The Konoha Twelve - Team Sanity (Kurenai)

Hyuugas could be great medical ninjas too. Maybe they could also try their hand at puppetry?

Haruno Sakura
Hokage Monument, Konoha
Afternoon, Oct. 13, 109 HVE

Sakura sees the earthen walls form around them, then watches as scenes from the past are brought to life, some of which she only read in books or heard about in class. Fascinating... she realizes that it's actually a genjutsu, but the audio and visuals are really good, pretty much lifelike, in fact. This must be a glimpse of what her sensei is capable of...

"You are genin now. This village and its people are counting on you." She paused for several seconds to let that sink in. determination, duty

"Tomorrow, we will meet in the middle of Training Ground Five at eight in the morning. You will each have an hour to summarize and demonstrate all that you know." She beamed at them. "I am sure that you will meet my expectations."

As Kurenai-sensei teleports away in a swirl of petals (a nice jutsu to learn someday), it occurs to the Cherry Blossom once again that being a ninja carries with it a sense of responsibility towards the village. It also occurs to her that she will have to work extra hard, to prove herself worthy of being part of the team. After all, her teammates are from the famous Hyuuga and Aburame clans, the one with the all-seeing eyes and the one with an affinity for bugs. She can't afford to be left behind!

"I guess I should go? I'll have to prepare for tomorrow. Bye Shino-san, Hanabi-san!"

She smiles and waves at them as she leaves.

Tomorrow at eight in the morning, at Training Ground Five. There, she will show what she is capable of.

For now, however, she opts to walk towards home, and review everything that she can do, just to be sure.

((Is this all right?))

Looks good, IMO. Again, up to you how much you want your character to say and do before the test next morning.

@pebbleinthepond @UbeOne @Zedalb Tagging Zedalb, since I'm guessing he'll write his snippet sometime soon too.

Minor detail: y'all were on top of Hokage Mountain, and it takes maybe 10-15 minutes to head all the way back down. So if you headed down together before saying goodbyes, for the sake of flow, one of you could include a throwaway line mentioning that.

As it is, I'm imagining that the three of you said your goodbyes at the top...then y'all awkwardly walked down the same mountain stairs together, each doing your best to ignore each other.

...actually, I'm perfectly fine with that. Kinda adorably awkward. :3

All right, I'll include a line saying that we all walked downstairs before we said our goodbyes and parted ways afterwards.

...Though the way you interpret it as is, makes me laugh. :lol

I'm not the only one who has done that before, right? Saying an earnest goodbye to someone, then realizing that we were still headed in the same direction for a few blocks. >_>

Me too.

Actually, do you guys want the awkwardness to remain, just because?

Edit: Retained the awkward moment.

Yeah I will write it tonight. I was at a concert last night.

1. @pebbleinthepond @UbeOne - The next part for you two will be as you arrive on Training Field Five. Kurenai said to meet at 8am, and she'll show up ten minutes beforehand. Up to y'all to decide when you want to arrive, and what interaction to have before Kurenai is there (if you arrive before her).

@Zedalb - same for you, though you'll have an IC post to briefly respond to first.

2. After that, Kurenai will say some stuff and start the test. I might as well reveal the test now, since there's no trickery involved. Up to 1 hour for each of you to demonstrate as much of what you know as possible. Up to you which skills and topics you want to show off--anything from taijutsu katas to explanations of wilderness cooking recipes you know. Narrated summary is allowed, to avoid getting bogged down in details.

The demonstrations will be done one by one. Meanwhile, the other two genin watch.

(1 post from each of you for the demonstration, and perhaps one post to react to the other demonstrations. You can keep these IC posts short, as few as 1-2 paragraphs. Post it in the OOC first, and I can combine it all into one big IC post.)

--lunch--

Afternoon will be divided into three 2-hour blocks. During each block, Kurenai will chat with each genin about their demonstration and about possible training plans. Meanwhile, the other two genin each have one hour to try to teach each other something new (e.g. a new block against the Gentle Fist).

