Souls of Beyond, Returned to Protect (Kantai Collection)

USS Zumwalt
Pearl Harbor (During the battleship raid)

Andrew looked at the battleships and heavy cruisers and said "Alpha Strike the Tomahawks. Hot Launch" All of the VLS tubes in the back of the ships opened and the missiles ignited in the tubes and flew out covering the entire ship in smoke making it vanish. The missiles went to the other ships and hitting the ships and exploding. The captain smirked looking at the explosions on the ships.

(After the battle)

Andrew turned on the intercom and said "Attention, Helicopter Crews you are now able to commence search and rescue operations but use caution at this time." Two SH-60 helicopters were brought to deck helipad and flew off looking for survivors of the attack. "Good work everyone." he said over the comms taking the time to wipe the sweat from his brow and come down from the adrenaline rush in his system. He just stayed in captains chair waiting for more enemies or the all clear signal from the higher ups.

As I look upon the destroyed and sinking Abyssals, I feel...absolutely nothing. Previously I did feel some slight joy at taking them down, fear at being in battle, blood-lust at being in battle, satisfaction on a job well done...but not anymore. Because this is my life now, isn't it? Once again I had been running from the truth, just as I had the entirety of my previous life before I decided not to run anymore and waste everyone's time. At least I only 'ran'...how long did the battle last? Half an hour? An hour? Two? I don't remember. And its not really my job to, is it?

I'm an amalgamation of the souls of the Montana-class Battleships that never were and my own wretched and pathetic one from my previous 'life'. A mass of nothing and never was, rightfully cast aside in the face of the ever shifting nature of warfare, lead by a soul and person less than nothing, the basest of the base, even less that the dirt you scrape off your shoes subconsciously, a tiny minuscule blight upon the human collective. 'God made man and Colt made them equal.' It wasn't a colt I used, but the meaning remained the same. For those nanoseconds in which I pulled the trigger and that piece of metal flew from the gun's barrel into my brain, I was equal to other human beings. For in that moment I was finally doing the right thing and achieving the most in life I would ever achieve.

As Saratoga and the Captain of the Zumwalt's comms came in, I dryly replied, "Yes. We did our duty." As I silently sailed away to the largest collection of kanmusu, which would be our carrier group, I finally divined the intention of whatever higher power sent me here. At first I had objected, I didn't want a second chance, I didn't want to live. But now I realize I had it wrong. This wasn't a second chance. This was my purgatory. The form I was in was nothing more than one more suited to the task at hand. At the end of the day I was still just a weapon - an and outdated piece of scrap fighting a war that had long left my kind behind - and my goal was to kill until I was killed. So be it, such a hollow existence was nothing more than I deserved. I would serve, because that is all I can do. Because that is what I was made to do. I am not alive. I do not live to serve.

I merely serve.

As my aircraft continue to do their thing, I think back to recent events.

As Saratoga and the Captain of the Zumwalt's comms came in, I dryly replied, "Yes. We did our duty."

Well, that's true, but the tone sounded... calm? Resigned? At least that's the impression I get.

We did do good work, but...

All those relatively large missiles... there were more than fifty of them, all aimed at the battleship group arrayed before us. My planes had to dodge so as not to get caught in all the big, blinding, brilliant blasts. My god... but I find that to be wasteful. So many missiles on a few targets... the captain could have locked on to each Abyssal destroyer and heavy cruiser here, with two or three missiles each, and most, if not all of them, would have been heavily damaged, if not sunk outright. None of them possess the weapons to intercept small, high-speed projectiles such as missiles. Besides, we had the battleship group handled already.

But if that is true, then how did those Abyssals, possessing inferior capabilities, sink all those modern ships? They were most likely Arleigh Burkes, which have plenty of missiles too...

...

I turn to my sister to give voice to my thoughts. "Come to think of it, why use so many of those guided rockets on the battleship group? They could have taken down all the destroyers and cruisers here with two or three each."

I refer to them as guided rockets, not missiles, because while I would know of them, Sara would not. There were no missiles during the war, other than a few exceptions, but there were rockets, and missiles could be described as guided rockets.

I make my response. "Sara to Cypher, I'll reroute half a squadron, over."
With my plane launched i notice my attention split to have a focus on the plane without detriment to my overall sight leaving me with a strange dual view of the world "is dis what da carriers views are like?" I muse to myself while lighting another cigarette as sara planes form some type of CAP to escort my Seagull, when they are in formation I open a line to Sara and raspily speak my tone now fully displaying how tired I was.

"Cypher ta Sara, much obliged fer da escort, as ya can probably see mah seagull ain't da fastest or toughest bird in da sky, but enough about dat let's go lead back our new friend fore she decides ta get up and more lost somehow, over", with that said I put more focus on my seagull nudging it ever so slightly when it looked to be off course only ending the nudging as it came in view of Radiance allowing the mad fairy inside to perform it's work of signalling Radiance to follow it and its escort.

