Speaking of the Otomo holdings, if it's 1165 their new castle might actually have been built by now considering they held Winter Court in 1168. After all, Otosan-uchi burned down in 1159. So chances are decent Kyuden Otomo is up and ready by the time this insanity occurs.

I would say... Probably not actually. If they held Winter Court in 1168 I would say that Kyuden Otomo was probably finished no earlier than 1167, given the need to present strong imperial families to the Empire - that's just my take on the matter, though.

I think Great Clans have major construction rules in the Crab section, Kaiu represent, but a castle worthy of hosting the Emperor would take a pretty long time to pull off with the narrow window for securing materials and the labor necessary.

Doesn't actually exist yet. Iweko is Naseru's successor canonically.
Exactly. The Oriole get established, and right after that the empress says 'oh, I need the best weaponsmith in the entire empire'.
*Looks in direction of Oriole representative*
'they'll have to be very artistic...'
*Orioles perk up*
"Ah, of course, the answer was in front of my eyes. I'm seeing... walls! Get me a kaui immediately!"

To be fair a brand new Kaiu armorsmith that's graced by their ancestor and an inherited set of tools can pump a crafting roll up by 5k3 with a void point if my math is right.

By Rank 3, and with access to the Kaiu forge? Forget about it. :V

Yeah, the Kaiu are the gold standard for a reason. It's because they know their shit.

The Oriole are specialists who are fantastic at swordsmithing, and when they hit their stride, they can forge swords fit for an Emperor, but Kaiu are brilliant at everything, not just swordsmithing.

Actually, as written I think the Tsi are better all rounders. Can't check but iirc they get all sorts of nifty 1k0 bonuses and things.

Probably something where who has the mechanical edge changes each edition...

Rank 2 is +2k1 for my personal void points instead of +1k1, if I'm using my own gear

At rank 3 I can spend a my action to give a + [rank]k1 to the skill roll of a guy nearby using my stuff. Like if you're wearing one of my kimonos and rolling etiquette or if you're fighting with one of my swords and using kenjutsu / wearing my armor and rolling defense.

Rank 4 is 'spend a void point, make attacks with your homemade weapon as simple actions for the next [rounds]

Rank 5 is 'automatically get a special quality on a weapon by spending all your void points'

My abilities seem to be pushing me towards crafting my own equipment, as well as making stuff for the party (The rank 3 ability in particular seems like a nice way to honorably get an advantage in a duel). Hopefully this isn't a a metaplot with a strict schedule and ticking timebomb...

Let's see...widespread unrest, famine, disease, and outright war.

Best to hope you're caught in a siege I think. :V
I suppose I can carry an incomplete masterwork with me, and work on it a little in each place we stop. That'd actually give it a pretty cool backstory once it was finished.

EDIT: According to the wiki there's a 'water hammer citizen' advantage that reduces crafting time? That would be handy to have (and I levelled up my water ring, so I might be able to qualify for it). Does anyone have Strongholds of the Empire who'd be willing to look it up for me?

Here you go. Copy of the three Water Hammer traits

@Faintrosity

New Advantage: Inheritance: Water Hammer Armor
-You have been bequeathed a suit of armor that was forged upon the great scale of the Water Dragon in the heart of Suigeki Toshi. Only a handful of such suits exist, and few indeed are honored to wear them. Your armor has its Reduction value increased by 2. The point cost of this Advantage is dependant upon the type of armor granted. Ashigaru armor is worth 4 points, light armor 7 points, heavy armor 12 points, and riding armor 15 points.

New Advantage: Water Hammer Citizen: [Social] (3 points)Your time spent within Water Hammer City has given you an affinity for crafting, even if you have not devoted your life to the pursuit of such things. You gain one rank in a Craft Skill of your choice (this may not take you over the maximum beginning rank of 4). When determining the time required to craft any particular item, the cost of the item is considered one coin type smaller for you (for example, an item that has a cost measured in koku would determine its crafting time as if it were measured in bu, and an item with a cost measured in bu would determine the time as if it were measured in zeni).

