Sunlit Sands - An Exalted Campaign (Discussion)

"Why, the exquisite prey!" The demon seems surprised that Inks does not know of them. "They were bred from mortal stock originally, after all. Humans and those beasts that mimic the luminata. No?"

I suddenly have flashbacks to a few games where you could manipulate at will the genetic code and have either so few rules or corporations breaking them that everything was possible for life. Sentient or not. There is also a dread reminding of what the solars created with life in the late days of their golden age.

Only Diff 1 for "getting the message out there", but degree of success will inform how much of a response she gets.))
Inks: !ex 6 +2; Inks rolled 7, 4, 8, 9, 9, 10 for a compiled value of 8.
Inks: (Lulz)

The Pen is mightier than the Sword.

"Somewhat. I've no real moral or ethical obligation to sensual service, but I dislike exploitation

I had some difficulties in a few early games for dealing with this kind of situation. The players and Storyteller having difficulty to acknowledge their characters were born where this kind of situation was normal and their own sensibilities. Thanks god for the Red Rule in 3°ed.

"You won't regret it! And you know, most of the big Houses are probably spying on you, so fair's fair, you might as well do the same back."

Oh yeah, you still don't have a dedicated spy network.

ST: And is a good, creative dreamer, which makes her valuable.

You know, creative dreamers and dreamstones imply Lucid Dreaming unless daydreaming can be used to impress a dreamstone… I though only sleep-dreams could do that.

everything a woman and her giant tiger-familiar could want.

Inks: "I want the armour for the tiger White Blaze in the anime Ronin Warriors."

I want to invoke Uvanavu and Venus in terms of 'making best bath ever', the former because God of Health, the latter because Venus...)

Hey, good idea. You won't be able to match her famous baths in Yu-shan, but it will generate good things in heaven. You could even make it an automatic prayer system for Venus.

A pair of dark red tiger ears stood out among the uncontrollable curls, several dozen whiskers fanning out from her cheeks twitched irritably, and she bared two rows of sharp fangs at Inks with a hiss.

Pesala is adorable. Hoping to see her more in the future.

Inks: for future reference, Inks is totally going to learn HAM just to tutor Pelasa

Okay, I fold. I was never one to learn charms or spells by their initials. So, what is HAM?

I totally ship Inks and Sulieman.

After chapter 1, it was a desire to see the trope of the creepster surprise marriage proposal subverted by her accepting (you partially did by him being a mostly decent guy). After chapter 5, I greatly enjoy their chemistry. Not now, not yet, but I envision them meeting again and again over the next few years, getting to know each other further, and one day, making the informed and wholesome decision that yes, they would like to marry.

Hahah! Thanks. Suleiman's an interesting character, and I'm definitely looking forward to how his character develops- note that next up is Session 51, so unless you read ahead in the pastebin logs, you won't know how things progress...

Having said that, Chapters 12, 13 and 14 are now live on Ao3!

ST: Sorry about the short session. How was the resolution of the Sun Market for you?

Frustrating, but you handled it like a pro.

I would have draw steel and then shot myself in the foot with the consequences.

Speed the Wheels. We should probably rewrite it so that it uses the major minor trivial dramatic action speeds. Int+Bur at Diff 1...)

It is those little earlier charms that make or break the solar. Greasing the wheels of any administration… And now that I think about it, Yu-shan doesn't have those specific charms with the gods, only a select few had purviews with those effects… I bet it was celestial design so that the Unconquered Sun, the siderals and the solars retained their dominance over administration.

Inks had to pout- the young man was cute.

I suppose Inks can't but flirt/sexy style with all the good-looking mortals around her… And probably the divine ones too… Tell me, did she try to seduce her teacher?

"We aim to invoke the grace and comfort of Venus, Maiden of Serenity."
A gust of perfumed air swept through the baths, and Inks felt for a moment the warm presence of a feminine body behind her. A silky laugh whispered against her ear, and she felt long, velvet hair brushing across her shoulder. A thrum of pleasure ran through her, so intense as to make her knees weak, and as the sapphire fell she saw reflected in it a face of impossible, inhuman beauty. The eyes were so blue...

Inks exaltation could have easily been a Joybringer… In fact, she might just have been designed honorary courtesan of heaven… If she ever visit Yu-shan, she's going to be very surprised, I think…

He nodded gravely. "Remember. Get me something I can punish."

Well… Inks wanted some actions…

Inks: (So this covers the 'primer on ghostly nature' action. Stunt value?)

Did you use whirlwind brush to actually made a primer?

"We are the Children of the Desert Mother,"

The Desert Mother..? This is ringing a bell, but from where..?

