Silver Eyed Mistress of the Night Sky (RWBY/MGLN)

Huh. I would have thought she'd be all over new ways to kick butt.
I love Yang, but at series start she's a blunt force object. Tai calls her out on it in Volume 4. To Yang, the answer if "hit it" didn't work is "hit it harder". Even more, a shield spell would be detrimental to her fighting style at series start, since her entire fighting style revolves around taking hits to amp up Burn.

So yeah, Yang gave a token effort to learn Strike Arts, but quickly gave up to go back to training what she feels she's good at.

I think her response would be along the lines of "you've defined magic badly". From what she's been told it's basically just another way of using Aura to produce a variety of effects. Compared to the Schnee family semblance, there's a lot of similarities. I think she'd just assume it's a weird sharable semblance that requires a lot of training to use properly... and they're insisting on calling it "not a semblance".

Well to be fair magic is called magic in Belka due to cultural osmosis since magic in the ancient past was beleived to be supernatural until it was studied deeply and what once was a special power very few could use even sporadically turned into a well understood structured replicable practice.

Terms like mage and such being used in the modern day are also holdovers from those ancient times in Nanoha.

Chapter 7
Weiss walked with the rest of her team, including Yang, who had appeared in the last ten minutes before the first bell with Zafira and wolfed down a plate of breakfast. Signum and Ruby were leading the way, while the rest of the "Wolkenritter", except Reinforce who was trailing behind them, spread out throughout the building.

Weiss thought over their baseless claims of magic as they sat for the first class of the day. Why would they support a child's delusions that magic existed when everyone knew there was no such thing?

She had been given a sheltered cripple who still believed in children's fairy tales as a team leader. This would not do. She had to show she was better suited for team leader, and could whip Ruby into shape.

They sat down near the front of the classroom, while Signum and Reinforce took spots in the back, watching the students file in. Finally, team JNPR, yet more evidence Ozpin didn't know what he was doing when picking Team Leaders, came rushing in just before the final bell rang, climbing into seats near the back of the class.

A rather rotund man wearing a burgundy suit came walking in, a white mustache and squinting eyes on his face. He looked over them all, lips quirking upwards as he looked over them all, "Hello! I am Professor Peter Port. I'll be in charge of your Grimm Studies during your time at Beacon. I watched over your Entrance Exam highlights, and allow me to tell you, some of you impressed me quite a bit! In fact, Mr. Winchester reminded me of when…"

Port launched into a monologue, talking about some probably made up story about a raucous adventure he had in his youth involving fighting ten beowolves in his underwear. Ruby leaned back in her chair, eyes growing unfocused as Signum began to pace in the background. That was rude. There had to be some moral to this story… Right?

Forty five minutes into the hour-long class, Weiss was forced to concede that if there had been, she had missed it completely. Port finally stopped, "saying, "Now, enough about me. I'm sure you're all excited to learn about some Grimm, aren't you? So let's start with," he pressed a button on his desk and a cage rattling towards them, "this! A mighty Boarbatusk! Now, who here has the bravery to face such a beast?"

Weiss noticed Ruby brace her cane against the desk, pointed straight at the cage, and shot her hand into the air, "I do, Professor!"

"Miss Schnee? Very well, come down and get ready. Hurry now, we don't have much time!"

Weiss rushed down, drawing Myrtenaster from her hip and entering a ready position. The bars dropped from the cage and the Boarbatusk lumbered out, before turning to stare, not at Weiss, but at Ruby, who stared back unfazed. Weiss lunged forwards, stabbing Myrtenaster into the Grimm's side before jumping back, watching the Grimm whip its attention to her.

Switching to Hard Light Dust, she formed a glyph in front of her as the Boarbatusk charged, being pushed back slightly by the force of the attack. Switching to ice, she froze the Grimm solid, before switching again to electricity Dust and sending it coursing through the Grimm, killing it moments before the bell went off.

Pyrrha Nikos was enjoying Beacon so far. Outside of the incident the first day when she has been badgered by Weiss Schnee, she hadn't been harassed by anyone about being the Invincible Girl. Even better, she had a team leader who didn't even seem to know who she was!

She was sitting in combat class, watching Jaune struggle against Cardin Winchester. Finally, Jaune's Aura fell into the danger zone and Professor Goodwitch called the match in Cardin's favor.

"Next is Pyrrha Nikos and-"

"Excuse me," a deep female voice said politely, "forgive my rudeness, but may I step into this match? I'd like to see how the best Beacon has to offer matches up."

Goodwitch stared at the pink haired woman who had spoken, before nodding, "Very well, just this once. Go get ready-"

"Laevatien, set up."

