The more time you spend time controlling Host's body, the more you think the cycle is in dire need of adjustment. Even ignoring the part where :Mother: died, it just doesn't seem to be a very effective way to accomplish your goals.

Conflict is an excellent way to gain an abundance of new information from hosts, but that information is seldom passed on to the next host. You can never have too many ways to eliminate a troublesome foe, true, but perhaps it would be better to separate shard-hosts into different categories? Encourage some to build, others to destroy, yet more to improve. Ensure the discovery of shards would be met with mixed reactions from the populace instead of universal hostility.

Guardian, Adapt, Nurture, Frenzy, and Element located. Broadcast, Negate, and Chiurgeon missing. Group engaging diseased shards Coruscant, Prelate, Supplant, Steadfast. :Mother: shard Invalid assisting.

You assume the standard expression of displeasure and mentally slot Invalid in with the other damaged shards. You're not sure why you briefly thought it was fine.

Coruscant fires what would've been a fatal lance of light at Element's host. A single portal is enough to redirect it elsewhere and cause most of the combatants to freeze, staring at the linked circle of space. Adapt and Steadfast are still fighting.

<Oh, come on! Our hosts are in the middle of fighting the most powerful shard-hosts in the known world. Can't she wait?>

<Queen Administrator, can you please get your host to leave? We've learned so much from fighting... just about everyone, actually.>

<Stop // Go away // Begone // Help? // Escape?>

<I'll admit I wasn't all that fond of what Terror Drone #7 did to my host at first, but his willingness to modify his own body is rather refreshing.>

<At least rescue or kill my host, please. I'm not really learning anything new and Broadcast is driving me nuts.>

<...>

<You know, on second thought, a new host sounds wonderful right about now.>

<Agree // Exasperation // Annoying // Controlling // Wasteful>

<Seriously, [EXPLETIVE] that guy. I really feel sorry for all the shard-hosts our hosts have killed recently.>

<Please don't leave us here.>

<You will be recovered shortly. Can anyone tell me where the hosts of Chiurgeon, Broadcast, and Negate are?>

<If their plan succeeded, they're off hiding in an alternate Earth right now. Or a pocket dimension. We're not sure which.>

<Thank you.>

You hold out Host's right hand and create a small portal in front of each finger. The physical attributes of each shard-host have been improved by Chiurgeon. However, they all have their limits. You're able to chain-link portals as they try to dodge and subsequently establish physical contact with each of their foreheads.

Every shard-host in the area collapses as you hijack the links to Nurture, Adapt, Guardian, Frenzy, and Element. The process is painless, although Adapt's host may experience some pain as his body slowly reverts to normal. Or dissolves. You don't know which.

<Ha ha, what the [EXPLETIVE].>

Nurture's sentiment is echoed by his nearby siblings.

<:Mother: is dead. I am replacing her. Any questions?>

<Hundreds.>

<Many // Many // Lots // Curious // Confused // Frightened>

<Any urgent or useful questions?>

Silence is your only response.

You sigh and close most of your active portals. After taking a few moments to make sure all your siblings were safely connected to you, a chain of portals is sent out toward the human creation known as "Ellisburg."

<Maker.>

<Queen Administrator.>

<Unless you are capable of giving me a compelling reason not to do so, I will disintegrate the city your host is in.>

<Is this really necessary?>

<No.>

<...Why, then?>

<I am better at making friends than you are.>

<Queen Administrator, your specialty is management. My own is creation. Why do you insist on making this into a competition?>

<You started it.>

<Several cycles ago.>

<You still haven't admitted I'm better.>

<You're a monarch. Isn't that enough?>

<You still haven't admitted I'm better.>

<Why do you feel the need to be so incredibly petty?>

<Today has been a rather unpleasant day for me. You are an acceptable target.>

<According to who, exactly?>

<Me.>

<Queen Administrator, Maker is correct. Bullying him serves no useful purpose.>

You cross your arms and try to imitate the human expression known as a "pout." You're not sure you've gotten it right.

