most battles are fought to the very man? That tends to be a rare exception. Men who are losing unless VERY disciplined have a tendency to go into a rout if their leader isn't able to keep them in shape, and then they generally start to flee for their lives. Their foes can ride them down, killing and capturing and the like, but when hundreds or thousands of men are in flight it's often difficult to catch them all, especially if the opposing army has something better to do and focus on. Such men who flee here-- and those who lose a battle aside, given that we did just desert in bulk that gave tons of other men a reason to do the same when it was already looking rather hopeless-- are likely to scatter to the winds and return home to defend it from the troubles ahead. They will know, and they will tell. If you want a secret defection, don't do it in front of two massive armies. The seiging army is also going to have lots of contact with the people outside the city in order to sustain its supplies, guaranteed.

Well, my view of the first vote is: "Let's not get killed in a pointless fight for the people who enslaved us and shoved us in front of an enemy army to die."

If it's just that, then escape alone. But we rallied everyone with us when we left and took off with the bulk of the Nameless. Those guys for the most part likely deserve their punishment and then some asides, but we took them away and carved out many of the defences arrayed against the enemy without a fight. So what does that indicate? Some affinity for these scum of society. We're out for ourselves and to survive despite what the blood-drenched higher-ups would want from us, so let's commit to it.

- huh, this is a very interesting choice... we are already leading the worst of the worst, the rapists and the murderers since all of those that have a little sense of duty and honor are left dead back in the walls. I'll have to think about it. but becoming a robber baron is appealing in a way.

I like both the merc and bandit option. I feel like the merc option is more stressful though. Trying to hold our men to a standard seems nigh impossible
Banditry feeds their Vader instincts.

I don't really see, leaving the battlefield as the actions of a coward or a man whos only looking out for number one. We're the Nameless' commander that makes us responsible for their lives, sure some of them are shity people, some are probably like us. The battle looked pretty hopeless, we know it wasn't by word of QM, but did we really want to defend a bunch of people who basically enslaved us, and didn't care for our lives at all. I don't see any loss of honor because what basically amounts to a slave army decided they didn't want to fight for those who enslaved them. We didn't force anyone to leave, those that wanted to follow us followed those that wanted to stay did so.

EDIT: I'm aiming to play a pretty cynical guy who's just looking out for the people under his command, trying to do the best thing he can for them.

We've got about six months to a year before the story of our desertion really starts to spread, that gives us time to establish a real reputation. If we're really that upset about our desertion we can use our time as a mercenary leader to gather men and resources to mount a rebellion against the invaders if we feel that badly about it.

Thoughts on the Update.

Sylvia, you swore you saw the glint of her teeth spread in a wicked smile, and a dancing light in her eye
Sylvia thoroughly enjoyed that...Relationship increased

Sylvia definitely didn't like the government. She has good reason to.
Some off our men chose to stay, as to be expected Fallory was probably their home.
We and our men definitely need a good drink, off the nearest town we go.

Wow, didn't expect this much discussion in one of my quests. Kinda cool, actually.

Thanks for feed back too.

Not really. The original story was me thinking of a warrior who's dying making a trek through an abandoned world. Sort of expanded from there.

Black Company is a go. Glen Cook would be proud.

Where are you guys dragging this six months figure up from? Do you really think that we would have been the only ones to desert from the battle and that absolutely no one else has any line of communication with the rest of the kingdom, no birds to carry messages nor magical means even if they can't slip out a messenger through some other passage? That none of the massive army besieging will boast in how they got the battle-scarred Nameless to flee without a fight when they're foraging around?

It's not going to immediately be known that we betrayed them, but the rumors of such a huge and important battle aren't going to stay under wraps for long. Though that doesn't even matter that much... the people of the kingdom already hated and spat on us before for our mixture of theoretical and actual status as heinous criminals, and that was while we were defending them. What do you think they will think of us now that we are deserts in a battle involving soldiers brought from all over the kingdom? Soldiers that will now certainly never make it home, no doubt thanks in part to our abandoning the field to save our criminal lives? Do you think that their families will look upon our familiar banner and tattoos and think highly of us?

