Beware uncharted lands, for there be spoilers afoot!
This may seem like it's overdue, but based on a comment I recently received elsewhere, apparently the fact that there will be spoilers to both the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and the events of various games in the Persona Series (including but not limited to Persona 3, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, and Persona 5) wasn't made clear just by how the plot has unveiled.

So I'm placing a sticky post for this message: if you have not watched the original Evangelion anime, or if you have not played the Persona games — especially P3, P4, P5, and their updated re-releases — then take note that this story contains spoilers to all of them. Read at your own risk.

How likely do you think something will happen on the day of the new moon?

There's been an Angel boss fight every single New Moon since Shinji first manifested Unit-01 back in June against Sachiel.

June New Moon was Shamshel.

July New Moon was Ramiel.

August New Moon was Armisael and Gaghiel.

It's been pretty well-established that these are the equivalent of the Full Moon Battles from Persona 3, at least in terms of timing.

A fight with an Angel is outright guaranteed at this point.

9/7 - Evening
As everyone completed their meals, Mayumi suddenly cleared her throat. "So. Ikari-san..."

"Yes, Yamagishi-san?"

"I couldn't help but notice that, earlier during the spars...you didn't say 'Kirishima-san'. You said 'Mana-san'. A few times, in fact."

"...I did?" Shinji honestly hadn't caught himself; he had gotten so used to that, if only because Mana hadn't corrected him or requested that he change it. Having heard the others say 'Mana-san' so consistently, though...perhaps he had simply caught up with them? I guess...there just wasn't a point to using it anymore. When was the last time I used her surname like that? The day of our fight with Strega at the Himmel facility? "Well..."

(As Shinji thought about it, he missed quite a few things: Mana's suspicious glare sent at Mayumi; Kensuke's shrewd grin at the same; Toji and Asuka's confused frowns; and Rei quietly nibbling on a vegetable roll, seemingly detached from the drama entirely.)

"...the rest of our team has been calling her Mana-san, and we're all friends, so..." Shinji shrugged. "I guess it just felt proper? I guess I wasn't thinking..." Nervously scratching at the back of his head, he remarked, "Sorry if it made things awkward..."

"This whole conversation is awkward," griped Asuka. "So you called her by her given name instead of her surname. Why is this a big deal?"

"Another cultural difference, Sohryu-san," remarked Rei.

"Yeah, so butt out," grumbled Toji.

Asuka rolled her eyes. "I mean, from the sounds of it, literally nothing has changed about your personal dynamics since the last time he called her 'Kirishima-san' or whatever. So what if he calls her 'Mana-san' or 'Kirishima-san'? If your feelings for each other changed, that would be true regardless of what you call each other."

"But it's a socially acceptable and recognizable way for you and for other people to categorize relationships. Among other things, it's a matter of politeness," explained Kensuke. "And it's efficient, but that's kind of a dry and unnatural way of looking at it."

The redhead snorted. "So? Why should other people's opinions matter when it comes to a relationship? If you like someone, you like 'em. If you hate someone, you hate 'em. Why would other people's opinions affect that?"

At this, the others couldn't immediately rebut her point. Shinji decided to speak up. "Well...if there's one thing I've learned, is that relationships don't occur in a vacuum. If someone you trust tells you that a relationship is a good thing, or that getting involved with someone is a bad idea...then should their opinion be discounted?"

The Beast laughed.

"And how many people have told you to throw in the towel with regards to your father?"

His Other quietly shook his head.

"It is one thing to take the opinion of others into account; yet another to discard them; an entirely different matter, to proceed in spite of acknowledging their concerns...isn't that right?"

"But we're not talking about people you trust, we're talking about total strangers!" protested Asuka. "Tch. Whatever. I just don't get the point of stirring drama over something so silly."

Mayumi balked at the apparent accusation. "I-I-I wasn't stirring drama!"

At this, Kensuke actually winced. "Eh..."

"Here, I'll prove it," interrupted Asuka, unintentionally coming to Mayumi's rescue. Clasping her hands together and adopting a seductive tone, she cheerfully said, "Oh, Kensuke~♡, Toji~♡, and Shinji~♡, you were all so manly during training!"