(Most likely, I'll handle summarizing the chats between Kurenai with each genin, using your input. The genin-teaching-genin parts will need y'all to plan it OOC. You can keep this IC post for the genin pairs short too, just two paragraphs or so if summarizing, a bit more if you add dialogue.)

...and that's all. I hope it sounds more complicated than it actually is; lemme know if you have suggestions. The rationale for most of this is to establish a baseline before I accelerate y'all to missions, instead of having a bunch of training scenes.

3. And for all three of you, you can also do an optional scene of talking with your parents at some point before the morning posts. Or save that conversation for a summarized flashback in a later scene. ^_^

4. Whoops. Almost forgot to mention -- ping me if you need a sanity check about any of your character's abilities. (I still need to get a short list of simple genjutsu to @UbeOne.)

I was hoping to work that out here or the IRC then post the "Catch me if you can" games all at once, probably as I demonstrate or you lecture me for trying. Which ever comes first.

It actually works perfectly, because he is failing for something he could not and is not accounting for. However his clan has a counter to it.

So once he demonstrates and you point out the flaws, he can go and get the jutsu from his father and you and him can start working on it.
(probably by mixing it with a clone jutsu, so he can hide his chakra and create the clones at the same time, so a sensor starts tracking the clone, a false lead who can go the wrong way)

Either way, at this point, he will simply go into a nearbye store that has a view of the one you are in, as a few bugs make a circle and relay line to pass him info about if you leave.

  • When stopped by Matsu, ask him.
  • Ask restaurant she went into about her, ask if she is a regular.
  • Rush home ask father
  • Follow leads from father mostly home location to ask local restaurants if she is regular, find one she is ask, normal order.
  • Create file from everything known
  • Share file with teammates, ask what they have learned or if they will ask there family before meeting up in the morning, probably a few minutes early to share info.

Sweet, that works. Could you write a few lines from Shino's POV when he first reaches the non-descript fence after the run? You're having him temporarily wait across the street, right?

Some basic info, lemme know if you need more (or if I screwed up the consistency):

~4 meter high wooden fence, fairly quiet, only street sounds as people bustle by. The fence seems to go around the whole block from where you encountered it, though there may be an entrance on the other side. The previous times Kurenai hopped fences during the run, they were simply low fences between streets and parks, not fences for an actual property. The scent from the female bug is lingering and continuing to waft through the air, indicating that it's still on the property, unlike the fainter trail during the chase. There's an izakaya across the street, mostly empty of patrons at this hour (~5PM).

A series of bugs fly out, to the roofs. I sigh, the sudden stop probably means I am caught, which is a failure on my end. The bugs land as individuals, on several nearby roofs, and the information they see is relayed back to me a moment later as they one by one return to me. I debate with making a bug clone and henging it, a human-ish scout, immune to genjutsu, but sadly I am trying to save chakra for tomorrow. Instead I go into the Iiakaya and order some tea, having a series of bugs circle the area and set up a relay line for the information. I do not know that I am caught yet, though I may be so, I have them move slowly taking to high ground to see down from over any fence or obstruction.

@Zedalb Does that work?

Edit: Nevermind, I'll just directly post it up in the IC thread. Ping me if there's anything else you'd like to add.

Anyway, for all three of you, I think we may need to wait a little bit for the other groups to catch up till we move on to tomorrow. I'm not yet sure if there's a plan for the genin to chat with each other yet, or to head straight to tomorrow after everyone is caught up.

And...there was Shino. Oh my goodness, was he actually trying to rush after her immediately? Aww, she'd have to remind him to be more discreet in the future. Though she was already a third of the way down Sarutobi's face, any decent sensor would have noticed him.

Hmm. Ok. Kurenai stopped using shunshin once she reached ground level, and settled into a brisk walk--fast enough such that Shino would be kept at a frantic rush, slow enough such that he would keep up instead of taking a break and considering other options first.

