Beware uncharted lands, for there be spoilers afoot!
This may seem like it's overdue, but based on a comment I recently received elsewhere, apparently the fact that there will be spoilers to both the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime and the events of various games in the Persona Series (including but not limited to Persona 3, Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4, and Persona 5) wasn't made clear just by how the plot has unveiled.

So I'm placing a sticky post for this message: if you have not watched the original Evangelion anime, or if you have not played the Persona games — especially P3, P4, P5, and their updated re-releases — then take note that this story contains spoilers to all of them. Read at your own risk.

Excuse me if this was shown before or something but I just found this really wholesome to me.

With Billy Kametz having been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, the Persona series artist and illustrstor, Shigenori Soejima drew this to support him.

idk i just found it wholesome that a persona series staff is wishing well for an english voice actor for a persona character
I wish Billy "I am Ferdinand von Aegir" Kametz well too.

Unfortunately, Stage 4 cancer is...difficult to conquer.

Billy Kametz has passed away as of June 9th; his funeral Mass will be held on June 18th at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Middletown, PA.

Link to his obituary.

Eternal rest grant unto Billy Kametz, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

/also
//I legit did not know that Erica Lindbeck was his girlfriend
///which makes the Takuto x Futaba pairing in this story rather appropriate in hindsight

Oh.
How appropriate timing.
I...I literally just learned about his death two (well more than that as it's taking time to type this) minutes ago.
And I didn't expect to cry.
Honestly kinda still am.
Came here to tell about his death.

And don't really don't know what else to say.

I mean a part of me should say "may he rest in peace" and I do wish that.
But I feel like not really saying that since it doesn't feel genuine/straight from my heart on my part.

So.
Just.
Gonna say.
Instead.

Thank you Billy Kametz for all the voices you've done until then, both the ones I've heard and the ones that I haven't. Takuto Maruki wouldn't have been the same without you behind him.

Art(?): DALL-E mini part 2
Maybe not enough pictures of her around to train the AI?

I'm more surprised that it thinks Hamlet looks just like Shinji again. But I guess it kinda fits the whole "I am thou, thou art I" :p

Maybe it's just been an Akagi in general, because even Ritsuko had a lot of variations. (Although DALL-E for some reason went for a really stylized approach on these that make them look like old Japanese art, which is strangely inspired...?)

9/1 - Early Morning
Sokila looked at her newest painting with a critical eye.

"...from a desert king...to a sailor on the sea...?"

It depicted Kensuke Aida being thrown by Ozymandias onto a boat, where Sinbad was commanding the wheel.

"...it feels like it should make more sense..."

Lavenza stepped to her side, gazing stoically at the picture. "In what way?"

"Well...shouldn't it be someone else from that desert land? 'Eee-jip-it', right?"

"Egypt."

"That place!"

Lavenza remarked, "The form that one's Persona takes is not limited to such restrictions as consistent mythologies; my Trickster and his fellow Phantom Thieves were very similar in that regard. It took the form that closely corresponded to the newfound understanding of his Other Self: that's all." Pointing upward with her index finger, she added, "As my older sister Elizabeth once put it: 'mythological theming is more of a guideline than an actual rule; such a restraint can get stuffed!'"

"Really?"

"Well, I think she said she got the idea from a pirate movie she watched once..."

Sokila, suddenly inspired by this, began painting a pirate hat onto Sinbad's head. "Gotcha!"

Lavenza blinked slowly. "...I don't believe that's quite the lesson to take from that..."

The faint haze of blue began to brighten-

PILATE: YOUR WEEK IS UP
PILATE: DO YOU HAVE AN ANSWER?

Shinji Ikari had woken up that morning to that message from PILATE. Without waking any of his roommates up, he had gone to LeNoir so as to procure coffee, breakfast, and a chance to think about the prior question in a place with pleasant music. Scrolling once more through his message log, Shinji pondered the relevant parts of PILATE's question:

PILATE: IMAGINE IF ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE WERE DISPLAYED FOR PEOPLE TO WATCH: AKIN TO A TELEVISION SHOW, OR PERHAPS A SERIES OF MOVIES.
PILATE: EACH MOVIE DISPLAYS A DISTORTED VISION OF EVENTS FROM YOUR PAST, EMPHASIZING A CONSISTENT MESSAGE:
PILATE: "DISCARD INDIVIDUALITY. CONFORM WITH THE GROUP. STANDING OUT WILL ONLY GUARANTEE PAIN. OBEY YOUR SUPERIOR IN ALL THINGS, NO MATTER WHO IT IS."
PILATE: CHANGING THESE MOVIES TO REMOVE THE DISTORTED VISIONS WOULD GIVE A 'HAPPY ENDING', SO TO SPEAK—
PILATE: A VISION OF THE TRUTH, WITHOUT EMBELLISHMENT: VICE AND VIRTUE TOGETHER, WITH ALL OF YOUR BLEMISHES.
PILATE: WITHOUT REMOVING THESE DISTORTIONS, YOU WOULD BE FORCED TO OBEY THE MORAL MESSAGE AS IT STANDS.
PILATE: ONLY BY REMOVING THE DISTORTIONS CAN YOU BE FREE TO 'BE YOURSELF.'
...
PILATE: NOW, YOU MIGHT DISAGREE WITH THE MORAL MESSAGE OF THE DISTORTED FILMS, BUT THERE IS A CAVEAT
PILATE: HIDDEN BY DISTORTIONS, YOUR LIFE IS LARGELY INVISIBLE TO THE MASSES: THEY HAVE NO MEANS OF KNOWING THAT THE FILMS ARE DEPICTING 'YOU.' IT WOULD BE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VIEWING A FICTIONAL 'BASED ON A TRUE STORY' FILM...AND A BIOGRAPHICAL DOCUMENTARY.
PILATE: BUT IF YOU REMOVE THOSE DISTORTIONS, EVERYONE WILL SEE THOSE EVENTS IN YOUR LIFE FOR WHAT THEY ARE. THEY WILL *KNOW* ABOUT YOU, IN ALL THE MOST INTIMATE DETAILS.
PILATE: NOT JUST STRANGERS...BUT FRIENDS. FAMILY. THOSE YOU ARE CLOSE TO.
PILATE: THEY WOULD SEE THE THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF THAT YOU WOULD BE ASHAMED TO ADMIT.
...
PILATE: THINK OF THE EVENTS IN YOUR PAST THAT FILL YOU WITH REMORSE AND SHAME, EVEN TO THIS DAY.
PILATE: THINK ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT YOU WOULD BE COMFORTABLE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU HOLD IN THE HIGHEST ESTEEM
PILATE: KNOWING ABOUT SUCH...INTIMATE HISTORY
PILATE: CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING JUDGED BY THE MASSES
PILATE: IS YOUR DESIRE TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON ABLE TO HANDLE SUCH A WEIGHT?
PILATE: OR WOULD YOU SETTLE FOR THE COMFORT OF CONFORMITY, AT THE EXPENSE OF YOUR INDIVIDUALITY?
PILATE: AFTER ALL...IT CERTAINLY WOULDN'T 'HURT' AS MUCH.

