Stark Quest 2.0: The Search for Shinies

Are people really happy telling Tavar's hopefully former host that we (remember, this could still be Tavar playing a role) have been in contact other Forsaken and know about them. It pretty much means we can never release her, we either have to keep her or kill her.

Since she's got no family and she'd be a valuable asset, taking her with us is perfectly viable.

The cyvasse playing is just stupid. I have no words for it beyond that.

She likes books, which means she's got an intellectual side. Teaching her an intellectual game may very well appeal to her.

We mentioned reading about the Forsaken in a book. It isn't even a lie - don't we actually have the book?

It talks about defeating Ithroen's attempt to possess us, which tells her that we've been in contact with another Forsaken.

The cyvasse is just an example of something to do with her. It's pretty clear it's the lowest priority (even just talking with her is). But we can't be studying nonstop, and will certainly have a bit of leftover time anyways.

We have plenty of other more important things to be doing, such as surveying the city from within a bird, planning, working on the information that we've gathered, and breaking Illyrio's ciphered book.

Since she's got no family and she'd be a valuable asset, taking her with us is perfectly viable.

It's premature even to be considering that. Anything she's just told us could easily be a lie. We need Ithroen to verify that she is who she says she is before we can tell her anything sensitive.

So? We've much more important things to do.

I don't think we do.

@Mazrick, how long would it take (in hours) for Harlon to rewrite the forsaken book?

Would it take even an hour? I seem to recall it was pretty short?

Yep. Another mage could be very usefull.

Yes. And sometime in between all that non-stop planning, a conversation with her would make an acceptable change of pace.

Tally. Partly so I can actually see whats different between Van Ropens new plan. :)

Vote tally:

[X] She seems like a victim, but still she needs to stay in her cell
-[X] She still perceives Tavar as a goddess. That could bring trouble. Assign two good men to guard her. They should be physically strong but not intimidating. As a pleasure slave, she must have a certain distrust of big men. The guards should also be men who won't lose their heads because they see a pretty woman. Tell the guards that she has some...esoteric skills and that she could be dangerous if she wants to be. Tell them to keep an eye out for unusual things, like if one of them acts strangely. In such a case, it would be likely that this is Erina's doing. If something like that happens, they should not shy away from knocking her out. Though do try not to harm her.
[X] Write-in: Take counsel with Jon. Run all the plans that you've come up with by him. From all that he's heard about Dany, how does he think we should approach her? We'll have to deal with her soon - and with Viserys too. Kal Drogo seems too dangerous now - especially, because we don't know what exactly being a Champion of some heathen gods implies. Until we know more, we should not act, if at all possible. Also talk about how to deal with Robb. He will want answers soon and Jon, who is much more warrior than we are, knows Robb better in some ways. What does Jon think? He is our brother and our most trusted man. He gives us good advice and keeps us from going too far. We understand that now and appreciate it.

[X] Handle Erina with caution. She may still regard Tavar as a goddess, in spite of being told otherwise. She may simply be trying to get on your good side to protect herself, but she's clearly using her charms to manipulate you. Keep her in her cell most of the time, but make sure she gets some chances to get out each day so she's not feeling trapped. Keep your mental defenses up when around her, as well as the cuendillar chain, and allow nobody to be in the same room with her without you or either Jon or Robb in Shardplate present.
-[X] Her door should be guarded always by two men who know FV. Preferably ones who are already happily married.
-[X] Teach her about your own religion. Tell her of the Old Gods, the gods of earth, stone, and tree, and their laws, especially the one against slavery.
-[X] Tell her a bit about your prior experiences with demons. How you fought Narsuul and he possessed Red Ronyll, and without giving details about the Hightowers or that you have him bound how you fought off Ithroen's attempt to possess you, about reading the book that gave you details on the Forsaken and their names. Tavar, the Dreamless may sound innocuous enough on it's own, but when it's listed as the second among the likes of Alûthair, The Speaker of Obscenities, Labarta, The Diseased, or Dath'riel, The Sin it doesn't sound so good.
-[X] See if she knows cyvasse. If she doesn't, teach her and play a few games with her. Try to establish a rapport to get her to trust you. And do try not to utterly crush the poor girl if she's a novice at it. Maybe even let her win a game, if barely.
[X] Focus on Drogo. Find out what a Champion of the Gods is.
-[X] Possess a bird or two and do quick scouting runs on Drogo's manse to see if you can find if Ithroen has been taken prisoner. Train Possession to Level 3 so that you can do a longer runs. Use active Acceleration and Focus to speed up the training.
-[X] Continue to have some men discreetly search for Lord Hightower.
-[X] If you have spare time, decipher Illyrio's book.
-[X] Have some of the more studied men search bookstores to find books relating to religion and gods, and anything Occult. Have them bring back lists of titles so you can sort through and find what you want, and then have them purchase them.
-[X] Any other avenues of research Harlon would think of IC.

