Sailor Moon Crystal comments and reactions

So, the interminable extra-week wait for Episode five is over.

Does anyone else feel like Juuban Middle School is a cliquish little hellhole? First they froze out Ami for having too-perfect grades, then they go spreading evil rumors about Makoto for being taller than them (so tall in fact that she can't wear their uniform - it doesn't come in her size, not that the teachers can resist twitting her about it). Umino is a horrible little troll for being in the middle of the rumor mill, as well.

From what I can tell, they've sorted out the art goofs that were in the last couple of episodes, though I think Rei's basic character design is part of the problem I'm having with it. (her eyes are way too big for her face, even beyond normal anime style). The anime continues the trend of giving the Senshi just a *little* more firepower than they used to in the old series - Jupiter gains a crowd control attack called "Flower Hurricane" that causes sharp rose petals to whirl around the targets, cutting them if they move, for long enough to charge up her "Jupiter Thunderbolt" which she one-shots the youma of the week with.

Makoto saves you from being hit by a car and the first thing you notice is she smells nice. Oh Usagi

Makoto is my favorite of the Inners (although Jupiter being an Inner is weird) so I was pretty excited about this episode. Makoto looked really nice character design wise, and her tomboy outside/girly girl inside came across very well. Also nice to see they used very shortened transformation sequences for the others this time.

They've been mixing the transformations up all along, really.

Episode 1: Sailor Moon full transformation, speech a little later
Episode 2: Sailor Moon full transformation+speech, Sailor Mercury full transformation+speech
Episode 3: Sailor Moon+Sailor Mercury simultaneous transformation+speech, Sailor Mars full transformation+speech
Episode 4: Sailor Mercury+Sailor Mars simultaneous transformation+speech, Sailor Moon truncated transformation
Episode 5: Sailor Moon+Sailor Mercury+Sailor Mars simultaneous transformation+speech, Sailor Jupiter full transformation+speech

The only transformation shown in full more than once has been Sailor Moon's, the others have been spliced into Moon's or together.

Also, I've researched the attacks a little and it turns out that all of the attacks are from the manga, though many of the names weren't in the original release, but were added or changed in the reprint they made back when the live action series was airing.

Finally...

I think we might have another departure from the Manga, as it looks like Nephrite got away and according to the manga he was supposed to die there. I wonder where they're going with this? Might we be getting a full 26 episodes just for the first arc?

You know, I always had a tie between my favorite inners.

Mars and Jupiter.

Now, Sailor Jupiter is voiced by an actor I recognize, and while it might be petty, that's pretty much bumped her into the lead in my book.

Makoto, Don't Lose Your Way.

EDIT:

So, anyone think that the Four Generals might survive completely and be redeemed at all?

This does seem to follow the whole "The Four Generals were the Inner Senshis' lovers in their past lives" sort of thing. Besides Moon of course.

So, episode 6. Nice to see our trend of cross dressing continues for the Shitennou. First Nephrite(gasp!) and now Zoisite(ok, is anyone really surprised?) And yup, way off the rails when suddenly Queen Beryl.

Noticed something in the OP for this episode, so I went back to rewatch the first episode's OP.
The Princess Serenity in the OP's hair color has changed from blonde to silver, it seems.

Episode 7 is out:

Mamoru explains his motivations (and gains another one); we get to meet Metallia (and Beryl turns out to be a bad minion with thoughts of rebellion); Zoicite opens a rental DVD shop and mind controls the whole city (how come only the main cast didn't rent videos from that shop?), Zoicite handily defeats four senshi and Tuxedo Kamen, and we get a surprise ending. :)

All in all, decent episode, and I loved the ending. Stupid two-week wait for the next episode. :(

Some good reveals in this episode, definitely caught my interest.

Although for once I'd like the Senshi to notice the shady goings-on before the streets are filled with mind-control victims. I'm pretty sure they managed to do that a few times in the original.

To be honest, when Ami was watching it, I was expecting it to grab her too. I'm starting to see shades of the Live Action here though.

Episode 8 is out.

And we have the paper thin 'V is the Princess' plot. Which is almost blown right there as Moon's tiara transforms again and Usagi knows there's something not right about V's claims.

Also, cape-boy gets told to get back to the kitchen while the real fighters do their thing... only to sacrifice himself to save Moon. We're moving right along now.. Next episode: Serenity. Princess.

It's certainly a lot less paper-thin than the original. IIRC, in the original Sailor V didn't even say she was the princess, they just guess it because nobody else has fit the bill yet. Here, she has a crescent moon on her forehead, her main attack is a crescent boomerang, and she puts on a good act.

It's still sort of obvious to the viewers, but it comes off as "V is playing body double to the princess" instead of "The cast can't put two and two together and get four."

Well, the others didn't pick up on it, but yeah, Usagi definitely is(not to mention nearly blowing it right there when her tiara transformed almost into the crescent moon.)

Also. Tactics! Against Kunzite! Who casually reclines as if on a chair and starts snuffing out all of Tokyo.

What the hell happened to Hulu's translation in this episode? Queen Serenity's narrative got all the drama taken out of it because it had things like "We were the long-living creature on the moon" or "Variant creature who invaded Earth and attempted to plunder."

Well, here's something I didn't expect.

Link.

NHK recently ran an official popularity contest for the Sailor Moon anime, and according to the results Sailor Uranus is currently the most popular character in the series. In fact, looking at the poll results the top five in order of popularity for the senshi themselves goes:

1. Uranus
2. Moon
3. Venus
4. Neptune
5 Saturn