Relative to events from the past week, he had gained additional context regarding this scenario (even if he wasn't quite ready to answer HEROD's question about love)...particularly from Kensuke's 'Second Awakening' yesterday, when Ozymandias had transformed into Sinbad.

So, with the text-to-speech function on, he slowly made his answer known: "As someone who knows about the private problems of other people...as someone whose own problems are also known by many of those same people...I've come to realize that learning about these problems has allowed all of us to grow in ways we wouldn't have anticipated. Even if it was difficult, at first..." Especially because it had been difficult. "And honestly...I kind of like the person I'm becoming as a result of that...even if it's hard at times. And I think my friends like who they're becoming as well...so even if the masses would know more about the things I'm not proud of...and even if they hated me for it..." Because it wasn't like he was unfamiliar with that prospect either, given the animus against Evangelion-users by the student body at large. "...I think I'd be able to handle it...if only because I wouldn't be alone. So I would remove those distortions...fight for my 'happy ending'...and be the me I want to be."

Now it was just a matter of waiting for PILATE's inevitable counter.

It didn't take long.

PILATE: CURIOUS
PILATE: DO YOU TRULY THINK YOU COULD STOMACH THE IRE OF OTHERS?
PILATE: KNOWING THAT IN YOUR RAGE, YOU NEARLY MURDERED MANA KIRISHIMA? THAT IN YOUR DEEPEST THOUGHTS, YOU STRUGGLE WITH THE VOICE OF A RAVENOUS BEAST, AND ITS WICKED TEMPTATIONS?

Shinji's eyes widened, even as his fingers impulsively typed a response.

S. Ikari: how do you know that?
PILATE: YOU'D BE SURPRISED AT WHAT WE KNOW. DON'T CHANGE THE SUBJECT.
PILATE: THINK OF THOSE VOICES THAT WHISPER IN THE DEPTHS OF YOUR MIND...WOULD YOU BE COMFORTABLE LETTING SUCH A TRUTH BE KNOWN TO THE WORLD?

...okay, that'll take a bit more time...

The Other and the Beast were both silent.

Gathering his thoughts together after a full minute of introspection, he hesitantly responded, "Well...most people probably would have a bad opinion of me...but...I think I might be able to handle it..."

PILATE: NOT A LOT OF CONFIDENCE, HMM?

"It's hard to think about a hypothetical like that...there's no telling how many different reactions there would be..."

PILATE: AND YET YOU STILL THINK YOU WOULD DEFER TO THE SIDE OF STANDING AS AN INDIVIDUAL, AGAINST THE TIDE?
PILATE: YOUR PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE INDICATES A LIKELIHOOD OF OVER 65% THAT YOU WOULD SETTLE FOR THE COMFORT OF CONFORMITY AMIDST ANONYMITY.
S. Ikari: how do you know that
PILATE: YOU LACK THE EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND TO UNDERSTAND THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS INVOLVED.

...I guess that's fair enough. Still, Shinji found himself feeling a bit...dogged. "...but I think with my friends...I'd be able to make it."

PILATE: AND IF YOU WERE ALONE?

"...but I'm not alone." For several seconds, there was no response.

PILATE: THAT IS FAIR ENOUGH.
PILATE: YOU SEEM TO HAVE BECOME MORE COGNIZANT OF YOUR OWN CHANGES, IN LIGHT OF THE CHOICES MADE BY YOURSELF AND THOSE AROUND YOU.
PILATE: CLEARLY, YOU AREN'T CLAIMING THAT THE REACTION OF THE MASSES WOULD BE 'EASY' TO DEAL WITH
PILATE: BUT YOU SEEM TO CONSIDER IT AN OBSTACLE WORTH DEALING WITH, IN LIGHT OF THE OTHER ADVANTAGES
PILATE: A SORT OF BENIGN SELFISHNESS, COMBINED WITH A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL SYMBIOSIS
PILATE: PREFERABLE TO THE NUMBNESS OF APATHY, IT WOULD SEEM.
PILATE: YET ANOTHER PARALLEL TO OUR PRIOR SIMULATION. HOW AMUSING.

Shinji blinked. Huh?