Shinji's face blazed red, whilst Kensuke sputtered — wide-eyed — at the sheer audacity; Toji, to his credit, merely crossed his arms in response, yet even his cheeks were slightly flushed. Mayumi was agog at what Asuka had said; Rei didn't react; as for Mana, she simply seemed confused. "It sounded like you were complimenting them...but I can tell that you don't mean it."

"My point exactly," answered Asuka, once more speaking normally. "It's the emotions and the intention behind what you call someone that matters, more than what you actually say. I mean, just speaking about Japan: statistically speaking, there's probably a couple who only use their surnames with each other, yet are incredibly close; meanwhile, I'd bet there are a bunch of people who refer to each other by their given names that are incredibly crappy towards each other. Yet your society would judge the former as being distant, and the latter as being close buddies?"

Once again, the others couldn't immediately rebut her point. At this point, Rei spoke up. "I believe you are trying to summarize and oversimplify a cultural difference...and all for the sake of justifying your intention to call your peers by their given name instead of their surname." She spoke so calmly and so matter-of-factly that there was nothing to latch onto as a point of contention.

Asuka didn't respond. Not at first. "...maybe," she eventually admitted.

Toji's jaw dropped. "Wait, so this whole thing is all because you're being lazy?!"

"It's a stupid social convention!" retorted Asuka. "You overcomplicate it too much!"

"More like you're too used to how they do things in Europe," grumbled Kensuke.

"Whatever. I know I'm right," petulantly said Asuka, rising from the booth. "I'm tired. Can we go now?"

The utter whiplash was too much for everyone else. "...I think that's a good idea," said Shinji, playing the role of diplomat for everyone else, still too befuddled by Asuka's demeanor. "I'll pay for everyone's meals."

Asuka arched an eyebrow. "Trying to be a gentleman, hm?"

"I mean, my salary from NERV is kind of a lot for just me..." He didn't even really spend that much on anything, to be honest.

"That's not the sort of information you should just volunteer," she said, nonchalantly strolling out the front door.

"...she's exhausting," muttered Kensuke, slumping onto the table.

"I have to agree," murmured Mayumi.

Rei shrugged. "You will get used to her."

Once Shinji paid for dinner and Mana retrieved her weapons, the seven teenagers gathered outside. Mayumi briefly took Mana aside to talk with her about something, giving Shinji time to try and smooth things over. "Well, today was...eventful." Lightly bowing in Asuka's direction, he said, "I look forward to working with you, moving forward."

"Such a polite boy," said Asuka, looking at him with a complicated expression. "Well...I'm satisfied that you're all not completely hopeless. So that's better than most people."

"How generous," chorused Kensuke and Toji.

Asuka rolled her eyes at the duo. "Indeed; I'm very generous." Without warning, she began fading into static. "Well, see you all tomorrow for 'school'. Later!" Her voice faded out as her form vanished from sight.

"...well. She's certainly pleasant," mused Kensuke.

"More like bitchy," growled Toji.

"Suzuhara-san, I think that's too far," cautioned Shinji.

"She is used to working with adults," reminded Rei. "I imagine she will eventually warm up to you all."

"...so are you confirming she's an extreme tsundere?" asked Kensuke. When Rei simply stared flatly in return, he added, "I'm going to take that as a yes. Good to know."

("-I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to-" said Mayumi.)

(Mana interrupted her. "It's not a big deal. It's fine.")

("...okay, if you say so...")

Finally, Mana and Mayumi made their way back to the group. "So, I guess we're heading back to the Academy, now?" asked Mayumi.

"I draw the line on 'fast travel'," growled Toji.

"It'd be pretty far to walk, though," said Kensuke.

As such, they ended up taking the bus back to the Academy.

"This seems...out of place," observed Toji.

"The bus is an adequate method of public transport," said Rei.

"At least they let me bring my weapons on board," said Mana, taking up a whole row by herself.

"The wonders of a NERV badge," joked Kensuke.

"Yeah..." murmured Mayumi, still apparently unsettled by the dinner conversation. "You won't mind making your way back to Katsuragi's alone?"

Mana shrugged. "I'll just take a shortcut through the Metaverse. Besides, this is...nice."

"...what are the odds that Sohryu would find something to criticize about Japan's public transportation?" asked Kensuke.