"Jawohl," the voice came from sword shaped trinket hanging from a necklace, and between one step and another the woman's entire uniform had changed. In the place of her pants and shirt was a pink quipo, a white jacket over it and an equally white half cape hanging from her hips, armor attached to both. Sheathed at her hip was a single edged sword, which she drew as she walked by a girl using a cane, who caught the hand and gave the knuckles a kiss. A small smile changed the serious features of the woman just enough to let the beauty underneath poke through. It was a very knightley gesture, Pyrrha couldn't help think as she entered the arena opposite the woman.

"My name is Signum," she greeted, "Wolkenritter in service to Ruby Rose. It's a pleasure to cross blades with you, Miss Nikos."

"Begin!" Professor Goodwitch called suddenly, and just as suddenly there was a blade entering Pyrrha's field of vision from the side.

Signum watched Pyrrha swing her shield into the path of Laevatien, the Device clashing with the shield before Pyrrha managed to get her feet under her and shove off, pushing Signum into the air and thrusting out with her dory spear. Twisting out of the path of the stab, Signum let mana flow into Laevatien, the blade igniting with flames as she came down on Pyrrha's head.

Pyrrha threw the shield between them, struggling with the strike. A black aura surrounded Laevatien for a moment, before flickering out, a look of shock appearing on Pyrrha's face as she shoved Signum off and took a shooter's position.

"A problem?" Signum asked politely, as she landed easily.

"...No, no problem at all," a smile spread across Pyrrha's face before she began to fire at Signum. Signum dashed to the side, easily outpacing the bullets, and switched Laevatien to Schlangenform, the sword dislocating into a whip sword. Lashing it at Pyrrha, she let it wrap around her sword and ripped it from the redhead's hands before locking Laevatien back into Schwertzform and rushed in. Pyrrha blocked repeatedly with her shield, backing towards her sword.

Signum rushed behind her, slashing into her Aura with Laevatien.

Pyrrha felt the sword bite into her Aura, spinning to slam Akoùo into Signum's face and scooping up Miló, bringing the sword into an uppercut slash against Signum's aura. Feeling a kick to the gut, she was pushed back. A large bullet casing came from near the hilt of Signum's sword, brighter flames igniting along it and she brought Akoùo up in time to absorb the slash of flames launched her way. Less then a second later, Pyrrha felt the urge to throw herself to the side, dodging a second flaming slash from Signum.

She was on the backfoot.

She was on the backfoot.

Pyrrha fought the urge to laugh in excitement, bringing Miló up to clash with Signum's sword. They clashed again and again, Pyrrha moving as fast as she could to keep up with Signum's slashes. Dodging, deflecting, a dance of danger she hadn't felt in years.

Finally, Signum jumped back, pulling her sheath from her hip and snapping it in place at the hilt of the sword. Drawing back a bowstring made of energy, two more casings were expelled as an arrow of fire formed. Pyrrha changed Miló to spear form, pulling it back, and throwing it with a bang as Signum released the flaming arrow. They clash for milliseconds before Milò was blown off course, the arrow flying straight and true and smashing into Akoūo, throwing Pyrrha back and embedding her the in the wall.

"Aura is in the red. The winner is Signum," Professor Goodwitch said, cutting off the fight there.

Pyrrha leaned into the crater she was in, breathing in and out as a smile blossomed across her face. She had lost.

She had finally lost.

story appears to have two copys of it in the smae post, but the second version has much better spaceing.
A very entertaining chapter otherwise.

For someone with a reputation of being undefeated, defeat is a helluva drug for Pyrrha.

So, will Crocea Mors get upgraded into a Storage Device?

If I remember right early Weiss was a bitch because of her upbringing, and chilled out later. Currently she reads as still in nepo-baby mode, so she just needs a reality check. Or you could try Takamachi approved friendship Lazers and work from there. I mean, it mixed with Nanoha. You're gonna get 'Befriended' at some point.

That's what I'm going for. It's just worry that she's too extreme on the bitch-o-meter. Her throwing around some ableist language, while a conscious decision on my part, makes me worry she comes across as too unsympathetic.

Your far from that level. She's not swearing revenge or petty harm to Ruby, just convinced of her belief that magic is not real and determined to prove said fact. shes at worst a 3/10 on the bitch-o-meter, unpleasant but not a real problem.

Wiess read almost exactly like she did in the first season here. She's that much of a bitch in Season 1. She mellows out quite a bit the longer she's out from under the weight of Jacques expectations. In fact, her bitchiness comes and goes the farther she is from Jacques throughout the show.

She had been given a sheltered cripple who still believed in children's fairy tales as a team leader. This would not do. She had to show she was better suited for team leader, and could whip Ruby into shape.

And Weiss is so arrogant she hasn't realised the problem is a difference in nomenclature. And Ruby has not yet realised that Weiss and Blake haven't comprehended just what she implied with her Linker core reference.