S. Ikari: what simulation?
PILATE: NEVER YOU MIND
PILATE: THIS RESPONSE IS ACCEPTABLE ENOUGH.
PILATE: A WILLINGNESS TO ENDURE PAIN FOR THE SAKE OF A DESIRED GOAL IS THE HALLMARK OF DISCIPLINE. DELAYED GRATIFICATION, IF YOU WILL.
PILATE: ONE LAST POST-SCRIPT. YOUR RESPONSE IS MOSTLY GEARED TOWARDS THE NAMELESS MASSES.
PILATE: HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOUR FATHER KNEW OF THE BEAST?

"...well..." He honestly wondered how Gendo Ikari would react. Though...given how he's been to me...and given what else he knows...? "I think...he would feel satisfied, for some reason...I wish I knew why..."

PILATE: AH, BUT OF COURSE
PILATE: HIS ANIMUS FOR YOU IS NO SECRET
PILATE: AND IF HE WERE TO REALIZE WHAT TEMPTATIONS WAR WITHIN YOU...WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE SENSE OF VALIDATION HE WOULD FEEL.
PILATE: TIME WILL TELL IF YOU CAN PROVE HIM WRONG.
PILATE: END OF LINE

And just like that, the conversation was over. "...I wish I knew why you were asking these questions," murmured Shinji. How exactly are they helping me realize my place in the world...? The thought of his father felt particularly distasteful at the moment, so he opted for opening the Mission Board to take care of some Ghost subjugation assignments.

(The fact that Dr. Akagi was inevitably going to run a lot of testing on Kensuke Aida because of his Second Awakening...had nothing to do with his decision. Really.)

(Besides, it's not like you need to be at NERV for anything truly important...)

xxxx

/Gendo Ikari's Office, NERV/

"Seriously, is there a reason you keep your office so dark?!"

"Miss Sohryu-"

"No, it's a legitimate point!"

Gendo Ikari wordlessly huffed behind his hands before replying, "Personal preference, nothing more." With the monitors' light reflecting off of his glasses, Commander Ikari's eyes were invisible to Asuka Langley-Sohryu, who stood at attention within the dim confines of his office; Sister Mary Makinami stood behind and to her left, serving as a comforting presence within the man's strangely (and needlessly) intimidating workspace. "Allow me to extend a welcome to you both on behalf of the country of Japan."

I am confused why they went with P3P instead of FES. Atlus recognizing FemC's existence is nice but it's essentially a VN with the occasional fight.

The optimist in me is hoping that it's because they're going for a full remake of FES and Golden. They have the funds and the models from the dancing games.

Part of it likely has to do with how strongly Atlus has been promoting FemC for the recent anniversary, as well as just how popular she is among fans.
Another is probably how much of a mess FES's code is compared to how simple P3P is, as described here: https://twitter.com/BreckinMathias/status/1536056383765889025?s=20&t=Wdy5CYp-QQYaDptIX_rdEg
As cool as it would be to get a new enhanced port of P3 (and there's no way they aren't considering a full-on remake), remastering Portable was probably just the cheapest and quickest option to get it onto Game Pass/PC.

Probably because P3P is more streamlined and better optimized compared to the PS2 version.

The performance aspects of that should be hilariously irrelevant on modern hardware :)
You're right, but I think Atlus just took the easier way out with this port. Rather than just port the version with more content but more complicated gameplay, they elected to just port the version that is simpler to play and has more QoL changes. They could not be bothered to spend time doing the same changes with the FES version.

In regards to the questions the Magi keep asking Shinji will have a Big impact on the last battle. Something similar happened in the the story of SRW 30.

9/1 - Morning
Asuka resisted the urge to be snarky at the Commander of NERV, despite the fact that they'd woken up less than an hour ago to leave Nagoya (finally, that arbitrary restriction on you teleporting with the power of Evangelion is GONE). Mostly because being snarky at Mitsuru Kirijo's superior would be a bad idea. "The pleasure's ours," calmly remarked Asuka. (But damnation, why couldn't this guy turn his lights on?!) "After being on an airliner for so long, I'm ready to get to work."

"So eager, are we?"

"Am I that transparent? Being an Evangelion-user and fighting supernatural monsters is kinda my thing."

Gendo's lips quirked into a smirk. "I suppose so. I trust you won't mind the fact that you're scheduled for a meeting with the principal of Hakone Academy tomorrow?"

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIrj80SdLUs

Asuka's expression immediately crashed into a flat stare. "...come again?"

"Part of the reason why we insist upon the First and Third Children attending school is in accordance with the Cognitive Service Act; per the terms of your contract with NERV, you are subject to the provisions of your host country's laws when it comes to matters affecting child soldiers. As far as I'm aware, Germany was not as strict with regards to mandatory schooling if the child in question was testing on a level commensurate with their peers."

Mari nodded, speaking for Asuka. "That is correct, sir. Miss Sohryu's always been the intelligent sort; Director Kirijo believed it a more efficient course to let her pursue schooling...independently."

More like I didn't have any patience for morons, she inwardly griped.

(In past years, there would be certain periods of time where she would undergo educational instruction on particular topics, usually under the tutelage of a private tutor hired by Mitsuru, or by Sister Mary Makinami herself. As time went on, she would take her chances to read ahead of her grade level's curriculum, if only so as to keep ahead of the curve. It allowed her to spend most of her time on missions...which suited her just fine. Dealing with kids was just a waste of time.)

Her Other sighed.

"Judging other children by your baseline is hardly fair. A genius can't judge average people as if they were stupid...because they're not. They're simply average."