Toji snorted. "A hundred percent, if only to intentionally annoy us..."

Shinji simply let the conversation wash over him, staring quietly outside the window as the bus rumbled through the streets of Tokyo-3. Today was...something. He had no clue if Asuka was truly going to fit in with everyone...but for some reason, he looked forward to seeing how things would pan out...

"Yes, Yamagishi-san?"

Smooth Mayumi, real smooth.

This is probably going to become a tricky situation. I think Mana and Shinji could develop a good relationship with each other, but it is going to take a lot of work given the messed up relationships and lives both of them currently have. Mayumi and the others playing matchmaker could both help the two get over certain hurdles and make things much more worse than they needed to be.

Poor Misato, she already has it rough. Now she is going to have to start worrying about her foster-kids love-lives as well.

Misato: On the one hand, I don't NEED this right now...but on the other hand, I get to give someone the Shovel Talk!

Honestly, Yamagishi-san, Mana has a bit of a "not attached to her family name in the first place" vibe.

Probably on account of not having any actual family to share it with.

Making a conscious effort to use Eastern name order for Japanese characters makes it easier to remember.

(For bonus effect, use Western name order for Asuka and Mari.)

There's a reason Sister Makinami has strictly been saying stuff like 'Miss Sohryu' or 'Miss Ayanami' or 'Mister Ikari'. ;)

EDIT:

Honestly, Yamagishi-san, Mana has a bit of a "not attached to her family name in the first place" vibe.

Probably on account of not having any actual family to share it with.

One of the reasons it's fresh on her mind is the whole conversation she had with Mana about the subject of names and why Shinji still called her Kirishima-san from mere days ago in-universe. Winding back to August the 31st:

/Katsuragi Apartment, Tokyo-3/

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzffVa0jFwM

Mayumi Yamagishi sat in...well, she supposed it was now 'her' room.

The books from her family's apartment had been moved in, set into a large pile in the center that was taller than she was.

(After the movers had deposited the last of her books into the bedroom, Misato had looked at her with a...mildly chagrined expression. "So...I'm going to put my foot down and request at least a touch more organization, because the state of your old room was kind of ridiculous. If we need to spring for additional shelves, we can do that..." A complicated look flickered across the woman's face, followed by her eyes darting in the direction of the master bedroom. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do something about about my frickin' hypocrisy..." Over the next few hours, the sounds of grumbling could be heard from Misato's room as she put it through a fierce cleaning.)

I suppose I'm not the only forced to change by circumstances, mused the bespectacled girl. The previous day had been spent trying to devise a new system, followed by putting up books in a particular fashion that would have made the average librarian weep.

Alas, there was only so long she could dedicate to such a laborious task, which is why she was taking some downtime...by concentrating on summer homework. The assignments weren't that difficult, so she found it rather...cathartic.

It also allowed her to absentmindedly think about the question that Ikari had asked Team Statherós earlier that day. What type of love is most important of the four...? What an odd question for supercomputers to ask...and for what reason? Platonic love, separate from romance and relationships...the bonds of family...the affection of friendship...and the love of 'aishiteru'. How can one rank them?

Her thoughts circulated upon each other in that fashion for a time, so much so that she almost didn't hear Mana walk in. "Ah, Mana-san...?"

"What'cha doin'?"

"Ah. Thinking about Ikari-san's question from this morning...while doing summer homework."

Mana clinically looked at the books and notepads sitting on the floor in front of her, before looking towards the massive stacks of tomes and novels and manga still occupying the majority of the room. "Your bed's still leaning against the wall in the living room. Shouldn't you be focusing on finishing with your organizing?"

Mayumi flushed with embarrassment; the only reason she could think of as to why Misato had yet to get on her case was because the woman had been relatively busy working on her computer, grumbling about a disc of some sorts. "Um...I guess I'm trying to distract myself...?"

"...guess that's fair enough." Eyeing some of the visual novels, Mana's focus turned towards a rather old Featherman book. "Not quite Featherman Z....might as well expand my horizons..." Plopping down besides Mayumi, Mana asked. "Figured out an answer to the question?"

"...I'm honestly not sure," admitted Mayumi.

"Hmm." Mana wordlessly pulled out her phone, typing something with measured movements. It took her a minute, but once she sent it, Mayumi felt her phone buzz.

