You've never seen Fuyao with a skip to her step before.

It's rather adorable

yaaay!

"It's bigger on the inside?"

"Yes."

"It has everything in my shop including my desk."

"Indeed it does."

Baerun: *raises eyebrow* Indeed.

... i have concerns over this soup

[X] [You attempt to clear the confusion with Ignis]

at worst this upsets her, at best she decides she needs to court Baerun 'properly' .... by fighting alongside him or some such.

Baeran is level 20.

Baeran can fight gods and live. Not all of them, but the world moves as he does. He is the absolutely peak of what a mortal can be, and more. As a Paladin he can at twenty he is extremely hard to kill and is resistant if not immune to most things attempting to hurt him.
A mere level 20 :p
So is this a setting where there's legit a level cap at 20 or are there some characters like 10 or even like 15 levels above 20 like baba yaga running around?

D&D caps at 20. Not Pathfinder.
Ehhh yours might I know for a fact there are beyond level 20 campaigns for d&d and character sheets. Also pathfinder kinda does cap at 20 for the most part from what I've seen it's mythic ranks that sorta let others go past it. Given like any rpg I'm fairly sure there are different systems to go about. Like cause there are plenty of characters who were well past level 20 effectively just in general lore like karsus was easily over a dozen levels past twenty and plenty of the leaders of netheril cities while not as bullshit as karsus were past level 20 and near 40. I know depending on edition and game eliminster was somewhere a bit over level 30. Like there's more characters of course and plenty of people have had their own games go past level 20. But there are plenty of groups and even standards that cap the level but I know plenty have also gone past 20z

If you knew some NPCs could, why ask to begin with? He's at the limit of what players can achieve normally.

I was asking about your world cause like qms can change that and I was curious about here. When you said d&d caps at 20 it sounded like a general statement and I just wanted too add that it's not exactly true even if it's true for a lot. I mean a sigil campaign is kinda hilarious in how bullshit things can get for example. Did you know sigil can have like level 10 mooks like the equivalent of street gang thugs who are level 10+? Cause you know it's fucking sigil? Actual power players beingfuck strong and the end of most campaigns at level 20 character is just the level of being a moderately powerful street gang power player instead of the ender of nations they are in most everywhere else.

Great to hear for Sigil.

In any case, this is the Forgotten Realms as stated in the intro. It caps at 20. The system can go beyond that with boons, but the game isn't balanced for it.

Yeah there are npcs and such and modules and home brew and stuff that goes beyond 20. But often times the mechanics aren't always really there or defined well for what I know so most of like at least half of campaigns end there if they ever get there. Also you probably know how in different editions or modules famous npcs levels are adjusted cause in 3rd edition elminster is like level 20 wizard level 9 or something archmage, level 1 fighter, and like 3 more assorted levels for other classes. While in fifth edition I think their 'just' level 19 wizard or how strahd can vary from like level 12 to anything slightly above 20 at his worst. Offhand did the mc go through any traditional modules in his earlier days?

Misunderstandings are only fun to watch from the outside, no one will be better off if we let it fester.

We really should check on Ilias after we sort things out with Ignis and Brynhild. She's been sitting at -4 for a while now. Last we saw her she was trying to drine herself in wine. I don't want to see what happens if she manages to get drunk

Ilias is a suicidal Evil deity that Baeran met yesterday and reluctantly chose not to kill on sight in the interest of finding out more about this whole portal thing. Having a poor relationship is expected and not something I see changing anytime soon, we're just serving as a warden while she drinks herself unconscious in a gilded cage and tries to process that genociding all the non-humans wasn't a great plan.

She'll have vote options come the evening.

I missed this quest for some reason. And there weren't any tags for me to know what I was getting into. At first I thought MGE some kind of ruleset/setting like MTG or a cross with a magical girl show, and it took a whole centauress dropped on our head to realize something is amiss, and that in fact I know some other abbreviations those letters could stand for.
Sometimes it takes an apple to figure things out, and sometimes it takes a horse-girl.
"I don't like mind-altering crap boss, never have. Not in Kara-tur, not here." Fuyao replies. "And I wanted this over, quickly. She was screwing with my mind while I was talking to her and I wasn't going to let her get away with that."

