The Gamer Discussion, Fic Ideas, and Recommendation Thread

That could definitely work and could be really interesting. I actually toyed with the idea of going the support route and doing the rare Crafting type Gamer, which works pretty well in the MHA setting. Combining the two wouldn't be too hard.

But yeah. Essentially this.
It actually works out really really well, since One for All is the result of mixing a quirk that stockpiles energy and a quirk that can be passed on. In canon it results in a power where it gets stronger for each person that inherits it, but just changing how they mixed could result in a power that gets stronger the longer the user has it and that can be passed along. While all this doesn't mean I HAVE to make Deku still get the One for All, I really want to just because of how nicely it works out
Turns out someone made this fic already last year on FF.net. Still it's a good idea and it'd be interesting to see your take on it.
It's kind of explicitly noted as noteworthy in-story that Emma didn't have a trigger event they're aware of, which implies there's something going on.
My theory is that Taylor triggered as Gaia and started giving random people around her Mana and Natural Abilities. Possibly acting as an infection vector so that as those people leave the city, even the ones who just got mana without an Ability, it will spread throughout the world.
In a DC/Gamer crossover wouldn't it be interesting if instead of summoning the four classical elements The Gamer could summon avatars/aspects/creations of the four fundamental forces of DC ala Kindred?

For people who don't know the Kindred were basically personifications of:
The Speed Force - what makes the Flash fast and controls motion to the point of breaking both the time and reality barriers.
The Emotional Spectrum - what powers every flavor of Lantern from Green to Violet, able to effect and see emotions as well as create constructs
Cosmic energy - Starlight, the classical fundamental forces.
Magic - ... magic.

It would be Op but then again all Gamers are.

Each one would need to start small and it'd probably have similar limits as Gamer familiars ie they only have skills that their Gamer knows but in element form.
Alternatively the Speed Force, Emotional Spectrum, Cosmic Energy and Magic could be skill trees. So like, there are a huge number of ways to access the speed force with different advantages. So whittle that down to seven (using the emotional spectrum as a base) and have each be the "mother skill" of their tree which will be added to all subskills. Do the same for cosmic forces and schools of magic and then have it so that if you max out all the Mother Skills in each grouping they either evolve into the skill Kindred or you get it as a Title which gives you a massive bonus to that grouping. Might even be one of the arc quests.

EDIT: I hadn't actually read it when I posted it but based on the first two chapters it's not great. Very derivative and there were huge timeskips that were somewhat undefined.
Well the Ult of the Emotional Spectrum would be White Lantern skilltree
Did the Kindred of the ES have White?

That one was actually linked back on page 2, and is why I wanted to write my own. I really liked the idea, but couldn't get more than a couple chapters into it because it's kind of a mess.

I've just read the latest Gamer chapter and loved seeing him using his Familiars/Elementals. Then I thought how awesome it would be if there was a Gamer fic' where instead of being based on JRPGs his abilities were based on Mon Games.

Then I thought The Gamer/Pokemon cross, complete with Pokemon shaped Familiars and mechanics (along with Z moves and mega evolutions).

Now I'm wondering if it should actually take place in the Gamer setting because, let's be honest, the setting doesn't get enough love. My only issue is the relative lack of info we have on it, or so it feels like.

Thoughts and/or suggestions to help me fill this idea out?

Well we know a bit. Mainly that the entire thing is Masquerade Society with heavily factionalised trash operating under Might Makes Right policies. I'm 90% sure the best solution is killing all the adults and raising the kids to actually be moral.

Then again, I've missed the last few chapters, did their society improve when I wasn't looking?

World is kinda improving since the (spoiler) Artificial God Arc Company (spoiler) started interfering with the world but now it seems to have a crazy cult that's after the main character and the Loli for some reason.

So, no, not really. Though the Dragon Emperor city doesn't seem too bad.

Personally, I've been dabbling with the idea of a Gamer SI being born in Dark City, y'know, that city that has two groups in a gang war to decide who becomes the official Gym, and well, it hasn't gotten a lot of attention.

Granted, that might be because I used an Anime-Only town, and leghtened the time the conflict has been going on from 2 years to a little over a decade.

I found something with a great base for the luck stat. Might fit better as a perk then a numbered stat.
Ech, I'm still a bit iffy on using Luck as a Stat for anything else except Loot Drops when I write The Gamer killing a lot of Zombies for materials and EXP.

Also, anybody here read Douluo Dalu, or any other Manhua?

I've been meaning to revive an old fic of mine, and I'd like to hear some thoughts on how the stuff from Douluo Dalu would be handled in the Gamer System.

I plan on giving the MC a Speed Attack System Beast Spirit: Thunder Bird/Rok, a Spirit with a Major Thunder affinity, and a minor Wind affinity.

Not too sure what I'll have the Spirit Rings give, aside from Passive Skills and Stat Boosts, as the MC can just make new skills.

So, I wanted to rec some stories. I know that these are not your traditional Gamer stories but they use the game system all the same. So without further adieu:

To break the world To Break The World | RoyalRoadL
Its a VRMMO story set 10 years after the world's most successful VRMMO had been released. A large area of the world had been discovered and the undiscovered land was the kind of place where hardcore gamers would have difficulty themselves. The world had stabilized and slowly started being used for tourism. Seeing that hus favorite game had lost its spirit, in a moment of selfishness the MC plans to upset the game's balance. What does he do? He bombs every single important place in the game. This massively changes the landscape of the world and eliminates many of the important NPC's. The rest of the story is based on the repercussions of his actions and the dynamics now present after the Breaking. Highly recommend by me.

