The Winter's Warning
You could barely hide your disappointment when your father sat at the door, with a cup of tea. He was not with Klien or any other servant, but a spot of tea was ready, freshly brewed, and prepared for.
"You have no idea how difficult you have made everything, did you know that?" He said as you sat, kicking your feet up, making him glare at you in anger. "And you have forgotten your manners as well?"
"Oh I haven't forgotten father, in fact, I'm doing everything in my power to make you even madder than my very existence."
"Do you think I believe in you so little that I do not care for you?" He said, gritting his teeth. "I have done everything in my power to make sure you could uphold the Schnee name, and so you would have a choice in what you wish to do with your life!"
He…
He said those words to your face without a hint of irony in them.
Was he blind, deaf… or just like mother? A Drunk who did not care for you, only for… something else entirely. An uncaring force that only worried about… what he wanted, rather than what you wanted, or what was good and proper.
"You dare say those words to me father?" you asked. "After everything, you think you have the right to say such words to me? How I had a choice?"
You chuckled before showing a glyph in your hand. "I never had a choice. Not from you. Ever since I left, I have found out what I am, who I am, and why I am who I am. And you know something? It's because of you."
Your father frowned, but he said nothing. He furrowed his brow, and clenched his fist, but said something. "You are the worst thing in my life. You have been a cruel and abusive fucker, who has taken every good thing in my life, and ruined it. I only became better because I chose to look into the past. Look to someone who is better."
"Nicholas Schnee was a coward in the end. And he lacked vision." Your… father said as he set the tea down. "Your mother would know that better than anyone."
You froze. Before you gritted your teeth. "Father. I will not come back."
"You do not have a choice."
"That is where you are wrong father." You heard the familiar voice of Winter before you smiled and saw her march in with a squad of her comrades.
She was in full… whatever uniform she usually wore on missions, her sword was on her side. "Since Whitley is now a student of Sanctum, he needed a legal guardian to place him in there. I gave him my signature." She replied.
You were stone-faced. You didn't get her signature! Hell, you had just played a sad sob story about dead parents and Chiron just let you in. Though you suspected he knew more… but if he had, you did not notice.
"You did what!?" Father said. "You are out of your legal bounds!"
"No, I am not. Acting as commander of the Argus Garrison, I have been granted several levels of authority of a government official of Atlas. Including that of a judge." She stated.
Your father paled. "You-"
"If I wanted to Father, you would go to prison for the rest of your life, if not executed for Treason," Winter replied. "The only reason I have not said anything yet to General Ironwood, is because my testimony would not be sufficient. But Whitley's?" She glared at you.
"You would not dare." Father started.
"Leave Father, because if I chose to arrest you… you would never see daylight again." She threatened.
You never thought you would be scared for your father. But the ice in your sister's eyes was colder than… well anything you had ever seen before.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Give me one reason not to send you back to Atlas?" Winter said as her troops were gone and you were alone.
"Besides father?" You snarked, earning a glare from her.
"This is serious Whitley. I could lose my job for sticking up to you." She stated. "I have already lied for you, if father decides to look deeper, you could get deported, or worse."
"Yeah, the first time that ever happened." You snarked again, this time earning a slap. "Ow!"
"I always cared for you Whitley, but you chose to go chasing after a ghost instead of trying to find something that was you!" She stated.
"Well, I'm tired of everyone thinking I have to be me!" You shouted. "So why do you think that Grandfather isn't a dream worth emulating!"
Then Winter said something that surprised you. "Because I'm afraid!"
"What?" You whispered.
"I'm afraid that I couldn't be worthy of you." She said, "I ran because of mother, and father… But I would have stayed if you had just asked. If Weiss had just asked. I couldn't live with myself knowing I abandoned you two." She wiped the sole tear from her eye. "I-..."
You found the words for her. "We were all afraid, in some fucked up family… with fucked up parents, too afraid to talk to each other, and finally reveal that we care," you said bitterly. "What the hell is wrong with us?"
That made Winter Laugh. "Just a few snowflakes, trying to find our way in the world."
You laughed. "Thank you Winter."
"Always." She said with a smile, before kissing your forehead. "Stay safe kiddo. And if you need anything, just ask."
You nodded. "Thank you.
Reward: Jacques can no longer take you home. Jacques has a warrant for his arrest if he steps out of Atlas Proper.
Winter offers to help if you just ask.