"She wasn't evil," you reply. "It would seem tricks were in her nature, but I am not here to pass judgment regarding that, not while she is unconscious. I'm here to ask why you went without orders twice."

"You weren't there," Fuyao replies. "And you'd probably just let her get away with it."
...this is worse than being an anime protagonist. Unlike in anime, it didn't get dragged out, and thank the gods for that.

Can't help noticing that Baeran did just let Miki get away with it. Fuyao wouldn't tell what the damage was, and so Baeran either remains clueless, or thinks little of it. I'd say the pummeling was well-deserved. It was already a bit much with the villagers, and unlike them Fuyao didn't give permission to be put under an illusion.

And Miki does understand consent; it's her line of lawful defense, after all. Making it a conscious transgression that I haven't seen her be sorry for.

[x] [You questioned Brynhild about her… apparent plotting]

To be fair, I'd rather be speaking to Ilias. I wonder if she can be allowed to travel alongside us, and what we as players can do to shorten the path, because Baeran as he is now sure isn't willing to let her.

You were going to get to the bottom of Brynhild's frequent disappearances, and the effect that at this point, you knew she was having on people. And you were going to do so now. Before you dealt with Ignis, before you unraveled the confusion regarding Ilias, before you truly decided on what would be appropriate for Miki.

"Brynhild, I wish to speak with you, privately."

The centauress gives you a curious look, her white hair shifting as a breeze carries across the campsite. Then she nods. "Certainly sir, lead the way?"

Without another word you begin to walk further in the wood. Finding an animal path to make your way down was easy enough, this section of the Sword Coast was filled to the brim with deer and boar… amongst other myriad creatures that posed little threat to you. This forest, like many others that dotted the landscape around here was old, its mysteries deep and its depths seldom explored except by only the very brave and foolhardy. Or, perhaps more simply put, adventurers and those who wished to be lost. It had a name, of that you were certain, known to the beasts who traipse it, and those who take care of the wilds. But you did not know it, nor did you much care for the Druids. Their craft you understood, respected, and politely kept away from. But their stance of neutrality… never sat quite right with you. You could understand the perspective, after all, nature does not pick sides. But then, nature in your experience was hardly sentient in the same way a man, elf, or dwarf may be. Nature couldn't choose, the druids however, had a choice.

They simply chose to do nothing for the common man. It was not exactly a popular opinion to have, but then, it had never been your duty to speak for whatever adventuring group you had been a part of at any given moment. Tallia, Strixtovaten, Vladimir, they had all had skilled tongues and a gift for persuasion. You, meanwhile, just tended to follow your nose, literally, in the search of evil to destroy it.

It was, perhaps, what made the current quest you had found yourself on so difficult. So… complex to unravel. Evil was evil, an evil action was an evil action. You could forgive evil for ignorance, you could forgive it for mistake, at least for both within reason. But as part of it being the very nature of oneself… that, that was more difficult. You are still concerned deeply regarding the fact that apparently Succubi are not only normal amongst Brynhild and Ignis's ilk, but they worked wholly different than what you were used to. That seemed more like a ploy than any form of truth, and it was something you would have to verify for yourself. Though you dearly wished you didn't have to.

Would that the Hells could be brushed away with a wave of the hand, but, alas.

"Sir?"

You pull yourself back from your thoughts to look to Brynhild, the centauress walking just beside you down the forest path. "Yes?"

"You appear lost in thought, is… something the matter?"

"Indeed there is," you reply. You come to a stop on the path, then look back… and see nothing but the path in the opposite direction. Satisfied you were now well out of earshot, you turn to face Brynhild, one hand resting on the pommel of your sword, the other hanging down at your side. "There is something I've been wanting to speak to you about for some time now?"

"Oh?" Brynhild asks, a smile forming on her face. "Whatever could that be sir?" her tone was deliberately calm, but the light taps of her hooves against the ground spoke of her excitement clearly enough.

"Tell me Brynhild, what are your thoughts on what Miki was doing in the village?"

"I… think she was being a bit destructive sir, but I know her type, they tend to cause chaos."

"And do you think her actions were wrong?" you ask. "Controlling the minds of the villagers, causing them to see and feel things that weren't real?"