Through all this, I can't help but softly smile at the sight of Lex and Princeton beside me. Overall, we did well today.

"We make a great team," I comment to the two of them.

"We do make a great team!" I exclaim loudly. "If we get some practice in just imagine what we could do together!" I begin making landing preparations for my aircraft. I feel the loss of 1 more Avenger and 2 Hellcats. Luckily these pilots made it back ok

"Come to think of it, why use so many of those guided rockets on the battleship group? They could have taken down all the destroyers and cruisers here with two or three each."

"It's probable there is something to it. So many rockets could easily have finished off a larger force. maybe because the targets are small they don't want to miss? Or whatever brings us and them back provides some sort of resistance? Whatever it is we should investigate, especially if we plan on using modern rockets." Wouldn't want to take the time to upgrade our weapons only to find the old stuff worked better.

I nod in agreement. I'm pretty much running on instincts and prior knowledge here, some actual practice could only do me good. I doubt all the Abyssals would be this easy to defeat.

"I don't really know sister. Maybe the captain was just really angry at the abyssals. I mean, they just sunk his whole fleet...."
"Well, I guess, but wouldn't he want to take as many Abyssals as he can? And if one ship has all those, how did an entire fleet get sunk?"

"It's probable there is something to it. So many rockets could easily have finished off a larger force. maybe because the targets are small they don't want to miss? Wouldn't want to take the time to upgrade our weapons only to find the old stuff worked better.

"Maybe, but they seemed too accurate to miss," I remark. They looked like cruise missiles, with little wings and fins. Those things have amazing precision. If I remember right, they can go through open windows without hitting them.

She had a point about resistance and taking a look at that, though.

"Cypher ta Sara, much obliged fer da escort, as ya can probably see mah seagull ain't da fastest or toughest bird in da sky, but enough about dat let's go lead back our new friend fore she decides ta get up and more lost somehow, over"

"Sara to Cypher, sure thing, over," I reply. It took a bit of a while to understand what she was saying. Maybe it's the accent?

WAIT! I'M NOT READY FOR THI-

Everything faded to black. I couldn't see nor hear. And so I fell into a deep slumber, one eternal and peaceful. NOT.

I hoped for something more peaceful, yet I couldn't despite literally everything. I was alive one moment, carefree and jolly as a girl could be in a small peaceful town which lay idle on the laziest of days filled with calm, excitable and busy on the busiest of days.

Yet, these thoughts invaded my mind. Just what that voice meant by becoming a ship's soul?

I pondered for seconds, minutes, hours and even quite possibly, days of just what the voice could have in store.

Then, I see a light, one almost blinding, yet at the same time, its not. I could hear voices, desperate and almost void of hope, calling for me, begging at me to save them.

'I... I can't believe it. It... its just not what I'm supposed to do! I'm sorry!', Was what I thought.

But then, something showed me. It revealed to me what cruel fate shall befall upon mankind. Monsters, filthy mockeries of what had once been noble ships sailed through oceans dyed red with blood, their hideous forms, menacing and unspeakable, screamed evil.

It showed me what it could do, ravaged cities, sunken ships both civilian and military filled the seafloor.

That... That there was the last straw.

I heard once again the desperate cries of help. I heard my people's, my nation's and my duty. And so, I answer.

My nine fighters take up positions around the distinctive biplane, which is moving at one-third their speed. However, it's not a straightforward escort where they group up nearby like bodyguards and match the speed of the Very Important Plane, which my pilots say is a Seagull. It's instead a smaller version of a CAP, where they fly about the surrounding area and screen the seaplane from threats, both from below and from above. It's more flexible that way for my aircraft, and it lets them spot and/or remove enemies before they can reach the VIP.

Eventually, they encounter the Radiance, and... well, the crimsonette, clad in red, reminds me of Kyouko Sakura. Her rigging, however, it's the same as that autoloading heavy cruiser's! She's a sister of the other one.

I call her up on the radio. "Sara to Radiance, my fighters have arrived. How did you end up here? Over."

Meanwhile, in another location, a flotilla of four Abyssal destroyers looks on as a wave of twenty Hellcats and seventeen Avengers approaches them...

"For fucks sake Prince of Wales, I'm not even a Imperial Japanese Ship... I'm a Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force Ship... If you want to escape, you'll do well not to fire on the planes that are bailing you out of the situation you got yourself into." I say, my eye twitching heavily. I direct my fighters to strafe the abyssal destroyers, with my wyverns coming in to deal a finishing blow on them. My other Wyverns deal with one of the enemy battleships near Prince of Wales. Hopefully that stubborn battleship will realize we're all on the same dammed side soon....