What Ruby and Weiss consider Magic is not the same thing.
What Weiss considers Magic, Ruby would define as Rare Skills, and Granting Rare Skills to others. (Which would be very useful to know, Canon Nanoha-verse can't truely do that)
What Ruby considers Magic, Weiss should consider it an alternate methodology of Aura use.

She was on the backfoot.

She was on the backfoot.

Pyrrha fought the urge to laugh in excitement,

Well, that is to be expected. While their memory is definitely incomplete, the Wolkenritter each have spent more time in battle and on the battlefield than Pyrrha has been alive. The sheer difference in experience alone would guarantee a win for the Wolkenritter. Especially since no one has realised just how good they are.

What Ruby considers Magic, Weiss should consider it an alternate methodology of Aura use.
It's more complicated than that. Weiss in this fic defines magic as the generation of an elemental effect without the use of Dust. Because Semblance can do nearly anything under the sun except that. So because she isn't connecting that Aura and Mana are the same thing, she's thinking Ruby is claiming something that is literally impossible under Remnant's understanding of Aura.

Of course, as shown in this chapter, mana can be used to generate elemental effects.

Of course, as shown in this chapter, mana can be used to generate elemental effects.

Most of it is based upon the 'Alternate Methodology of Aura'

Even in canon Nanoha, elemental affinity, the ability to turn your mana into an element, is just a step up of a Rare skill. You either have it or you haven't. It is common enough to not be considered a Rare skill, but for all the rest, it is one. After all, you can't actually learn it. You can learn to use it, but if you don't have the base capability, it is useless. For example, Nanoha will never shoot ligntning like Fate can, because Nanoha just doesn't have the electricity affinity.

Aura clearly doesn't fully use the capablities of a Linker core. After all, what does Aura give you?
1. A basic physical reinforcment - someone with aura is measurably stronger, faster and recovers faster than someone without.
2. A forcefield similar to a Barrier Jacket - But wether they can be used simultaneously, of which of the 2 is the better option is still to be described.
3. A Semblance - 1 single spell that can be used without a spell circle or any other warning that it is going to be used.

Like it was once described in Hazredous Interruptions: "If you can only use 1 single spell your entire life, you get damn good at using it"

So it is clear that the use of Aura simply can't properly manifest an elemental affinity, while the normal Nanoha-style magic can do it.
On the other hand, pretty much everyone can get their Aura unlocked and can train it. Nanoha-style combat magic is a fairly elite art, only the best of the best will ever stand out. That is also the reason that Nanoha-style magic pretty much requires a Device, just to use it with any proper efficiency. Aura on the other hand, is a pretty low hanging fruit, fully attainable by just having someone awaken it, and requires nothing else.

Dust, on the other hand, is a whole other kettle of fish. That is probably some sort of naturally crystallised mana. and can be sorted by its elemental affinity. If that is correct, would someone like Fate, for example, be able to make Electicity Dust?
You know, the amplifying effect of Dust and Aura? Could that not be the basics of Belkan Cardridges?

And, while I am aware that Hayate was fully capable of replicating Fate her electrical blasts, that is mostly because of the Rare Skill connected to the Tome of the Night Sky: Collect & Use. The Master of the Night Sky is capable of every spell recorded in the Tome, even if the Master should not have the Linker core prequisites to do so.
Umm, would that mean that the effect of the Silver Eyes is now also recorded in the Tome?

Somekind of Mana Stones are mentioned to exist in Nanoha and are used in devices.

But mana doesn't have elemental affinites in Nanoha. What Fate and Signum does is just convert magical energy into normal electricity and heat respectively. Their mana conversion affinity is just a denotation of their linker cores ability to do this at a much higher efficiency than average.

You slightly misunderstand me.

Yes, Nanoha Mana is just energy, that can be changed into a different form of energy by a Linker core.
If it is a capability versus efficiency can be discussed till the sun goes out.

You know, with exception of Hayate, who just casts copied spells, we never see any character cast spells of different elements than their usual.
At best, someone can cast an elemental spell they usually can't by using a specialised Device. (Chrono using Durandal to cast Eternal Coffin, his attempt to seal the Book of Darkness)
So it is still not know if you need the proper Mana Conversion Affinity to convert mana into an element period, or if it just isn't worth the effort to do it the hard way.

Dust seems to be a sort of crystallised mana, that comes pre-converted into an element. It can be easily set of by mana (or aura), but instead of a blast of mana/aura, you get a blast of whatever element the dust is. And they do get creative. I mean, Gravity Dust? Hard-Light Dust? Those are not even forms of energy...

Hard Light Dust is at least explicitly artificial, so it probably goes through some form of processing to be made. That's why it's so rare.

Gravity Dist meanwhile is a mixture of two other types of Dust.

Anyways, point being, to Weiss, the only thing she's directly seen that can be quantified as "true" magic was Signum getting fired up.