"She wasn't doing them any harm sir, at least, not that I could see. Not permanently, I disapprove of her causing such a mess to be certain, but I believe Fuyao was acting perhaps too harshly."

You sigh.

"Why are you placing me in the position where I might have to end your existence, Brynhild?" you ask bluntly. "I do not wish to do so, but you are dancing atop the razor's edge like a drunken halfling."

The tapping freezes, the smile remains, but more due to confusion than anything else you would surmise. "I… apologize sir, but… what could I have possibly done to have caused such a thing?"

"I had an inkling, a suspicion, that you were affecting me in some manner ever since you confessed your desires to me that night in my room. I accepted that however, attributing it more to an accident than anything else. And, I would be willing to continue to put up with it and simply ignore it if that was the price I had to pay to take care of you." You sigh. "I deeply regret my accidental summoning of you Brynhild, I truly do. I ripped you away from your home and, due to being who and what I am, will put you in danger despite my best efforts. Your life is more valuable than my own until I settle that. However, I am also a Paladin of the Crown, and I will not stand for you affecting Fuyao or anyone else against their will."

Brynhild's face goes through a myriad of expression, anger, confusion, concern, the whole gamut during your little speech. She finally settles however, on just the confusion. "Sir, what exactly is a 'Paladin of the Crown'?"

"I believe that the world is most at peace when laws are followed and order is maintained. Anyone who would cause chaos is an enemy, and will be put upon the proper path or slain, if they are doing so maliciously. Otherwise I will guide." You look back towards the campsite, out of view as it was. "It was why I have used such a gentle touch with Miki. Were she malicious in her action, deliberately. Her head would no longer be attached to her shoulders."

You look back, Brynhild was looking at you with… some fright now. That bothered you, but you ignored it. "My world… it is a myriad thing. Myriad species, beliefs, and understandings of morality. I hold no allegiance to a general law or king. I just seek order to be maintained, chaos breeds nothing but madness and strife. I bow to no king, and my goddess simply wishes for me to preserve beauty in this world. Miki was causing chaos, but she wasn't, in her own view, being malicious. To punish a being for simply being confused would be an atrocity." You smile, slightly. "That, and being able to tell when someone is evil helps."

Then the smile drops. "You however know precisely what you are doing, seek to derive pleasure from it of a sexual manner, and nearly brainwashed a close and personal friend of mine to do it. I understand to you this may be something normal, I have never seen one of your species, nor do I have anything to compare you to here besides the unicorn. But I shall not suffer myself, or my friends, to be brainwashed again." There was an inkling there, a memory you kept locked away. And you shove it back, those were personal demons that had little to do with this. Or, at least, that was what you could tell yourself at the moment.

"Sir, I did not mean any ha-"

"I'm sure you didn't," you reply. "I tolerated it when it was myself. Drug the mind of another again and you will understand the fraction of fury I showed here today. Delivered entirely unto your person. Do not enchant Fuyao, or anyone else for that matter."

Brynhild bristles. "Baeran, I am who I am. And if you are speaking of the case that led to that kiss between the two of you. That was entirely for the happiness of you both."

And you, of course. You think to yourself.

"Is this part of your species? Like combat is for Ignis?"

Brynhild stares at you for several long seconds, saying nothing. "There is no species sir. I am, for ease, called a bicorn. But bicorns are not born naturally, I was a… victim, it was something I had no control over. And due to that I have become what you see before you now."

"I know of creatures similar to Miki," you reply. "I know of salamanders as well, though… they are quite literally large salamanders, a form of amphibian if you aren't aware. But I only know of the unicorn."

"I cannot speak as to any legends of my species that may or may not exist in Faerun sir. But in my world, we are not common. We cause… love to happen around us. And it is the purpose for my existence. I seek out a man who tickles my fancy, then I gather women around him, it is what completes me."

"Is that why you approached me regarding Ignis?"

"Partially," Brynhild admits. "But I also wish to see her happy. She is a muscle-bound buffoon of a woman, but she deserves joy as well. You are leading her down a path of self-destruction that can only end in her heart shattering."

Ignis seeks combat, Brynhild seeks to… create a harem. That…

Hmm.

