Call it dissonance with the narrative on my part, but I just can't see how Whitley would have actually managed to endear himself with the Sanctrum group when he has done almost nothing that could allow him to know even a few of the students outside of maybe training with Pyrrah for one turn, and much less to actually convince them to risk their skin to help him.
It's probably just a misunderstanding on my part, but I just can't see it.
That's how I saw it too. It seemed like it was Pyrrha gathering up all the students for Whitley to make his appeal to them. They're hearing him out because of Pyrrha. It's also why I don't have that much confidence with Whitley's public-speaking skills, especially with SDC's dubious rep. Whitley doesn't have the best reputation, as the ship captain that gave us a ride clearly showed. Convincing them to risk their lives for someone that's a sibling of a friend of small town star seems like a bit of a longshot for Whitley.
Intrigue? Do you mean Scheming? Because we don't have an intrigue stat. The thing is that the most likely thing that we will use for hiring the mercs is intrigue... And we have the same mallus as in social
Scheming is for stuff like blackmail, manipulation and lying. Basically everything that is not "making it square".
You might be right in that the mercenaries could require rolls in Social and Command, just like the students. However, because there's a financial element to the option, there's a strong chance we'll be able to use Stewardship since it's used for striking deals. It also happens to be our best skill at the moment, at +30.