Asuka's internal musing was interrupted by Gendo. "Be that as it may, Japan is not as lenient: the benefits of schooling with regards to the promotion of social harmony are still deemed a necessity, which is why Rei Ayanami and Shinji Ikari still attend...notwithstanding the reality that the Academy is quite tolerant of their situation whenever duty calls."

"I'm just a foreigner," she griped, her Japanese bearing a particular accent. "I'm sure I'll be more of a distraction for a bunch of horny teenagers, so I'm gonna be a net negative on any sort of 'social harmony.'"

Sister Mary lightly bopped her on the top of the head. "Now now: pride goeth before a fall."

"You know I'm right," griped Asuka.

"Leaving aside your exceptional opinion of your own appearance," What kind of crack is that?! "it is a matter that's nonnegotiable. Principal Lorenz is already aware of your situation, and will be expecting you tomorrow at 9:00 AM."

The particular surname caught her ears. "The Academy's principal is German?"

"Indeed. Keel Lorenz's office is located in the Junior High Branch, but he has authority over the entire Academy as its founder. You might find him to be a...kindred spirit, of sorts."

Asuka narrowed her eyes, unsure if the man was complimenting her, being prejudiced (because clearly all Germans are the same!), or subtly insulting her. "...we'll see. In the meantime...I feel like stretching my legs. Is there any particular part of the mainland where I can do some good?"

Commander Ikari glanced towards his left monitor, briefly fiddling with his mouse; in his orange shades, she could see the reflection of a map of Japan, laden with angry red dots. "The First Child is currently in Hokkaido, and the Third Child is apparently working on some missions north of Kyoto...so perhaps it would be best for you to focus on missions on the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu."

"That I can do," she said, whipping out her phone. "What are we doing about accommodations in the meantime?"

"I'm certain Principal Lorenz will have an appropriate dorm set aside for you; free room and board at the Academy is provided. As for your assistant..." Gendo trailed off, looking towards the religious.

Sister Mary said, "As part of my transfer, my superior negotiated with the pastor of the local parish; there is a private residence on the church grounds that used to host a small group of Carmelites before they ran afoul of Angel Syndrome last year." With a sober tone, she added, "Since then, it's only been used for storage...so I'll certainly have plenty of duties to occupy my time in the interim, between helping Miss Sohryu."

"Then I suppose you both have the rest of your day planned, then," coolly remarked Gendo. "You're dismissed, Sohryu."

FINALLY, inwardly grumbled Asuka, as she outwardly nodded before turning towards Sister Mary. "Call me if anything comes up."

"Stay safe, Miss Sohryu. If you need my assistance, don't hesitate to call me," said the religious, her silhouette barely illuminated by the ambient light cast by Gendo Ikari's computer monitors. It lent an unnerving effect that only heightened Asuka's willingness to leave.

Seriously, why not turn on the lights...?

(The strange oppressiveness finally faded as she warped away...)

xx

As Asuka faded into static before vanishing, Sister Mary turned a critical eye towards Gendo Ikari, whose reputation truly preceded him. "If I may be so bold, sir...too much darkness is bad for the eyes...and for the soul, as well."

Instead of answering as she expected — with a quip; by brushing it off; or even simply dismissing her — he cryptically answered, "If you saw me in the light of day, Makinami...I doubt you'd find me an agreeable sort."

Mari narrowed her eyes.

Then, to her horror, his lips pulled back into a toothy smile that was...sickeningly normal, yet brined with so much wicked delight that it made her recoil on a spiritual level. "Then again, if all of our faults were placed on a pedestal, for all to see...then what man alive would be deemed without sin? Do you not agree?"

"...I won't trouble you any further, Commander Ikari. May you have a blessed day." Bowing slightly, she turned on her heel, leaving the dark office behind...and, more importantly, resolving to never let Asuka be alone with him if she could help it. (The fear of base carnal desires emerging from the man didn't enter into her mind whatsoever as a possible threat.)

(No...there's a unique malice in that man...and no child deserves to face it alone.)

A good Catholic never damns anyone to Hell.

That's between them and the Lord God.

Particularly because they should want (in principle) said individual to repent so as to attain to eternal salvation instead of eternal damnation.

But in general, wishing damnation upon someone would be a species of the sin of hatred, and would also be an example of the sin of cursing (in the old sense of the word "curse", which is, in general, "the speaking of evil for some person or thing, that is, in order that the evil spoken may befall him or it." Note that this also utilizes a broader meaning of 'evil' as well, in the sense of not just moral evils, but anything that can cause injury or harm); in both instances, such an act is opposed to the virtue of charity.

Art: Asuka and Matilda (Commission by Renu)
It's been a very long time coming, but since Asuka's finally arrived in Japan...well, it felt appropriate for her to finally get some time in the artistic spotlight.

So, courtesy of @Renu, here's Asuka in her Metaverse get-up, with her Persona: Matilda!

Just as a brief reminder, her left eye is perfectly functional under the eyepatch:

July 8th of 2015 said:
As the Second Child led the Third into the bowels of the Georgia Dome - its interior closely corresponding to the real world, enforced by the MAGI - she asked, "but seriously, why a shovel?"

"I told you already, I don't know! I mean, why do you have an eyepatch?"

"Wow, such a rude and OFFENSIVE boy, asking a lady about a crippling injury."

"...you flipped your eyepatch open to glare at me. With both eyes."

"..."

"You're doing it right now!"

"Whatever." With a haughty huff, she flipped her eyepatch back down.

"...you don't know, do you?"

DragonUnitOmega analyzes SPE: 7/30
All right!

It is time...

...for another full week of Dragon Reviews and (Probably) Overanalyzes SPE!