[X] Focus on Drogo. Find out what a Champion of the Gods is.
-[X] The Khal is the biggest threat to us right now, and we need to figure out what he is doing. You now know that magic and demons are real - what can be said of the gods? This notion of a divine Champion isn't something to be ignored or underestimated.
-[X] Have the men continue looking for Lord Hightower. Also be on the lookout for rumors about the Dothraki - the city must be abuzz with talk about their actions given the fire they were involved with at the docks.
-[X] Focus on improving your magic, specifically Possession. Use Focus + Acceleration and any other tricks you know to improve learning.
--[X] As soon as viable, use the birds procured by your men to scout out Drogo's manse via Possession. Figure out how defended it is, and try to confirm the presence of Jorah, Ithroen, or Malora.
[X] Interrogate Viserys
-[X] His sister is still unconscious, and the far more dangerous of the pair. Use this down time to see if the Pretender has any information. While you have seen little suggesting any particular cunning on his part, do not underestimate him. Jon is to be ready to subdue him if necessary.
-[X] It is unlikely he would tell us anything willingly, but Harlon is much smarter than he is. It shouldn't be possible to use his temper and arrogance against him, leading him into giving up information. Now that he is out of the Shardplate, use of Mind Magic may help this - for example, Aura's could make him more pliable.
-[X] Focus primarily on any information he has on Drogo, Illyrio's allies, or anything else Harlon thinks could be useful for surviving this ordeal.
-[X] Afterwards, confirm his plans for Dany and Westeros. Try to tease out more information about Dany - it may come in handy for her interrogation.
[X] Keep Dany unconscious for now, ensuring her continued health with your medical skills. She is too dangerous to deserve anything less than our full attention, and information from Viserys or help from Erlina may prove useful in her own interrogation.
-[X] If her health is in danger or more Essence of Night can't be bough, reassess.
[X] Handle Erina with caution. She might still regard Tavar as a goddess, in spite of being told otherwise. While she may simply be trying to get on your good side to protect herself, she is nonetheless clearly using her charms to manipulate you. -[X] Multi-task. We may have other pressing concerns, and this is rather low priority as long as her needs are seen to. If nothing else, practice magic while we talk to her.

Yes. And sometime in between all that non-stop planning, a conversation with her would make an acceptable change of pace.

We have plenty of other people to talk to who haven't been changed by learning Names in ways we can't predict or control.

For example, talking to the Hightower guardsmen whose lord has disappeared that they've not failed him and that we're doing everything we can to look for him would probably go down better than secluding ourselves with a pretty girl while ignoring them and the concerns they probably have about the situation.

@Van Ropen - I don't see the point on interrogating Viserys. Ithroen has possessed him, and he really knows nothing of importance from what Ithroen told us.

You mean like Jon has no doubt already done, given he's been working with them closely this entire time?

Yeah, nothing of importance for our assault on Illyrio's manse. That's not the same as getting this from him IC. I don't see Harlon not interrogating someone who he knows has met Drogo, if only to be thorough.

