Spider-Man (PS4)

I've been playing it and it really is good. Not without weaknesses, but it has a lot of humanising material in it that, combined with the really enjoyable 'you are spider-man' gameplay really sells me on the character in a way that a lot previous material has not.

I'm considering buying it, particularly to give my PS4 a raison-d'etre.

This is the only open-world game where I actually enjoyed going around and unlocking the map segments. I love how it's basically just a twenty minutes long side mission.

I do like the camera options they give you, from the framing to the wide range of filters.

(Side Note: I very nearly died several times getting that particular shot. In retrospect, I probably could have used the immune to bullets suit power, but it kind of slipped my mind. Still, those criminals were quite happy to provide me with my laser light show. It was very nice of them.)

Wow, after all these years have they finally created a worthy successor to the Spider-Man 2 game? Gotta check this out.

There should be a giant Memorial in this game to commemorate all the Spiderman games that have died trying to achieve the same feat.

This game was thoroughly excellent. The gameplay was fun and the story was fairly moving.

Like Ford, I think that it beats any of the previous Spider-Man games or movies I've seen. Highly recommended.

Having seen all Spoderman movies and played many Spoderman games I can happily concur that this is some of the best Spoderman content that's ever Spodermanned.

Albeit still not flawless. Sable's pretty much the biggest misstep in the game tbh. They serve no purpose other than to constantly get clowned on and take Ls, Silver Sable herself lands in downright Strong Female Character territory as she occasionally rappels into a scene to look tough holding two pistols and maybe throwing out a spinkick but otherwise accomplishing absolutely nothing of note, and this makes the third Spoderman game in a decade that I've played that has power-armoured space marines show up and enact martial law in Manhattan. Granted they were the good guys trying to save the world from symbiotes in Web of Shadows but still, could we give it a rest with the space marines in Spoderman? These weird sci-fi assholes rolling into the Big Apple with laser-batons and laser-bolas and laser-grenades and jetpacks honestly kind of break the tone too. And the stealth sections were real :thonk: additions, while they do branch a bit with the tools given to you I think they needed a lot more expansion to be more than unwelcome diversions from the core gameplay of swinging and punching and thwipping.

Still though, I could probably gush for a really long time about the things I did like about it, but that'd be pretty heavily in spoiler territory. Suffice to say I think the game kicks its ass into gear hard around the third act and the ending genuinely got to me. It came down to a single line that made me say out loud "oh fuck" but I choked up in the middle so it came out more like "oh f-uhk". Heartily recommended to anyone with a PS4.

It really makes you feel like Spoderman

That was fucking incredible.

Jesus christ the third act.

Jesus christ the ending.

Also the New Villain needs a catchy title he is 100% showing up in future titles, calling it now, and Mister Lee just won't cut it.

Loved the credits clip and the characterization and jesus christ everything. Even just, like, side missions tracking down random villains or pidgeons or whatever.

Gotta say this though, the game does a fantastic job of taking Mister Negative from a Literally Who? caliber villain to likely a permanent A Lister overnight.

Like... three days until the first Chapter of the City that Never Sleeps drops, right?

I remember thinking when I first started:

"Man I thought there would be more super villains in this game."

The the third act started and gave me everything I wanted.

The heist DLC was pretty good, defintiively the first part of a larger story (the fact they labbed it "the city that never sleep" rather than season pass, make me think if it sells pretty well they might try to do more DLC pack in the future since a sequel would probably have to wait for the PS5 era)

Kinda wish it was about pulling a heist instead of Spider-man being tricked into one

So finished up playing the game and it's certainly the best Spider-Man game I've played. The writing is super solid and there's enough stuff to make the game feel huge. That said there are a few major issues. For one stealth is totally pointless. If the game is going to spawn in a bunch of enemies pre-alerted just after you finish taking out the rest of the gang don't fucking bother with stealth. It barely puts a dent in their numbers and wastes time. For that matter, the wave-based HQ attacks are just a pain in the ass and if it wasn't for unlocking new costumes I'd have no reason to do them. Lastly when in the hell did MJ become Lois Lane? I know they needed some thin reason to justify her mandatory stealth sections so she'd be involved in the story, but it makes no fucking sense with her history. She's never been a reporter. Mary Jane's a model and sometimes an actress. If they wanted someone to use for the stealth sections why not Black Cat, she at least has both the skill set and a reason for helping. Hell if they wanted to save her for DLC how about Betty Brant, who is both Peter's girlfriend and a reporter? How about Yuri, she's both a cop and thus has the ability to go to dangerous places and is tied to Spider-Man? Why Mary Jane?
