The College of Jewels (Magical Academy Quest)

Questions...

[X] Schedule?
[X] Curfew?
[X] Extracurriculars?
[X] Books?

Some of these could have been covered, but I don't remember if so.

Now, prior talents...

The elemental powers are versatile and useful in lots of ways, though Apprentice keeps us off of shiny portal magic. It would be worth it if we went Apprentice, but just Novice alone can be picked up later.Multicasting will be especially relevant if we have portal magic.

Planar Control doesn't appeal to me. Those three points could be Speed Casting 1, for example, which is pretty much the best 3 points we can spend right now. Size makes Portal useful. Creation is basically Hammerspace even without Control, while also being a useful defense if we can predict the attack 3 seconds in advance.

There are two plans I see as viable. Speed Casting is a must. Planar Portal is a must.

[X] Plan Speed Portal
-[X] Speed Casting 1
-[X] Planar Portal
--[X] Planar Portal Size
--[X] Planar Creation

3, 4, 7, 10.

[] Plan Versatility
-[] Novice Elemental Control
--[] Apprentice Elemental Control
-[] Speed Casting 1
-[] Planar Portal

Very capable, but I don't see a big reason for the DSTA to take a shine to someone who's barely touched portals in comparison to someone who's gone pretty far even before studying seriously.

Ouch. Owned by the Dragon. That's harsh.

Hm. Keeping our head low and getting closer to the dragon protege don't mesh well. But I have to respect her for the sheer stubbornness. So I'd probably try to approach her anyway.

As for the build...

[X] Plan Dodge
-[X] Speed Casting 1
-[X] Planar Portal
--[X] Planar Portal Size
--[X] Planar Control

Edit: nvm, Planar Control is something I want.

It has what we need to be able to vanish from immediate trouble. We just need to team up with someone who can cover for our lack in offensive department. An elementalist student with a penchant for massive collateral damage would be nice.

But a martial artist would do in a pinch as well.

Hey, you know what you can do with a dimension's worth of featureless floors and walls?

A dimension's worth of blades. Because that's really all a thin wall is.

We can add a vacuum to prevent them from dodging.

Heck, even without extra dimensional control, we can still create hilariously dangerous environmental hazards in the form of holes to nowhere that close if you fall in.

Dimensional Science is the best.

[X] Plan Dodge

I really want multicasting, but it's quite expensive. And speed casting strikes me as more useful right now.

[X] Plan Versatility

I much prefer this. It gives us better odds of winning our match in the tournament, and winning, not dodging, is what we should be focused on. Plus, imagine the TA tutting over our choices and swearing to convert us to the path of "Proper" magic!

I think being a one trick pony is liable to end with the one trick being countered. Having a backup option is critical.

It's a very good trick. And completely useless unless we go all the way.

You do, in fact, have questions.

"Okay. First of all then, what's the schedule going to be like for this semester? I know you told us to show up in the auditorium tomorrow morning to sign up for classes, but what's that going to look like?"

The TA's head tilts slightly like she's trying to remember something. "Ah, I don't have my schedule on me... I believe the classes on Dimensional Science I'm teaching will be around noon in the small lecture hall we went through before this one. That will be your main class every day, with larger practical classes once a week after dinner on Thursdays and occasional special classes at mystically significant times. The new moon is coming up next week actually I believe, so we'll have a midnight class then..."

She trails off as if thinking.

"Oh, and other classes I suppose. I believe Finius's class on history is mandatory this semester and that's Tuesdays, so you'll have that day after tomorrow right after your class with me. And I suppose if you really wanted to you could probably fit in another class two or three times a week on one of the other subjects taught by one of their TAs, but that might be a bit too much. There's a lot of practice time required outside of class to do well on these things."

"Okay, that's good to know," you say, then ask "What about a curfew or anything else like that?"

"No curfew per se, but the college gates close at sundown so if you went to leave or come back in after that you'll need a..." She pauses. "Non-official way of doing that. Also, don't be too loud late at night just on general principle. Some of the professors are a bit trigger happy with the noisy students."

"Also very good to know, not that I really expected anything different given how the rest of this day has gone."

The TA just sort of nods sadly in response.

"What about, ah, extracurriculars?"

"Ahah! I knew I forgot to mention something on the tour. Yes yes, this is relevant because of this tournament thing the archmage has come up with. The Burning Earth creates an arena in the central courtyard everyday after dinner once classes have started for students to practice fighting in. I actually have a theory that it derives some kind of power from such conflicts given how out of character such an action would normally be for even an elemental of its level of sophistication-"

She cuts herself off with a cough.

