The Dream that is Dying (Exalted)

I...Hrrm.
Sooo saying 'may my family be safe and happy' I think should be a Telluric and probably cover what Farah wants.
By the sounds of it, revenge we can get by following these two and kicking the butt of those cultists that tried to have us all killed off. Unless I'm mistaken?

Mmm, no, not quite. The big issue here is that our family is not some random backwater peasants but the ruling class of a prominent country, which means that everything they do affects everyone else in Taira, requiring adjusting their destinies as well.

I mean, ensuring the safety of our family in the current political vacuum with various parties trying to gain control over the leaderless empire would likely be Sidereal Projection and maybe more than one.

Focusing on Sabah's well-being and perhaps eventual ascent as a ruler would be more doable, or we can generally encourage the odds of our family surviving and prospering without guaranteeing it. Either would likely fall into Supernal Projection territory.

Oh, and we can remove Sabah's I've-Seen-Some-Shit-based intimacy with Supernal Projection of Ambition 1.

It has occurred to me that a write-in only vote here might have been a poor decision on my part, especially so early in the quest. Hmm.

Would folks prefer if I added a set of pre-written options?

Given how Farah themselves have little stake in anything save what they are living behind right now, there seem to be essentially two options plausible to their character:
1) Bless Sabah, their adorable and defenseless little sister, with good fortune and safety.
2) Bless their surviving family in general with safety from those who would tear them apart.

We're pretty lucky because this could very easily have been pointless; Fate is generally a very powerful instrument in Creation, but demons are specifically one of the things that fuck with it, and no amount of fated help for our family would help them against a Yozi Cult with sufficient demonic backup. It couldn't prevent the coup that just occurred. Luckily, most of the cult has been destroyed by the Sidereals and their own attack, so we should be relatively safe from them... And it also means we don't have to bother with going the spiteful route of cursing them to misery or whatever.

I'm kind of struggling to find more options than the two I outlined above; they conveniently take care of our most immediate priority so we can go to Heaven with a sad, but relieved mind.

Of course it means we can't have a totally sweet Lone Wolf and Cub dynamic where we are this crazy Chosen of Mars who goes everywhere with their adorable and confused little sister killing bad guys and fixing destinies but, sadly, that was probably never on the table.

(I wish it were tho)

Alright then I have added a trio of general pre-written options to the vote and also removed the moratorium, since it was almost up anyway. Write-ins are still an option, as are sub-votes for specific details you wish to add to your initial request.

On a more general note, astrological projections can accomplish a staggeringly wide range of things. Imagine just about any curse, malediction or prophecy from a work of fiction or mythology and there is a good chance you can represent it through this system. You can even do conditional effects - Iron Siaka blessed her home village to protect it against plague and famine, and as a side effect of that (due to limited finesse) she found her blessing can be forfeit if someone in the village turns against their neighbor.

Similarly, projections like this are pretty damn durable. They can be undone by other projections and inherently have a completion clause in them somewhere, but otherwise will cheerfully persist for as long as required to see your aims fulfilled.

[X] A Blessing of Personal Safety: You would have the fate of your surviving family members emphasize their continued survival - they will be healthy and whole, and that is what matters.

Taira is gonna go to shiiit and let's not have them in the firing lines

kingship is overrated

[X] A Blessing of Love: They have already lost one family - you would help them find another. Weave fate so as to guide the members towards people they can love and who would love them in return.

Now, a blessing of safety is probably what I should vote for, but as a rabid shipper I feel obligated to make this write-in. Feel free to improve the wording so as to avoid fate kicking us in the personal bits.

@Maugan Ra kenpachi can have a tiny shoulder girl, give us a tiny shoulder girl or we riot :mad:

Yeah, probably the best out of standard ones. I had vague ideas about a blessing of anti-PTSD for Sabah, but dealing with trauma is good for the narrative, so.

@Maugan Ra kenpachi can have a tiny shoulder girl, give us a tiny shoulder girl or we riot :mad:

I would like her to be our Acquaintance. We can drop by every now and then and have conversations that keep us connected to our humanity as we become a mover and shaker of destinies.

I suppose that when she talks about us to other people, they would see us as her imaginary friend, a savior figure she's made up after witnessing murder of her family, assuming they remember her descriptions of us at all.

You people are all incredibly, shamefully generic in your astrological blessings. Put some pride in it. Think like a warrior from a horse-riding culture.

[X] A Blessing of Equine Fortune: People who give aid to members of your family find their horses are healthy and well-behaved. People who mistreat your family find their horses are sickly and ill-tempered. Carries down generationally for your family.

Don't just be all "we want nice things", give some cause and effect. Start a lineage fairy tale here.

I see the tendency of going with safe options is going strong.

[X] (Supernal, Ambition 2): Bless your family down to the third generation, such that they inspire kindness and goodwill in all who meet them, so long as they remain true to their family legacy and work to reclaim the throne. You wish for your family to not simply survive, but to thrive, even if it means getting indebted to a more powerful peer you haven't met yet. Your family will not be condemned to live as exiles, but shall return to claim their ancient birthright.