She plotted a route such that Shino would be forced to take shortcuts that would make him rush by right when certain people walked into the area. He'd be just close enough for them to identify Shino and pique their curiosity. Through the market, in front of the academy, over several fences. She kept her chakra sensing up--while it was usually only useful for short to medium ranges, the one lump of chakra rushing after her was pretty easy to identify. Yup, he was still following. And he didn't seem to be slowing down or noticing the attention he was getting as he rushed down the streets.

Finally, as she reached the western part of town, she jumped one last fence to enter a non-descript establishment. She was greeted warmly by the people already there.

Early Evening, Friday October 14th, 109 HVE*

Shino halts when he arrives at the latest fence his sensei has hopped over. This one is different. Over twice his height, solid wood. The previous ones were simply low fences between streets and parks, not fences for an actual property. The surroundings are fairly quiet, only street sounds as people bustle by. The fence seems to go around the whole block from what Shino could see. Maybe there is an entrance on the other side? The scent from the female bug lingers and continues to waft through the air, indicating that it's still on the property, unlike the much fainter scent during his chase. Good. As long as his sensei didn't wash the scent off her shoe, he could easily keep tracking her.

He sighs, the sudden stop might mean he's caught, which is a failure on his end. He sends a series of bugs to fly out to the roofs barely visible inside the fence, along with bugs around the fence to monitor the block. They'd take turns coming back to report.

Momentarily, Shino debates making a bug clone and henging it, a human-ish scout, immune to genjutsu, but he reconsiders in order to save chakra for tomorrow. Instead, he enters an izakaya across the street, mostly empty of patrons at this hour. He orders some tea, and sends out a series of bugs to circle the area and set up a relay line for the information. He decides that he doesn't know whether he is caught yet, though it may be so. Muta and several of his special jounin friends saw his cousin, the clan heir, blaze past. Didn't he just graduate today?

Curious, they decided to investigate. They catch up as Shino enters an izakaya, sending waves of bugs over and into an establishment across the street.

"...huh."

"Muta, why is your clan heir surveying the Hot-Hot Lady's Hot Springs Club?!"

Shino Aburame
Konohagakure Streets
Evening, Friday October 14th, 109 HVE*

It...had taken some time to extract himself from the izakaya. More and more people had streamed in after work, and Muta's friends kept telling the story to every new customer. He almost groaned when he realized that this wasn't going to end any time soon. It was a Friday evening. Maybe he should assert clan heir privileges and try to flee? His only consolation was that they did give him a fair amount of information regarding what regular Konohagakure ninja knew about his sensei, in between waxing poetic about her beauty. And her kindness. And her vivacity. And her...

When he finally extricated himself, he rushed home to ask his father for more info instead. Shibi Aburame, his father, had been waiting in his office. His father simply nodded and immediately gave a prepared presentation. Kurenai's history, her known skills, her most familiar friends, why he believes that she would be a good sensei for his son. Shino took notes.

In particular, his father pointed out that:

1) She is an experienced tutor well known among the clans, often hired to work with their heirs. As confirmed by former Aburame who had went on missions with her, she would be very respectful of Aburame techniques. She'd likely allot a lot of time for Shino to work with his clan, and would find ways to combine Aburame techniques with other disciplines.

2) While she is known for being a top genjutsu expert in Konoha, she has a diversity of skills that's usually only seen among Uchiha and ANBU. Her knowledge of taijutsu, speed techniques, stealth, genjutsu, and the human psyche would do much to mitigate Aburame weaknesses.

3) She is a rising star. Genin at 9, chunin at 13, then stayed chunin for years...but must have eventually had some breakthroughs. Breakthroughs that not only helped her jump to jounin four years ago, but also now make her considered to among the elite of the Konohagakure jounin. Over the years, she has completed approximately 150 C-Rank, 220 B-Rank, 130 A-Rank, and an unknown number of S-Rank missions.

Shibi did look at Shino a bit oddly, though, when Shino asked about what local restaurants she frequents. Shino explains that it's to find out her normal orders. Shibi shakes his head. Sure, that might be useful info in some contexts, but Shino had to prioritize.