-Team Statherós Group-

Mana: my answer is all of them. why should i have to pick one love or another? it just seems like a waste of time trying to choose

"Is that how you feel?" asked Mayumi.

Mana shrugged. "I know my family's not like a 'blood' relationship...but my Big Sis, Little Sis, and my brothers...I can't think of them as anything else. They're what kept me going through all of Tokita's shit. But now...you and the boys are my comrades. My friends. And that feels nice to admit."

Mayumi couldn't help the smile on her face; even though it may not have seemed like much, the differences between Mana before the road trip and after were heartening. "And what about the other two? Platonic versus romantic? Which is somewhat confusing, because you can have friendships blossom into romances, and family members who share romantic love, such as between a husband and wife." (And some other types that she didn't dare mention right now...the Internet could be a scary place...)

"...guess what I have with my siblings and you guys would be platonic, right? Not even sure what a romantic love would feel like," Mana admitted bluntly.

...I wonder. Eager for yet another distraction, Mayumi asked, "What do you think of the boys in our group? About Aida-san, Suzuhara-san, and Ikari-san?"

"Like in what way?"

"Just whatever comes to mind first."

Mana frowned, crossing her arms as she began thinking. "Aida's a bit of a goofball, but he tries hard? Suzuhara...he's straightforward. Reliable. Maybe it's 'cause he knows what it's like to have a sibling you'd do anything for. As for Ikari..." Mana went quiet. "He's tough. Kind of scary. But also...hmm. Talking about it like this feels weird."

"Oh?"

"Not sure why, but he's been willing to give me a hand, even though we literally started out trying to kill each other." The no-nonsense way she said that brought a chill to the air, which was why Mayumi was glad she continued without another beat. "I get the sense that he'd try to pick me up before he tries to pick himself up."

"...Ikari-san does come across as quite selfless."

"Nah, I don't get that sense from him. It's more like...he wouldn't know what to do with himself if he didn't have us. We help give him purpose. Which is kind of crazy, given how much power he has at his fingertips."

Thinking back to all the various conversations she'd had with Ikari since June, Mayumi found herself agreeing. "I suppose you have a point..." Speaking of memories, "which brings me to another question: why exactly does Ikari-san still call you Kirishima-san? I thought you don't like that name."

"I don't," she flatly answered.

"So why?"

Mana gazed at the ceiling, meditating on the subject; her lips scrunched together into an adorable pout. "Not sure why. It just became a habit, I guess. Never bothered to correct him."

...I wonder...hmm. With a shrewd look, Mayumi asked, "If he were to call you by Mana-san, or Mana...how would you react?"

Mana, tellingly, looking somewhat unnerved by the idea...and was that a slight hint of red in her cheeks? "Like normal, I guess? It would feel kind of weird though...why are you smiling, all of a sudden?"

"Oh, it's nothing..." How cute!

As the conversation died down and Mana went to reading from the Featherman visual novel, Mayumi took the opportunity to open her one-on-one message log with Shinji Ikari and answer the question for herself.

M. Yamagishi: After thinking about the question, they all have some degree of importance.
M. Yamagishi: But if I had to pick the love that's most 'important'...I would have to go with romance.
M. Yamagishi: Because compared to the others, romance can be the most surprising of them all.
M. Yamagishi: That sort of unpredictability adds a variety to life that makes it...mesmerizing.

For some reason, the obvious crush between Toji Suzuhara and Hikari Horaki came to mind. Even if they were 'predictable', the knowledge of when they would finally admit it was not. I wonder who will confess first...? It was a safe and lighthearted thing to think about, far away from the darkness at the fringes of her life.

Thus did the two girls continue reading from their texts of choice: comrades forged in battle, adoptive sisters in the eyes of the law...but not yet sisters in truth and spirit...

"...well, based on everything that's happened and how we normally fight...Mana-san, Suzuhara-san..." He looked calmly at the Second Child. "...and Sohryu-san. You all should fight on the frontline."
There's no indication at the start of this paragraph that Shinji is the one speaking. It becomes obvious from context in later paragraphs, but it might make sense to Indicate more clearly.

Sokila was painting and drawing with a frenzied and joyous passion.

"It's been a long time since you met her..."