Basically its the Bless with Success option, but I want to make it clear what scale I'm aiming for. This is the scale for a whole tribe, and the level below it is enough to make a single person rapidly gain political power. I wish for our family to survive, gain allies, and return in triumph.

So, we have Shepard of the North Star.

Gathering a small band of charismatic misfits on his ship, so that they can save the universe, presumably by traveling around a lot and engaging in three-man-squad infantry battles.

Farah should try to secure the badass-from-a-warrior-culture slot. The token Krogan is always the best squadmember. You don't want to get stuck as the Jacob or Kaiden slot and left back on the ship all the time.

Well, Farah has red eyes, so he'll provide the Renegade companion.

It seems like if we declined to connect with Farah's distant family because we feared they might have been in on the plot, it would follow that we should tailor the blessing to not include those family members, that way he's not blessing the people that potentially murdered his immediate family

In which case, we could presumably ask for a more potent blessing solely for Sabah, or for Sabah and her descendants etc.

Further, there's some benefit for asking for a more significant blessing too. If you owe the bank $100 that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem. Asking for something that requires Farah to become in debt to a significant Sidereal is a good way to get into that Sid's network, make them his patron, and derive all the benefits from that. Yes Farah will owe them one, and have reduced control over his future, but that would've happened anyway realistically. It'll give that Sid a vested interest in insuring he doesn't die and that he develops into the kind of ally they can further use.

I mean I can always work on outright developing a cataphract-friendly martial art style for Farah to learn (or that they can actually develop) in that case. It's relatively easy to do for a quest format like this because we don't need to worry about fiddly essence costs and such. So if you have ideas for possible charms and abilities such a style should include I'd be interested in hearing them, for future reference if nothing else.
Charm ideas... You know what? I'll do you one better. Watch this space.
HEY MAUGAN GUESS WHAT
STORM HERALD STYLE
Since time immemorial have cavalry been the lords of the battlefield, noble sons and daughters garbed in the finest panoply falling upon their foes like clear-sky lightning. Storm Herald style harkens to this, emphasizing the momentum and power of a charging rider, and the terror evoked in those who witness such a thing bearing down upon them. Students strive to become a terrible thunderbolt able to shatter any obstacle, and decide an entire battle in a single sublime charge.

The origins of this style are lost to history; half a hundred traditions across the North claim to have birthed it or a variant, and there are at least a dozen claimants elsewhere in the world – it may even be a hybrid style constructed by the meeting or two or more fighting arts, but either way, its true author (or authors) is unrecorded.

Panoply of the Storm Herald: Storm Herald style uses spears of all lengths (and longfangs), lances (and dire lances) and poleaxes. It cannot be used unarmed, but is compatible with all armour – indeed, it is traditionally practiced in heavy plate-and-chain.

Complementary Abilities: Understandably enough, a Storm Herald is usually a great Rider, as the style is focused upon mounted combat. Many are also wealthy enough, or skilled enough Survivalists, to acquire an exceptional mount of some kind.

CRASHING LIGHTNING CHARGE
Cost: 5m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 1; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Uniform
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
Fully committing to the charge, the herald transforms the speed and weight of a galloping mount into a lightning bolt of destructive power concentrated in the tip of their spear.
Invoking this charm adds the speed bonus of the martial artist's mount to the raw damage of an Impale attack (see Exalted p.203) and a successful attack knocks the victim prone. Additionally, use of this charm allows Impale attacks with any Storm Herald style weapon.

ROILING ASPECT ADVANCE
Cost: 6m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 1; Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
A Herald at a canter is a storm in motion; the clatter of armour as hailstones, the neighing of horses as the howling wind and rain, the booming of thunderclaps in the rumble of hoofbeats, until the enemy is routed before a blow is struck.
This Charm may be used upon moving closer to an opponent to make a special, reflexive Threaten action, to which the total mobility penalty of the armour of the Herald and her mount is added as an equipment bonus (that is, a Herald in heavy armour riding a mount in heavy barding adds +4 to her Threaten pool). Success forces a character to attempt to Disengage on their next action, while a battle group must immediately take a rout check.

HOOVES LIKE HAILSTONES
Cost: 4m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 1; Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: One Turn
Prerequisite Charms: None
Under the Herald's guidance, her mount is a whirlwind of trampling hooves that churn the earth to arrange a mandala of crushed and broken foes.
While using this Charm, the martial artist's mount may reflexively make a single attack against any prone enemies within Close range.

STORM HERALD FORM
Cost: 6m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 1; Type: Simple
Keywords: Form,
Duration: One Scene
Prerequisite Charms: Crashing Lightning Charge, Roiling Aspect Advance, Hooves Like Hailstones
The Herald rears her steed up in a churning display of wrath, before crashing down with terrible focus, rider and mount perfectly united in the promise of a tempest that cares nothing for crowds and legions.
While using this Charm, commanding her mount to attack or use a technique as part of the Herald's turn is a reflexive action which no longer consumes her combat action. Additionally, she may mount her steed as a reflexive action, and increases the difficulty of any attempt to unhorse her by 2.