@Baran3

Heh, so the funny thing was, due to how the session got split, I couldn't resolve the Sun Market experience in one go- @Aleph's in the UK, and I'm on west coast USA, so for her, she runs the game in the evening, and I wake up around 9:30am to play. My original plan was to do something more aggressive with the Sun Market Slavers, but I hadn't slept well the night before, so I wasn't confident in my ability to leverage all of Inks's limited assets- and even up to Session 50, Inks is honestly pants at combat- far better than most lifestyle combatants (Dex 2, Melee 3, +3 Specialty and a Grandklave), but aside from an Excellency, Call the Blade and Summoning the Loyal Steel, she has no combat charms.

As part of the houserules (which I'm still organizing for publication, but it shares a lot with Kerisgame), we have Strategic Actions for downtime tracking. StW canonically uses concrete time measurement instead. And no, the Gods were not designed that way- and most of the time Solars were kept far out of Yu-Shan by dint of being drowned in red tape or encouraged to stay in Creation. Solars were always guests in Yu-Shan, not citizens.

Inks did not try to seduce Alakananda, as I feel her sexy attitude was more an outgrowth of her post-Exaltation life. Exaltation in my mind makes people feel safe, more willing to take risks and be adventurous. This wasn't to say that Inks was not cold or disinterested in sex, just that her confidence increased even more when she Exalted, and got over the 'oh shit am I anathema' phase. I lean into the presentation of core that your 'starting adventures' are actually a year or so out of Exaltation, so you can 'get over' those awkward moments. I have played through or been adjacent to dozens of people RPing through 'am I a monster' arcs. They exhaust me. I wanted to skip that and get right to 'Being an Exalt is fucking awesome!'

And yes, Inks Accidentally Venus- as Aleph pointed out, I achieved a Diff 7 prayer roll on threshold successes alone. Later on we make a gag about Sidereal Tinder:
Chejop Kejak: "Who is Inks, and why should I care?"
Gold Faction Sidereal- looks at her face. Swipes right.

Rankar is fascinating in that he has more than 2 personality traits, and they pull him in numerous directions. I as a player have to play him. It's glorious. And yes, I did use whirling brush- it's safe to assume Inks always uses it when writing nowadays. As for the Children of the Desert Mother, it's one of those lingering plot threads I keep forgetting...

The Desert Mother..? This is ringing a bell, but from where..?
You're probably thinking Cecelyne.
Won't be the first hint of Infernalist activity in the area, from the demon parts in the marketplace, to a whole bunch of later incidents.

EDIT: Not saying this one is a Yozi cult mind. Might be something else entirely. But it is rare for a politician to actively go after a religious group in Creation, or so it seems; antagonizing gods is not something you do lightly. So something's hinky.
Hahah! Thanks. Suleiman's an interesting character, and I'm definitely looking forward to how his character develops- note that next up is Session 51, so unless you read ahead in the pastebin logs, you won't know how things progress...
Having said that, Chapters 12, 13 and 14 are now live on Ao3!
Little detail I missed on my first read:
Chapter 12 said:
Carsa's eyes widened. "Like them clothes the really rich have; the ones that... that clean themselves. But they don't keep the ones who wear them clean too..." She steps closer, peering at the sparkling chip of adamant. "Where'd you get such a thing?"
Transformative Clothing mention, suggesting Jadeborn trade.
Either that, or clothes with an Elemental Benediction of Wood. Either way, someone is either doing trade in magic clothes and artifacts, in enough quantity for a servant to recognize an association.

One of those dangling plot threads.
Of course, given Iblan's mining connections, they should be aware of any Firstborn activity in the local area.

EDIT
Iblan Asenya the Dragonblooded sorceress probably has Opinions about Inks current altercation with House Iblan.
You and Aleph probably want to keep it in mind as a possible complication.

Unless she's died recently.
In which case you'd probably have to deal with the Greater Dead that's the likely result of the death of a powerful necro-tainted DB sorceress.

It's worth noting that Carsa was one of the Despot's slaves, so she was exposed to one of the few people even more hedonistic than Inks- Rankar VII. And I think Aleph was trying to inject more 'minor magic' into the game at that point, since we were pretty light on it. As for the Desert Mother, later research implied that it was an oasis god of sorts, but I hadn't had the chance to really investigate further.

Iblan Asenya is still alive, as of session 50. I don't know what 'Firstborn' means. Yozi cultists? As far as I know, Asenya is firmly apolitical except when itcomes to managing the mines, and can be summarized as 'No you fucks don't do that you'll ruin everything.'