"Japanese... Maritime.... Self Defense Force? What sort of Hitler appeasing bullshit is that?" I asked angrily. A piff of four inch guns firing drew my attention away from the comms and towards the destroyers still chasing me. One was falling behind the other, obviously foundering from damage sustained. I glared at the one who had the gall to shoot at me, the one that was still moving. That one wasn't going to live the thirty seconds it would take to reload.

My fore turrets switched target from the sinking dreadnought onto the doomed destroyer, and fired as one. The four shells streaked through the air, and landed in a pattern around the destroyer. Except for the shell that gutted it stem to stern.

A small grimace flashed over my face as I watched the destroyer sink. That ship might have once carried the hopes and dreams of young men, only to be corrupted by these Abyssals, and forced to fight again.

It was a cruel fate.

My 6 fighters over pearl I realize haven't really done anything but fly around the whole battle, and with the Carriers gone are highly unlikely to actually get any action the rest of the battle. A few of the pilots are pretty salty about this, but seem to understand that pearl easily could have been attacked by air if they weren't there. Still doesn't make them any more happy when I give them orders to come back and land. Meanwhile my cap of 11 fighters along with 13 Hellcats with Torpedoes and 10 avengers begin swarming the retreating Abyssals destroyers.

A while later I finally rendezvous with Cypher and Sara. Sara is a brunette aircraft carrier and Cypher is a black haired... wolf girl? Wierd, but not much more than dying and coming back as the female personification of a heavy cruiser. Seeing the pair stare at me, I give a smile and big wave as I approach, silently happy that I didn't run into any enemies along the way. I may have all these fancy guns, but even when I was a boat I was never in any real ship to ship battles, the most I had done was escorting against torpedo boats and shell landbased targets... Hopefully, they had some sort of target range or training facilities to help with that.

Quickly snapping myself out of it to avoid acting on this impulses with a stranger I decide to greet this ship. "Hi, I'm USS Princeton! Nice to meet you!"

I notice the Seagull approaching... the wolf faunus. So she is Cypher, then? On another note, is it just me, or am I seeing a waving tail right now? While it is cute, it's also not something I see everyday. But then, I'm seeing a lot of those not-everyday things recently. Even myself.

A Des Moines? So that's why her sister's 8-inch guns can fire so quickly. They are autoloaded! But aren't those American ships? Why is her prefix HMAS, whatever it is, not USS, for United States Ship?

"Yeah, we did. There were plenty of Abyssals here... by the way, what does HMAS stand for?"

At Yokosuka, Early Morning:
Abyssal forces are starting to buckle, their blockade nearly broken through. The Four (Three Active) battleships are preparing to shell the enemy into submission, while JS Kurama and JS Shinano prepare their third wave of aircraft, hoping to utterly crush the enemy command structure. Meanwhile, Prince of Wales is about to receive a disturbing transmission.......

"ALRIGHT ALL OF YOU!" Someone's voice. Mine. "Battleships, ON ME. Carriers, stay here and launch bombers! Destroyers, TO ME!" I look at the assembled girls. So few, and our enemies are so numerous. No time for anything fancy, only time to assemble a battle line. Three destroyers and two battleships, with a third already engaging.

"Girls, I woke up about ten minutes ago. I have no idea why I'm here, or what's going on. What I do know is that there's an enemy at our door. We have only one choice- to fight."
Grim looks on ashen faces. It seems everyone here is as confused as I am. I relay the plan.

I fire a salvo from my cannon. Everything stops. These... monsters know we will fight. I WILL TEACH THEM TO FEAR.

"No one's gonna die here today, girls. I'd sooner rip my heart out than let one of you fall. Now, let's make our enemies BLEED."
I'm confused about this new ship that randomly started spewing out orders. I turn to Fir and give her a confused look, in return she gives me a confident smile and moves in front of the ship. Well, okay then. I join her in forming a line in front of our battleships. Giving me another smile, Fir points her 120mm cannons at a group of Abyssal destroyers, firing then in tandem continuously instead of all at once she fills the sky with shell after shell, all raining down on the escorts.

Not wanting to disappoint I attempt to repeat her attack on a different group of enemy destroyers. My endeavour fails, when I fire my guns all at once, all the trajectories get calculated at once, using the same formulae, making it much simpler for my brain to handle; this time it's calculation after calculation, continuous and completely different formulae fill my mind as each gun fires under different conditions, almost every second my data on wind speeds, underwater currents and various other things is updated. The sheer amount of numbers filling my head is too much after only a few seconds of firing, I quickly give up on my strategy and go back to firing all my guns at once with a short break between bursts. Fir shoots me an odd look at my inefficient shooting but quickly goes back to thinning out the destroyers.