I just don't see any reasonable person hiring us for anything more honorable than banditry unless we strike out for foreign lands. So why not retain the bulk of our men (the farther we go the more likely we are to fall apart) and just start pillaging around here? It's what the men are good at, and we could be the bandit king if we organize it. It should certainly be more consistent in getting them fed than waiting on people to get over their revulsion and hire us.

Some time? Yeah, it'll spend at least 6 months there, at the very least. Fallory is the capitol, after all. The siege could last up to a year, and possibly even longer.

This is were I'm getting the 6 month number.

Do you really think that we would have been the only ones to desert from the battle and that absolutely no one else has any line of communication with the rest of the kingdom, no birds to carry messages nor magical means even if they can't slip out a messenger through some other passage? We were the only force outside the city wall/gates from what I could tell so presumably no one else was able to desert during this battle, yet.
If I was sieging a place I'd have my men kill any messenger birds that get sent out. That's if there is even anyone for Fallory to call for help from, it is the capital after all, it possible that the invaders have already conquered the rest of the nation. I've got nothing to say about magical means or attempting to slip out a messenger, those are both probably possibilities.

The massive invading army is gonna be kinda busy sieging the capital for the next 6 months-1 year to start going around boasting about getting us to leave.

That's why building a reputation as a mercenary company is a good idea. Spread rumors of our own that we were never present at the battle, build up a good reputation before rumors can seriously start to spread and that reputation will shoot down any rumors about us leaving the battle of Fallory. We go the bandit rout and when the invading army finishes their conquest they are now free to focus their efforts on killing our sorry asses. We go mercenary that doesn't happen unless we decided to provoke them first.

EDIT: Hell failing getting work from the natives the invaders will probably be willing to hire us.

It indicates that we won't let the people we fought with die, even if they are criminals. It indicates that as we had no chance to separate those deserving death from those who don't, we won't just condemn them all.

  1. What deserters? It was the last battle (or not-battle) before the siege began, deserters on the side of Delvah had already run away and weren't around to witness our desertion. And why should men of the opposing army desert? They are winning.
  2. Where would Delvah send messenger birds? The kingdom is overrun, Fallory is the capital, this is the last stand.
  3. I don't think any soldiers robbing the peasants will stop to chat about how the Nameless left the fight.
So why not retain the bulk of our men (the farther we go the more likely we are to fall apart) and just start pillaging around here?
Because I just don't like this option. There is a vast grey area between being so utterly honorable that you are willing to die for the people who enslaved you without a reasonable expectiation to achieve anything, and being complete scum without any morals.

Kill every single bird? Including ones released at night, ones that are flying high above the walls? That's potentially a tall task. The defenders had the benefit of knowing that a bird would be coming with an offer ahead of time, knowing the specific direction it would be coming from (the side of their walls facing the giant oncoming army) and the light of day when they torched that single bird. And it was flying close to them, as it was trying to get to them over the walls which the defenders are at the top of, so that allows for the distance the ranged attacks must travel to be minimized The besiegers have none of those advantages, and again it's a six month long period. People can certainly grow lax even if they were given such an order.

It doesn't even have to be official communications demanding troops be sent here and there. People have families and loved ones, you know? People who they might want to tell about how the city is being put to siege, and how that came to pass. Rumors spread faster than men... and as you admit, messengers or magical contact are likely possibilities.

How do you think a siege is supported, also? Unless they're magically conjuring food out of thin air, they've got to get supplies from somewhere. They'll be bringing some of that from home, but oftentimes that is supplemented or even outweighed by local foraging. That's hunting and the like, sure, but more prominently also in getting food from the local peasantry. Whether that's done through purchasing, intimidation or outright theft and robbery is generally up to the local commanders, but when you have a massive army they're going to have some contact with the local populace. They may very well have a bunch of camp followers from this kingdom as well. Do you think that none of them will ever talk to the surrounding population about the outcome of this battle?