Well okay maybe minus one day...but still! Gonna be spending this week reading and reviewing SPE and sneak in writing some refraction if i'm not too tired. And I'm all ready for it! Got mt FEELS cap and review glasses all ready.

So enough with the preamble! Here's the thirty seventh installment of Dragon Reviews and (Probably) Overanalyzes SPE. -puts on review glasses and FEELS cap- Review. STARTO!

7/30 Early Morning - Evening, Part 2

We start off with a brief but heartwaeming scene of Sokila getting her two-headed dog! Yay! Before we get Shinji actually awake and having been invited by...Rei! To a nice little café. Of course, Shinji is wondering why, much like myself, but before Rei answers, she instead talks about how his thoughts seem different and...

"...your thoughts...they have a different flavor, to them," she murmured. "The core is still there...but there are subtle yet numerous changes to the accidents..."

...
-looks at dictionary-
...okay, unless my brain is doing a brain fart again from not understanding the sentence, I think this is an error. I feel like that should've been "accents" or something...

Anyways, she was referring to his Personas, as Shinji's flashback so obviously shows. It gets a little awkward for a bit but hey that's what you get when you're dealing with things even those used to weird find weird.

A digression first though.

A lot of fusions with Matador here. A good choice considering how OP he is, at least in SMT 3.
The meme-worthy difficulty of Matador from SMT 3 is not present in Persona; for example, you only need to be level 17 to fuse Matador in P5R. I would say he belongs to the lower mid-tier Personas.

I don't know how useful he is in P5R (yet?) since I heard they nerfed Swift Strike in Royal, but in P5 I'd say he's plenty useful and good for when you can get him, even if he's actually higher leveled than in P5R (he's Level 19 in P5). He was my MVP along with Orobas during the Madarame fight thanks to his innate Swift Strike, plus the ingredients I used to make him adding other useful skills on top of it. Was able to quickly get rid of the painting bits of Madarame, two-shotting him at full health and one-shotting at "revival health", with only needing the rest to get rid of the "Absorb Phys" painting left.

Speaking of digressions, Rei and Shinji's conversation has another brief one when the former mentions about the latter's trip, which has Shinji have spiralling thoughts (ouch ouch ouch i know the feeling) that he manages to hold back and instead invite Rei to the trip. She can't, though Shinji doesn't quite believe her but she just points out that the nature of the Wild Card gets stronger with bonding with friends. But that makes him want her to come, since they're friends too, or at least he considers her his. That's when Rei actually get to reason why she called him: the revelation (heh) he had with Marie backstory dumping on him. He begins talking about it only for Rei to stop him. One, because of pErFuMe, and two, because with everything that happened it's not exactly something she can easily talk about even without someone watching their moves. And she knows all this because she was "born" of the Metaverse.

Which well a part of me is wondering how much of the truth that is. Not saying she's lying. Just sayin' that I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to that.

Either way, Shinji once again wonders (rather reasonably) why is he the linchpin. But he still has a journey to go through. Can't rush this kind of thing. But he will get there. Rei believes that. Shinji can't quite get why she would believe that. He doesn't have much in way of qualifications. If that was all that was needed, then he wouldn't have been picked though. And besides, Rei truly believes in him. She has "faith in him".

"...but do you have faith in yourself?" he honestly asked.

That question turns out to be armor piercing as Rei clams up and leaves, where...

...we get a flashback.

Of her as LILITH.

Talking to Naoya Todou.

Naoya. Toudou.

And she gives him the power of the A. T. Field.

Before we go back to the present.

With a Rei holding back any form of grieving. Why? Because:

That was all she allowed herself. Anything more...would be spitting on their faces.

(For how could one who had failed so horribly even allow herself the reprieve of grief?)

(You don't have the right to cry for them...no matter how badly you want to.)

That's why.

NAOYA'S FUCKING TIMELINE GOT FUCKING DELETED DIDN'T IT HUH?
IT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE
ALONG WITH ALL HIS FRIENDS
AND LIKELY ALL THE PERSONA 2 CAST
AND THE TWO GAMES' POPULATIONS
HUH?
AND THAT'S WHY REI'S GRIEVING
BECAUSE EVEN WHEN (if?) EVERYTHING IS FIXED
THOSE SOULS CAN'T BE BROUGHT BACK.
BECAUSE OF COURSE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.
honestly i'm not that surprised
idk maybe i'm more drained from the butterfly effect than i thought
I mean I could be very wrong on what happened to Naoya's timeline and souls, but that's what I'm gonna assume with the bit given to me.
BECAUSE HEY WHY NOT JUST ASSUME THE WORST 'EY???

/oh snap
//THAT AIN'T PHILEMON
///WHAT AM I GONNA DO NEXT IN THIS WACKY CROSSOVER

If you're gonna continue this wackiness, then I ask you to make Teddie badass. And have Demon Painter (or some sort of successor of his) join in on Velvet Room shenanigans. Maybe as Sokila's drawing mentor or something. I mean, come on, can you imagine the hijinks and explosions from Sokila's paintings coming to life?

Anyways.

More speculation on Perfume's identity!

P1 was... weird like that. Social Links didn't become a thing until 3, the Arcana was just the classification method. And the P1 protag was the blankest canvas possible, I can easily see them slipping...

On one hand, yeah, any human could easily slip. And Naoya's Arcana is Emperor which, reversed, can mean trying too hard to control everything and not using the authority they were granted reaponsibly. Which, well, what Perfume seems to be doing.
But I refuse to believe it's Naoya for two reasons.
One: more personally and nothing really to do with info I have noticed and that have been presented to us, is that I do NOT want Naoya as Perfume. Because I fucking hate the tHiiIiiIiIiIiiing.
Two: Rei seems to be grieving for Naoya. Now you could argue that could mean "the Naoya she knew died" and ended up as Perfume, but atm I'mma just assume it's because Naoya was erased because that's what I personally feel like that's the way she failed miserably. ...ok admittedly it's a not completely logic but still.