Ah.
Asenya's necrotaint looks more sinister after you experience the ......thing in the mines. If she's apolitical, that suggests her threat is much longerterm than the rest of the family.

Firstborn=Jadeborn.

The thing about Asenya, is that she basically picked up a chronic condition from her profession. Not everything in Creation is the result of some nefarious pact and not even an Exalt is wholly immune to the traumas of the world. She's been working in the mines, and the shadowmines for likely a century or more. I'm sure that if Inks had done something similar without precautions, she'd be experiencing something like Asenya's condition as well. As it stands, Asenya is nearing the 'natural' 250 year or so lifespan of a DB, and baring dramatic lifestyle changes, she won't be able to reach the normal means of DB life extension like heightened Essence.

The mines, I feel, are just a very dense shadowland that is full of ghosts who died hard and badly, and that has attracted something far more powerful, or became far more powerful. There's in-campaign precedent we hope to explore, with lower levels of sorcery having less effective means of cleansing shadowlands, but the number of Sapphire Circle sorcerers that Rankar could call upon is... minuscule. and it hasn't come up in-game yet, that Inks has attained Sapphire Circle either. I don't know any spells yet.

There is a possibility that Jadeborn have access to the south. Creation underworld is vaster than you think. However, the most logical thing would be a magical trinket from a dragonblooded since the empress did receive tribute from the Jadeborns.

"I'm trying to solve a murder and keep the Despot from declaring bloody justice on the perpetrator. Ran into an exorcist-ghost I think with some fantastic plans."

Inks: "What's this all about?"

Mysterious Ally: "The Shadow knows."

Inks, blinking: "...Wait… What..? Seriously?!"

"And one could stop. asking. questions~"

1000% Harem protagonist...right…

Ah, the eternal question of which Ability governs the bedroom.

Although it was an April Fool joke, ExXxalted is still a good reference. So either Presence, Performance or Athletics. Defence against that depend on Integrity.

The 3°ed do however place firmly Performance for anything sexual, including some nice charms.

Inks:(Hai Pepper!)

In-game joke?

Evidently the scent of whatever alchemical powders and lotions Hinna used irritated his sensitive nose.

It could also mask something that Hinna don't want the tiger to know.

Inks: (I'm getting 'Cult of the Illuminated' vibes)
ST: :) 3)

You're not the only one. I'm not too sure about those guys. Oh sure they are useful and most are sincere but… They are still perpetuating the lies of the Bronze faction in a way.

Canon-wise, I think the only solar in Creation knowing the full truth about the betrayal of the siderals is the Emissary of Nexus (the solar version).

"Oh- I exploited a particular quality of Okidaci- their skins are superheated and build up thick coats of stone and ceramic. When you add the right reagents, their skins make more exotic gemstones."

Huh..? Didn't Inks want this information to stay secret at the very beginning?

I thought you were running away from a marriage or something simple.

Yeah, certainly an archetype of this kind of story, right?

Inks: (Also don't think I didn't notice the Abyssal Teasing!)

Creation is vast, but it could be a foreshadowing.

ST: ((Or turning those old signposts into weapons.))
Inks: (The jade ones?)
ST: ((The ones she got at the Sun Market, yeah.))
Inks: (I didn't know they were signposts, i never got around to repairing them or translating them)
Inks: (Or maybe I did repair them, but i know I didn't translate them)
ST: ((...))
ST: ((shitfuckgoddammit))

 It happens. Better than having your players pull an ambush on the super-duper end-boss you worked a long time on it and blast it in one round… I was ARGH!

Inks blinked. "Remind me to... I don't know. Do something. Give you a bonus."

A kiss?

Inks: There's also a degree of lots of introduction/exposition. My plate is already pretty full with personal projects and now i'm seeing Hinna's research arc, the exorcist/murder plot, Ajjim having found a hell-source of some sort…

True, too much things at the same time. Perhaps the scenario was for a full circle..? Or everything has a common point.

Jadeborn arguably have access Everywhere, they just can't go above surface without writ from an Exalt. And heh, good play with the Shadow gag. And yes, Inks is 1000% harem protagonist. For the sake of saying so, Sunlit Sands is run using a houseruled but largely base 2e ruleset, as I have opinions on 3rd edition. Most of them negative and not worth mucking up the thread.

Pipera is a deliberate reference to Pepper Potts, in that Inks is 'Genderflipped Hephaestus-Tony-Stark'. Her core concept is not 'Iron Man' or 'Batman' or any of the other 'rich playboy superheroes', but instead Tony Stark, industrialist, or Bruce Wayne, old-money investor. Her go-to mindset is to solve problems with money and infrastructure, not technology, martial arts or combat magic. This is a good reference for what I'm going for re: Inks's personality.