She was drawing pictures of Asuka Langley-Sohryu, all in the midst of fighting.

"...and she's still so COOL!"

Her smile was wide and genuine, yet her eyes glimmered with uncertainty.

"She seems...like a tough friend to make...but I'm sure you can do it!"

/Room 1, 2nd Floor, Izanami Dorms, Hakone Academy/

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQJMzFrcMcU

Asuka Langley-Sohryu woke up first, well before 7 AM. Hmm...first time I've slept in the same room with so many people in a while. Mercifully, Rei Ayanami slept like the dead, Hikari Horaki was near silent, and Mayumi Yamagishi — save for the occasional tossing and turning — was also a quiet sleeper. Huh. Not as bad as I thought it would be. The workings of her mind — her thoughts; her dreams; the voices that spoke to her, conjured from somewhere unknown — were still the loudest part of her room, so it was almost like nothing had changed from life at NERV-03.

(When she had returned from dinner the prior night — phasing back into reality outside the Izanami Dorms — she had all but ignored Hikari Horaki's attempts at communication, delving into the bathroom to take a shower. By the time she got out, both Mayumi and Rei had made it back; thus, she had felt no guilt in clambering onto her top bunk and going to sleep.)

Sure, she probably wasn't treating Hikari fairly...

Her Other arched an eyebrow.

"You definitely haven't. What has she done to earn your ire?"

...but compared to everything, dealing with school stuff was just so dull. The fact that the girl had seemed so intent on trying to make her 'fit in'...well, that didn't endear Hikari to Asuka. At all. Which isn't really her fault, but verdammt having to go to school is just such a drag. The longer she mulled over it, the more she was going to get irritated. I have to work off this stress. Get my mind in order...

The Beast weathered the roar of a mountain wind.

"The weight you've chosen to carry...how much does it define you?"

Asuka slowly sat up, grateful for the fact that the bunk beds were solidly constructed; they didn't sag or squeak with her movements, allowing her to quietly climb down without waking the others. Rei had the bottom bunk on the opposite side of the room, whilst Mayumi slept on the bunk above hers; this left Hikari Horaki to have the bed below Asuka's. With Hikari's hair loose from their usual pigtails, the freckled girl looked more mature than normal. Weird; you'd think she'd shoot for a more authoritative hairstyle if being the Class Rep is such a big deal. Maybe she's vain about looking youthful? Asuka shook her head, going for her designated drawers to find some clothes fit for jogging. Eh, I can psychoanalyze her later. She'll probably reveal more of who she is and save me the trouble of thinking too deeply.

(Such was the world of the Second Child: an Evangelion-user, primed for warfare against misanthropic paranormal entities; a geopolitical tool, constantly wondering at the motivations of those who had yet to earn her trust...)

(You'd prefer it if she just got the hint and stopped trying. It'd make things easier on you both...)

Unlike the last time she had gone on a morning run around the campus, Asuka — putting on a pair of sweatpants and a baggy sweater, because like hell was she going to wear that perverted gym uniform (bloomers! In this day and age! The nerve!) unless she absolutely had to — moved with an intent to get her workout in as quickly as possible, aiming for efficiency instead of leisure. Quietly binding her long hair into a simple ponytail with a hair tie, the Second Child quietly slipped out. There were only a few other girls moving about at this time of the morning, openly gazing at her as she moved by. I wonder if getting stared at like this will ever get old?

(Probably.)

Once she was outside, Asuka — inhaling deeply of the morning air, still warm despite the fact that the sun had yet to completely clear the Hakone caldera — stretched as she moved, loosening up with the aim of testing herself...that is, until her eyes were drawn to an unexpected individual. "Huh. Well if it isn't the Third Child."

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKMg-ujty70

Shinji Ikari, clad in a simple shirt and shorts, blinked owlishly at her. "Oh. Good morning, Sohryu-san."

Well, I suppose there are worse ways to start the day. The events of yesterday had at least cemented the fact he wasn't useless. (Even if the sheer variety of powers at his fingertips was completely unfair.) "Why are you up so early?"

"...I was about to go on a morning jog," he calmly replied, as if unsure as to why she had even asked.

Oh HO. Another opportunity to test their mettle. "Hmm. Guess you wouldn't be up for a race then. Eh? Wie klingt das?"