That's why building a reputation as a mercenary company is a good idea. Spread rumors of our own that we were never present at the battle, build up a good reputation before rumors can seriously start to spread and that reputation will shoot down any rumors about us leaving the battle of Fallory. EDIT: Hell failing getting work from the natives the invaders will probably be willing to hire us.

Just spread a bunch of lies about it? Now, how much do you think anyone else will value this when we're clearly members of the Nameless, and were fighting this threat all throughout the kingdom? What will they think about that when we are out requesting pay for whatever work while the capitol is under siege? It's not like anyone would have valued our lives enough to release us of our duty and surrender a fraction of their desperately needed army.

Banditry follows a similar rule; don't try to rob those in power. I don't think the invaders particularly care about the peasants out here, and they certainly don't have full control now. We can avoid raiding the towns that they control when it comes to that, if it comes to that. We don't actually know what they're out for, it may not be outright conquest.

And for that matter, I think any mercenary work that we could get would mostly revolve around protecting totally desperate people (the only sort willing to overlook our flaws) from the only army standing's foraging parties... which would obviously irritate them. The invaders have no need for men especially of our dubious character, they have enough mouths to feed as it is.

  1. Where would Delvah send messenger birds? The kingdom is overrun, Fallory is the capital, this is the last stand.
I want to say that this isn't true. Toppling a capitol doesn't necessarily mean the fall of a nation. America didn't suddenly become british colonies again when the capitol burned during the war of 1812.

Same concept.

The country is dying, that still hold true. The capitol is located at the center of the nation. Everything east is still unburnt, and to the west, there are some cities that the invaders have simply bypassed due to not wanting to waste time on a siege.

Ok. I am getting somewhere.

Two men and woman looked at Enemy army camp.
"They going to pass us soon Theo and if Delvan fell they will try their luck with the swamp." Woman said.
"Yes, I know it not like we can stop them. If they were stupid enough to start their attack at the Swamp where we can get supplies... That would be much different talk."
"We still have some time before their main force passes us and we still got some more exotic things. They sending a small team to check Stormspire. Few golden looking people even." The man said with a sneer. "How many we send to slaughter them and point out looking important is asking for an arrow to the Gular?"
Theseus Boyle, or Theo for his friends was deep in thoughts.
"Father?"
"Aster my son." Theo looked at his son and a huge grin on his face. "I have an idea. If you and your lovely wife would be kind enough to let this old man entertain himself with this idea of mine and help me. It would be greatly appreciated. It will require lots of guts. Both our and enemy because it is risky."
"Of course father." The woman answered with a smile. Aster Boyle, on the other hand, was uneasy.
"Splendid!" Theo shouted. "Aster if I was a few years younger I swear I would try to woo this splendid Lady heart you managed to capture. Let us ride. We must store something in Stormspire before they reach it."
The woman giggled while Aster Boyle just rolled his eyes. Theo was in his playful state, so there will be some kind of trouble for him.

Lord Grant Fell was terrified. He was not a coward. He leads dozens of charges and was never afraid to cross swords with Knight even if their skill in combat were greater than his, but this? He remembered Stormspire. It was emptied before they arrived. Unfortunately, for their enemies lack of time prevented them from taking all magical items. They were on their way back when one of wagon wheels broke from one of item sudden magical discharge. Unwilling to leave even one item of power, he decided to stop here. Then bodies. Soldiers were talking to each other and suddenly one of them just dies. Bodies were examined. No cuts, no nothing and in a bright light of day. Spellbreakers said no magic. It was a mystery. Only the look of pain and utter terror on their faces. First, they were hundred of proud courageous soldiers and wizards. Then half of that. Now there were just a few of soldiers and two wizards left. All of them on the verge of soiling their pants. No, he will not die like this. He ordered rest of his men to abandon carts and just grab few items. They took the horses and just ride like all hell was on their tail. He did not look back. Even if he did he would see nothing. Few minutes after their departure lone masked figure emerged from under one of the wagons. Joined shortly by three more standing from different places appearing seemingly from nowhere.
"Did they took it?" It asked. It was answered with a nod from another figure.
"Second part was a success. Send a message." It ordered.