New Disadvantage: Water Hammer Stigma [Social] (2pts) Being raised within a city devoted to the pursuit of perfection above all else has left you a little desensitized to the social niceties that are so important elsewhere in the Empire. Artisans and smiths from Water Hammer City tend to be somewhat brusque, after all, and completely absorbed in their work. As a result, you suffer a penalty of -1k0 on Social Skill Rolls made with members of any clan other than the Dragon Clan.

-Edit
I own pretty much all the 4e books (And most of the old ones as well), so if you need me to dip into the mechanics for whatever reason just @ me and I'll get back to you when I can.

Akodo Nori
Feel free to put a character down!

Bit of a WIP, but I'll get her over here before sleep wins. Crunch is all there, just need the 20 questions and gear.

Akodo Nori
Age: 23
School: Akodo Bushi
Insight: Rank 1 (145)
Honour/Glory/Status: 6.7 (7.7)/1.1/1.0

Appearance: Nori favors simple kimono, plain jewelry if she wears any at all, and lately an eyepatch. The sclera of her right eye is discolored, going black toward the inner corner, while her left eye is a maho ruined mess. The eye itself has been burned down to a hard black orb set in a socket of gnarled scar tissue, and the pupil glows with a sickly yellow light.

Background: A soldier since her gempukku nine years ago, she served in the Lion armies in most major engagements up to the War of the Rich Frog and was in the field when the Rain of Blood fell. Madness descended with it. They weren't just fighting the Unicorn any more, and as Lion turned on Lion it was all she could do to rally those unaffected or resisting the tainted liquid to cut their way out. Her father and brother were not so lucky, and in the end she slew her father, took his sword and head, and drove her brother off with grievous wounds of his own. During the course of the melee she was struck in the face with maho from a rabid Kitsu shugenja and barely survived after being carried out by her soldiers.

Also, you gain a bonus of +1k0 to the total of all attack rolls on your first melee attack against an opponent in a skirmish, or against any opponent who has declared a Raise on an attack against you since your last turn. You add only a total of 1k0 for an enemy who Raises against you, no matter how many times they actually Raised.

  1. "The Lion."
  2. "The Akodo."
  3. "I am bushi, from a line of warriors, in a family of warriors, in a clan of war."
  4. "Before the rains fell, or after? Before I was told I looked like one of Akodo-no-kami's own daughters, fair, strong, and polished without vanity. Now...well it's another kami they think I spawned from."
  5. "I will restore our honor. That we should have been so deeply affected by this curse when the Dragon, the Phoenix came through relatively whole shows how deep the corruption, the complacency ran. No more."
  6. "My father. When I burnt his head after returning to Shiro sano Ken Hayai and heard the news coming in from the rest of the empire, I saw that his betrayal and the shame he brought me and my soon to be late mother was the truth of his soul. We give lip service to our devotion, but in the end the rain laid bare the truth of who could resist the lure of the darkness within. I will never speak his name again, but I will remember and thank him for that last lesson."
  7. "My strengths? A keen eye, steady hand, and the finest martial training in the empire. Weaknesses? None that matter. Leave the court to the Crane, meditation to the Dragon, and low and common pastimes to the Scorpion and Mantis. We each have our path to follow, and no need to stray from it. "
  8. "What is there to think about? I obey its precepts, but to receive their benefits one must reciprocate. Where there is respect there is courtesy, support--compassion. I do not follow bushido for the benefit of others apart from my lord and ancestors, nor does it matter if they understand my way."
  9. "We...we were great. Once. Now... Well, spring storms shake down dead branches so that new growth can begin. We will flourish again."
  10. "Yes. Akodo Giri. Our parents arranged the match and he serves as yojimbo to a historian in Kyuden Ikoma. We rarely see one another."
  11. "Prejudice? No. There is no need for that when one has simply to look at recent history. The Phoenix, pleading for our help only to turn and butcher our advisors when our own lands come under attack. The Unicorn, allowing their protectorates to seek new masters so they could turn and attack unannounced like honorless dogs. As I hold myself accountable for the actions of my clan, so do I hold others to the same standard."
  12. "At the moment? Ikoma Amaya-dono. She did an admirable job of maintaining the discipline of the garrison at the Swift Sword, and saw to it that the none of us returning from the west were unduly attacked or punished for our brother and sister's failings."
  13. "I love...I love the smell of tea and the long grass of the plains drying in the summer sun. When I was little I would hide in it, imagine it my own little fortress with nothing but the blue sky overhead. As for my least favorite thing? Hmm. Bad poetry I suppose. It demonstrates a lack of care and respect from the writer toward their audience."
  14. "I have picked up the habit of avoiding others eyes. When my patch is off the looks I receive are discomforting, reminders of things I should not regret. It's better to be busy, so I tend to find some small task I can occupy myself with while speaking, or focus on something else."
  15. "Anger is the hardest. Not that I'll be goaded in to action, or even embarassing myself with an outburst, but I will not show restraint when wisdom might suggest it and if you earn my wrath I will hunt you to the ends of the earth. As for other emotions? I was dry eyed as my father's body burned, shed not a tear when my mother committed jigai. The Ikoma laugh and cry for me."
  16. "To shame oneself is to shame us all and bring dishonor on Akodo-no-kami's legacy. If the fault is one of incompetence it falls to me to correct it, teach them, and ensure it does not happen again. If the fault is personal and demonstrates a lack of character I would likely choose the Deathseekers for them over seppuku. In the end we must be forgiving."
  17. "They would say nothing. My father's head rots on a spike and my mother's ashes rest with her ancestor's."
  18. "The Lion clan has fallen. There was a time when we were preeminent, the finest fighting force in the Empire, Right Hand to the Hantei, and none dared question that. Now...Toturi-heika sends his legions and the Dragon to do our work, the Shogun stands at the wall, Matsu-dono rules well but...this is not how things were. We are defenders of the Empire, its traditions, its history. Nothing but ills have befallen us since the Akodo dissolved and the Championship passed to others, and...I am loathe to say it but the heavens do not smile upon the line of Toturi. Something must be done before everything rots and falls to dust."
  19. "I make my observances to my ancestors and Bishamon before battle, but the best way I know to worship is practice, battle, and more practice. I hear the voices of past generations in the wind of my blade and each stroke is prayer enough for me."
  20. "I will die with the blood of my enemy on my sword, surrounded by the fallen on the field of battle, my honor impeachable and my demise bringing glory to my lord."