Special Activation Rules: If the Herald's first action in a combat is to Rush or Threaten an opponent or battlegroup, she may reflexively activate Storm Herald Form.

JAGGED LIGHTNING EVASION
Cost: 3m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2; Type: Supplementary
Keywords: None
Duration: One Turn
Prerequisite Charms: Storm Herald Form
From earth to sky, lightning sketches a crooked path, and so the rider is never quite where she should be.
Add +2 to the Herald and her mount's Defence ratings during either a Rush or Disengage action.

DANCING THUNDERCLOUD ATTITUDE
Cost: 2m, 1wp; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2; Type: Simple
Keywords: Mastery
Duration: One Scene
Prerequisite Charms: Jagged Lightning Evasion
To attack the Herald is as futile as trying to strike a storm, while her own blows fall like thunderbolts from on high.
While using this Charm, the Herald treats her mount as one of enormous size for the purposes of defence, forcing enemies using short-range, non-Reaching attacks to take a (Dexterity + Athletics) action at difficulty 3 to climb aboard before they can attack her. The Herald in turn requires Reaching or ranged attacks of her own to attack most enemies.

Mastery: The Herald may treat this as a Supplementary Charm if invoked as part of a Rush action, or alongside Crashing Lightning Charge.

RIDE LIKE THE WIND
Cost: 2m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2; Type: Reflexive
Keywords: None
Duration: One Turn
Prerequisite Charms: Storm Herald Form
What a gale cannot flow around, it uproots and hurls before it; either way, the storm does not slow.
While using this Charm, the Herald suffers no mobility penalties from equipment or the environment (though she may still count the full armour mobility penalty when invoking Roiling Aspect Advance), and may convert their mount's speed bonus to automatic successes for an additional 2m per die.

GALE-AND-STORMCLOUD UNITY
Cost: 2m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2; Type: Simple
Keywords: None
Duration: One Scene
Prerequisite Charms: Storm Herald Form
Where does the Herald end and the horse begin? A foolish question. They are as the howling rain and the thundercloud; one and the same.
While using this Charm, the Herald may invoke other Charms on behalf of her mount, as if the mount knew those Charms itself.

BRIDLE THE STORM
Cost: 8m 1wp; Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 3; Type: Simple
Keywords: Mastery
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisite Charms: Dancing Thundercloud Attitude, Ride Like The Wind, Gale-and-Stormcloud Unity
Raising her lance in salute to the boiling sky, the Herald roars her intent to ride the storm in truth as well as spirit. Lightning crashes down upon the tip of her weapon, searing and coursing through her until, with a mighty shout and a convulsive heave, she casts the energy through her, infusing her mount with a sublime and terrible power.
The Herald's mount is surrounded in buffeting winds, smashing hailstones and arcs of lightning that form an environmental hazard encompassing everything within short range of the rider, with a damage of 4L each round, at difficulty 4.

Mastery: Instead of infusing her mount with tempestuous power, the Herald may instead cast the energy before her to birth a new mount composed of the storm itself. This storm-steed uses the profile of a claw-strider, great cat, hellboar, horse, or similarly-sized creature, but is immune to decisive attacks save those which might reasonably be expected to suppress it as a hazard; torrential wind and rain has very little to fear from a sword stroke, but a catapult stone large enough to smother it might do the trick.

By default, the storm steed dissipates shortly after the rider dismounts unless she remains in physical contact with it, but at Essence 4+ it may exist independently of her. Tales exist of famed Heralds who maintained such mounts for so long that they eventually awoke as minor air elementals loyal to their rider-parents.
Now then...

[X] A Blessing of Glory: Yours is an ancient line, and it has held the throne by accomplishment and valour - were you not champion of the kingdom's finest warriors, an honour you earned in blood and victory? But now you are gone, sailing away to Heaven. It is only meet, then, that you see your family's passions kindled in your wake, the blaze of your Second Breath inspiring their own achievements in your absence, that they might remind the wolves at the gates exactly who they are fucking with.

Like Yonatan, my write-in is basically the Invocation of Success, but I'm taking it in entirely the other direction. If the best defence be a good offence, then let it be so - Rouse yourselves, kin of Amestris! Gird your loins! Fly the banners! Seize destiny by the throat, and make these traitors rue the day they dared such schemes!

With the royal family decapitated, the realm will be thrown into chaos. We can't assure our family will be safe. At best we can weight the odds a little, and safety is going to be very hard to come by. The better route, I think, will be to put steel in their hearts and fire in their bellies, so that when chaos comes they have the heroic vigour to master its challenges.

More cynically, narratively speaking if we raise the chances of our family churning out heroic figures, that makes it a lot more likely that those heroes will be significant actors should we return home in the future, as opposed to our family receding into a comfortable but irrelevant obscurity.

(Also like... We're playing a hot-headed warrior. Let's own that. Somebody's just come for our family's blood, we're not going to sail gently into the night - we're gonna flip them the bird as hard as we can from the horizon's edge!)