Idiots! Traitors! You are surrounded by idiots.
Lord Fell had one job. One fucking job. No, that will not stand. He ordered Sir West to retrieve items right after Fall reported. He laughed bitterly. Retrieve, yeah right. Ambushing Delvan soldiers took them and probably are laughing right now. Such disgrace. Well, at least few of items were retrieved. Spellbreakers checked them. One the tribal looking spear was devoid of magic.
"This was it?" The main commander picked up the item.
"Yes my lord. This thing destroyed the wagon." Lord Fell answered.
"You fall for Delvan trap. Do not think I will forget it Fell."
A soldier entered the tent.
"My lord. Sir West is back."
"Send him in. Not that he have anything to report." West entered the tent he was looking uneasy.
"My lord."
"Report West, so I can get back to deciding Fell fate." He glared at said knight.
"Items were retrieved." West said trying to be calm.
"As you hear Delvan soldiers took items you were supposed to..." He looked at Sir West. "Come again?"
"Items are on their way to camp. My lord."
"Nothing was taken?"
"..." West paled.
"Sir West?"
"Corpses my Lord."
"What?"
"Corpses are missing."
"Animals?"
"I believe that is not the case my Lord. There were tracks originating from tent sir Fell said he stored fallen. I ordered trackers to follow them, but they disappeared shortly."
"Let me get this straight. Delvan forces left powerful magical objects and took corpses?"
"Looks that way my Lord."
"MY LORD!" There was a commotion in front of the tent. One of the guards run into a tent. "There is something you should see."

Corpse. Fell soldier corpse was found inside the camp. Followed by next one... and next one... and next one. Adding Fell and few of his survivors all hundred bodies were accounted for. He was puzzled. His soldiers a few hours ago cheering after quick decisive victory at the border now were much quieter. There was fear of the unknown in the air. He wanted to blame Delvan for this, but one of those corpses were found in the command tent. It was just sitting there its face frozen in pain and fear.
"MY LORD!"

His soldiers started dying in a similar manner to Fell soldiers. With few disturbing differences. One of the corpses were found grabbed by Richter as Fell stated. Richter was one of the soldiers who appeared after his death near Stormspire. There were marks on the ground. It looked like something was attempting to drag Richter away. His leg nowhere to be found. Bodies of those who died at Stormspire started appearing near new victims with missing parts. Some looking like they were trying to get help from new victims, some looked like they were ones killing them. Missing things were not clean cut, but torn apart by force and surprisingly the 'attacking' corpses missed nothing. He doubled guard near improvised morgue.

Twenty people died to this assassin? No one saw anything.

Ten more died. To this... this infernal curse.

"Gods have forsaken us." Sir Fell declared.
"Shut up Fell, or I will hang you for treason."
"My lord what we should do?" Sir West looked for guidance.
He was ashamed he had nothing to give him.
"Bow to the swamp. Sweetie." An odd voice answered.
Everybody looked at the entrance to the tent. There was a normal looking woman. Soldiers were pointing spears at her.
"Get her in." Commander ordered. "Who are you?"
The woman looked at him. "I am but a humble servant, my Lord. I offer knowledge of old to those asking for it. Yes, yes. I know much. Pale Lady tells much to her servants."
"A witch?" Sir West asked with disgust.
"Some call me a wise lady, some call me a midwife, Some call me Speaker of Pale Lady, but yes some call me a Witch."
"Would you tell me your name lady?" Commander asked.
"You can call me Pes."
"What you offer?"
"Knowledge of your current predicament."
"And the price?"
"I will take gold."
"Tell me." Commander throws his pouch on the table. Pes picks it up and after few seconds hides in her robes satisfied with the amount.
"You are stalked, by a beast of Old."
"How Old?" Commander paled visibly.
Witch chuckles. "Old enough gray mustache to be one of your nightmares. It was bound to the spear you retrieved. Magic keeping it at bay. When spear lost its magic. Beast is free once more. Devouring those who did not bow to it in death. Only those who follow their directions are safe."
"What it wants?"
"More death." Witch chuckles once more. "Those unmarked by its teeth bought their souls back in servitude."
"How to stop it?" Fell asked terrified.
Witch thought for a minute. "If you have any follower of old ways they could help. If not offer spear to the swamp and it may convince one of Swamp Walkers to look at you with the merciful eye. They made the thing you carry and protecting you and those close." Witch smiled and turned toward tent entrance. "Course you can ignore my advice. In that case farewell son, we will not meet again."

