Sailor Moon Crystal comments and reactions

I've generally enjoyed it. I have no particular complaints that can't be countered with "It's freakin' Sailor Moon, get over it", so I'll leave it at "I liked the transformation sequence, but hope they don't use it all the time and can't wait to see how things go once the whole group is together and we get to actually see the villains".

Well, Mamoru isn't exactly a hero to start with, he's a gentleman catburglar. When did you last see one of those acting in a traditionally heroic manner by putting himself in danger if he could get away without it?

I confident that Naoko Takeuchi will have her heroes do the right thing as the true allies of justice and role models to all girls and help bring the criminal scoundrel to face the law.

Perhaps Chiba Mamoru can yet be rehabilitated from his thieving ways and making inappropriate advances towards underage girls and turned into a productive member of the society.

Finally got around to watching it. While it's not my first time seeing Sailor Moon, I've only seen a couple episodes of the original, dubbed or subbed.

Usagi's VA is really, really grating. Yes, I know she's the original and that she's made quite the name for herself in other roles, but to me at least, it's blatantly obvious that she's a 40-something-year-old woman trying to sound like a teenager, and it's not working very well.

The animation style also really clashes with Usagi's character and the tone of the show so far. It may or may not be more accurate to the manga; it doesn't matter. You're showing us this willowy, graceful-looking girl (even drawing in her lipstick, which is relatively rare in anime and therefore sticks out all the more when it is done) and then making her a clumsy crybaby in a relatively lighthearted, comedic show? Maybe it'll work better as the storyline develops, but so far it's...dissonant, to say the least.

The CG in the transformation sequence didn't really bother me so much; I actually thought it looked rather good. (But then I don't have a problem with CG in general unless it's utterly terrible.) The sheer over-the-top self-indulgence of the sequence was more noticeable, but hey, I actually like transformation sequences so I'm okay with that.

I'm honestly not sure what to think of it yet, overall. It's very obvious that it's a Kid's Show, but so was the original, and the original ended up founding an entire genre that persists to this day. I'll give it a couple more episodes at least.

Arrrrgh! My cruddy internet refuses to let me watch this show! Can't stream anything it seems. Why do i even have a crunchyroll subscription.

Give me my Sailor Moon, dangnabbit!

Opening is pretty kickass in any case.

Ive never seen any of the original SM, so this is entirely new for me. Seems more than good enough though.

Just saw the episode. My favorite part was Ami.

Also, when Usagi tripped over Luna I was like "serves you right for stepping on Luna!"

Being a cat ownee myself, I have to wonder two things with that scene - one is "how does one step on a cat anyway?", and "how does Usagi manage to not send Luna flying when she gets scratched in the face not just once, but several times?" is the second.

A real cat would not have gotten stepped on (they have situational awareness and reflexes like...cats.), and a real teenager would have sent Luna in a ballistic arc by pure reflex.

Speaking of the master race, I wonder what's up with my Owner right now, she keeps sprinting back and forth between the balcony and the front door.

I and my family have actually occasionally stepped on our cat. Usually when both of us were not paying attention, or when we were both going up the stairs. And Luna was kinda distracted, I think the bandaids also negatively impacted her cognitive function.

As to Usagi not tossing Luna, *shurg* I think it's genre convention.

It definitely looks like they're sticking with the awful pacing of the manga. Though I'm going to remain hopeful that they don't.

Why do I have a sinking feeling that Jedite will die next episode?

I have a hunch you're right.

I was really hoping that despite the fact that the show was going to be more faithful to the manga, they'd realize how flawed the pacing in it was and change it up a bit. It was just far too breakneck and didn't really leave much room for character growth, but I'm beginning to think that they aren't going that route, unfortunately.

The fansub I watched translated "Shitenno" into just "king", with the context lost in translation.

So Jadeite called himself "one of the Four Kings of Dark Kingdom" to... the queen of the Dark Kingdom.

Since only an Empress can have King level vassals, then Beryl must obviously be a queen regnant with four king consorts. :D

...But Materia is a queen too and the ultimate sovereign ("Great Ruler"). So Beryl must be, in turn, a royal consort to her?

The only part I thought was noticeably bad was the line up sequence near the end.

When Usagi rushed into the room to save Ami, for just a fraction of a second there I was almost expecting a Cutey Honey homage.

"Who are you?"

"Sometimes I'm a a school girl, and sometimes I'm a doctor, but the truth is... Moon Prism Power Makeup!" *que transformation sequence*