"I thought I told you before, I don't speak German-"

"Context clues, Third," she interrupted. "Sure, going on a jog is one thing, but I'm sure you're interested in getting revenge over how I beat you yesterday." Go for the ego, that should be an easy way to bait him-!

"Not...really?"

Asuka resisted the urge to deflate. "Seriously? Why not?!"

Shinji looked at her as though she were an idiot.

Her Other giggled.

"Careful not to project...Sister Mary and Director Kirijo did their utmost to stamp that out...

Asuka ignored the niggling sensation within her chest. "Well? I'd like an answer."

"...it was training. Everyone was trying to get better," he calmly replied. "Whether we won or lost, we all learned something...and that was the point, wasn't it?"

Asuka harrumphed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Oh, I'm sure you 'learned' plenty." Absentmindedly (or perhaps intentionally?), she shifted her arms under her chest. "For all your power, you're still just a simple boy, it seems..."

At this, Shinji's face actually flushed; whether it be from embarrassment or irritation or some combination thereof, the mere fact she had gotten under his skin was victory enough. "You were the one who pushed my face against your chest, you know..."

"Simple, yet still bold? I bet you're already thinking nasty thoughts..."

At this not-quite-an-accusation, he looked honestly perplexed. "Are...are you for real?"

(...not the response she was hoping for. You'd best wing it.) "Look we're both out on a morning run, so we might as well make it interesting! How about...loser buys breakfast?"

"Do we have to make it a competition?"

"I guess not...if you want to be boring."

"I mean...there's not really any stakes?" He scratched at the back of his head, looking a tad unsure. "Win or lose, I'd probably end up buying for us both anyhow..."

...damn it, he's got me there. How to respond without making it awkward? (Or without commenting on the fact he was acting chivalrously without apparently thinking about it?) "Hmm. Guess I'll just have to think of something appropriate after I beat you."

"...fine, whatever."

Score! "These Courtyards are pretty big...how about first one to complete a circuit wins?"

Gazing around the greenery and trees of the Academy grounds, Shinji replied, "That seems fair enough."

"Tch," grumbled Asuka, unimpressed by his utter lack of enthusiasm. "You could stand to be a bit more into this."

"I'm really not. You're the one making this into a contest, not me..." Tilting his head, he honestly asked, "Does it really matter?"

"If you're not winning, you're losing," she quipped, leaning her leg forward in preparation to run. "Are you ready? Set..." Sighing, Shinji seemed to reluctantly mirror her position, looking ahead with steadfast eyes. "...GO!"

And then they were off: not going full tilt yet, but still running at a pretty brisk pace.

Annoyingly, Shinji Ikari kept up without much in the way of apparent difficulty. Even out of the corner of her eye, she could see the intense focus on his face. So there IS a competitive streak in there somewhere, she thought, grinning to herself. I'll drag it out somehow, if it's the last thing I do!

(At this point, the exact motivations for this course of action had utterly escaped her...and she wouldn't be able to articulate them even if asked.)

xx

As for Shinji? He would ultimately lose the race, flagging near the end as his stamina ran out on him; regardless of his skills, Asuka had the undeniable edge in physical conditioning. It was only obvious, given that she had been fighting for years, and he for only a matter of months.

(Even so...the strangely competitive air in which he had raced against her...had been quite invigorating...incredibly so, turning his morning from vibrant to downright dynamic...!)

And of course dealing Asuka boosts Vigor.
Looks like she wants competition, either as peers or to "win" against.

My perverted mind sees her looking for someone to "defeat and claim" her like a stereotypical caveman, since that is her kink.

What Asuka just thought about Hikari in this chapter will most definitely have consequences. I predict it will go something like this.

-Asuka and Hikari will have an argument about Asuka's attitude towards school. In a reference to Persona 5, Asuka will end the argument with something like this. "My only priority is doing my job of keeping humanity safe. You're useless towards me"!

-That would undoubtedly send Hikari over the edge, to the point her heart become distorted. My guess is Hikari would become like one of the monarchs from Persona 5 Strikers. One that is obsessed with enforcing the school rules.