"Why lie, Brynhild? If I may ask." Changing the subject. "I know you're putting on airs."

"Is it a sin to wish to be more than what you are, sir?" Brynhild asks. "Or do you take offense to that part of me as well?"

"Of course it isn't Brynhild." You reply. "I will be handling Ignis, of that I assure you. The last thing I want is to cause anyone strife. And I've valued your company greatly as well, but I will not stand for you muddling the mind of my closest companion. I have had… bad experiences with such things in the past. I am deeply uncomfortable with it, and many others would likely attack you for the attempt."

Brynhild raises a brow. "In my experience sir, humans tend to appreciate it greatly. But I shall keep your wish in mind, I do not wish to aggrieve you, and while this is a part of what I am. It is not the sole driving force of my existence either."

Then she turns to leave.

"There are plenty in this world who play matchmaker without the need for… whatever it is you are doing Brynhild."

"And there are those who defeat evil with words instead of a blade sir, but it would seem you have had little luck in that regard recently." Brynhild snipes back. "You give Ignis an impossible task, then you ask me to simply stop being who I am." She turns back, taking a step towards you as she does so. "Perhaps ah should go back to talkin' like this? Ya got a problem with how ah talk as well?"

"I do not Brynhild," you reply. "I merely ask that you restrain yourself."

"I have been Sir," Brynhild replies, sounding like a noble lady once more. "You are everything I've ever wanted, in multiple ways at that. If I thought I was capable I would have pinned you to the ground myself, but I do not wish to chase you off, either." A frown forms on her face. "I had thought you would fall to Ignis that night, but you restrained yourself. Are we repulsive, Sir?"

"Brynhild you are beautiful, and I believe you are fully aware of that." You reply.

"I am sexual Sir. But beautiful is another matter. I am aware that I am but half a woman, and there was a time before now I was more… desirable. But now I seek the pleasure of others." Brynhild looks away. "Or rather, I seek to allow others pleasure so that I might feel some myself."

"You were… desperate that night in my room."

"I did not believe myself ever capable of having such a chance again sir."

"Why?"

"With all due respect sir, that is none of your business," Brynhild replies, a touch of acid to her tone. "And, regardless. If you wish for me to restrain myself I will, as I stated previously. But much like Ignis I cannot change who and what I am either."

Her hands raise up to her shoulders, and with a smooth motion she pulls both down, lowering the dress. Her dress was a silken thing, well made and with a transparent section at the top to show the nape. Now in a manner of seconds it was polled around her 'waist', revealing skin far paler than that of her face and arms. You had thought her darker skinned by nature, that, however, was simply a tan it turned out. Beyond the glow of her hands and face, her skin was paler by several degrees. She was free of blemishes, with large breasts, not quite the size of Ignis, but not inconsiderable either, they jiggled and moved with every breath, sagging quite a fair bit. You stared at them for but a moment, more out of confusion than anything else, before you focused on her face again. She looked… resigned. Not excited, or nervous. Ashamed.

"I am not a being to be desired sir, no longer. But we are of a sexual nature regardless, I understand your… restrictions, at this point. But you must understand that Ignis has chosen you for her mate, and you are everything I have ever wanted. I will limit myself, but I will not give up either."

"I am aware of my own limitations, but that is why I support others."

"Brynhild you are beautiful," you reply. "But I am also taken with Fuyao at the moment."

Brynhild tilts her head, "Sir, while I understand you may be monogamous. Such a concept is rare on my world. Ignis will certainly not care that you and Fuyao are an item, and I see it as a goal. Would you consider changing that belief sir? If you do not, things will only become more difficult. I am sorry to spring this upon you, but we do all seek husbands, in one way or another. The succubi, the salamander, the bicorn and the cheshire." She ends the sentence with some annoyance, but continues on, readjusting her dress so she is fully clothed once more. "We are quite dedicated as well, but that is neither here nor there. Is there anything else you wish to discuss, Sir?"

I get the feeling pushing Brynhild on her past would rub her a bit the wrong way right now, since she flinched away from it so hard already. That said, learning more about her can't hurt, and the explanation of Cheshires may go interestingly, especially if it delves into Wonderland a bit.
