Author's note: Whenever I have things happen that make me update late, I always feel like they are particularly noteworthy or whatnot. Then I go over to conquest quest on space battles and see what has been happening to Sojiko. I'm shutting up now about my problems. Forever.
[] Go with Hasami
-[] So, what does Mississippi or shrimp boats have to do with healing?
-[] Talk more about magic.
-[] Tell me more about maguses
"Ginji-san, you'd let a fair young maiden walk home unescorted? Tsk, tsk." you shake your head at Ginji to express your disapproval. "I'll walk Yukimiya-san home."
You are surprised when Ginji barely reacts to your jab, as he instead looks at you stone-faced for a moment before suddenly coughing into his hand. Confused, you look over to Hasami to see that she's turned bright red. How the heck did you upset her by insulting Ginji's lack of chivalry? You're trying to figure out if you should apologize, when Ginji turns and casually throws a hand up as he walks away.
"See you later, then," he says, stealing your planned exit. Though he didn't sound as cool as if you were doing it. In fact, he almost sounded amused by something, completely ruining the effect! You are totally not pouting behind your scarf at having your cool exit stolen.
"Um, should we get going then, Kimiko?" Hasami asks. It seems she's decided not to bring up however you upset her. Relieved, you fall into step beside her as you begin walking down the street. There's a heavy silence between you though, which you are not sure how to breech. So you do what you always do when there's an uncomfortable silence; you get out your music player and select one of your more low-key
playlists, making sure to turn the sound down low enough that you'll be able to hear Hasami if she wants to talk. You think over the fight as you walk. You thought you had done pretty well, particularly considering that you have never been in a fight while you were alive, but you can't help feeling like you were lacking. Even though you had won in the end, you felt like you could have been more awesome. You had even gotten hurt, and if Hasami hadn't turned out to have magic, you didn't know what you would have done. You both continue walking without saying anything to the end of the block, where you stop for the light. The urge to say something becomes unbearable, so you blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.
"So, what does Mississippi or shrimp boats have to do with healing?" you ask just as the crosswalk light turned green. You both cross the street before she replies.
"Um, well, it doesn't really." she explains. "I just think English Poetry is really cool, and that poem fits thematically and poetry is uh...maybe I'm not explaining very well." You guess she noticed how confused you looked. "Let me start over" she says. She thinks for a few moments before she begins
lecturing.
"Um, well, maguses are people whose bodies naturally collect magic from the surrounding world. Magic builds up within them, and then by thinking in certain patterns you learn to create effects in the world. The hard part is that the patterns of thought are never exactly the same between two people, just like how even identical twins are different in small ways. So when a magus discovers a pattern that does something, it is really important that they remember that exact way of thinking. It's no good if they can't repeat it, so we kinda match it with some other easily repeatable pattern. Some use hand movements, drawings, random phrases. I like to use English Poetry." Hasami pauses to smile at you. "You like English, right? You recognized 'Mississippi' at least."
"I do. It was my favorite class back when I was uh...well, I had hoped to work as a translator. I had gotten pretty good." You reply. The near mention of your death causes Hasami to lose her smile. She looks at you uncertainly for a few moments before she continues.
"Uh, s-so yeah. I like English so I chose that. We maguses kinda hypnotize ourselves so we don't get distracted while casting, which would ruin the spell. So, you can't choose something that you might say or do accidentally. So, um, yeah that's why English poetry. I chose that poem because its themes had to do with what my spell was doing," Hasami says quietly. She's walking a bit faster now, and doesn't look as cheerful as she did before. You decide to keep the conversation up in an effort to take her mind off of
whatever is bothering her.
"So what's with the glowy future technology stuff?" You ask. Shouldn't magic just be pretty lights?
"Oh! Well, magic is expressed differently for each person. Whenever I cast an effect, the magic I'm using coalesces into some gadget. My dad though, his effect is way cooler than mine. His always manifests as some kind of Angel. It's largely cosmetic, though there are some differences between our magic," Hasami continues, "It's why I thought you were using magic, because your boots and gauntlets appeared out of nowhere."
"Wait, back up. Angels? You're Dad is a magus?" you ask. Angels? Weird, is he a priest or something?
"Oh, yeah! He taught me everything I know. Though he isn't just a Magus! Before my parents started dating, there was this other fire magus interested in my mother, he was powerful, wealthy, and well respected. My dad had been in love with my mother for years, but because he was estranged from his own family, he was only half-trained, poor, and looked down on. He realized that if he didn't do anything he'd lose her forever, so he decided to change himself. So he did! In just a few years he became one of the most powerful maguses in Japan, head of his own business, and due to a favor he performed for a Shinto Priest, he became head of the local shrine, and still found time to win over my mother," Hasami explains enthusiastically. Well, you certainly improved her mood!
"He's worked really, really hard though. His hair is all white even though he isn't that old yet. So he decided that he didn't want such a hard life for his daughters. So my oldest sister, Rin, is going to be the head of Dad's company, the next oldest, Sakura, is going to succeed him as head of the shrine, and I" she says while turning to face you dramatically, "am going to succeed him as the family Magus!" So her dad is a priest. And a Businessman. And a Magus. You could see how that might be a bit much for one person. "Also, we're pretty much here!"
You look around in confusion for a moment, as there weren't any houses along this stretch of road, only a low wall lining a hill. Then you realize that the hill itself is her "home." The hill has bamboo plants and trees planted all along it's hillside, with stone steps leading up to a decently sized shrine at the top that you could just make out. Hasami leads you up the steps, and then before you reach the top, she goes down a side path that would be quite hard to see if you didn't know to look for it. You then see her family's two-story house. Constructed in a traditional Japanese style, it was quite an unexpected sight this close to Tokyo. You had thought your parents were well off with their 4LDK apartment, but you could fit their entire apartment on the first floor and still have room left over!
"Come on in, I'll introduce you to whoever is home!" Hasami says as she grabs your hand to pull you forwards. You manage to keep her from dragging you, however.
"Will they even be able to see me? Or what if only some of them can see me?" You point out. You don't want Hasami's family to think she's crazy.
"Oh. I-I forgot. Uh. I have no idea. I guess you could wait out here? Oh, you can walk through walls right? You could just go right into my room, and I'll meet you there."
What do you want to do?
[] Stay outside and wait for her.
[] Go in anyway. They probably can't see you, so you should be fine.
[] Go directly to Hasami's Bedroom.
Do not pass go. Being a ghost has it's advantages.