So basically, here's the total list of suspected Usurpers based on reader comments:

- Adachi
- Yui Ikari
- Philemon
- The Demiurge
- Nanashi (the SMT IV Protagonist)
- Naoya Toudou (the P1 Protagonist)
- Tatsuya (the P2:IS Protagonist)
- Shinji Ikari
- Pen-Pen

Some of y'all are close. The Usurper may or may not be on this list~

/my money's still on Hideaki Anno
// :V

The stupidest idea would be that it's some version of you. Because if we're gonna go meta with Hideaki Anno, might as well add you in the running.
No it has nothing to do with my grudge against you for putting Minako through that.
Nope.
Nuh uh.
Noooooooo siree. :V

Okay back to story aaaand...Kenny's dealing with his dad. Uh. Yeah. Simply put it doesn't go well, starting from awkward, to his dad reasonably picking at him for his actions over the past month or so, before Kenny picks at his actions about the past years or so. Thankfully, he still gets permission to go, though not without getting hurt emotionally in the process.

/wait
//you thought this was going to be a road trip of full-blown fun times?
///FOOLS
////this is Evangelion
/////family drama comes baked in

Family drama is also baked in Persona as well so that doesn't help either. :V

For example we got:
Naoya in the manga with basically having a similar siutation as Sumire.
Katsuya and Tatsuya being strained even if the former still loves the latter deeply because Katsuya has to act as both parent and brother.
Nearly all of P3's party.
P4...actually their cast has the least parent troubles. I think Rise isn't that close with her parents (i forget if she ever mentions them; i feel like she did), instead is close with her grandmother; Yu is distant with his parents; and Dojima and Nanako were somewhat until Yu came along.
P5. Goro. I mean we have other examples but of course I was gonna mention him mainly. :V

Calling it now if the persona onsen scene does occure, the boys will get hit with an all out attack.
I hope not. I'm very much sick of the Persona Onsen scenes. Specially after Strikers...

Y'know sometimes I feel bad that while I do get why the onsen scenes are bad, particularly Strikers, but I can't help but actually really like the onsen scene from Persona 3. Maybe it's because of how it's presented in the Portable version, maybe it's because I just haven't had seen that many onsen scenes, but despite it apparently being a "cliché" and a very stupid misunderstanding, I still really like it. You could totally avoid the "brush with icy death" in the male route by scaring Yukari off who then convinces the rest to not look into finding them, and in the female route, you could either out the boys...or help them get out, also involving scaring Yukari. Idk I just had a lot of fun doing the onsen scene in P3. P4 I'm more neutral about, partially because of the line going something along the lines of "courage is not going to help you in this situation!". Strikers though is where I'm just cringing at it instead of hating it. You'd think of all the casts, the P5 would know none of the boys would really peep on them on purpose, especially considering everyone knows what Ann has been through.

I am looking forward to writing the Strikers onsen scene eventually though. Because you can bet Aki going to town with the opportunity to literally pounce on her brother. And tease the both the boys and the girls. :V

Now we got Toji and Mana getting permission from Sae and Misato. That's easy enough. Especially once RyuKing contributes to it by tagging along with two others. Who those two others are we'll have to wait and see. As for the last member of the trip, it's Mayumi, who...

"...I don't want to be difficult...just..."

An inquisitive cat, sniffing at a hole leading underground...only to yowl as a great beast emerged, surrounding her in its sinuous coils.

"...let me have this..."

The beast withdrew into the darkness, dragging the struggling cat with it.

"...just one thing..."

The beast stopped; the cat knew it as a stay of execution, and simply ceased to struggle.

"...please...?"

Silence.

The beast's coils loosened, and the cat immediately wiggled out, limping away into the daylight.

"...thank you..."

Wait.
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT.
I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING ABOUT MAYUMI BECAUSE OF ONE OF THE FICS I READ
FUCK
THAT WAS AN ANGEL IN HER HEAD WASN'T IT
FUCK
AND HER FAMILY SITUATION JUST MAKES ME THINK OF KANARU FROM TRINITY SOUL EVEN IF I DOUBT IT'S THE SAME OR EVEN THAT SIMILAR
FUCK

Ahem. Anyways. Mayumi gets both "permission" from the mystery within and from her parents. Which, well, hey at least she was allowed. And she's excited for the trip. So that's one bright side to all of this.

...
still very worried that "definitely not an angel" might kill her just like in that fic that i remembered
i think
all i remember she dies because of an angel in her okay

Meanwhile Shinji is bored out of his mind for a good while, sitting in The Tube™. Because Ritsuko is grumpy. And then she gets even more grumpy because she just found out about Pilate's messaging...thanks to her sending a rather taunting text over Ritsuko's attempts to figure it out before she sent it. That, however, leads to Shinji revealing one of the reasons he agreed to continue the interactions and keep them secret is because he wanted to know more about his mother, which then leads to Ritsuko get even more grumpy (like for real) as she basically calls Shinji, and a few certain other people, "stupid" for dwelling over the past which cannot be changed. That eventually reveals to Shinji about what the MAGI in this branch of NERV are...or rather who: Ritsuko's mother. Okay not exactly but you get the idea.

