Sagas of Heroes and Legends

The case, continued
[X] Go back and help talking with the kids.

Well, you couldn't guarentee you would find anything here at the moment, and it wasn't like there was a rush to find the kids now. You informed the officer about your decision and then drove back.

The children and the bus had been brought to a small playground nearby the school where the bus had stopped apparently. The oldest was almost twelve. Most of the kids didn't look like they had been gone a day in your view, but you didn't really know kids, so you couldn't say. The parents were milling around outside a police corridor and looking anxious.

"Why are they all gathered here?" You ask the officer as you pull up.

"Weren't sure what happened. We want them together and have a doctor on the way." Timothy nods at you. "You ready?"

You snort. "Not really, but I'm going to do it anyway." You pull on the helmet and get out of the car.

Your superhero outfit isn't really flashy. It was provided for you as a basic thing that all heroes needed. Technically you didn't even have to wear it, but the other heroes had found outfits tended to get a better reaction than something else. It made them seem more impressive and smoothed things over. You were hoping that the same effect worked on the kids.

You actually had a modified set of boots with the outfit too. They had a pair of skates they could snap on. Not as good as a solid set of roller blades, but good for very quick modification if you needed to use your power. You could probably get something more custom later after you were established.

As you stepped out of the car there was a pallable hush from the kids. The parents looked at you too, but the kids running around on the playground almost immediately spotted you.

"Who're you mister?" One of the more adventuresome kids ran up to you as you passed the police barracade.

"I'm the hero Hot-wheels." You answer and kneel down.

"Hot-wheel's isn't a hero." Another one of the kids called out.

"I'm new, so you haven't heard of me yet." You answer back, and get one of the most skeptacle looks you've ever seen on a kid.

"The prove it!" The same kid that challenged you demanded. The rest of the kids started to chime in as well.

"All right, all right!" You laugh and reach down to your boots. A click later and you had a pair of skates. "Now watch." You kicked off with a forceful thrust.

Over the playground and then around it once. That was all you did, but it was at your top speed on the skates. Obviously faster than what other people could do as well, which was good. You stopped in front of the kids with a skid and then placed your hands on your hips.

"That good enough!" You asked.

"Borrring!" One of the boys who had watched shook a hand at you in reply.

You huff, and hear all the kids start to argue about what you had just done. After you realize that they're not going to stop anytime soon you raise up your hands and raise your voice. "That's enough!" They start getting quieter, so you continue. "Now you know why heroes get called right?"

"It's because of the pretty people." One of the girls state quietly.

"Yes." You kneel down in front of her. "Could you tell me what happened?"

The girl ducked her head and scuffed her feet. "We were going to school, and then the bus went into a pretty place. The driver was acting funny, and drove up to this really pretty place with plants and pretty people. They wanted to play with us."

"And you did?" You coax, tilting your head to see one of the officers getting closer. The man's obviously trying to listen in and not be obvious. Fortunately the girl doesn't seem to notice.

"Well, they were pretty nice and gave us cake and something they called sweet-tea." The girl stuck out her tongue. "The tea didn't taste that good, but they let me ride on a Unicorn!"

Your really glad they can't see your face. "And then what happened?"

"They said they wanted to play a trick on people, so we had to be quiet about it." The girl scuffs her foot again.

"What was the trick?" You ask.

"I shouldn't say. They were really nice, and they said if we did it right they might let us visit again. I liked the unicorn." The girl looks at the officers as she speaks and frowns.

"You know heroes are good people right? I really would like to know what they did." You keep your voice low.

"It's a secret." The girl whispers, but glances at another girl and leans forward. "I'm not supposed to look like this."

You're very glad for your helmet. "What should you look like?"

"I'm supposed to look like Janet." The girl points, and keeps her voice low. "We all got fake stuff! It's pretty neat, I have long hair like this." The girl tugs at her hair.

You look at the other girl. That one has short hair and has wandered off to play on the playground. You swallow. "And did they say how long it was supposed to last?"

"They said sunset." The girl looks at the sky.

You look up with her. Yeah, that would be in a few hours still. You couldn't verify if that was true or not until then. You personally couldn't even verify if the girl was telling the truth.

"Thank you for telling me. I'll keep it a secret." You nod and the girl grins as she moves away in response.

A few minutes later you're talking with the police officers about what the girl had told you. There's no consensus about what to do next though. Well, aside from them wanting to keep the kids on lockdown until the sun sets. You can imagine the parents are going to start protesting soon.

Thoughts: Well, supernatural something at least. I'm worried that these 'pretty people' did something more than what the girl said though. The tea sounds suspicous. It reminds me of fairy tales here, and now I'm worried about so many things.

[X] Head back to the place where you saw the tracks

Courage to strengthen, Fire to blind, Music to dazzle, and Iron to bind.

Hmmm. We might want to think about an option to add to gather appropriate equipment, in case whatever we're facing is close enough to the fae of legend that the weaknesses mentioned in those tales are effective here.

So lets get to poking all of the kids with cold iron. It may even end the spell early.

