"And who is this?" Karle asked, standing on the cobbles a little unsteadily. But he couldn't be drunk. He was blinking a lot, though, clearly out of sorts for one reason or another. "What's she doing here? This place, it's a warzone. I was almost trampled in the streets."
"He was in the way," Pippa said, with a shrug. "But not enough in the way for it to be alright to shove him around. I almost started a war."
"A war? It would have taken more than you to start a war," Naja said, smirking.
"Well, have you seen Pippa fight? So you wouldn't know, would you?" Aisling asked.
Lisbeth was looking from one to the other, nose twitching, clearly just as uncertain about them as they were about her. It was a side-street, at least, and so there wasn't as much activity as there might be. It stank of dyes and alchemical solutions, marking it as where cloth was dyed to be sold. No wonder they were one of the few people out on the streets.
"But really, who is it?" Naja asked.
"It's very impressive that you've already found someone in a matter of hours," Pippa said. "Though I didn't think that that was what this was about."
"This is Lisbeth, she's an old friend."
"An old friend? From your village?" Naja asked, eyes wide.
"No, my first adventure after I left it, I wound up helping her out." Lotte turned and smiled at Lisbeth, the warm feelings still flowing through her chest. She was in a very good mood, and she wanted all of them to like her, to appreciate Lisbeth the way Lotte did.
"Lisbeth, this is Naja, and Aisling, and this is Karle and his guard, Pippa," Lotte said, gesturing around to each person in turn, shifting a little in place as she tried to settle in. The cobbles felt a little odd against her scales, rubbing as she moved.
It was still strange, in some ways, to be so changed. It was equally strange that people got out of Lotte's way just fine, and didn't even step on her tail. It would have been easily to clumsily and absentmindedly drive a cart onto her tail, to considerable… distress.
Lotte had been worried about that, had almost wanted to be back in the wilderness, where she understood the rules and knew how to move around, even with a tail to deal with. The atmosphere of this meeting wasn't as bad as it might have been.
"It is good to meet you. I'm Lisbeth, a Rat Piper. Lotte probably overstates how well we knew each other, but I'm still very grateful for all she's done."
Aisling looked at Lotte for a moment, her eyes bright and thoughtful. "Interesting to meet you, Lisbeth. Will we be seeing more of you in the coming days?"
"Probably. I was going to offer the name of an inn that has open space," Lisbeth said. "I don't know every detail of what you seek to do here, but it has room, and it should be affordable."
"Well, we're still going to be exploring. This is a fascinating town, really," Naja said. "So hard-working. It's also very wise of them to almost run over Karle." Naja smirked at that, looking over at Karle like a girl pulling her brother's braids in the hopes of getting him to blow up in a fury.
Karle instead just got a look somewhere between angry and constipated and looked away.
"Please forgive them, they are but children," Aisling said. "Very, very small children."
"Hey!" Naja shouted.
A few people turned to glare at them who were walking past.
"I am not involved in this feud," Karle said, with a nervous cough. "I hope we have not ruined your impression of us."
"Too late on that," Aisling said. "So, where is this place to stay? We really should go there."
"It's not even close to nightfall," Naja protested.
"Exactly. We should be settled in if we're going to go out anywhere to drink," Pippa pointed out.
"Or we could stay in, wherever this is, to drink," Naja said. "But drinking should definitely be involved, that's certain to me."
Lotte was a little nervous at the thought, but she didn't say anything. Lisbeth, tail flicking, glanced over at Lotte and said, "There is a bar down below where I sleep. So if you wanted to go there…"
"Ah, right. What sort of place is it? It serve food as well?"
"Yes. Good, solid food," Lisbeth said. "Nothing to live your life for, but enough to live your life with."
"Oh, she's clever," Aisling said, with a whistle, her voice silvery with restrained laughter. "Let's do it, Naja."
"I… suppose it won't be that bad."
*******
"Another round, another round for all of our new friends!" Naja called, standing up unsteadily and dancing around a little. "I have the money, and I have the time."
"Not a crime, not a crime!" one of the drunken regulars chanted, the remnants of some song that Lotte hadn't even paid attention to.
Lotte's focus was on a single person. Lisbeth. She'd drank down three mugs of beer, barely enough to do all that much. Lisbeth was on her fifth, her cheeks beautifully rosy, smiling wide as she all but clung to Lotte's side.
"They're good people, y'know." Lisbeth's words were only slightly slurred, her bright eyes darting over to where Aisling tried to keep Naja from tipping over and hurting herself. Then to where Karle was on his second drink, carefully keeping within his limits. Or over to where Pippa was flirting with a man with antlers, who looked very charmed by her words and deeds, whatever those were.
It was hard to hear anything in the noise and confusion of the evening. It drove everyone together, and split them apart at the same time. The bar stank of beer, and Lotte grabbed a fourth stein, sipping carefully.
"Yeah, they are. It's good that they're trying to do all of this for me. But what if we can't figure it out? They have their own lives, and we'd have to part ways eventually."
"And you don't want that?"
"I'm sick of partings already," Lotte admitted, tongue loosened by the drink. "I shouldn't be. I'm an adventurer, and I don't wanna stop that."
"Ah." Lisbeth frowned and said. "Isn't the solution to that a 'party.' A group you join, a faction you're aligned with?"
"I suppose." Lotte drained the rest of her drink, and so did Lisbeth. Lisbeth yelled out the order for another, clearly taking the chance to overindulge. But Lotte knew it was safe enough, it wasn't as if Lisbeth had far to go if she was falling down drunk.
