"Ming hates it when he's stuck in the city by himself. It makes him feel good to give him a chance to serve. Peasants, you know?" Po Shuo had a small smile on his face as he shrugged, but there was not a hint of malice or opprobrium in his look. He meant what he said, and he said it good naturedly.

Throwback to the last update, but this is more of a servants thing. People take pride in their work, and doing it well. If it ever came up again it'd be worth talking about, but it was a one off comment.

Don't know how sub votes will effect the vote count, but I'm currently running with the assumption that the main vote is counted and then the sub vote is looked at to see if enough people support it as well rather than splitting because of the subvote.

I find that splitting votes leads to too much voting politics

Ok so, here's the thing. The Bei are not waiting to try and pick us up after the party. They are marching inside either to threaten, or bargain. If they threaten, they are basically flexing on the sect as a whole that they can do this without reprisal. That... really cannot be allowed to stand. If they bargain then the twins either say no and have to follow up on their promise, or they alienate a large portion of the first years who see them selling out the people they are supposed to protect and basically cause any faction they are a part of to be suspect.

This is a ferociously bad play by the Beis, as they not only risk annoying us, but the entire first year class on top of possibly getting the sect proper involved. it reeks of Young Master style arrogance that I'd see Mo Xiang pull over a criminal syndicate.

[X] "We should go let our hosts know some ruffians are going to try to pick a fight at their party."

This is the proper play, we're not going to win this fight and if we start it the Twins do not have to respond, after all we're making the ruckus. If we run we're liable to run into a trap or just postpone this while losing face. Conversely if we warn the twins they are now the ones who have to deal with this or lose massive amounts of face and annoy not only Mo but whoever Mo was waiting for, in addition to shattering first year cohesion.

Edit: Frankly I think this is a scenario where Gao Jin's thuggish thinking is set to backfire. They want us to flee or fight, then we're in the wrong. They look at our backgrounds because I can safely assume they paid some other firsty a lot of money to give them an overview of us, and presume that Gao jin is the leader, which to be fair when it comes time to knock heads, he kinda is. They don't expect us to be able to navigate noble etiquette or to be so panicked and drunk we fail. At least that's assuming what they are thinking if they competent and Young Master style arrogant to the point their noses have become singularities from being so pointy.

I don't know what the young master from the Bei is thinking, trying to pick a fight with a bunch of drunk teenagers with superpowers. That's just asking for trouble.

Our primary concern should be to protect the Twin's 'face'. This is their party. We cannot initiate a fight. Even offering to assist with security is a suggestion that they cannot handle this themselves.
And even if a fight does happen, that isn't great as we'll be seen to be carrying weapons. Other people at the party may also be forced to reveal that they brought weapons with them.

It is possible that these thugs are not actually here to get us. We gave the Bei's plausible deniability to say that they did not know who stole the goods, because the situation is embarrassing for them.
Although if they are turning up to the first year's party over this, then they are still admitting that a bunch of kids stole their goods. Get the burn cream...
Then again, maybe someone else at the party is the target.

@warumono There was something in the last letter I wrote that felt unpleasant to me, and I finally worked out what it was: poor Mom Hua was gonna get an ulcer from worry after reading it, so I decided to write a follow up that finished in a note a bit more positive, without completely backpedaling.

Of course, then you went and threw alcohol, cigarettes and a bar brawl with gangsters into the bowl, which kinda defeats the purpose to reassure the poor woman, so even if the letter is meant for next week I thought better not to mention those unimportant details.:lol::lol:

By the way, if you gave me a bonus success for the letters to Song and Ling, it hasn't been added to the character sheet bank.

Three bonuses added. Awesome addition!

@warumono Does it work like this? I've been wondering as well.

Yes.

Yes, voting. Something that I certainly do not forget to do at times...

Do we have any evidence that this is the case? As you said that would be spectacularly unforced error unless they have some weird agreement with people in the sect that lets them do this sort of thing, and I think it's a bad habit to make plans your opponent will make one of the worst possible moves unless you've gotten a lot of evidence for it. Nothing in the post hints at any of them moving towards the entrance, just gathering on the streets while glaring at the building, which is pretty consistent with just waiting to try and pick up after the party.

And there were more coming from down the street. This group was led by a young man in silk robes wearing a scholar's hat. He had a pinched, tight face, and the sour expression made it all even more unattractive.
I'm pretty sure the mortal in the scholars hat leading the dao-users is the young master of the Bei family, who we stole from. The mooks milling around aren't doing anything at the moment because they're waiting for their boss to arrive. When he does get here (in about a minute or so), that'll be when they try something.

Gathering in force to attack partygoers as they're leaving is only a bit less insulting than directly crashing the party.

Everyone at this party is in town expressedly for the party, unarmed(at least, nominally so) due to the host's assurances that the security is taken care of, and drunk by general encouragement.

As a result, harm coming to party goers except by expresss provocation is the responsibility of the host.

Also, is anyone with omake points willing to put them into Wooden Hand to get it to level 2? Warumono said it's allowed, and it's the biggest powerboost we can get atm since we don't have Jianshu with us.

It would be +2 damage, +5 block, and +1 dodge. So it would be a big boost. Especially if we end up having to fight the spirit realm cultivator.

This was the previous cultivator we fought, who was probably a low/mid initiate I would guess.

Cultivator 2 dodge: INT (??) + AGL (??) = 9
Cultivator 2 attack: AGL (??) + Edged (??) + Soldier's Cant 2 (??) = 12
Cultivator base damage: 8 (3 Stun + 5 Phys) + Soldier's Cant 2 (??) = 12 (5 Stun + 7 Phys)
Armor: 3 (Soldier's Cant 2)

So the spirit realm fighter probably has Soldiers Cant 3, 3 or so more Agi, and maybe another weapon skill level. For something like

Dodge 13
Attack 15-17
Damage 16

[X] "We're fighting. We can't run with this many eyes on us. Brother Fan Lee, will you stand with us? I will owe you for this. Liang Hei Ma, go to Brother Fong Zhou and request his aid. Quickly inform him of the situation and tell him I will owe him if he can lend aid."

Yeah no way am I trusting Hua yin's bully's faction to help him out

Hua Yin smokes so much.