Pipera, being Pepper, is the harried, under-appreciated but utterly valued personal assistant.

Hinna is a great character, and we'll see why as the logs progress! As for her reveal of the Okidaci gemcrafting, that was largely due to the fact that she didn't need it to be secret anymore. By this point in the campaign, she stopped making gems that way. And yes, 'marriage' is a recurring element in Inksgame.

Question why was the collar of cleansing light only resources one. Given how highly she values it you would think that it would be resources two or three. Especially since the temperature control is so valuable to the people on the other side of the screen.

Resources? Do you mean Artifact 1?

Artifacts are... complicated, but they're supposed to be, even these minor ones like Artifact 1s, wonders. That butts heads with the rules (which we're not directly using anyway) that it's actually pretty easy for a Mortal to make Artifact 1s with some regularity. (Ignoring that Mortals instead should be making Talismans, but talisman mechanics suck).

Generally, Exalted (2e) assumes that a dot rating is about how impactful the artifact is. In practice, the cleansing bindi does two things: it saves Inks time on grooming and hygine, both of which are important to her characterization, and when attuned, it adds +3 bonus dice to rolls against heat-based climate hazards. "Blistering sun" as opposed to 'being on fire." With the Bindi, Inks isn't sweating at all hours of the day, nor is she at all covered in sand. At most, she has the healthy glow or 'model sweaty' that's photogenic.

I want you to think about how that looks to joe mortal of Creation.

I probably wouldn't agree.

Sure a mortal can make Artifact 1s; short daiklaves, transformative clothing, perfected boots, aegis-inset amulets et cetera. But by RAW, said mortal requires a Master's workshop(Resources 4 to build, Resources 3 each month to maintain), and Ability minimums of 3 just to work without prohibitive penalties.

Then individually the mortal artisan requires the artifact template/design, Resources 2 worth of materials and one Exotic material per artifact. This may have been trivial in the First Age. In the Age of Sorrows it's a Big Deal according to Oadenol's Codex.

It's meant to be a big deal, but the actual nuts and bolts of Oadenol's means it's far less of a hassle than you might expect. We both agree on the spirit though. Like, in context of the silly kind of 2e logical extension, one of the iconic 1-dot artifacts is a Winterbreath Jar, which is one of those ridiculous things akin to 'Make Water' spells in DnD. Food preservation is such a gamechanger that you can beggar kingdoms with it.

Couple comments on a reread:
-Gion's prophecydreams of darkness look more sinister with a bigtime hekatonkhire under the Iblan estate, and one Creature of Death lurking around Tatters. Especially given the soulsteel arrow stuck in her ribcage.

-Going to note that you haven't revisited the issue of Tatters' injuries, even after improving your medical skills in the mountains.
I don't know why; it's been at least a year in-game.

You have Flawless Diagnosis Technique originally, and the 2nd Medicine Excellency, which you can combo together.
You picked up Wholeness-Restoring Meditation after healing Elemi Piercing Sun. You're now a Sapphire Circle sorcerer, so Sapphire sorcerous workings are presumably within your bailiwick.

The charms Ailment-Rectifying Method, Body-Purifying Admonitions are all within grasp.
If nothing else, Wholeness-Restoring Meditation might also help heal Tatter's ghost kitten's crushed ribcage.
Given Inks' modus operandi of engendering loyalty through thoughtfulness and generosity, something to consider.

Of course, alternatively, I will note that being E4, Order-Affirming Blow is an option.Depends on how you wish to take the story.

- Spending a single WP allows you to roll your Willpower and add the successes to your Feat of Strength roll.
Core pg 127 said:
If the character uses a stunt or channels a Virtue, add the bonus directly to the total. Channeling a Virtue adds its rating directly to the total.Spending a Willpower point for an automatic success allows the player to roll Willpower and add successes to the total.
A rule you forgot during the Hinna arc. Would have broadened your options substantially.

-I really did forget how evocative Elemi's healing was. And his last comment there
When you go, tell those proud princes on their peaks," he husked, "that the Dragon of the Burning Sands has back his wings."
That was cool.

Couple comments on a reread:

Yeah, Gion's prophecies, I wanted to follow up on those but so many plot threads. Hopefully as we move into more Strategic Play, I can start engaging with them again. On that note, open-call to the thread to help me catch old plothooks that I've forgotten.

