Oh yeah. This is gonna be good.

At the very least I'm looking forward to seeing the Andromeda.

Will they do a better job extending the narrative of Yamato than the original series? Because '.... And then someone else appeared to blow up but the characters had nowhere else to go for six movies' wasn't great. At least all the political groups and main figures are much more involved and compelling in 2199.

I have no doubt they will. For one there's a bunch more plot things that can happen with the still-functioning Gamilas Empire that probably has amicable relations with Earth, or at the very least the Yamato. They're also bringing elements from the other series, so I'm pretty sure there's going to be a lot of things they can do.

It will depend a lot on the specific staff they assign to the project. I would imagine that they'd aim to get the same team together, and they had originally planned to have an additional two cours.

Nope, wasn't aware there was one. How much does it cover?
It takes place between episodes 24 and 25. It features the villains to be seen in the second season, Gatlantis, as well as ties up some loose ends from the Rainbow Star Cluster Battle. It's called Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark.

It's really damn good.

Both the first season and the film were a real treat, so I'm very excited about what the next few cours will bring.

Also Comet Empire FTW
I wonder how they're going to have the Comet Empire be a legitimate threat.

Given how the movie and one Season One episode established that their tech is vastly inferior to Gamilon tech, and their ships are about 20 times squishier.

What?

They give a pretty decent accounting of themselves in the movie, and the Gamilons trade about evenly with them ship for ship. As to that battle in season one, of course they get the stuffing kicked out of them. They were fighting Domel.

Nah, the Gatlanteans establish themselves to be a pretty big fucking threat. Hell, the opening of the movie shows them absolutely wrecking a Gamilon fleet that included a Zoelguut-class dreadnought, one of the few ships that could trade blow for blow with the Yamato. And while their ships were being destroyed in the movie's climax, keep in mind they were fighting the Yamato and a Gelvades-class battlecarrier, the former capable of taking on entire fleets and winning and the latter commanding a rather respectable amount of dakka, with only cruisers and destroyers. The Gatlanteans still haven't shown their main battleships and heavier carriers. I also wouldn't use their season 1 performance against them, considering they were fighting Domel, the man who, if not due to plot, would have ended the Yamato in their first encounter.

Anyway, here's a fanmade trailer for season 2. It features some interesting theories about what could happen. You'll need a nicovideo account to view it.

Man, I really need to get around to watching the movie.

Maybe, but most of the smaller Gamilon ships die to single shots anyways.
Whereas in that one episode, a shot from a Gatlantean Cruiser's main gun hit a Gamilon Cruiser and the damage merely made it fall out of formation.

Shots from the Gamilon fleet made the Gatlantean ships explode like tinder.

The Flame Strike Gun is a formidable weapon on par with the Wave Motion Gun in terms of destructiveness, but everything else seems rather inferior. Sure, they can give a good accounting of themselves, but well, it seems like Gatlantean survivability is really low. Maybe that's just because of lack of plot armor, but yeah.

I just want to see the Andromeda. That will make it all worth it.

I'm reasonably sure that damage sufficient to induce a total loss of control, however momentary, cannot be described as 'mere'. :V

Anyway, we know that they were challenging the Gamilons to such a degree that Domel's campaign had lasted some time against them prior to his recall to Baleras, and that his efforts whilst in charge of the theatre were anything but conclusive.

We'll just have to see how they do, but based on their performance so far they're hardly pushovers.

Well, compared to other times when it seems like any sort of damage causes the ship to detonate like it was filled with firecrackers, getting mission-killed is "mere".

They aren't pushovers, yeah, but on a one-to-one basis, their survivability isn't great, and their accuracy seems horrendous. They seem to substitute quality with quantity.

Fortunately for them, war isn't generally a one-on-one affair :p. We'll see if they can play the numbers game better than the Gamilons.

I mean obviously they won't be able to but it'll be fun to watch them try lol

Does any ship other than the Yamato have Wave Motion Shields at all? Just wondering, because if so, I can't see the Comet Empire even scratching the future Cosmo Navy.

Alright, finished the movie. It was pretty good, I will admit. Hype for season 2 has been restored.

No, no other human vessel has a Wave Motion Generator or associated Wave Motion technologies at the time of the Yamato's return to Earth.

If they can mass produce vessels on a par with or approaching the Yamato in terms of capability, that'd be something. Very big if, though, given Earth's rather parlous condition.
