Easy enough the the stink the stink of of Kariya Matou radiates so radiates so pungent a that a smell that his failure is is easily recognizable.
He did journalism by the way. He is the anti shonen. Ya know seeing as he ran away from his family burden told no one he cared about the very predictably relevant facts of the matter and came back to suck and fail in the last hour. This leading to a spiral that almost destroyed the world.
That Kariya succeeded? Netorared Toshkaka. Got the girl and managed three very time consuming jobs to have a plaplace for his three daughters in the customs of mass verse magi?
And has angel magics? I'd sooner believe that he told Toshiomi and motivated him to do that.
Mmmm, I always saw Kariya as a tragic figure. He finds out that his family's magic is probably one of the most evil things currently going on in Japan, but he lacks the personal power to do anything about it. To gain that power he'd have to participate in that evil. So instead he strikes back with the only weapon he can, by removing himself and his talent from the Matou family, leaving Zouken with no available heirs, which was probably very difficult for Kariya. Due to this he becomes poor, doesn't consider himself worthy of Aoi (no money, no status, few prospects), and thus never confesses his feelings to her, and thus is never accepted/rejected. He never moves on as a result, but out of respect for Aoi he continues to swallow his feelings now that she is married to a guy who primarily treats her as an heir producer (which Aoi is perfectly fine with, but that's another matter), and her daughters as tools for furthering magecraft (to be fair, Tohsaka also considers himself a tool to further magecraft. Heaven's Feel route of the original F/SN does a good job exploring why this attitude tends to be...bad for those involved in magic).
Then Tohsaka hands Sakura over to Zouken. It should be fairly obvious to Tohsaka that Zouken is a monster, what sort of magic he practices, and how this is probably not a good thing for Sakura, but due to his own flaws, Tohsaka has no clue. However, Tohsaka has always had the reputation of being competent, so Kariya has every reason to believe Tohsaka knew what was in store for Sakura. Kariya is now in a tough position. He wants to save Sakura. He can't ask Tohsaka to reverse it, because as far as Kariya knows, Tohsaka approves of the situation. He has no skill in magic, because Nasuverse magic is based on the past and learning knowledge horded and passed down by your family, so he had no opportunity to learn it. However, he manages to find a way to save Sakura (who is not related to him, nor does he have any actual obligation to help in any way) by sacrificing himself. It was pretty clear that even if he won the grail war, he'd still die from the worms within the year. If he'd succeeded he'd be obviously a noble figure who basically sacrificed his reputation, wealth, power, feelings and life to resist evil and for the sake of others. Instead, due to the nature of the work, he starts breaking under the strain, and with a little help from our favorite priest, becomes completely broken and ends up hurting Aoi. Still, he does not give up, and Berseker does pretty well in the war, only losing when Kariya's body finally starts failing due to the strain. Kariya's last actions are attempting to rescue Sakura, before he collapses and dies at her feet.
So, in a different setting, where he can gain power without using his family's methods, I wouldn't find it surprising at all if he left the Matous earlier, sacrificed his health by working himself nearly to death, and then actually confessing to Aoi because he sees himself as able to support her/now able to protect her from his family. I don't see how you got that he Netorared Tohsaka. They were both competing for Aoi's affections, and the Kariya who was able to exist in this more forgiving setting won. As for the angel magics, I needed something impressive for Hasami to look up too, and the angel motif fit well with the magic mechanics that haven't yet been revealed.

VOTES LOCKED
[] Go in anyway. They probably can't see you, so you should be fine.
Is nearly unanimous. SV continues to defy my attempts to predict. Y'all selected the option I was pretty sure no one would be interested in. What happened to that famous SV caution? I have less prepared ahead of time for that option...so the update might be sometime tonight rather than this afternoon.
