Sorcerer Itinerant (A Mage Errant Quest)

Should tie-breakers be determined via dice rolls or waiting for additional posts?

I suppose with the general consensus being 'Winding' as the more fun option, I shall switch your affinity over to that. Congratulations, you are now going to confuse every enemy you meet. And yes, the wind would be picking up the rope.

Everyone is free to edit their votes now that 'Wind' is 'Winding. Or, to make it more understandable, 'Spiral'. I think 'Spiral' will be a good name for it. The post has been edited to use the word [Spiral] instead so please edit your posts.
Not really keen on winning options changing after the vote is closed. It was plenty clear that 'Wind' meant the weather aspect.

Your Right! It is absolutely imperative to ensure that the will of the voters is taken into account. It is them that the quest thrives, and it is the voters who win who should be consulted before all else. In the highly unlikely event of ambivalence or them preferring an alternative take on their vote, it should be them that were consulted before all else. If it wasn't for them, the change would never have taken place. A mild, I'd prefer x would have been enough. It's them the winners who have the real say in how the vote is resolved, alongside the QM.

That Said, I apologize. I realize my interaction and hyper fixation on a personally interesting facet, caused you discomfort, as I became mildly obsessed with it. I also realize it was me who through the oddity of a lacking definition on the site I was using that caused Winding to ever be brought up in the first place.

I voted for Wind Affinity because it sounded like it could let us create some interesting movement powers, but I am not at all upset about switching to Spiral Affinity because I feel like it leads to a much more unique powerset and character that takes leans into the flexibility of magic Affinities in Mage Errant much better. I took about 10-15 seconds to decide to vote for Wind, and have spent much more time than that getting excited about Spiral.

It is normally important for a QM to respect voters choices, and how they shape the character and story, but the purpose of character creation is to end up with a character the players want to play and the QM wants to write. I generally don't think character creation at the start of a quest is a good idea because it forces the most impactful decisions when I am least invested in the character, and occurs when the quest has the smallest audience, so those who join a quest later don't feel like they had a chance to influence that important decision.

Adhoc vote count started by Donk on Jan 29, 2024 at 2:33 PM, finished with 35 posts and 7 votes.

Voting is now closed. Spiral/Wind received 5 votes for 3d6, 1 vote for 2d6, and 1 for 1d6. Frost received 3 votes for 1d6, 3 votes for 2d6, and 1 vote for 3d6. Sight received 3 votes for 2d6, 3 votes for 1d6, and 1 vote for 3d6.

Spiral is now the highest score. Second to follow will be rolled for as ironically both are tied on two scores. On a d2 the 1 will be Frost, and 2 will be Sight. It seems you're all good at seeing. Sight will hold the second positon, and Frost will be your weakest affinity.

As for the name, it's once again a tie between two. As the first name is the same, I'll be rolling for last name. 1 = Genome, 2 = Neko. Nya it is. I'll be posting next sometime this evening.

Not really keen on winning options changing after the vote is closed. It was plenty clear that 'Wind' meant the weather aspect.

Apologies. I'll try not to do such things in the future, but as people said this is character creation so it's a special time. If Spiral proves to be an unwanted affinity it can be changed in the future, but as it stands people do like the idea of 'haha drill go brr'.

I'm not sure this idea is possible but... Frostwork Golem. Use Winding to power a Golem made of Frost. Providing it senses through our Sight Affinity.

"Nia Neko, sir!" You reply, bowing to the man. He nods, pencil-thin mustache quivering in amusement at your formality.

"Right. Take a spot in the group, we'll be starting soon. Follow the herd, as it were." Turning his attention back to the situation at hand, the official calls out to another approaching student, quickly moving to meet them.

Finding yourself in the crowd, you run your eyes along the groups of people. Most are idly waiting, but some are chatting and having minor discussions. Eyes pass over you, the affinity causing minor pings every time someone takes notice. Then again, you do stand out a fair bit. After all, you've got...

[] [Appearance] - A refined appearance. You take good care of your hair and face, applying whatever cosmetics you can get your hands on. You've got a thin, angular face crowned by a fairly fluffy and long set of black hair. Taming such an unruly beast is difficult, but well worth the effort. You also tend to wear better clothes than the common rabble, your family being able to afford well tailored dresses. [+1d6 when dealing with nobles and individuals who care about such things.]
[] [Appearance] - An average appearance. You're just a normal girl, putting in the right amount of effort. While not unattractive, you're best considered plain with a button-nose and somewhat round cheeks. A medium-length curtain of blonde hair runs down your back, smoothed and simple. You don't have a preference over dresses or work clothes. [+1d6 when interacting with common folk. It's easier for them to get along with you.]
[] [Appearance] - A tomboyish appearance. Dresses, brushes, makeup? Bah. You don't see the point. In your youth you ran around with the street kids, caring little about staying clean or unruffled. You've got a short-cropped head of red hair, locks swept over your ears to keep out of the way. You're used to putting hard effort into things and have got stamina to match. [+1d6 when attempting any feats of athleticism. Running, climbing, jumping. That sort of thing.]
[] [Appearance] - A book-wormish appearance. A pair of wide spectacles cover your face. Rather ironic considering one of your affinities was sight, but you've had these since childhood. They're not too bulky, though, and shouldn't impede you much. You don't care much for appearance, preferring long sleeves and being drowned in fabric. Brown hair falls over your shoulders. Somewhat ostracized for not being very 'interesting', you've turned to studying to entertain yourself. Books and scrolls have always called to you. [+1d6 when attempting to learn any information via a library, book, scroll, or other written method.]
[] [Appearance] - Write in. [Bonus will be determined on result.]