Nori is very cool. Yet another member for the Black Sheep Brigade!

I'm guessing that the eye should work like a less useful version of the R1 Seppun Guardsman ability - spend a void point to see kansen sort of deal. Having it be a passive perception bonus seems a bit too good.

Hida Kenta
Figured I'd join the formating revolution. This is Kenta's Final form.

Hida Kenta

Age: 20
School: Hida Bushi
Insight: Rank 1 (146)
Honour/Glory/Status: 4.3/1.8/1.5
Unspent Experience: 1
Spent Experience: 7

Appearance: Kenta is a large man, with a short well groomed beard and long hair. His nose has clearly been broken repeatedly and the exposed skin on his arms are covered with a series of scars from his time on the Wall.

Background: Kenta completed his gempukku when he was 15, bringing back the head of a Goblin Warlord. Originally assigned to the garrison at Kaui castle, he only served there for six months until he was chosen as a Yojimbo to a minor Yasuki Courtier named Tenno. Finding he much prefered the company of the bombastic Yasuki, and the relative comfort of the assignments, he successfully bid to be assigned to Tenno's staff indefinitely.

Eventually Yasuki Tenno's duties brought him and Kenta to a small Lion castle for the winter court of 1161. It was there he met Akodo Sachi, a fellow yojimbo serving a lesser Lion daimyo and a fast friendship was struck. Kenta was overjoyed when, as part of the sealing of agreements between the Crab and Lion, it was arranged that Sachi would join the crab as his wife. He swore a debt of friendship for Tenno's efforts at securing his future. Kenta was released from Tenno's direct service in 1164, but the two men have maintained frequent contact via letter.

However in 1164 during a court Sachi attended as yojimbo, an insult was made toward Hida Kuon by Doji Takume. Sachi's superior rose to the bait, and a duel was called. She was cut down by Takume's champion and her superior committed jagei.

Kenta dreams on avenging his fallen wife, but does not know how. At the moment, he simply looks for an opportunity to get a shot at Takume. He hasn't fought the shadowlands in years, instead serving as Yojimbo for much of his career.