Ears twitching as they faintly picked up Sara's whispered words I do nothing to indicate I had heard aside from whispering to myself in contemplation "looks like somethin' is eatin' Sara, but is it mah place ta ask what it is like ah did my little ones or should ah leave it be since it's obviously somethin' she doesn't want others ta hear judging by the whisperin'", before I can make a decision one way or the other I receive a fleet wide message from the admiral.
"This is Pearl Harbor, to all ships. Could we get a report on the current situation?"
"A status report? Ah guess ah should report in mahself" taking a quick drag on my cigarette I wait for Sara to finish her report before opening a channel to the admiral and quickly rasping, "This is Cypher ta Pearl, been escorting da carriers as ordered took out quite a few planes that dared ta try and harm da carriers and got through the carrier's CAP, ah'm continuing mah escort duties til da rest of these stragglin' ships are mopped up, over" my report given I take a look at the darkening sky a smirk upon my face as my favored time approached my fairies moving about with renewed vigor, though oddly the pilot fairy stayed on my head perhaps it was bored.
"Hi, I'm USS Princeton! Nice to meet you!"
With a start I turn to face the owner of the unexpected greeting, upon completing my abrupt turn I behold a rather exuberant but tired blonde that seemed to put off an air that made me want to give her a hug. Ignoring the complaints of my designated head fairy I rasp carefully to lessen my accent "Well hello there Princeton it's nice ta meet ya too, I'm USS Cypher third of the St.Louis class of light cruisers, you look tired though I imagine we all do normally I'd probably offer you a seat but as you can see there's nothing to sit on but water"

USS Newport News
Pearl Harbor

The attack on the collection of Abyssal battleships was fairly uneventful for USS Newport News. Her eight-inch guns weren't capable of punching through battleship belt armor, so she spent most of her time trying to score hits against their deck armor from afar and blowing up the occasional screening ship that got close enough to them. Having no experience with her naval guns before today, the anthropomorphized heavy cruiser wasn't terribly accurate with the guns, but that was more than made up for by the autoloading guns' ludicrous rate of fire.

After the last battleship was destroyed by cruise missiles, she, Khatun, and the two destroyers began heading back towards the main group.

"USS Newport News here, any plans for the remaining ships?"

"This is Pearl Harbor, to all ships. Could we get a report on the current situation?"
"USS Newport News here, enemy battleships down, regrouping with main force to help stamp out the rest."

Reaching the port, she noticed that a new shipgirl was summoned. Newport News wasn't quite sure who the newcomer was, but the new girl seemed oddly familiar, and she was getting a migraine as memories she knew weren't hers tried to make themselves known.

"Do I know you?"

Time:???

I awoke to the scent of burning oil and cooked flesh. God that was unsettling. I rubbed my eyes, the blurry world slowly turning clear to me.

I stood up from where I lay, my legs wobbling a bit from disuse. My eyes gazed around in whatever god forsaken place I could be and what I saw... it enraged me.

I looked over to the mighty battleship Missouri, her hull a burning wreck as flames devoured her up. My eyes couldn't help but release tears. W-why? I... It... Why does it feel like I lost a sister?

I continue to stare at the remains of my sister when I caught a glimpse of what seemed to be a building (or what's left of it anyways), its ruins and debris having fallen on a ship. USS Arizona's hull. Ari's hull. Desecrated.

I didn't know what came over me as a surge of emotions overwhelmed my senses. Sorrow, anger... its what I felt. Seeing Pearl Harbor, a land which I had once called home being destroyed was too much.

Over yonder I saw... things. They looked like ships, no, they were mockeries of the ships they took form. Their jagged black, monstrosity of a ship, their smoke stacks spewing out black smoke, their old guns staring at me in a menacing manner.

Righteous anger filled my chest. Strange mechanical things attached themselves to my side, their turrets housing miniatures of 16 inch guns. The guns aimed at the mostrosities, waiting for my command.

"This is Pearl Harbor, to all ships. Could we get a report on the current situation?"

This random voice made itself heard, static and almost faint.

My guns trained at the cruiser, a shell marked for each one.

I answer the voice with my own:
"This is USS Iowa, BB-61. Engaging Targets."

The boom of furious 16 inch guns was all that was heard.

Along the way home to reload, one of the fighters in my Abyssal hunting force could see muzzle blasts that could only come from 406mm guns, like a Montana's or Iowa's. However, the source is too far away for me to clearly tell who she is.

Tiny gauntleted heavy cruisers could be seen from here, too, four of them, it looks like, near the source of the gunfire, but there is smoke trailing from them. They must be the damaged ones from the carrier raid earlier today. They're the only non-destroyers left among the Abyssals here.

An explosion rings out from one of them. Whoever the gunner is, she's got things well under control.

My aircraft continue on their return trip.
