Star Wars: Galaxy in Flames - Arda Ship Design Bureau

Kinda intrigued that "gunboat" wasn't an available option to feed the "rapid iteration until we have a team and a talent level we can do something worthwhile with" engine.

Can we abandon a project mid design to start another, if we're in design hell? And do we know the consequences if we make a shit design that isn't worth producing? Given we-the-players know we'll license out our new corvette to allies, Arda still will be able to build corvettes, but will our Lord Janitress Lora Isarch get administrative consequences and the like?

Trying to think about it from the Ekkaian perspective, a corvette design right now is only worth it if a) Cimtar won't license theirs or b) if it does something the Soon-To-Be-Gloriously-Named Cimtarn one doesn't. A la versatile gun fighter that can shoot down fighters better or an escort carrier better than our converted design, something else that I can't think of?

Basically if we can abandon a trash frigate upgrade design mid go, or don't suffer much in game from our first try being a bust, might change my vote to Frigate if that's our eventual first real goal.

[X][SCOPE] New Design
[X][SIZE] Cruiser

I don't expect to win but I do want to put this out there.

Having a cruiser design in production as soon as the shipyard is up and running would be a serious boon in my opinion. It would at least make us an unappealing target for raiders and bandits. It would also allow us to acquire more staff during the process which might help improve the whole process before completing it.

[X][SCOPE] Upgrade
[X][SIZE] Corvette

Something quick and easy( relatively speaking) to get our feet wet

[ ][SCOPE] Improve
[ ][SIZE] Death Star

@Jalinth, need QM approval to finalize my change in vote. :thonk:

The real kicker is that improving it simply requires removing the thermal exhaust port. :V

Mostly I want to make a quest about building capital ships. Gunboats are another department. Doing a new gunboat first would be a good idea otherwise.

The crew at the ASDB does not know if Cimtar's corvette is going to be good or if they are actually going to be able to license it. Arda has built some decent ships in the past so working on upgrading the corvette to be built with available components is seen as the easy, safe route. Small risk, small reward.

Given that you have yet to get any instructions you really don't need to worry about the consequences for anything that is up for vote. Even if the work that you do between now and getting orders is garbage it can be written off as training time.

It is possible to scrap an unworkable design. If you had actually been instructed to do something then there would be a loss of reputation. Again, as this first project is being run without direction it can be considered simply lessons learned.

That said there is nothing saying that you can't work on the cruiser until you receive some more specific direction about what you are supposed to be working on. It would certainly save time when the project came around again.
This is meant to indicate that switching tasks is possible.

Makes sense!

This is meant to indicate that switching tasks is possible.
Read this narratively and didn't think of the mechanical implications, doh.

I got too excited about how this quest might affect the other one and using meta-Cimtarn knowledge, rather than treating it as its own thing. Given we-Arda don't have any new ship designs and dk about licensing, a quick corvette upgrade to get the team up to snuff and something to quickly produce when the yards can makes sense to me.

[X][SCOPE] Upgrade
[X][SIZE] Frigate

Corvettes are just going to be a relatively well serviced niche, but the ability to upgrade and update an existing frigate design is effectively unique to Arda throughout the Pact. In order to get the investment in material and personnel we need to be a major shipyard we have to produce something useful. A modern frigate is prestigious, useful, and going to have export buyers lining up.

I'm not worried about people making use of meta-knowledge for this quest. However I am going to limit the amount of information that I give the players that the characters do not have. I'm not going to be strict about it, after all I mentioned the possibility of Ira showing up.

Upgrade will take the plans for an existing Ardan ship so that more can be built. As the present time Arda doesn't HAVE any ships to refit.

You can't just use the existing plans as they require things imported from elsewhere. Using electronics from Kuat and engines from Corellia may have been a good way to save money when the galaxy was more or less unified. Now there is no way to get them shipped to you, if they were even willing to sell. Which you have no idea about because even basic lines of communication have been cut.

[X][SCOPE] Upgrade
[X][SIZE] Frigate

A bit riskier than a corvette, but higher reward cieling/ long term benefit. Only the nominal hostile alliance has frigate building active rn, so id like to get Arda's going with a design while the yards are rebuilt.

If it fails it fails, we will at least learn lessons from it. If it succeeds we will be a in a good position to start production asap as the first frigate producer of our alliance.

I'll be closing the vote in about 10-12 hours, depending on when I get home from some errands. Hopefully the vote won't still be tied then.

If anyone is worried about how much harder an upgrade to a frigate design is compared to a corvette, I will say that both are fine. The frigate will be a bit harder so it will probably take longer but it's doable. Of course going corvette will get the job done faster and hopefully get you more resources for the next project. No real wrong answer here.

Heck, even the cruiser is doable although that one might hit a cut-off time. Hard to say how the dice would play there.

Edit: Note to self - update the character sheet with your staff. I'm not going to do that on my phone.

14 votes, primarily favoring upgrade, but an even split between corvette and frigate. Fascinating.

Here I was thinking there wouldn't be a tie when I was ready to start writing. Silly me.

I asked a friend of mine on discord to break the tie and they voted for Frigate. So I'm going to start working on the options for that. I just had a flu shot and covid booster so it might take a bit before I get the next part up. They often knock me down for a day or two.

Look forward to having a choice between a couple different ships to upgrade.