As they talk about it though, it only just occured to me that the names we saw from when Rei went to the "secret dead spot" (Herod, Pilate and Sophia) are not matching with what Ritsuko knows the names of for the MAGI (Balthasar, Melchior and Casper). I...don't have any idea what that means, but it's something I'm gonna note is all. Also I guess it should've been obvious but still.

Shinji is awed by Ritsuko's explanation on how the MAGI allows cognitive tunneling (which is pretty genius), but that leads to him expressing his condolences...to an even more grumpy Ritsuko who doesn't care.
And pointing out Shinji didn't know her either.
...look i know the timing of when i'm reading this and when i found out about a certain someone's death is coincidence
but i still can't help but go
"for real?"
because the past couple days have just been a bunch of coincidences piled on top of each for me

Ahem. Anyways. Ritsuko's not quite done with talking about death though, as Shinji wonders why is she treating it so casually. And it's simple: it's a fact. Why deny it? Especially when you could focus on the living instead of the dead. Which. Well. On one hand I can agree with the sentiment of not getting bogged down by death so much all because you can't let go and thus you can't enjoy life anymore since it can be unhealthy. But on the other hand I don't think it should be treated that casually. Or maybe more specifically in this case, the past. Because without what happened before, we wouldn't have reached where we are now.

Brief asides.

She reached for a cigarette cartoon in her coat and promptly lit up a Seven Suns brand.

I have a feeling this brand popped up before or it's a real (copyright friendly version) brand, but I can't help but think "Seven Sisters High School".

He turned his head, trying to look at the doctor from his perspective; she was huddled behind her computer terminal, hunched over with visible anger. "...what's wrong."

I'm assuming that's supposed to be a "?", but I have a feeling it might also be fine? Idk. I'm too lazy to look this up right now.

Meanwhile, we got Ren holding back his laughter as he's meeting with...

Goro Akechi frowned in the way that was natural for him. "What idiotic thing are you laughing about now?"

Akechiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
Ahem.

"Oh, nothing in particular," he said, looking at the 'GET SMOKED' embroidered in big yellow letters along the front of Akechi's cap.

OH MY FUCKING GOD AKECHI YOU DORK. WHAT IS IT WITH YOU AND PICKING HATS THAT MAKE YOU LOOK SO DORKY TO ME?

"No, as a matter of fact I don't," Akechi snidely responded. "Why, it almost seems as if 'teammates' and 'friends' are a burden."

Ref!Akira: You know that includes you, right?

Ren snorted, letting a bit of his Joker persona (heh, pun) slip through. "Yeah yeah, you've done this song and dance before. Nobody's buying it, Mister Warden."

Ref!Akira: Least of all me.

"And it's a role I play to perfection, as far as everyone else is concerned."

Ref!Akira: Uh huh. Sure. And I have 20/20 vision.

Anyways. Ren gives his reasons for being the chaperone and driver: as a break for himself as well. He then asks if Akechi "changed his mind" about something, and it turns out it seemed to be about his part in this game and his plans, which the answer is "no".

The angry (because really, an Akechi who didn't have some element of anger within him was simply...not Akechi) boy's eyes narrowed.

Because Akechi is an angy tsundere boi. Of course he gets angry often. :V

Anyways (again). Basically the reason it's a "no" is because of security, and they need all the security they can get considering pErFuMe. Which was why Akechi really didn't like dealing with Ren and his friends. Speaking of...one of them is coming along for the trip! That being his best friend, RyuKing! Looks like your reason is in vain Ren! Because of course it was. Akechi attempts to throw another jab at him with that, but Ren is a troll himself and knows the best counter is simply being calm and thus now Akechi is a Grumpy-kechi.

And then flashback to THAT day.
The day before the Day of Fates.
February 2nd.
And it's just ooooouuuuuuuuuch...
And also briefly amusing because "small potatoes", aka the option that I'm 99% sure it was changed later.

Before Ren goes "life sucks", which is something Akechi, of course, knows very well. Even more so now because his dad's gonna make some moves soon. And he's gonna fight every second. Ren points out it could be as not as bad in this lifetime...buuuut well, while I'm more on Ren's side on that, so far Shido's has not shown any signs of being any better than the one version most of us know about. So I'm with Akechi on this one, because of course he doesn't think his father would be better, cynical as he is.

"And you've got good reason to be, Shishi," he cracked with a grin.

AIYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THERE IT IIIIIIIIIISSS.

Goro Akechi – whose 'real' name in this life was Shimaru Shido – scowled. "I will punch you if you call me that again."

And there's the expected response.

"Hey, at least the lion imagery is somewhat noble. I could be way crueler about it." The wonders of multiple meanings and wordplay. "But I'm a nice guy, so I won't."

Ref!Akira: :3
Ref!Akechi: Aki...spoilers...
Ref!Akira: I didn't say anything!
Ref!Akechi: You were thinking it.
Ref!Akira: But I didn't say anything, right? :D
Ref!Akechi: -long sigh-

Anyways (again ×2!). With that, Akeci stands to leave, telling Ren he's paid for everything. Ren wishes him well, genuinely, despite and because of their relationship. Akechi being Akechi though brushes it off and reminds Ren he needs that more than him since he has to deal with several "brats".

"So charming. I'll make sure to keep you in mind as a babysitter if I ever have kids."

Ref!Akira: -dies laughing-   i almost want this version of you to babysit our kids.
Ref!Akechi: Please, Aki, be merciful...
He's not gonna survive one minute with even one of them.
Ref!Akira: Exactly! It'll be fun! :D
Ref!Akechi: -long but fond sigh-

Anyways (again ×3!), Akechi bolts off, Joker gets a win...which he'll take because now he has to prepare for being so near RyuKing for a reaaaaal long time as the day ends.

It's not the end of this review though!