It's not like it's a huge expense of time.

I'll add a one liner for it then. Something like "Interrogate Viserys. You doubt he knows anything, but there's always the off chance he does. Use the Aura and Control Sequences to try to get him to cooperate." No need for a wall of text for an idiot.

@Mazrick, can you confirm that the Hightower guards have been talked to and that we have promised to do our best to rescue "Hightower"? Seems like the kind of obvious off-screen thing we should not need to worry about?

Ah, the classic underestimate our enemies bullshit. It's not like that hasn't screwed us over countless times before.

I agree with Van Ropen here. Harlon wouldn't keep someone hostage and not once talk to him. That is bad behavior. You have to talk to them and explain your evil plan, before letting them in the room with some apparat that will kill them eventually.. Wait when did we turn into a super villain??

But, yeah. If you would put that in your plan, Enjou, then the vote would be over and I would vote for you, too.

Jon's a bastard, something that in the south is a very big deal. We're in charge here, so it's something we need to do. Lord Hightower placed them under our command, not his.

He's a Shardbearer, our First Sword, and he's also fought by their side now. He also managed to fight two other Shardbearers at once, capturing one alive and driving the other off. They're probably pretty damn impressed with him.

Also, Robb is working with them too.

Already added something. Not as detailed, but doesn't need to be w/ Viserys. He's not worth a wall of text.

Jon's a Shardbearer. One of the 100 in Westeros.

He's our First Sword, an extension of our authority:

So? Why should they care about that? He's not the First Sword of the Hightowers. They can't know that Ithroen is our vassal, so as far as they know Lord Hightower is our superior. This is a delicate situation that needs to be handled carefully.

If there's time to play pointless games with a pretty girl, there's time to talk to the majority of our soldiers, rather than totally ignore them. Leadership is something that is our responsibility. Flirting isn't.

It costs us literally nothing to be detailed, beyond two clicks to copy/paste. It's not like Mazrick isn't free to run the interrogation however he wants, or hasn't read the text anyways. The plan is hardly short, :p

[X] Plan Van Ropen

REASONING: I see no harm in interrogating Viserys in detail. Sure, Ithroen already checked his mind, but if nothing else we can get a good idea of his personality this way.

If nothing else, learning how he speaks and acts could come in handy later.

It's also good to verify what Ithroen tells us. He doesn't need to lie by manipulating us by controlling what information he decides is important enough to tell us.

-[X] After you have spoken with Jon, you will decide on what exactly you will do now.
--[X] You and Jon will go talk to the men to keep up morale, perhaps lead them in prayer to the Gods for the souls of your fallen and that all of you survive to make it home.
--[X] You will talk to Robb, if both you and Jon think it a good idea. Both of you should prepare a strategy on how to handle him and what to tell him beforehand. A careful balance between a firm hand and brotherly love might be the way to go. His actions had been moronic, after all.
--[X] If you decide that you can safely interrogate Danaerys, then you will take all necessary precautions and decide on a game plan with Jon before doing so.
--[X] If you decide that Viserys has information you need, interrogate him. He might be the least dangerous of them all, but be careful regardless. If afterwards you think you won't need him for anything like magical rituals, as a gift for Robert or as a hostage, then - if Jon is fine with it - you, Harlon, will execute him yourself.

Reasoning: So, made some changes. Thoughts?

Generally I like it, with one exception. I don't think we should execute Viserys either way. The King is the one who condemned him to death, so we should give him to Robert to execute the sentence according to the Northern laws/traditions.

Viserys is a captive nobleman. There are forms and principles about how they should be treated. We have no right to kill him, to take the King's Justice into our own hands. Executing gently born prisoners isn't something we want to do or be known to do. If we give him to Robert, and Robert has Ilyn Payne cut off his head, then it's out of our hands, and we've done our duty while also keeping within the bounds of honour.

I think Eddard would respect that choice a lot more than simply murdering him because he's a hassle to keep - and that's the difference, killing him now would be murder rather than justice.