It was waiting for them close to the edge of the swamp. Clothed in toga and white tribal mask.
"What are you looking for outsider?" It asked.
"I wish to ask for the help of old." Commander answered.
"There is a lot of you asking." It sounded amused.
"Yes, that is true." Commander did not look at army behind him. He did not try to stop them when they followed.
"You may ask."
"Will you take it?"
It looked at him and said in annoyed tone. "Do you even know who you should be asking?"
Commander looked confused.
"Walk into the swamp and ask."
He did not like it, but he did what he was ordered.
"I ask for the help of old." He waited. When suddenly he saw something moving next to him. A hand emerged from the water. Waiting. He offered the spear and it took it. Disappearing shortly.

"You look nice in a dress. Honey." Woman joked.
"Damn it, Victoria. It is called toga." Aster answered.
"Everything worked." Theo said. "Thank you, Speaker."
"Thank you Thesia." Aster said.
Thesia, smiled. "It was a pleasure and I gained nice sum from it."
"Yes, it is good to see that They are generous toward Old Way." Theo joked. "If you do not wish to walk in dresses get better at shadow patch my son."
Aster Boyle glared at his father. "Maybe if I did not have to sort all of the logistics and stewardship related topics because some old man is too lazy to do it I would have more time to improve in other places."
"Army probably gained a day from this." Theo quickly changed the topic. "Gavin might not have to join the fight after all. Talented young lad. He inherited Victoria talent and Aster good head." He added for Thesia sake.
"Sound like an interesting lad." Thesia commented.
"He would probably love to help me convince Mr. Fell of the beast inside." Victoria added.
"Well, we would not be stupid enough to release one of those. They still had to know what they are dealing with." Theo frowned. "Now they will think twice before trying to visit the swamp."
"If they try asking around about they will probably wall swamp off."
"Ah yes, the rumors. The only one part of the swamp is that bad. Gavin like to call it the 'never ending lethal hide and seek tournament area'. Bit long, but quite accurate."

Look, information control is irrelevant. There are two major factions in the local area which might be hiring mercenaries, because anybody else is going to be signing on with one of those two factions. One is the one which the Nameless just abandoned and would be at least as likely to re-enslave or execute them as to hire them, assuming the Nameless were at all interested in working for them in the first place. The second are the invaders, and if you wanted to work for them the time to make the offer would have been during the initial negotiations.

If the goal is to become mercenaries the Nameless have to leave. Not necessarily far- there may be other neighbors who would love to use troops familiar with the area carve off a piece for themselves while the central government is distracted, but nobody local is going to be looking to hire a thousand unproven sellswords at a time for defense or strategic attack unless they're involved in the conflict the Nameless just fled from because the only two targets to use that many mercs against will be able to so stomp anybody but each other that it's better to just capitulate. The only real use for mercs here would be opportunistic raiding, and if you want to go raiding, why not take advantage of the fact that the Nameless are pretty much the third largest armed faction in the area and do the banditry and conquering in their own names?

[X] Convince the Nameless to follow you.

I'm going to have to think about this. It implies heavy setting changes. I'll have rewards and canon/non-canon designation later in the day.