[X]Get Some Iron And a Tox Screen on those kids. And Broad Spectrum goggles.
[X] Wait until sundown

The thing about asking for elaborate equipment was that it took a fair amount of time to get it unfortunately. You had a few ideas, and possible speculations, but no real leads unfortunately. Fortunately being a hero meant you could put a priority on certain things. You learned this after talking with the police and then calling your support line. If it was related to 'hero business' you could get a rush called in, and someone literally coming on a plane with your request. In this case you got a scientist on the way with a few tools to check more exotic things.

As for toxin screening, that involved needles and blood drawing unfortunately. Which... Honestly involved one of the worst scenes of chaos you had seen just shy of apocalypse movies. Apparently worried parents, skiddish kids, and tired officers lead to chaos, who knew?

You had never been so thankful as you were right then that it wasn't your job. It had started innocently enough. Pull the kid aside and have them get themselves stuck. If you poked them with iron too, it was just to see if something happened. Then the parents had started to get antsy. The kids had started to pick up that and started to become uncooperative.

At some point one of the boys had lost their shirt. Then another one had decided to follow suit. And now you had half a dozen boys running around in their underpants and screaming. A girl was crying over bloodied knees, and the rest of the children were shrieking. The parents were starting to push at the police officers keeping them back, and you were keeping far, far back.

It was probably for this reason you were the only one to hear the laughter. You slid back slightly on your skates and tilted your head. Then tilted your head in your helmet as you tried to identify the source. It was further back and in the woodline.

You frowned and looked at the chaos. You could get help, but on your skates you were probably the largest threat here at the moment. You moved after the voice.

Nothing on the ground, but up in the trees were a few small people with wings. You wanted to be surprised, but really, you probably should have expected it. What you hadn't expected was the camcorder one of them was holding though. It was an older model, but it didn't quite fit what you were thinking of.

"Hahaha! Look at them go!" One of them squeeked out in a high pitched voice.

"Knights here!" Another spoke as it looked down at you. "Ho Sir Knight! Enjoying the festivities?" You could just barely understand them honestly. The voice was a bit too high and speach a bit too fast.

You crossed your arms. "What did you do?"

"Nothing harmful sir knight!" The same one responded. "Just having a spot o' fun. Court of Dancing Shadows and all that jazz." It gestured to the one with the camera. "Getting it recorded for our ladies' pleasure and all that."

"Oh, I expected fun, but all in one place?" The one with the camera giggled.

"I'm going to have to ask you to come with me." You stated as you looked up. "Just to talk a bit."

"Naaaah." One of them responded and fluttered to another branch. "I mean, we saw what your skills are sir knight. Getting up in trees is not one of them."

You sucked at your teeth in response. Technically they were right. Practically though...

You skated back some, judging the distance and the path. You had never done this before, and were half concerned that you were going to mess it up. Considering what you were seeing, you were quite certain that if you messed up you were never going to live it down. So you discarded the riskier tricks and settled on something simple.

Their camera followed you as you backed up, and then crouched down to get a good start. A kick off and you activated your power at full strength. You accelerated impossibly quickly, and then kicked out. The tree wasn't one of the larger ones, so it creaked and tilted from the impact.

The fairies in the tree shouted and started to flitter away. They were really quick and mobile. But with your power you were mobile too. The trick was keeping on paths you could skate on. You didn't need to roll all the time, but your power was strange like that. It wasn't just wheels, you had to be moving just a bit. You could step too.

Which was needed. Flying versus foot should have been an easy escape for them. Except it wasn't. You were lead over trees and had to leap a small valley. Then over a field of grass where you started to catch yup to their consternation.

"No fair!" One of them shouted out.

"Of course we'd find the fast knight!" Another one complained. "Up high!"

Your quarry darted up high and into a nearby thick treeline. With gritted teeth you followed. You were committed now. Right before you hit the treeline, you leaped into the air. They would lose you if they managed to get out of sight after a moment.

Were you a normal person this would have been impossible. Damsel had made you decidedly abnormal. You got into the air high enough to hit into the branches. Your power protected you from the lashing wood and instead the boughs themselves bent against your speeding form. You grabbed, and felt your arms wrench this a bit, but converted your momentum into movement as best you could.

Unintentionally you flipped through the air and started a tumble. Heart in your throat, you disobeyed every normal instinct and leaned out a leg. You hit a tree trunk with the foot, and felt your power 'catch' again. You pushed off it, and stopped your tumble as you kicked.

What happened next was a bit of a blur. You kicked and jumped after the fairies. Just barely keeping them in sight as you barreled through like a mad bull. They were shrieking something and trying to dart behind more than a few trees, but by this point you had so much momentum that you couldn't really control yourself aside from going forward.

The transition wasn't abrupt, and just barely noticeable as focused as you were. But you could feel it thrum in your bones as you transitioned somewhere else. The treeline cut off again, and the fairies flew into the air as you paused a moment and pulled out a few stuck branches.

You were somewhere else now. You could tell it.

Well, the centaur woman shaking a spear at the fairies darted by her really told you more. You could hear her cursing even from your distance. She hadn't spotted you yet. With long green hair, ram like horns atop her head, and a shaggy horse like body, she couldn't be mistaken for anything but out of this world. Glowing white eyes completed the picture of a savage and fantastic creature.

She hadn't spotted you yet thankfully.

Thoughts: Probably shouldn't have chased. Whoops?