So people do take notice of your person. While not the most beautiful or daring, you're quite the character. Especially your eyes, a pair of vibrantly emerald orbs. Your mother's eyes.

Stepping into the crowd, you take your place, blending in where you do best.

[] [Intrigue Pool] - 5d6. You're a natural savant when it comes to speaking to others. Talking is often your best way forward, and you know how to navigate social situations well.
[] [Intrigue Pool] - 4d6. You would say talking is one of your strong suits. It's easy to talk to others, but you're not the best.
[] [Intrigue Pool] - 3d6. You've got average social skills. Not great, not terrible. Middle of the road.

Here is the Main Statistics part of character creation. I'll be posting a full post about your stats sometime, but the basic gist is you have four 'Pools' which represent your basic stats.

To begin with, one's Skirmish Pool is the source of both their combative capability and their sheer grit and vigor. Generally, one uses their Skirmish Pool during combat. Not only that, but SP will also be used for tests of strength, one's ability to avoid traps or danger, and to withstand poison and disease.

The second on the list is your Proficiency Pool. Picking open a lock, searching for a trail of blood, gathering herbs without poisoning yourself, are all examples of what you can do with the right know-how. Generally you use your PP to do tasks that your average layman cannot accomplish.

Third is your Locomotion Pool. As the name might suggest, it is your capability to, well, move. If you need to climb a tree, leap a gap, or navigate a narrow ledge, this is the Pool for you. Whenever you encounter an obstacle you must consider your capability to get around it. Climbing up a small ledge may be easy for your average person, but scaling a smooth castle wall is much harder.

Last on the list is your Intrigue Pool. This measures both your capability to influence a crowd or person, and also your ability to navigate social situations and verbal disasters. Physical appearance mostly does not matter for this Pool. It is more reliant in how one acts, behaves, and adapts to scenarios where people require talking.

I assume we can't take the max 5d6 in all our pools so I would like to save that for Proficiency.

[X] [Appearance] - A book-wormish appearance.
[x] [Intrigue Pool] - 3d6

Edit: should probably explain... She has a natural demerit in social situations due to her Sight Affinity making it uncomfortable. This would cause her to wish to avoid social situations worsening her skill. Book worm to avoid said social situations that would put her in the spotlight.

Her affinity towards Sight is a temporary 'debuff', not one that she's experienced her whole life. It's also not much of a big deal, just an uncomfortable thing to note.

Side note; Nia is 16 years old and discovered her affinities a year ago.

I have a theory about that actually... Shared by others in the community.

Why do people develop the affinities they have? Even the girl with the most specific affinity in history has this in common, along with many others. It's personal relations to said facet, to said thing.

She has likely dealt or cared about these Aspects not necessarily liked but dealt with them for a while now. Especially Sight, isn't it weird that her second strongest affinity was hard for her to spot if it made her uncomfortable by noticing how people looked at her? A rational explanation if this theory is true, is because she's always felt like it, it's just not always had a basis in reality, if this is the case she's been a natural loner causing social interactions to be uncomfortable as she's never been strong in such regards.

Likewise, she could also be a naturally social person. Having eyes on her all the time could have influenced her in many ways. But yes, the interpretation is up to you all.

So... not to be rude, but if we're going to be voting for all 4 skill pools, and we have a mechanism for it anyway. Why aren't we voting for all 4 skill pools right now?

Because it's cooler for it to come up in-post rather than me just dumping all 4 choices at once.

Provided they are intimately linked, by providing one choice before all others, it poisons the well. People are most likely to choose 5d6 due to it being the most potent, and without an immediate compromise they'll be less able to comprehend what they're actually giving up.

Edit: not to say Social skills are irrelevant and they should if the build is optimal be 5 or 4d6 anyway.

I suppose this is true, but ultimately it's a difference of just a few d6s. You'll improve your core stats down the line.

Unfortunately there are not catgirls in this setting. God has abandoned us to suffer and starve. Truly a cruel fate.
She doesn't need a tail or cat-ears on her head.
Nya is catgirl enough.

@Donk
Do appearance write-ins have to be aimed at a specific bonus, or can they just be what we'd prefer her to look like?

[X] [Appearance] - Write-ins: Pretty n practical. Brown hair falls over you shoulder, smoothed with de-spiralling, when needed a finger-width of hair is spiralled around the rest above the tip to tie them into a ponytail. You favor simple, well made dresses, which include little hidden textile strips that can be spiral-knotted with their higher up counterpart to shorten the dress when its full length is inconveniet (also: proper pockets!) [+1d6 when interacting with common folk. It's easier for them to get along with you.]

[X] [Intrigue Pool] - 4d6
