@warumono What do you think about hitting twice the target amount of successes being a Critical Success? It might interact weirdly with Critical Glitches, but it could also be fun.

What do people thing about focusing on Wooden Hand in class for a week? We were usually getting +3 successes to it in class. So one week would probably get it to level two and would give us a solid alternative if we have to fight heavy armor wearing opponents.

@warumono, would that be allowed? Something like:

[ ] Attend Core Disciple Chu Quiang's martial arts class.
-[ ] Focus on Wooden Hand this week

In the very, very short term it may be useful, but in the long term its better to just focus on making our build as strong as possible and that means that we will need to focus on leveling numberless stars so that we can offset its malus. that is far better than getting another level in a tech that we fully intend to drop. After all armor is only good for mortals, we are better served by just trying to become strong enough that mortals can't compare to us.

heck if its allowed, it would be quite useful if we could train levin step at martial class.

[X] Plan: Sprinting to Spirit

It'll hurt that we are skipping the Archives again, but in a cultivation sect, breaking through will lead to a lot being forgiven I assume. We just need to get back to it later, so we look diligent for the higher end offers later. Like that Elder who we met, and implied we'd get an offer there.

Wooden hand is a starter martial art, when we are ready to focus on something besides the blade, we may want to check the archives, and find something with a better elemental and style match.

That didn't work out the way we hoped. No free techs for the workers so far.
Yeah, we'll probably have to advance far enough to be one of those disciples that are in charge of the technique repository and now we got enough points that it shouldn't be an issue anyway. I guess we'll just stay until we get promoted so we'd probably miss out on any advanced archive benefit anyway since we're likely joining the Seekers or Spiritualist Hall in the end.

Can we try to use the Clear Eyed Glass as we cultivate? We may be able to see some of our cultivation technique in action and better refine it. Given the distraction involved, we should wait till after our current push to break through, but afterwords is a good time for refinement.

We may also be able to use it to help out friends too.

But no matter what argument Hua Yin tried, Ling Daiyu would not budge. The challenge would resolve with three services owed.

+1 Success to Persuade Progression.
Considering we managed to settle on a compromise for item usage in the duel (Profound realm or below instead of Initiate or below or no restrictions), I don't suppose the same was possible here, with settling on two favours instead of three or one?

@warumono upgrade the... cultivation stat with my bonus point

(Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I think there's a knowledge cultivation stat and a cultivation stat and some third thing that might also be called cultivation. )

We have Knowledge Cultivation (the skill) which we use to study the Writ and helps us learn higher level techniques; Cultivation (the skill) which we use to actually cultivate; and our base Cultivation stat, which is how advanced we are (we're currently most of the way through Pinnacle Initiate, soon to reach the point where we can attempt a breakthrough to the Spirit Realm).

[X] Plan: Do Our Job

Gotta keep in contact, and demonstrate at least some effort before we shift course.
Even if we don't really need the points badly, its still good form to show up.

Yep. Here are the differences:

This one is our actual level. How high up we are on the immortality ladder.
Cultivation Level: 3 (Pinnacle Initiate) (Progress to next level 48/60)

This one is academic knowledge of cultivation theory.
+3 Knowledge: Cultivation (Progress to next level: 17/40)

This one is the skill for the act of cultivating. How effectively we can draw Qi from fonts.
+1 Cultivation (Progress to next level: 13/16)

@warumono are there dice for the class that we are just rolling low or is it a set amount?

It's a set amount.

Also sect points and upkeep aren't updated.

Fixed.

@warumono What do you think about hitting twice the target amount of successes being a Critical Success? It might interact weirdly with Critical Glitches, but it could also be fun.

Let me think about that. It might get OP, especially against low dice mobs, but that might not be a bad thing. I'll think about it.

@warumono, would that be allowed? Something like:

No, that would just switch the style gain from Numberless Stars to Wooden Hand.

There's some hidden calculations and background story developments that are affected by attendance.

[X] Plan: Do Our Job

@warumono the last time we actually cultivated in cultivation class was week 14; has the frequency been reduced since we reached the advanced class?

Reduced. Next one will be in a week or two depending on what next bit of lore I want to release.

@warumono upgrade the... cultivation stat with my bonus point

(Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I think there's a knowledge cultivation stat and a cultivation stat and some third thing that might also be called cultivation. )

Got it.

I can understand the logic on not wanting to skip work but I think that being the second to reach the Spirit realm would probably be more impressive to the Sect.

[X] Plan: Sprinting to Spirit

We've gotten this far, let's go for the breakthrough. I don't like skipping Archives again but it makes no sense breaking through after the spectacle. Let's be part of it instead. Impress our classmates.

We'll owe the other archivists plenty of apologies next week. It may not be much, but we should show we're not skipping to nap or similar. We have to add details to the action:

-[] Attend duties in the Archives.
--[] Apologize to our fellow archivists. We have been swamped with more duties than we can manage, and our close breakthrough made it worse.

