[X] Action Plan: Bug Trap
  • Salvage anything of value from the Lava Deer -- buck head for trophy, meat to sell, etc.
  • Alert the civilians that there is a bunch of free deer meat nearby.
  • Clear out the spider wasps, suggested tactics:
    • Syrup Trap to knock them out of the air/immobilize them and then kill them with ranged weapons, while the melee combatants guard the ranged fighters against any spider wasp that escapes the syrup.
    • AoE attacks are generally very useful against swarms of enemies -- Jun knows Surging Seas at least.
    • Be alert to the potential that this a trap by enemy ninja to draw in Rain ninja, be vigilant.
  • Momoka -- harvest any available venom after the battle.
  • Rest and recover chakra away from the village -- there likely are enemy ninja active in the area.
  • Look for clues of ninja egress or ingress from the village in the morning.
    • Investigate closely local sources of water -- seems likely that the enemy ninja were there at some point recent
  • If the village seems clear, prepare a ruse for any enemy ninja.
    • Split the genin off from Jun, they will interview the villagers.
      • Be suspicious of any new people in, or travellers to the village -- they could be foreign ninja, interview their neighbors.
    • Jun will shadow the genin, ready to strike any ninja(s) that feel they can take 3 genin.
    • Make an effort to keep civilian casualties low if a fight does break out.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of distress, the villagers might be being coerced by foreign ninja.
  • If everything seems clear, and there's no hot trail, have Shion treat the sick villagers, try to determine what the cause of the poisoning is.
    • Inspect the bodies of those who have died as well, perhaps the poison isn't from the water?
    • Is there a detectable pattern in the dead? Could this have been targeted?
  • If the poison was locally sourced, that's a good lead. If the enemy ninja left signs of camps/tracks, follow up with that. If any suspicious strangers have passed through recently, that's another potential lead.
    • Hunt the enemy ninja down

That said, it isn't impossible it's bait to lure in investigators, though this settlement is pretty far from Hidden Rain for that (then again, that could just be to make the bait even sweeter.)
Since Jun survived the last war and has seen some shit (tm), does he have opinions on...

If potentially it was bait, would the ninja be lying in wait inside/outside the village for Rain ninja to investigate? Or would they try to disguise themselves as civilians (doubtful in a village of a few hundred, right?). Or perhaps position themselves along the road to ambush incoming ninja (disguising themselves as spider wasps???)

Are the spider wasps native to this area? There's nothing implausible about that?

All are plausible but not necessarily likely. There's no guarantee anyone even comes by the village you're at and you can't really afford sitting around and waiting unless you have a specific important target in mind (which your team lacks as far as you know)

Plausible

I guess since this is a market town, we could look for unusual goods on offer (see if there's any loot to be had) or if anyone came to town but didn't bring any goods for trade; we could also check if anyone had any unusual currency. I'm guessing there's not much of interest in a town this small, but you never know.

I guess we could also see if someone is willing to pay us regarding the spider wasps?

It might be worth investigating the spider wasp corpses for anything unusual? Though I can't imagine what traces might be left behind if a ninja was using them somehow.

Hm. Maybe we should use ourselves as bait for the enemy ninja? Stay far enough apart that they can't hit us with an aoe so Kobayashi can sub with whoever they target.

Or somehow work out a way to use water clones for that, maybe?

Hmmmm I think this has legs. Have Jun stealth around and follow the genin while we talk to the villagers. Then pounce if we get attacked.

This is gutsy.

YOLO!

We should figure out some way to keep the civvies we're talking to safe, too.

Bonus XP.
Could keep MEW user closest to the village, so she can throw up a granite wall if it looks like there'll be backsplash?
Oh I was meaning -- in the plan, Jun's shadowing us as we talk to civvies in anticipation of an attack.
I don't think I understand what you guys are asking for. We can make an effort to avoid civvie casualties but we don't really get to choose. None of our good stuff is AoE, so it doesn't really have the potential for friendly fire. And if we get jumped it's not like we can realistically stop them from killing civvies, we'd be better off putting them down ASAP.

I'm liking every team member so far!

NGL I know it's not at ALL your intention since I don't think you play the series, but I'm really getting some Fire Emblem vibes. The deer are running towards the farmstead, so Jun can leave it since that's easier in the fight, or move quickly to save it. And being the Lord archetype, he doesn't even think about it and goes to save it. He even has a compel for it! He then gets a post-chapter dialogue with the saved civs that unlocks a new Paralogue chapter in a nearby town. The town has more defenseless civilians, and saving more of them gives you Bonus EXP to allocate to your team.

I like the QM notes in the post-rolls section explaining what you're thinking / feeling while you're writing, good to have that insight from our end too I think.

RE Village Sabotage: Enemy ninja are choosing to sabotage instead of outright attack or destroy the village. A team of ninja could probably easily wipe a town if there are no other shinobi to interfere, so the most likely reasons for this route I'd think of are:
a) they're being cautious and lack information, and are picking the safest method of damage
b) they want to do the damage in a deniable way
c) they're looking to bait a response from ninja sent to help the town (i.e. us), and then kill/capture those ninja as their real target for actual damage to their enemies / actual valuable information respectively

I'm contemplating whether the team would want to come in openly as ninja to the town or not. If we do, the enemy ninja will be aware that our team is around, but we won't know exactly where they are. The way I see it, if we're anonymous, then it's a direct comparison of our skills vs. theirs with a small advantage for us since they aren't expecting us, and we're expecting them.

@Shrooms is henge a thing in this universe, or is it grue'd since it's too OP for everyone to have?