/so yeah
//definitely a Haru x Joker promoter
///because she's too sweet

Honestly I also like ShuHaru(? I assume it's called that like with ShuAke, ShuAnn, ShuMako, ShuTaba, etc. etc.) as a ship too. Because yes Haru deserves everything. Unfortunately I'll have to deal with her heartbreak because I just...idk just prefer Ren with Ann more (plus his rank 9 with Ann is pretty much my fav of the romance rank 9's in P5; did you hear his little laugh? it's so preciouuuuusssss). Though I partially blame fics for that. XP

////also
/////
No wonder Ren laughed. Goro looks entirely ridiculous. He makes me think of a Light Yagami trying to go incognito somewhere.

Have you seen his dancing outfits? Just look at them! His "P4D" outfit is him in a red jacket with gold stars, a necklace that looks like a winged emblem with an "A" on it and a black cap that has "HERO" written on it. His "P5D" outfit is pompous as fuck with a feather collared jacket(?) and fedora. Both of them make him look like such a dork to me. I mean his P5D suit does look stylish but those feathers man. They crack me up. So it was no surprise...okay more a pleasant but reasonable surprise when it turned out Akechi was wearing a red "GET SMOKED" cap.

Also because he has no idea he's wearing the hat that Shinya Oda wore in a previous life. :V

Also this. This adds the comedy. Especially the association with guns for both of them.

It seems no matter the universe, Ren and Goro have a similar relation.

Ref!Ren: Well he is fun to tease. :3
Ref!Akira: Very. :D
Ref!Akechi: uuugggghhhhh...
Ref!Akira: I love you too, my knight.

And with that, spoiler dodge: activate! :V

-looks at dictionary-
...okay, unless my brain is doing a brain fart again from not understanding the sentence, I think this is an error. I feel like that should've been "accents" or something...

It's actually relating to language from Aristotelian (and later Scholastic) philosophy: if essence refers to the qualities of an entity or substance that make it what it is (for example, the "dog-ness" that makes a dog, or the "Akechi-ness" that makes an Akechi), then accident refers to the tangential or contingent qualities that an entity or substance can go with or without, and the entity or substance would still be unchanged (for example, an accident of a dog could be the color of its fur, while an accident of Goro Akechi could be his profession).

So in this particular scene, Rei's remarking that although the core — the essence — of Shinji's cognition is still the same, its various accidental qualities are somewhat different (reflecting his different selection of Personas).

See here for additional info: Accident (philosophy) - Wikipedia

That question turns out to be armor piercing as Rei clams up and leaves, where...

...we get a flashback.

Of her as LILITH.

Talking to Naoya Todou.

Naoya. Toudou.

And she gives him the power of the A. T. Field.

Before we go back to the present.

With a Rei holding back any form of grieving. Why? Because:

That's why.

NAOYA'S FUCKING TIMELINE GOT FUCKING DELETED DIDN'T IT HUH?
IT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE
ALONG WITH ALL HIS FRIENDS
AND LIKELY ALL THE PERSONA 2 CAST
AND THE TWO GAMES' POPULATIONS
HUH?
AND THAT'S WHY REI'S GRIEVING
BECAUSE EVEN WHEN (if?) EVERYTHING IS FIXED
THOSE SOULS CAN'T BE BROUGHT BACK.
BECAUSE OF COURSE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.
honestly i'm not that surprised
idk maybe i'm more drained from the butterfly effect than i thought
I mean I could be very wrong on what happened to Naoya's timeline and souls, but that's what I'm gonna assume with the bit given to me.
BECAUSE HEY WHY NOT JUST ASSUME THE WORST 'EY???

Man, why you gotta be such a pessimist. They could be waiting in the wings as spiritual zombies to be deployed against Rei Ayanami for maximum trauma. You just never know! :V

If you're gonna continue this wackiness, then I ask you to make Teddie badass.

*thinks of a recent piece of commissioned art and chuckles*

You just don't want a good boi like Naoya to actually be a bad boi.

As for the last member of the trip, it's Mayumi, who...

Nah, it'll be fine!

I...don't have any idea what that means, but it's something I'm gonna note is all. Also I guess it should've been obvious but still.

It was previously disclosed on June 21 (during Shinji's meeting with Dr. Akagi, where she covered the Mission Board app with him) that HEROD is "a particular cycle [of the MAGI], dynamically generated from several subroutines from BALTHASAR, MELCHIOR, and CASPER." Presumably, PILATE is the same, just generated dynamically from different subroutines...and SOPHIA (who hasn't appeared much yet) is likely the same.

So the MAGI are Balthasar, Melchior, and Casper; you could say the Herod, Pilate, and Sophia are facets of the original three, but not equivalent to them.

...look i know the timing of when i'm reading this and when i found out about a certain someone's death is coincidence

I'm trying not to collapse under the unintentional irony. XD

I have a feeling this brand popped up before or it's a real (copyright friendly version) brand, but I can't help but think "Seven Sisters High School".

It's an expy of the "Seven Stars" brand of Japanese cigarettes: Seven Stars (cigarette) - Wikipedia

I'm assuming that's supposed to be a "?", but I have a feeling it might also be fine? Idk. I'm too lazy to look this up right now.

It's to get across his tone, phrasing the question in the manner of a statement than as an actual inquiry. (I like being loosey-goosey with dialogue.)

And then flashback to THAT day.
The day before the Day of Fates.
February 2nd.
And it's just ooooouuuuuuuuuch...

this wasn't timed with Billy's passing I swear

It's almost like anything that's not suppressed by his drive to be conspiratorial assassin must be geared to maximize his "dorky chuuni" expression. :V