"Well, I could go with you. I don't know if I will, but I could!" Lisbeth declared, hugging Lotte's shoulders, wobbling a bit, before pulling away just long enough to take another gulp of the beer. A little of it dripped down her chin, and her whiskers were shining slightly from the droplets on them.
It was unbearably cute. "You're cute," Lotte said, before realizing what she said.
"Um, thanks. You're… you're really attractive too," Lisbeth said. "I had a thought…"
She trailed off, clearly losing focus for a moment.
"You had a thought?"
"You're in a room with Karle and Pippa, right?"
The inn had one larger room, and in order to save space, they were going to be sharing it. "Yes. Why?"
"You should sleep with me," Lisbeth said.
Lotte flushed, "I'm not sure if that'd be safe. Wouldn't you be uncomfortable with me in your room." It wasn't very big as rooms went, Lotte thought, taking another swig.
"I have plenty of pillows, and you're not actually a snake, Lotte. You're not going to eat me." Lisbeth paused, and then her face became berry red. "I-I mean, n-not that… I didn't…"
Lotte blinked, not quite sure what was being said, and then she remembered some of what her mother had talked about, and realized what must have crossed Lisbeth's mind. Then she too was too warm. She felt like squirming, but if she did, Lisbeth would see it, so instead she went deathly still. "R-right," Lotte said.
Both of them reached for another stein, wanting to move past this. Lisbeth drank even faster than Lotte, and swayed in place even more.
"Oh, wow. That's a little… too much," Lisbeth said. "I didn't mean to… make you uncomfortable."
"I'm not. I'm not sure if I…" Lotte began.
She wasn't sure of whether she was a woman or a man, and so the idea of sex was still uncomfortable. But her vague imagination tried to process 'eating' Lisbeth, and the vague pictures it shot into her brain were not… unwelcome. But the moment she realized her arousal, it felt like it was fading. She felt wet, she felt slick, she felt strange, and it drew attention to her own… to her own body.
It shouldn't be like that, should it? This should be happy, not feel like it was all about to go wrong. She watched Lisbeth drink another stein and said, "I'm just not sure of a lot of things."
"It's okay. I'm… I just need to…" Lisbeth mumbled, and stepped forward, only to almost fall.
Almost, because Lotte caught her by her arm.
"Oh, huh. I'm falling down drunk. Uuussually my tail helps stop that." She twitched it in a way that drew Lotte's eye to it, and then by default to her butt. Lotte blushed, trying not to think too much of Lisbeth that way. Yes, they'd kissed, and there was attraction between them, but that wasn't the same as…
As what? What would she even do, if somehow they were both naked and full of desire?
That stopped her short.
"What do you need?"
"I need to get back to bed. Can you… can you help me?"
Lotte nodded, and then had a drunken idea. It was probably a bad one, but she wanted to do it anyways. She leaned down and picked Lisbeth up, holding her close to her chest. "There. Now we can go."
There was laughter and cheers from people who no doubt expected this would lead to… sex upstairs.
Lisbeth didn't struggle--if she had Lotte would have set her back down immediately--instead nuzzling into Lotte's chest, which felt so much better when there was--
Lotte flushed and began moving towards the stairs, making sure to be careful since she was carrying such precious cargo.
"You're so strong," Lisbeth muttered, her voice vibrating against Lotte. "Thank you…"
"I hope you don't regret your drinking," Lotte slurred, as she began to inch her way up the stairs. Lisbeth really wasn't that heavy, and Lotte made sure to hold her in a way that wasn't anything like pinching or groping. Nothing inappropriate, just--
Just the feeling of Lisbeth in her arms, lighter than expected, fragile and yet solid, there like something out of a dream.
"Of course I won't," Lisbeth said. "I know what… what I'm doing." She nuzzled Lotte a little more, nose twitching as if somehow the scent of Lotte was comforting to her. Up the stairs they went.

"You were right," Lisbeth said, standing in front of the compound. "I did regret it."
Lotte would have teased her, but she was still hung up on her own dreams. She didn't know what they involved, exactly, just that she had woken up incredibly aroused, laying on a mass of pillows and blankets on Lisbeth's floor, with a vague memory of imagined sensations.
She really didn't want to think about it at the moment, and luckily there was the compound. It was huge, but without any gates at all, just a big block of stone and wood, three floors high, and wide enough to dominate the area. It had a yard filled with flowering and fruiting trees, and Lotte could smell nothing other than the wildness of this building. She'd never seen anything like that, especially in the middle of a town. It was outright extravagant.
The large wooden front doors flew open and a bare chested man strode out. He was blond, with hair down to his waist, and well-muscled, a little like Lotte. He was a little smaller than Lotte, and he had silvery eyes as he looked them up and down. "I smelled a rat," he said. "And a snake. Is this some sort of joke? What are you doing on our grounds?"
"I am an adventurer, and a hunter. I wished to talk to the head of your family, if they had time. I was curious, having heard about the fight in the market," Lotte said.
"Well, well. A snake, a hunter? I don't believe it. Really I don't. If you want to talk to our Matriarch, I'm going to have to see some of this supposed hunter's talent."
"Lotte doesn't have to prove anything to you," Lisbeth declared.
But Lotte, body heavy, with a hangover of his own--still wanted to prove herself. She frowned and said, "What is your name? And what would you want to see?"
"I am Octavius Mondzyks, nephew of the matriarch of our clan, whose history stretches back a thousand years." He gave a rough, curt nod, standing in a heroic looking pose. "And you have much to prove if you wish to be worthy to step before the greatest huntress our clan has ever seen."