At the end of Shibi's presentation, he handed his son a small folder about Kurenai. Nothing confidential, but it would still be dangerous in enemy hands.

He says, "One last thing, my son. When you have the chance, do talk with Torune. We have been...concerned about him. None of the other clan members have been able to connect with him."

He turns to his son and gives him a firm hug, before he heads out to do other tasks.

So your concerned we are to far ahead, I will go talk with hanabi and Sakura, IC as I said I would here then.

Gives us something to do as we wait for the other (less good, more slow) teams.

Boreddd (not really, just procrastinating). So time to figure out some basic jutsu stuff.

@UbeOne

I think I'll switch Sakura's general purpose Sleight of Hand genjutsu to these:

Genjutsu: Double Vision
Rank: D
Description: This is a simple genjutsu that causes the opponent to see doubles of everything.

Genjutsu: Wounded Gazelle
Rank: D
Description: This genjutsu can create fake blood and wounds on the user's body to fool the enemy that he/she is wounded. The illusion is only visual; it cannot trick the sense of smell.

Genjutsu: Eye Dust
Rank: D
Description: This simple genjutsu makes a person feel as if there was a speck of dust in their eye, irritating it. Although not damaging, it can cause the victim to lose concentration and also make him continually rub his eyes in an attempt to get the nonexistent dust speck out.

Genjutsu Kai (Release)
Rank: D
Description: A technique that destroys/cancels out a genjutsu attempted on the user once it is recognized as an illusion. Momentarily disrupts the user's own flow of chakra. Can always cancel genjutsu up to the level of this technique.

Also, I'm tentatively considering labeling jutsu ranks by the user's skill level, rather than making the jutsu have an inherent rank. Makes it easier to label skills in general too.

E.g.:

Hanabi:
Ninjutsu
- bunshin (D)
- henge (D)
- kawarimi (D)
- water release (D)
- water release: water clone (D)

Taijutsu
- gentle fist style (B)
- dexterity (C)
- agility (C)
- strength (D)
- constitution (D)

Chakra Manipulation
- chakra control (B+)
- chakra molding (C)
- chakra capacity (E)
- tree walking (D)
- water walking (D)

Sakura:
Ninjutsu
- bunshin (D)
- henge (D)
- kawarimi (D)
- water release (D)
- water release: water bullet (D)

Taijutsu
- standard leaf academy style (E)
- dexterity (D)
- agility (D)
- strength (E)
- constitution (D)

Genjutsu
- genjutsu kai/release (D) - A technique that destroys/cancels out a genjutsu attempted on the user once it is recognized as an illusion. Momentarily disrupts the user's own flow of chakra. Can always cancel genjutsu up to the level of this technique.
- double vision technique (D) - This is a simple genjutsu that causes the opponent to see doubles of everything.
- wounded gazelle technique (D) - This genjutsu can create fake blood and wounds on the user's body to fool the enemy that he/she is wounded. The illusion is only visual; it cannot trick the sense of smell.
- eye dust technique (D) - This simple genjutsu makes a target feel as if there was a speck of dust in their eye, irritating it. Although not damaging, it can cause the target to lose concentration and also make him continually rub his eyes in an attempt to get the nonexistent dust speck out.

Chakra Manipulation
- chakra control (C+)
- chakra molding (C)
- chakra capacity (E)

Shino:
Ninjutsu
- bunshin (D)
- henge (D)
- kawarimi (D)
- Bug Clone (C) - Using the Kikaichū bugs living in their body, the user can create a copy of themselves or anyone else they choose. The clone falls apart into its component bugs when struck. Because they're made of bugs, the clones can reform almost instantly. Range: Mid.
- Bug Gathering (C) - Allows the user to draw bugs from the surrounding location to the user. By simply touching a surface, the user releases a small web of chakra that draws bugs towards the user.

Taijutsu
- standard leaf academy style (D)
- dexterity (D)
- agility (D)
- strength (D)
- constitution (D)

Chakra
- chakra control (C)
- chakra molding (C)
- chakra capacity (C)
- tree walking (D)