The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound | RoyalRoadL

Earth underwent a sudden magical apocalyse where many areas of it were shifted around and monsters and other magic stuff started appearing. Our protagonist gets stuck in the safe zone of a dungeon. Now, the problem is that the only way to enter and leave dungeons is to have a class and be above level 10. Guess who doesn't fulfill both criterias? The only other way to exit it is to kill the boss. Now, the premise may seem a little lame but this shit is addictive as hell. There is a reason why it has been on the top of the weekly lists for a long time. Recommended for its awesome fight scenes.

The New World The New World | RoyalRoadL

This is one of the rare gamer type stories where the MC focuses on strength and other physical stats. The author took inspiration from Randidly so the starting is almost the same but rapidly diverges from there. This one is recommended for its strangely original story and punches.

The Great Tower The Great Tower | RoyalRoadL

Now, I am just going to post the summary of the story here, and you can make what you want of it. The story is on hiatus since the author is focusing on Randidly

Due to unsatisfactory ratings, the social entertainment program that was humanity has been cancelled. But the studio executives of the multiverse are anything but wasteful; every human has been entered in as contestants in the popular program "The Great Tower," where challengers must fight and struggle, seeking the treasures that await at the top.

Before humanity is thrown into the meat grinder, everyone is given a chance to sell parts of themselves in exchange for a little boost. One young man seizes this chance, selling everything. Even his humanity.

Nameless, Raceless, and without any clear memory of the past, he is thrown into the bottom level of the tower, with one goal. Survival.

The Arcane Emperor The Arcane Emperor | RoyalRoadL

Generic OP protagonist but done in a way that makes it readable. It's been on the weekly top list since it was first published and has maintained that position. So that might speak for itself but you can read it. It uses a xianxia type system in a gamer analogue.

So, those are the recs from me. Enjoy.

It's only an inkling of an idea right now. I need to build up the plot now.

Any suggestions?
when he summons the familairs, is he creating a brand new soul, bringing it in from somewhere, or are they just soulless automatons?
and what happens if they are dispelled?
i'm picturing the first one, where either they can't be dispelled, or when they are, they are sent into his head (soul) and he can hear them all the time...

Because I am a sadistic bastard that love batshit characters

I always imagined a altered version of 'Mind' more like Fate's Eternal Arms Mastership

The idea is that there's no mental protection/stability. You can use the skills freely as they are practically imbued into the mind as a reflex but emotionally wise? Nope your mind is naked

Would probably be cool with stuff like do you take Berserk? A sin focused skill tree?

I thought that link was a rec. You ruined my expectations.:(

So what stories and/or characters would everyone like to see made into gamer fics?

Hmm, well, just off the top of my head I can think of two possibilities:

Mad Max, not the character however I'm referring to the setting. Granted the Gamer power may not get much use initially if the person wielding it can't read or goes into hysterics upon seeing that first message screen. Though that might make for a good beginning, person X gets this power and promptly freaks at the first message that pops up, local medicine man/doctor tries to help him but is completely at a loss so the village and or gang throws this person out before their insanity can infect anyone else. Though finding any useful skillbooks anyone's willing to part with may be difficult depending upon the area.

Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager (more specifically SF Debris version of Voyager from his reviews) - At first he thought someone had just forgotten to end their program when they left the holodeck and decided to play around with it a bit. Then things got weird when the notification screens kept appearing after he left the holodeck. A checkup with the doctor shows nothing wrong even though no one else can see the notification screens. On the other hand learning and grinding these new skills he's acquiring is a lot more interesting then playing the clarinet or really much else. Although the sight of that large spider on Captain Insaneways Janeways shoulder is more then a little worrying....but it might be worth some XP:evil:

Thanks for quoting me! Though I seem to have said a lot I can't quite recall lol. Seriously though, I'm glad to see some more ideas. I especially like the Mad Max idea. The writer would have to be careful about power ups however. The gamer is easy to become super OP in such a setting. Maybe find ways to level the playing field.

Yeah, the Gamer doesn't fit in low-power settings. Mad Max is Human-scale.

You throw the Gamer at Dragonball, Star Wars and Power Rangers (the movie or some of the higher power seasons like Zeo) because they can handle it.
Otherwise you run out of non-curbstomp conflict

Well that all depends upon who gets the power, and considering the setting and what's happened to civilization, whether or not they can actually read.

But leaving that aside another way to level the playing field could be to force the Player to choose whether to fight X gang or fight the harsh environment* instead of out and out training, especially if the Player is protecting innocent people such as a village or a nomadic convoy.

Although I think The Gamer has the potential to become super OP in any setting they're placed in.

*Considering the slight implication towards the end of Fury Road that either the climate is changing or the ecology is collapsing then finding clean water or edible food could become much harder in the future.

Questions to whoever reads this.

How OP can a random person with the Gamer power can get in a setting like Assassin's Creed with the skill Observe at Max Level?

Or has all skills that you can learn in Harry Potter with loot that comes with the setting in the Dungeons and Dragons universe?