Then the Rain of Blood happened, and Kenta's duties abruptly changed. He was sent north to answer Naseru's call. He had barely arrived when several messengers caught up to him, notifying him that his entire family had fallen in the aftermath of the Rain of Blood, either to the rains themselves or putting down the rampages of the tainted peasantry in their lands.

It is with shock Kenta realizes he is the last of his line.

Hida Kenta has taken 13 wounds and is suffering from no status affects.
Rank 1: The Way of the Crab
The Hida bushi is the epitome of 'heavy infantry,' able to endure harsh blows and deliver crushing attacks in return. You may ignore TN penalties for wearing heavy armor for all skills except Stealth. When using a Heavy Weapon, you gain a bonus of +1k0 to the total of all damage rolls.

KATA:
Name: Strength in Arms Style
Ring: Water 4
Schools: Hida Bushi, Ichiro Bushi, Moto Bushi
Effect: Once Per turn, while wielding a heavy weapon, you may use your strength instead of your agility for attack rolls.

Heritage
Mixed: Due to various mishaps and misfortunes, you are the last of your line, and have all your family's titles and responsibilities resting squarely on your shoulders. You gain 0.5 Status but you are also under a 3-point Obligation to the Crab to keep your family line alive.

Masteries:
Heavy Weapons: Enemy reduction reduced by 2
Advantages=[3pts]
Large 3pts: When using a heavy weapon, roll an additional +1k0. You are large and imposing and may have difficulties not standing out in a crowd.

Disadvantages=[11pts (10 bonus points gained max]
Lost Love (Hida Sachi) 3pts: All Kenta's TN's are increased by 5 when his late wife is mentioned, due to melancholy and remembrance. This lasts until negated by spending a void. Happens maximum of twice a day with a minimum of two hours between checks.
Sworn Enemy (Doji Takume) 5pts: Takume is a rank 3 Doji.
Driven (Avenge Akodo Sachi) 2pts: Kenta will risk almost everything, including his honor, for the chance to kill or dishonor Doji Takume.
Obligation to Crab (Keep family line alive) 3pts:

1. Hida Kenta is a Crab Clan Samurai

2. Hida Kenta is a member of the Moshibaru vassal family of the Hida.

3. Hida Kenta is a Bushi.

4. Hida Kenta is a large man, standing at 6 foot 3. He keeps his beard short and neatly trimmed, but his hair is long and meticulously kept. His upper body, particularly the arms, are covered with scars from both blade and claw. People spending time with him will notice that he treats his equipment with almost reverent care.

5. He wishes to serve his clan with honor. Secondary to that he would like to avenge himself upon the crane that got his new wife killed. He also fervently hopes to avoid a posting on the Wall, he's seen that crap and has gotten comfortable with the generally known dangers of the courts.

6. Kenta has two sisters and 4 brothers ranging from 11 years older to 4 years younger. The siblings have always been close, and he would take their side on most any issue at the drop of a Koku. Two serve in the Legions, 3 on the wall, and the rest serve directly as their lord requires. Unfortunately the Rain of Blood took all of them away, each falling to taint or the tainted.

7. Kenta's greatest weakness is his smoldering hatred for the Crane. While he holds special hate in his heart for Doji Takume for the death of his wife, this has slowly started to poison his outlook on the whole clane. For a yojimbo who is often required at court for whatever reason, this may cause him or his lord trouble. He is also nowhere near as good a yojimbo as he thinks he is. His greatest strength is his sense loyalty to his friends. He will risk life and honor to help those few he trusts and holds in high regard.

8. Bushido is a nice thought, but he doesn't have that dedication to it that he hears the lion do. He greatly respected his wife's habits and comportment, but the deeper meanings eluded his understanding.

9. The Crab are who allows the Empire the freedom to do whatever they want, and the empire mostly wants to ignore that and bicker about who owns that and which clan's honor is least tarnished. Only the Unicorn and Lion are worthy of respect, but even they do not fully appreciate what the Crab have done for them.

10. Kenta was married for several years, but his Wife Sachi was cut down in an Iaijutsu duel instigated by Doji Takume. He is noncommittal about remarriage, and would like to wait until he has dealt with Takume. With the death of all his kin in the Rain of Blood, he is duty bound to find a match regardless of personal inclinations.

