[X]Accept the challenge.
-[X] A proper race on a winding path, not just a sprint.
-----
You, probably shouldn't be agreeing to this. You really can't be risking yourself in a competition. But that dream you once had is pushing you just a bit. You had been an invalid dying from cancer. Now you were a hero. Or should be. And a hero didn't back down because of risk. You can't help but feel yourself grin just a bit.
"All right then, race." You state.
The centaur literally bounces happily. "Hahaha! Oh yes I'm going to make you eat dust."
"It has to be a proper race though." You cross your arms and stare at the woman as you make your demands. "Turns and twists. Not a sprint."
The centaur pauses and then nods decisively. "Fair enough. Follow the treeline and you'll hit a path I've worn down. It goes to my tent and the water source I use. We go through there and around the tent, then back here." She points her spear down and slams it into the ground to leave a marker. "First one to touch it after lapping my tent wins."
You look over the area she said and think a bit on it. You don't know the area at all, but you don't think she's going to let you run over the course to be honest. She's already rearing to go.
"On three then?" You move towards her side and look up at her.
She grins widely and stomps on the ground. "One, Two, Three!" She howls out the last part and dashes off in a sprint.
You aren't idle either. She knows the area, but this is a circuit. You'll know the way back. You follow behind as you force your power to compensate for the bumpy ground. These aren't the best skates in the world, you'd need roller blades for that, but they'll work. Your power lets you compensate for a lot.
She's surprisingly fast. You know the horse lower half wasn't for show, but even still there was something special actually seeing it. You've never seen horses go full out either to be honest, so you don't know how she matches up. You have to push yourself just a bit to keep up honestly.
When she glances back to see you still following, she actually seems just a bit surprised and picks it up even more. You let her get a bit of a head, and then see her veer off into the path.
Here's where you catch up. She's still bound by physics. You're not so much anymore. You turn tightly and nearly brush against her green tail. You're tempted to grab it to be cheeky, but you'd rather not be kicked.
The path's fairly straight, but it does have some bend where it has to go around terrain. A big rock here that she bounces around suddenly and causes you to give her a bit of a lead, then a few trees that need to be leaped. Those nearly trip you up to be honest, but not much.
"Hah! You're keeping up better than I'd thought!" She calls back confidently. "You gotta beat me though!"
"You know we have a saying right? Slow and steady wins the race!" You call back and watch the path in front of you.
"That's stupid!" She laughs and then calls back. "Good luck with those wheels in the next part!"
You see what she means quickly. There's a river on the way, and a small sand bank. You see a tent just a few feet away too. An honest to god tepee tent at that. Your mind boggles just a bit, but you dismiss any thoughts that might have come up, and think as fast as you ever have.
Your opponent is slowed just a bit as she leaps the river and lands in the sand. She sinks just a bit and stumbles, obviously having never done something like that before. The momentum is lost there. You have to just take advantage of it.
Well, you've already had a bit of practice jumping with your power, so it wouldn't hurt to continue with it. Your heart leaps into your throat as you crouch down and then kick off right before the river starts. You soar through the air, and land just a foot in front of the woman. The sand gives beneath your feet, and you turn your momentum into a roll.
Sand goes everywhere, and you hear your opponent sputter. You just continue to roll and then your feet are under you. The wheels grind against the sand and you hope your power is up to it. Somehow, someway it is.
The sand falls off as you barely manage to get back to your feet. You have the lead by a hair, and you spin around the tent with all the skill you can maintain.
Unfortunately that just means you're right back to the sand pit, and this time you lack the momentum you had. In a split second you have to make a decision, and you take the turn wider. You need the momentum.
"Don't know what magic you have, but it's not going to help!" Your opponent is covered in sand as she leaps over the river. "See you at the finish knight-slave!"
"Oh yeah right, like I'd let you." You mutter, and push off. Over the river and back you came.
This time you know the path and you give it your all. Over the trees without missing a beat, and then to the big rock. You can see how the path is worn around it. As a quadruped, your opponent has to be careful on certain areas apparently. The rock's just too hard to get over for her.
It would be for you too, if you were on foot. On your skates you jump again. This time using your momentum to climb up the hard surface. You kick off at the peak and soar through the air.
The branches and trees lash at your riding leathers. They hit your helmet as you break through them. Leaves fly everywhere, and you land on the path again. This time ahead of your opponent.
"Cheater!" She shouts and impossibly you can hear her speed up.
You chance a glance back and see her flushed and and sprinting in earnest now. Her horns are lowered as she leans forward and her hair streaming behind her. Her glowing eyes are furiously narrowed.
You laugh. "Can't help it if I'm just better than you at this!" You call back and push yourself.
To the spear. Your breath is coming in gulps now. So is hers though. You have the lead by a hand, then a hair. Soon she's almost neck and neck, and she's larger.
You're so tempted to trip her. You'd take almost no damage.
You won't though. You're a hero. You want to be one. That means being good rather than expedient. You want to win right. You push just a bit harder. You can feel your heart about to burst in your chest, and for a moment you feel those long days when you couldn't breath on your own thanks to the cancer.
It almost causes you to stumble. You don't let it though.
Your hand reaches the spear first, and you fall into a roll as you grab it and hold it tight. After a moment you hold it up in the air in triumph.
"Nooooo!" Your opponent drops to her knees in despair and slams a fist into the ground.
You feel bad for a bit, and then she huffs.
"All right, fair's fair." She brushes back her hair and makes a face at the sand. "All right, you have Huntress Thunder-runner at your service." She gets to her feet and grumbles. "You want directions out?"