The thing about Tatters, is that I'm not sure if her injury is an injury so much as How She Is now. And if she is an Abyssal, I don't want to fall into the lazy roleplaying trap of encouraging Redemption. I admit my bias is towards photogenic hotties, so Tatters right now is Cute and Adorable and Emotionally Satisfying, but she's not hot. This is a good thing for the health of the narrative, mind you. If everything went Inks's way in all ways, it'd be pretty boring and no real reason in Running. Pipera for example is fascinating and engaging because she's playing hard to get.

But yes, I do need to examine Tatters again and/or learn more about her. As we get closer to El-Galabi arc, that'll be more and more relevant.

Thing is, on a reread, it struck me just how promptly your PC intervened in the problems of others in comparison.
The sick people in the citystates. Promising a trade visit to Rankar to save Hinna's daughter. Or even the slavery problem in the Market.

She invests significant amounts of effort in other people she literally stumbles across, regardless of their value to her. Being aware of, but failing to do anything about Tatters, who has literally asked for nothing else, seems remarkably out of character for the woman who learned a charm in the same session specifically to heal Elemi on their second meeting.

She hasn't attempted to consult her mentor Nanda about the unhealing wounds. Or the weapon embedded in the wound.
Or even the metal; and she's an artisan of some skill and experience, so strange metals are a professional interest.
In contrast, she used a Messenger for Pipera's origins out of curiosity, and for Gion's prophecy dreams out of self-interest.

She didn't attempt to acquire better wound dressings, or attempt to figure out if painkillers were in order.
Neither preliminary background investigative work nor palliative care is underway.

I mean, she hasn't even offered to take a look at the ghostkitten, and I'm pretty sure Wholeness-Restoring Meditation allows you to attempt to stage an intervention there, since it counts as supernatural treatment.
I'd say Inks has been rather taking her for granted, in a way she hasn't treated any other of her associates.

As for permanency, by Abyssals RAW the only permanent change is the name. Body doesn't undergo forced change, and is entirely fixable if damaged. And note that even if that's the way she is now, the fact Tatters brought it up when she's not asked for anything else suggests it's bothering her, physically or mentally.

And Solar Medicine is well up to the task of changing that if you so choose.
Might need to be a quest/project of its own, with the need to acquire rare materials and the like. But it can be done.

I mean, it would be one thing if you'd characterized Inks like Etiyadi; generous, but only to people that meet a standard. Then it would be IC for Inks to subconsciously shy away from Tatters because she isn't pretty.
But that's not how you've played your Twilight.

I understand a reluctance to come off as Inks solving everything, but that's something to discuss with @Aleph.

PS
It also occurs to me that said arrow/javelin in her chest may well be an arcane link for whoever shot her to track her.
Or just a promise of delayed death. Because it may be the Abyssal mirror of Branding Judgement Attack.
BURROWING BONE MAGGOT
Cost: — (2m per attack)
Mins: Thrown 3, Essence 3
Type: Permanent
Keywords: Avatar (1), Crippling, Mirror (Branding Judgment Attack; follows), Obvious, Stackable
Duration: Indefinite
Prerequisite Charms: Any Thrown Excellency, Improvised Assassin's Trick

The momentary pleasure of murder is nothing compared to a lifetime of savoring a victim's terror and agony. An Abyssal who knows this Charm can reflexively enhance any Thrown attack that inflicted at least one level of damage by committing two motes to the attack. Doing so dissolves the Essence of the deathknight's weapon into the point of impact so it appears to physically crawl through the skin—the process does not wake sleeping victims, though. The dissolved attack does not inflict any damage or other effects during Step Ten of attack resolution. Instead, the doom waits in abeyance for the deathknight to terminate the commitment from anywhere in existence with a diceless miscellaneous action In so doing, he can either harmlessly give pardon or apply the delayed effects in full. Wounds inflicted this way manifest in whatever gruesome manner the Abyssal finds instructive and/or poetically appropriate, using the damage the player rolled at the time of attack.

Even the Abyssal's death does not end the curse, leaving it to the Neverborn to decide when they wish to inflict the damage. Multiple uses of this Charm on the same victim track separately, and only the last attack in a flurry may be deferred. Mundane medicine cannot cure the Crippling curse of a Burrowing Bone Maggot.

New Solar Charm: Branding Judgment Attack (Prerequisites: any Thrown Excellency, Returning Weapon Concentration; Exalted, p. 196). The Solar Mirror to Burrowing Bone Maggot functions identically, apart from lacking the Avatar keyword and leaving Heaven to decide when to resolve a judgment that outlives its judge.
Plot hook:
Gion's dreams
Volcano god's missing drum
Volcano gods memoirs(you might want to send to Nandi as a gift)

QUESTION
What would happen if someone captured a Lunar and stuck them in a Monstrance?