11. He's starting to hate the Crane. He treats Heiman well due to his time training Budoka and the service of Crab heiman in the War against the shadowlands. He gives monks no additional respect and is not especially pious. Like most crab he utterly despises the forces of the fallen brother.

12. He owes a debt to Yasuki Tenno, who he has served many times in the last 3 years. The two have come to an understanding of sorts, and Tenno kept Kenta from charging off after Takume when he found out about his wife. Tenno is also the one who ensured news of your family's fate reached you in a timely manner, and keeps whatever inheritance you have due until you can return to Crab lands to collect them.

13. He hates paintings and origami. After being required to attend so many courts playing the same games of "who draws crap" and "fold this you brute" he's started to imagine terrible things happening to any particular piece just to break the monotony. He really enjoys Kemeri, though he has. absolutely. no. skill.

14. Kenta is meticulously clean and well groomed at all times, and keeps his equipment in pristine condition. After all, an unkempt appearance in court detracts from the ability of the courtier you are serving. He does have a habit of hooking his thumbs into his Obi when he speaks to people, a habit he took up to avoid placing his hand on his katana when talking to those he disliked in a social setting.

15. Kenta is friendly and welcoming for the most part. Even when he dislikes someone, although in that case it is easy to tell he is faking. He no longer pretends friendliness to Cranes, although he is still polite. References to his wife will draw an irrational rage or depression, depending on the circumstances of the statement. He is terrified of deep water, even though he can swim. He witnessed a skull tide once, and still has nightmares about it.

16. If it was a public and minor breach he would assign them onerous duties for a few weeks, or apply physical punishment in the form of excessive training. A private breach would be ignored if Kenta agreed with the reasoning behind it, or punished the same as a public one. A major breach would be punished by casting them out of the clan or telling them to "search for Hida".

17. Both are dead. Were they alive they would say that Kenta was too focused on his dead wife, and that his obsessions are only going to bring him additional pain. They are proud of his career so far, and would be glad that his duties typically put him far from the Shadowlands. Also that he needs to get on with his life, regret is a great sin after all.

18. Kenta plans to train into a hunter of men, to better seek out and destroy people like the bloodspeakers who have taken nearly everything from him.

19. He's not very religious. He gives offerings to Lord Sun and the Kami, but pretty much ignores the fortunes

20. He cannot die until his line is secure. Afterward he will spend his remaining days killing Tsukai until his luck runs out.

The R3 you mean? I'll need to come at it fresh. I was sort of combining the idea of Spirit touch with the shugenja Sense as I imagined it, since the former is basically a mini Sense/Commune combo keying off of Awareness, but I wouldn't be so interested in pulling specific information from them apart from their presence or echoes of that presence (in the case of clever-boots banishing). Not quite sure how to word it right now, but I do think the void cost on top of a seven point advantage is a bit steep.

Yeah, I'll also want to look at the books & confirm. The main problem with the advantage is how useful it is - a 7 point cost is steep, but a 7 point ability that grants an immediate auto identify on maho-tsukai, pekkle, tainted food, tainted water, and probably more uses that I'm not thinking of right away is way too good not to have major drawbacks, especially in a campaign where those will be major challenges for the party to face.

If Void is too steep, maybe a price in Wounds, as the ruined eye oozes blood? Or something else? I will have to think about it a bit more.

The presence of Kansen around a person does not necessaraly mean they are Tsukai. They could be cursed by a Tsukai for instance, or the Kansen my be fucking with them or feeding on their negative emotions. I don't see any reason it would identify tainted food at all. Pekkle are specifically immune to casual detection effects as well. Kansen will be pretty common throughout the empire due to the Rain

And then there's the social side if it. She can't just accuse people freely, and should her eye become known (I'm assuming she'll have to take off the eyepatch to try and "see" kansen)...well, let's just say no one's gonna be eager to take her at her word looking as she does.

Hmm. Okay, I think that I was thinking that the kansen would be everywhere that there was Taint, as opposed to just being uncommon wandering demon type entities. An advantage that lets you see evil spirits is way less problematic than one that lets you see the Taint - that was my mistake. Never mind Mina, you should be fine.