I loved this update. One of the things I like about Hua Yin is how, despite his obvious power and rapid progress, he doesn't feel overpowered. This update contributed greatly to that by showing Hua Yin's insecure side and a couple of minor failures. He feels more human and relatable than most fanfiction, webnovel, and manga MCs that I've read lately. And that's awesome.

Hua Yin looked and thankfully he saw the bag. When he went over to it, he saw that it had been filled with shining berries. He looked back to the bushes and saw that there were no more berries to be harvested, what remained being too young to take.

On his way back, Hua Yin noticed that the silver he had brought along with him for incidentals was missing.

On one side, I'm annoyed that we got robbed. On the other, we got the berries, I liked Bu Mi, and a single silver, while important, isn't critical. We just have to be frugal for the next month or so, while our allowance refills our savings.

Plus, it could have been much, much worse. Can you imagine if he had kidnapped us or stolen Jianshu? I shudder to think about it. So I'm more inclined to let it go.

In the end, the story we told was the most appropiate. How ridicuolus would have been to tell about the wine or the rats, painting Hua Yin as a bit of a badass, right while he was getting played by a bum?

And it was. Oh. So. Dramatic. I loved how it was written.

+2 Successes to Earth-Defying Path Progression.
+1 Success to Survival (Don't eat random berries).

@warumono Nothing to Numberless Stars? Okay, they were rabbits, but they had Hua Yin surrounded. I can see it if you say that they weren't enough to push Levin Step forward as it's already a higher level, but Numberless Stars isn't even to first stage.

Fong Zhou had broken through. A number of mortals also broke through this week. That makes it about 1/3 of the class having broken through at least once. It was rumoured that this year's class of first-years was full of monsters.

No Li Gai yet? Shit, he's gonna need moral support too. We don't have enough actions!

But no matter what argument Hua Yin tried, Ling Daiyu would not budge. The challenge would resolve with three services owed.

Damn it! I feel we failed one of the most important checks so far. Worse is the feeling of wasting an action. I mean, I feel we did the right thing, but I also feel it cost us for nothing.

I don't know if Daiyu is innocent in this mess or not, but I hope Chyou wins, because I suspect Daiyu is gonna be a crueler winner.

Why did we pick the Archives over the Medicine Hall? Hua Yin has 2 levels in Medicine and annotated medical textbook, He would have excelled in the Medicine Hall.

You aren't wrong, but with all that we have on our plate, I'm relieved not being in the same branch as Zhe Chao and having to deal with their bullshit on top of everything else.

Hell, I'm glad they're making other enemies. I hope they'll be too distracted with them and not bother us. I won't shed any tears if Zhe Chao gets into trouble.

For all that they accused Hua Yin of being a stereotypical, scheming bureaucrat, they're surely playing the part of the underhanded, despotic, greedy vizier.

Not sure if the whole trip was worth the glass thingy we bought, has it even been used yet?

The glass indeed needs to be used a lot to justify the high cost. We have to use it everywhere, put it in every action we can imagine:

-When we cultivate, for insight into cultivation.
-In the tournament, to see what can we glean of the fighters and Daiyu's talismans
-When we explore, in case it helps finding sites and loot.
-When we train, in case it helps better understand the technique.
-In the Archives, to look for that mysterious source of qi that was mentioned.
-With Jianshu, for insight into Spirit Weapons (later, after finding more info about them)

What do people thing about focusing on Wooden Hand in class for a week? We were usually getting +3 successes to it in class. So one week would probably get it to level two and would give us a solid alternative if we have to fight heavy armor wearing opponents.

We have to make questions about the tournament first. It's an extremely important milestone.
-[] Attend Core Disciple Chu Quiang's martial arts class.
--[] Ask Chu Quiang about the rules of the first year tournament. What's allowed and what isn't? Are weapons allowed? What about spirit weapons like Jianshu? Talismans? Armor? Other aides?

If weapons are allowed, whether we can use Jianshu or not, we'd be better served by putting all training into weapons rather than splitting our focus between weapons and unarmed. We'll be facing people like Yang Genji, Mo Xiang, Bao Lam and Ming Xue in there. Even our friends Gao Jin and Guan Zhi. We'll need a lot if we want to place high.

We can't do everything. Being surprised without a weapon is possible, but we'll have to rely on qi techniques and high cultivation if it happens.

[X] Plan: Do Our Job

We can't skip out on our job too often. There are always going to be other things we can do, but if we're going to advance our position in the Archives we need to actually go there and work.

@warumono Can I add a little note in my plan that says to use the Glass during the duel so we're not surprised by anything?

Edit: Not sure if I'll be awake by the time the vote ends. If it is okay, can you pretend I edited it in there?

Good idea. Adding that to my plan too.
