Star Trek: Picard

The only summary of my opinions here is a long screeching fangirl noise that sounds almost like an old analogue modem.

I AM SO FUCKING READY FOR THIS.

"Why did you leave Star Fleet, Admiral?"

He wanted to try new things, and for a few years he took a swing at teaching at this school in upstate New York.

I'm somewhat interested in the final product, but honestly, this trailer threw up a few red flags. First I'm so sick of Data being the only character from TNG besides Picard that gets any spotlight. Yes, he was a very well done character played very very well, but he worked best when he was part of a larger cast of characters. As the latter-day movies proved when it's just about him and Picard the story suffers. Secondly, this just doesn't feel like a Star Trek show, it's too action-based. Yes, action Star Trek has worked a few times, but history shows that the safer bet is on it being too dumbed down to have any impact. It just looks like another generic action Sci-Fi show with the Star Trek names bolted on.

Michael Chabon's the showrunner.

I have faith.

...I will also note that the one Voyager character who got an arc is also here.

Troi, Riker and Hugh are also reported as being in the new series as well.

My body is ready.

"This Facility has gone 5843 Days without an Assimilation"

Lol, Rihan, u so silly.

You know, in that old book Federation there's this implication that the Romulans also had cube thrown at them at the same time as BoBW, but they took theirs down by burying it in D'Deridexes, could explain where they've apparently acquired Borg (Derelict Cube!?!?!?) technology to apparently work with enough that they have fucking WorkSafe rules in in place.

(I will still mention that I've always regarded the EU explanation that the Narada was upgraded with SUPER SPESHUL BORG TECH as an explanation for why it clowned on the 23rd Century Federation fleet as total idiocy, because I bet if you put some howitzers and machine guns on a modern freighter, you could probably clown on everyone involved at Trafalgar. It doesn't need special explanation past the two intervening centuries of technological progression.)

Colour me provisionally intrigued, if only because RIHAN.

So's Alex Kurtzman, so... I don't begrudge you your faith but maybe temper it a little?

Call me cautiously optimistic. The glimmers of plot shown in the trailer don't exactly fill me with confidence (Picard leading a Rag-Tag Band against Nebulous Someones to protect Ass-Kicking Waif with a Special Destiny) but at the same time I can see the potential in Picard carrying the Feddy torch with post-Romulus Romulans and refugee Borg. There's at least something interesting and Star Trekky in there, the question is "will they fuck it up?"

Jerri Ryan is also likely the only person they could convince to come back given how everyone else in the cast felt about the show.
And let's be honest, even if this didn't seem to have a borg focus, Seven of Nine is pretty much the only character from DS9 who's return would attract interests besides maybe the Doctor. No one's asking for a Janeway cameo outside of Dragon Age Fans and SF Debris fans.

I didn't want to get Amazon Prime just to watch this but with Seven there, that's real tempting. Might still end up waiting for the whole series to be done then watching it in a trial. Besides I haven't even finished TOS yet on Netflix so I've got stuff to watch until then.

I was pretty hyped before this trailer, because Patrick Stewart is amazing and so is Captain Picard, but now that I see they're even bringing back Seven of Nine, one of the only good parts of Voyager, I am all in.

It would be a novelty to have a good Star Trek show but this honestly depresses me. I want some new characters to like.

I like deconstruction and all that but the carcasses of Voy and Ent have been picked clean. I just want Star Trek to stop dragging its face on the concrete. Especially as the main alternative is Seth fucking MacFarlane.

So, perhaps shedding some context on certain bits of the trailer, CBS had an exhibit from the Starfleet Museum set up at SDCC this year. Take a look at Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty:

I'm...into it? Old Man Picard going on One Last Mission sounds extremely my shit, even if there's almost certainly going to be some dumb bullshit with the Mystery Girl being a secret proto-Borg Queen or something.

Am I the only one thinking that maybe the girl is another android from Data's line instead of being a Borg Queen?

That's...actually not a bad idea? I wouldn't be surprised if Data comes into play in a big way, even if they end up brain uploading him a second time in order to recast the role - I doubt their budget is big enough to cover the CGI needed to keep Spiner looking 20+ years younger, and Spiner himself has (IIRC) said they should recast the role because he's too old for it now.
The trailer seemed to hint at the latter, but it could be a red herring.

What is Dr Soong up to these days?
Decomposing, but his wife is still out there.

My main gripe is the desicion to be canon with Nemesis.

Like... it was kind of a shit movie. I know that Star Trek is expected to be slavish to its adherence to canon because Trekkies, but for gods sake just let Data be alive. In fact, let him be the Data that we see in the future episode where Picard has dementia. That'd be rad as shit. Fuck Nemesis.