Fortunately, the impromptu race had resulted in Shinji and Asuka ending up near LeNoir Café; as far as breakfasts went, it was one that the redhead had no complaints about. "Even if it's French decor, it's as European a place as I've seen since arriving in this country." After they each ordered a cup of the morning roast, as well as their respective breakfasts — Shinji opted for the omurice special, whilst Asuka settled for a hearty sandwich slathered with meat, eggs, and cheese — they sat back and simply...absorbed the atmosphere, listening to the song of a woman play over tinny speakers. "People come and they go...some people may stay with you though..."

xxxx

Another place. Another time. Somewhere...far removed, yet not at all.

"I think I'll recommend this restaurant. The food is great!"

Circumstances dictated that the food was his own, cooked by his own hands; he had simply brought it from...home.

It was strange, to think of how a place so fragile could still be called 'home'...even amidst unimaginable hardship(?)...

xxxx

Eventually, the spell was broken, as Asuka spoke. "So. You've been an Evangelion-user for what? A little over three months, now?" Leaning back in her chair, she asked, "How has it been treating you?"

Shinji, folding his hands together on the table, thought seriously about the question. "...I would be lying if I said it was all positives." Physical pain, emotional turmoil, fallen comrades, and stakes that truly could have been called earth-shattering. "But...there have been good things, too." The relationships that only existed because of his status as an Evangelion-user; the friendships he had forged; that, in spite of everything, he was becoming a better person...hopefully. "It depends on the day I get asked, I think..."

"...fair enough. I'd have called you a baka for saying everything was all positive, and I'd have called you a Dummkopf if you'd said there had been nothing good about being in your position." Sipping at her mug, the girl remarked, "Still...your attitude's not what I expected."

"Too hesitant?" he offered.

"No. Too laidback." In response to his palpable shock, she elaborated. "You probably got the whole spiel when you first manifested, right? About how the Marduk Institute has scanned millions and millions of people to determine compatibility with Project E." Grinning darkly, she remarked, "Honestly, it had been so long where it was just me and First, I never thought they'd find a Third Child...and then it turns out that the son of Gendo Ikari is the one...yet it took until 2015 to discover you?"

...she has a point. Were it not for how complicated everything with his father was, it might have occurred to him sooner. "I...honestly didn't think of that. I've been busy with...other things."

"Clearly," she grumbled, looking somewhat unimpressed. "Given how you can somehow use more than one Persona, I'm not surprised. But still...the First, when she summons an Evangelion, calls it Zerogoki: Unit-00. When I summoned mine for the first time, I called it Nigoki: Unit-02. You'd think I would have called it Unit-01, but no; it didn't feel proper, like Nigoki did. And then, years later, you come along...and you call it Shogoki: Unit-01. A similar naming scheme, similar powers, similar appearances...and we called them that without prompting. Weird, isn't it?"

...it IS weird. "You've thought a lot about this, Sohryu-san."

Asuka shrugged. "The world prizes me for my Evangelion. It'd be weird if I didn't think about it." Her lips briefly twitched, as though a stray thought came to mind. "Heard you gave Sister Mary an assist on Sunday, by the way."

"Oh. Yes. It was a coincidence...but she seemed pretty strong."

"She is," Asuka begrudgingly admitted. "As strong as she is annoying. But...eh, never mind."

"What is it?"

Asuka's response was unexpected. "Interested in my past? Wanting to dig into all the juicy bits, hm? What a surprising gossip you are," she added, speaking with an amused grin.

...eh? How was that her take? "Not at all. I don't really pry into other people's business if I can help it...it's rude, for one. And some people...just don't want to talk about stuff that's so private." (After all, he certainly was no shining paragon on that regard.)

For some reason, his response seemed to annoy her. "And I'm sure you know nothing about your little 'buddy squad.' Is that what you're trying to tell me?"

"...we all went through a lot, Sohryu-san. I didn't set out to try and find out everything about Kensuke Aida, Toji Suzuhara, Mana Kirishima, Mayumi Yamagishi, or Rei Ayanami...but everything I do know about them? It only occurred after we became closer with each other...and even then, it wasn't all at once. And not all of it was expected, either..."

"And yet here you are, trying to find out more about me."

Was she trying to be difficult? "Well...would it really be a bad thing? We're comrades. Allies. And if we became friends...wouldn't that be better?"

