The College of Jewels (Magical Academy Quest)

[X] Carry on to the college through the square. There's no reason for the lawkeepers to stop you and whatever is going on has nothing to do with you.

Nah, don't worry, Sammy wasn't one of the ones trapped by the Pact. A fight between Sammy (were she still alive and capable of fighting) and The World Anew would also be super serious business. I mean, The World Anew would almost certainly win assuming a white room, but the whole city would feel it.
So how hard is it to bring someone back to life?

Who knows? Such a thing is the stuff of myth and legends. Perhaps the gods could do it, but what reason would they have when the soul is their concern?

(I.E. I'm not saying 'no' but I am saying that bringing someone back to life isn't something even the Chairman or The World Anew could do casually.)

Also, finishing Shadowrun: Hong Kong seems to have devoured my free time today, so alas, the update will be delayed until tomorrow.

Revolutionary
[X] Carry on to the college through the square. There's no reason for the lawkeepers to stop you and whatever is going on has nothing to do with you.

...Yeah. You're just being paranoid. With a slight shake of your head you continue walking out across the square, mind already beginning to buzz once more with ideas. You get a glance or two as you approach, but none of the lawkeepers seem particularly concerned by your presence. As you pass by though, you overhear some of whatever briefing they're being given, the captain's voice carrying easily in the somewhat cool morning air.

"-should also expect increased activity in the lower districts, and possible attacks from groups on the watchlist anywhere in the city. Otherwise-"

Huh. You wonder if something happened, or if this is just the kind of thing lawkeepers usually deal with. Well, you'll be up in the college, so you guess whatever is happening in the rest of the city isn't really going to have any effect on you.

You think that thought when you're almost to the far end of the square and, as if summoned by your optimism, a sound like a swarm of insects comes into being behind you. As you turn around to see what it is, it is swiftly replaced by gurgling and screams as what must be hundreds of blades fall from the sky and bury themselves in the throats of the assembled lawkeepers. A bare handful seem to have survived, among them the captain, who looks more irritated than anything else as she flourishes a sword to slap the daggers racing towards her out of the sky. Across from her, a figure lands on a rooftop three stories up. A man's voice floats down, shouting.

"The revolution has begun!"

An instant later he's gone. As you turn to look around, you see him again far more closely, covered in a loose and overlarge brown cloak and holding a dagger in each hand, both racing towards the captain's neck from behind. Before you can react at all, the captain's blade has once more interposed itself, before lashing out in a lightning fast thrust dodged by the narrowest of margins as the cloaked man moves very slightly out of it's way.

Blow and counter blow are exchanged what must be a hundred times in seconds and you're left stunned by the sheer speed and ferocity of the battle. The captain's face has gone from irritated to a mask of grim determination as she is pushed back across the square step by step.

She opens her mouth to speak, getting out half a word "Cap-" before the revolutionary digs a hand into some hidden pouch and flings a spray of some dust at her, making her quickly close her mouth and spring backwards.

Before she can do anything else, he's on her once more.

Around the square, the few lawkeepers who survived the initial attack are finally getting their bearings. One of them lifts a hand to their ear and begins speaking, before a dagger appears in his throat as well. Across the square, the revolutionary has finally been pushed back a step and his distraction seems to have proven dangerous as the side of his cloak is now badly ripped, revealing many pouches and daggers strapped tightly across his chest.

Update posted from my phone and I can't figure out how to do my normal line thing, so these underscores will have to do. Also, pertinent information: You might be thinking that it's weird that a revolutionary movement gets into gear mere hours after the Pact is banished. This is because a certain someone's attack was, unknown to her, very well timed to happen before a regular meeting that normally goes nowhere. With the Pact dead, it finally went somewhere. That kind of happy not at all a coincidence tends to follow in the wake of all of her actions.

As another thing, I will say that if you do intervene, Saphira won't drop dead with a knife in her throat before she can even cast a spell. Not only is her magic not super flashy in terms of what happens before the spell has been cast, but the revolutionary is currently much more focused on the surviving law keepers and doesn't want to take too much of his attention off of the captain.

Eh, why not.

We don't even know which side we would want to be on - why get the other side mad at us for no real benefit?

QM: ... are you sure?
Very.

[X] Get the fuck out of there.

I mean, the lawkeepers are nice since in theory they are responsible for our safety, but they aren't so nice as to stick our neck out for them and their masters. This whole revolution business has nothing to do with us, we don't even know what it is about. Now, if the same thing happened at the College... but I highly doubt it would, not on the Archmage's watch.

QM: Do you want to interact with this neat event I've cooked up for you? It's a plot hook and everything!
Players: Nope!
QM: ... are you sure?
Meh, I'm not too bothered either way. The way my planning works is that I've got a list of 'things that happen if the players don't vote to interfere' and a lot of sketched out 'this is the general shape of the plot if they choose to interfere in this particular way.' You can ignore a lot of things in relative safety- you'll just tend to miss out on the reward for interfering while also avoiding the risk for doing so. When things really kick into high gear, the plot will be unavoidable. :p

Now, if the same thing happened at the College... but I highly doubt it would, not on the Archmage's watch.
....Wow that's the first time I think any of us were actually grateful for the presence of the arch-mage.
Yeah... A lot of the revolutionaries are pretty serious business people but the Archmage is, in a lot of ways, in a class of his own. And he doesn't like anybody messing with his college.

Hmm...I want to intervene out of principle and because good relations with the lawkeepers (probably) can't hurt, but I don't want us to become a target for revolutionaries.

Okay, I'm going to take a different tack, and here's why:

Saphira has no real love for Diadem's higher-ups; that said, her family's heavily invested in the system. I'd imagine hitting the library at some point would be a great way to hurt the mages, for instance. Scribes are useful. So as much as she dislikes many parts of Diadem, I also don't think she'd really like revolutionaries that much either.

That said, she also values her own skin highly and thus should be subtle about any approach she takes.

[X] Try to intervene somehow.
-[X] The two fighters appear to be closely matched. The Captain probably only needs a moment to win, so you'll give it to her.
-[X] Open a portal above the revolutionary's head, and dump water and ash over his face. Try to be subtle. You don't want to be noticed.
-[X] Immediately leave, whatever the result is.

[X] Try to intervene somehow.
-[x]open a water Protal above both of them to cool them both down.
-[x]run on to school without checking to see how it works.