"Anyways. It doesn't normally get many takers, but I imagine that will change this semester. I'm told it often gives very practical advice for the fighters after each match. Of course, it's a bit dangerous, but I imagine the practice will be worthwhile for you at least once in a while."

"Anything else?" you ask.

"Hmmm. Not much you would be interested in I think. Still, first few hours of the semester yet. I'll let you know if anything comes up."

"Okay. One last thing then- what about books? That's where I learned all of what I know so far, and I know you took us through the library, but just about everything was chained to the shelves."

"Yes, we keep a close eye on the College's library. Don't worry, you'll be allowed to take anything a teacher has authorized you to, and if you ever want to do some reading ahead just ask me and I'll see about getting you the books you'll need."

"Okay then. Thank you! I'm honestly glad to just be having a normal conversation at this point without threats of horrible torture and death every other sentence."

"I think everyone at this college has had that feeling at one point or another." The TA shrugs, as if asking 'What are you going to do?' then finishes simply by saying, "You get used to it."

You say good night and turn to leave for your dorm room-

"Oh, and Saphira, please feel free to ask me for extra tutoring if you ever have time in your schedule. I'm eager to help someone of your talents learn."

With an assurance that you will, you finally leave for your room. You honestly don't even take it in. You just fall onto your bed and gratefully sink into sleep.

Okay, now into the meat of the quest. First things first, you need to plan out your first day of classes. Some things will be automatic, but otherwise you'll be picking what to do in each timeslot. Eventually we'll probably have some timeskips, but for at least the first two weeks, each day is going to have at least a short update with some days getting several updates if something particularly important happens. At the end of each day you'll gain points to spend on magic based on your choices. Also, you'll finally be learning some people's names, and thank god for that. I can only write nervous girl so many times without hating myself.

Note: Mandatory Choices count against the total number of choices for a time slot.

Morning (2 Choices)
[X] Picking classes (Mandatory Choice)
-[] Nervous Girl Encounter
-[] Rich boy Encounter
[] Explore the College (Random Encounter)

Afternoon (3 Choices)
[X] Dimensional Science TA's Class (Mandatory Choice)
[] Class on spirits
[] Class on the elements
[] Explore the College (Random Encounter)
[] Tutoring with the TA
[] The Library
[] Practice (May spend accumulated points)

Night (2 Choices)
[] Explore the College (Random Encounter)
[] Tutoring with the TA
[] The Burning Earth's Arena
[] The Library
[] Practice (May spend accumulated points)

More options with what to do with your time will become available as you pick 'Explore the College' options and get to know various characters.

Can you simply remove the mandatory choices from list? It basically doesn't add anything except unneeded complexity to vote. Just say that we did them regardless

This has a lot of explore actions for new people encounters, plus a beginning intro to elemental attacks(we really do need better offense before we go to Arena) and also studying so we can accumulate points to buy Elementalism or more Dimensional Fuckery.

If people have a problem with it I'll change it, but I do want it to be clear what the full schedule for the next day is going to be. For at least this vote I'll keep it as is for a trial run unless everyone dislikes it I think.

Edit: And it does seem to have caused some confusion. The mandatory choices count towards the total number of choices for the time slot. I'll edit that to be clearer at least.

Can an action be chosen twice? Two classes on Elemental magic in a row, or two actions of tutoring/exploration during one timeslot?

No, because then that leads to weird situations where you pick the tutoring with the TA option three times in the afternoon when she has a class to teach. If a choice could reasonably be taken more than once in a day, it will show up in multiple time slots like the Tutoring, Explore the College, and Library options.

[X] Plan Exploration and Studying

Aw man, missed the last vote. Wanted at least some elemental stuff. At least this plan takes the elemental class.

EDIT: Changed vote to [X] Plan 3DS

I prefer to keep exploration to a minimum till we have adequate combat skills and suitably intrigued the archmage so we can't be easily swept under the rug. We're a tempting target just from our dressing, which indicates a lack of / poor backing.
That said, it probably won't be too bad since everyone's equally spooked by the archmage but erring on the side of caution...

As for the plan name... Well, we'll be studying Dimensional Science 3 times, excluding the library sessions :p

Eh, we need to ingratiate ourselves to powerful backers quickly. Explore gives us a head start, plus if we wait too long they will have formed their cliques already.
Also, our build is great for explore because Portals give us a get out of jail free card and are an excellent defense.

They allow us to wink out of existence for a moment, true. The tiny little problem with them being a 'get out of jail free card' is that we have to come back, and to the exact same place we opened the portal from, unless we improve our spells drastically.

So the jail is going to still be waiting for us on the other side.

Yeah, not going to stick our hand in too much until we get good.
Getting wiped early by a more aggressive student would be a bad way to go.