Asuka arched an eyebrow, as if trying to take his measure. "So you're saying it would be convenient?"

Another place. Another time. Somewhere...that felt more innocent, paradoxically.

A brunette with a fiery personality (Asuka?) looked upon a blunette with an icy disposition (Rei?). "-let's be good friends!"

Rei quietly looked back at her book. "What for?"

"Because, it would be
convenient. You know what I mean!"

"If I'm ordered to, I will do it."

"Ooh...freaka
zoid..."

The redhead's voice somehow carried far enough for three boys (Kensuke, Toji, and...himself...?) to hear from atop an overpass. "It takes one to know one," grumbled Toji. "I wonder if only weirdos are chosen to be Eva Pilots?"

Eva...'Pilots'...?

Shinji ignored the strange sensation in the back of his mind, both heavy and light. "Friendship isn't about convenience," he said. "Because my friendships...they've been a lot of things. Convenient is not the first word I'd think of."

"Is that so?"

"I mean...when you think of Makinami-san, does 'convenience' come to your mind?"

The girl's nose curdled, eyes narrowing with...suspicion? No, not quite suspicion; it was something akin to reevaluation. "...you're strange, Third."

"I'm strange?" he impulsively retorted.

"Oi, what are you implying?!" she growled.

"...maybe we should start over," he said, if only for diplomacy's sake. "I'm Shinji Ikari; is there a reason we can't be friends?"

Asuka rolled her eyes. "Too corny. First impressions don't get a do-over...and I can think of plenty of reasons why we can't, or shouldn't be friends. And yet...it would certainly be convenient." With a strange grin — confident, self-assured, cocky, challenging — she held her hand forward. "Let's shake on it."

What's with her? Even so, he nonetheless reached out, taking her hand in his own; her grip was surprisingly strong as they sealed the deal.

And all the while, on a subconscious level, in words he had no way of knowing...a voice — still different, yet oddly familiar — spoke, within the depths of his being:

Thou art I, and I am thou...
Thou hast witnessed this potential before.

The seas of depravity are vast;
yet the truth can be found with certitude.

The Arcana is the means by which
all is revealed...now is the appointed time.

This bond shall now be revealed...

This time, the voice spoke with a more familiar cadence:

I am thou, thou art I...
Thou hast acquired a new bond.

It shall lead thou to the truth
that parts the seas of depravity.

Take hold of the Lovers Arcana,
and let it guide you
to a new Promised Land...

As Shinji removed his hand from hers — strangely slow, yet all too quickly — their breakfasts arrived. "Good timing," he mused to himself.

"Finally, I was starving," she remarked, briefly appreciating the visible caloric density of her sandwich before taking a measured bite.

...you're an exhausting person to be around, Asuka, he thought inwardly. (Yet why did that seem so fitting...?)

xx

As Asuka ate her breakfast, she quietly kept the Third Child in her peripheral vision at all times. You're an oddity, Third, she mentally observed. (And yet, could it have been any other way...?)

/some of you might remember this scene from the original anime

with this the regular Greater Arcana-set is complete
or have I missed one

No. Barring the World, I think that's all of them. Unless a non-standard arcana like the Councillor or the Apostle appears.

It was already confirmed by the Velvet Room peeps that Shinji had only two left to unlock...those two being Temperance and Lovers: Shin Persona Evangelion [NGE/Persona Fusion] Crossover

/and then Shinji unlocked them over the next two days

Due to this scene and music, I now imagine Asuka and Shinji going to a Jazz club like the one from Persona 5 Royal.

Clearly, a trip to Jazz Jingisukan lies in their future!

Akechi: Get out, this is my private getaway!

Shinji: ...aren't you relocating to Kyoto, though?

Akechi: curses!

Asuka: Tch. Drama queen.

Akechi: Oh, like you're one to talk-

Ren: *from far in the distance* Drama queen~!

Akechi: OH DON'T YOU START-!

Ren: DRAMA QUEEEEEEN~!

I guess the question now is which social links will Shinji be able to max out? We've been generally treating this like it was an actual persona game in our discussions and the only way someone could max out all social links on their first play through is either getting really lucky or looking up a guide beforehand.

The obvious focus would be on teammates first, but some like Misato's definitely feel time-sensitive.
