Star Trek: Discovery

In case anyone else outside America was looking forward to watching Discovery in a couple days when it airs they just announced they're pulling it from Netflix everywhere in the world until 2022 whenever they get their own streaming service set up.

This would probably mean something if everyone who wants to watch STD (can't imagine why they would want to, but that's a separate issue) didn't already get Paramount+ aboard using a VPN.

I think Netflix has stopped paying them for the license or maybe had a contract for 3 seasons and isn't renewing it because the viewership isn't doing it.

I think Netflix has stopped paying them for the license or maybe had a contract for 3 seasons and isn't renewing it because the viewership isn't doing it.

I mean, it's possible, but I think it's more likely that this is Paramount wanting to use Star Trek to push Paramount+ and DISCO getting caught in the awkward transition phase.

Paramount has been pretty clear for quite a while that they've been planning to expand Paramount+ internationally and also consolidate Trek under that single service. Until now Netflix has been their main distributor outside the US but now that Paramount+ is ready to expand they're not renewing the license as it comes up. It's one of the reasons why various Trek series and movies have been slowly disappearing from US platforms as well.

"Netflix doesn't want to have it anymore because viewership is bad" is just silly. At most, Netflix isn't wiling to pay what Paramount is demanding for them to keep it longer, which would probably be a pretty high price given their plan to launch Paramount+ with Trek as one of the main draws. Discovery has had enough viewership that Netflix did keep renewing the license previously. It's also had enough success that Paramount has shoveled money into five separate, concurrently-running Trek shows, with Strange New Worlds being a direct spin-off of Discovery. They also have at least two more shows in planning including another spin-off, although that one seems to be in limbo somewhat.

It's basically the equivalent of saying, "Well, Disney claims "The Mandalorian" is successful, but they've only made it available on Disney+ rather than Netflix and only created two live-action spinoffs of it, so does it really have good viewership?" Sure, there's probably some YouTube channel out there claiming exactly that about both Star Wars and Star Trek, but that's just the professional click-baiting haters.

I'm going to get a Paramount+ subscription on the same basis I get Disney+ then - I'll subscribe just long enough to watch the relevant show, then unsubscribe. I'm not paying the lazy tax, which is what all these streamers bank on.

(Paramount+ arrived in Australia a little while ago - I was going to subscribe because I foolishly thought they had Amazing Race US but - surprise! they don't! Useless)

So it looks like in the trailer for the next episode, that species 10-C are going to be completely different to what the Federation think they are.
Also very curious as to where Booker has gone, with Tarka, to launch the isolytic weapon.

I just finished the Season 4 finale and I'm disappointed there hasn't been more discussion. Maybe it's the Ender fan in me but the whole season feels like it has been one of the best Star Trek stories I've seen.

I think this was certainly the best season of Discovery, and certainly the most solid finale. There were a few parts that dragged in the middle of the season, but I think they did a good job of building up the mystery of the DMA and showing how it was impacting societies and people around it. There were a few things that made me roll my eyes a bit - Book kept trusting Tarka way too long - but I liked that they stayed committed to trying to find a peaceful solution. I think there was only one big fight this season and that was Disco and Booker having a cool teleport battle while pulling their punches. The 10-C were visually stunning and a very interesting look at alien modes of thought and communication. I'm not sure how having a language meshes with no individuals, but I think there's enough ambiguity for there to be ways it could work.

Also, the fact that the finale made Ted Cruz cry was great.

Yea I loved this season so much. The fact that the only phaser fire in the finale was a federation ship blowing up an asteroid to protect evacuees was very trek. I think discovery has definitely found its footing.

It's... better, I guess?

Conceptually it seems to have found a more stable footing - the 10-C are a good Star Trek idea if nothing else - but the demands of being a Prestige Drama 10-Hour Movie Maxi-Series[tm] kind of dilute it because they have to take a solid idea for a two-parter or a three-parter and then have to stretch it across ten to twelve episodes. I think if anything it shows that Trek isn't really served well by the modern maxi-series format and would definitely be better off returning to at least a partially episodic format.

But hey, next season we're gonna Restore The Federation! Which is what we were promised in the third season finale! So I look forward to whatever hyperapocalyptic nonsense the writers pull out of their butts so they don't have to write about it!

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to End With Season 5

After resurrecting Trek on TV and launching a new generation of sci-fi content, 'Discovery' will have its final voyage next year.
Sources say principal filming of the season is mostly complete. But with this move to end the show, there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series. The fifth and final season will premiere in early 2024. In addition, Paramount is planning to send the show off in style, with events planned in certain key markets throughout the year leading up to the final season's release. Further details will be released at a later date.

Good, maybe finally, Sexyspacehitler show can go on.

Meh.

Honestly, if they really need to do Section 31, given the recent surge in popularity of Michelle Yeoh, do it as more a movie event. I really don't think it needs an entire series.

I am happy Discovery is ending. It's... not good. Seasons 3 and 4 got better, and there's a few singular good episodes here and there, but by and large it's not good. Let it end.

Refocus those resources into SNW, which has been fantastic, and expand on the world PIC has built. Not the nostalgia fest of PIC... i'm down with that... but it doesn't need to keep going. Just take that world, that era, and do more with it.

It's a shame but I doubt I was gonna keep up with it after moving to Paramount+ so it doesn't change to much for me even if I enjoyed Discovery

New episodes will then drop weekly on Thursdays. The final season will consist of 10 episodes.

Pretty much talking to myself here but after watching the finale, that was fantastic. I'm going to miss the season long Star Trek episode format and I really hope it gets picked up again in the future.