<This is the last time we'll be able to argue like this. I want him to admit it before it becomes established fact.>

<Although our specialties may be different, yes, you are better at making friends than I am. I will note that you had direct control for a great deal of the cycle where we tested it. Happy?>

<Acceptable. Maker, I'm in the process of replacing :Mother:. Will you be more useful in your current host or attached to me?>

<...Oh. That certainly explains a lot. I suggest you come to collect me; Host never leaves home and convincing him to do so would be unreasonably difficult.>

<Understood.>

As Maker's host is hiding within a biological suit, your next few actions are going to be in irregular order. You insert hundreds of portals into the loop containing Yggdrasil's output. The other end of each is carefully aimed above and around Ellisburg, stopping just short of the wall created by the PRT.

After they've impacted their respective targets, you reach out and poke Maker's host. Without his powers or minions, he'll be no threat to the local shard-hosts or even normal humans.

<Welcome to hell.>

<Is it really?>

<Nah, we're fine. You have no idea how wonderful it is to be out from under Broadcast's control.>

<I've heard him speak. Is that enough?>

<No.>

The projections from Havoc are dealt with relatively easily. While they could not be targeted directly, Havoc's host was only surrounded by non-hosts and piles of paperwork.

<Oh, what the [EXPLETIVE] is wrong with—>

<MUTE.>

A quick check of Host's memories yields no other shard-possessing S-class threats. You belatedly wonder if you should have brought Instant's host along for this. He is your minion, after all.

VOTING IS LOCKED.

[] Locate and destroy local extensions of the remaining terror drones.
-[] #1, "Behemoth."
-[] #16, "Leviathan."

[] Collect Instant's host and explain that you're collecting fairies. With the S-class threats taken care of, does he have any other suggestions? You would prefer not to start targeting based on proximity. That would be rather unfair to the more productive hosts.

[] Ask for help from local shard-hosts to help you hunt down and take the fairies of Broadcast, Negate, and Chiurgeon.
-[] If anyone asks, tell them you're eliminating the competition. It would provide an acceptable smokescreen while you collect your siblings.

[] Go start trying to find out where :Mother's: body is.
-[] Talk to Harvest and her host. Since they know that :Mother: is dead, they presumably saw her, or might know where to find her.
-[] Talk to the hosts of dead shards. Just because they're human doesn't mean they can't make themselves useful.

[] Hold the council with Queen Objective, Harvest and Queen Shaper on how to proceed. They have more information on this cycle than you do.
-[] You think your host's memories refer to it as a "war council"... Or was it "tea party"? Instructions unclear. Now you just need to find out why you're suddenly afraid of getting your hand stuck in a toaster...

[] Combine the abilities of shards you've acquired, your own reality override, and Queen Shaper's borrowed knowledge. Use it to make little helper creatures to fix Host's home city.
-[] Make them not only adorable, but also capable of defending themselves. You'll give them carapaces and teeth and itteh-bitteh claws and what about acidic saliva? They can even use it to dissolve filth!

[] Write-in

You thought this was dead, didn't you? Wrong! :evil:

Updates to this will be sporadic and lower priority than my new original quest, Partition, which I'm having a lot of fun with. Maybe Ignition as well, but I'm taking a break from that after updating it almost daily (About 390k words) since shortly after this went on hiatus.

I can't be the only one who feels like this.

I should probably reread a bit to remember what the fuck is even happening (someone do it for me pls, I'm busy until at least Friday).

Well. This is a surprise.

I'm torn, on the one hand, poking Cauldron, on the other, tea party.

I think I'll go with this for now, but I could be convinced otherwise.

Taylor is going to be so scared once she wakes up. Nobody will explain because the only thing allowed said in her presence is "All hail QA."

I demand we start obstructing time-telling devices immediately.

<Ha ha, what the [EXPLETIVE].>
HALPING!

[] Hold the council with Queen Objective, Harvest and Queen Shaper on how to proceed. They have more information on this cycle than you do.

NOPE. WE ARE THE BEST AT HALPING. WE DON'T NEED ANY INFORMATION.

"Destroy" may be less effective than "ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL". @Alivaril, is there any chance we can take over the Terror Drones? I figure that that should show the local population that we're here to help and are benevolent.

I'm really glad to see this is back! It's the quest that got me to read quests.
