I mean, it's not like the options we don't tackle will definitely errupt in crises.
"Luckily, it is not so dire as you might imagine, Atellus. Those partial to Roman interests here in Samnium inform me that the Samnites are stubborn, but not so stubborn they cannot see sense. We need not solve all these problems, only a few, and others will quiet. Turn the Hirpini and Bovianum to our side, and much of our opposition will melt away. Or, should we pacify Aesernia and Abellinum, the tribes will fall in line."
Sertorius assumes that if we win two, we'll put out the other fires, too. It seems more like the choice questions how we will proceed. We help the Hiripini and Bovianum and we will likely work towards our goal of bringing the Samnites willingly into the fold during our social war as we find allies among them to divide them.
Aesernia and Abellinum seem to be there to strike fear into them and force them to be quiet.

(Also, the way Sertorius talks it looks like he will choose the option we don't take, but which is in the same sentence as our.)

We let the priestess live as a testament of Roman mercy, now she has betrayed our trust. Time to fix our mistakes and restore peace. It would be bad for our reputation if we let an enemy of Rome live to kill Romans freely.
Writing to Cicero strikes me as a meta gamey option because we have no urgent reason to communicate with him. Let's just hear from our patron instead.

Nice catch on that quote!
I feel that solidifies my position. Sertorius always names one location in the south and one in the north
Hirpini (S) and Bovianum (N) OR Aesernia (N) and Abellinum (S)
Whichever of the 4 we take, he will go in the other direction. IF we want to attribute even more meaning to this quote ... then it actually tells us exactly what he will do.
We choose the Hirpini, he goes to Bovianum and vice versa. Same with Aesernia and Abellinum.
TBH, that makes taking Bovianum even more tempting..

Well, after so many already voted I suppose that the moratorium is over. And it would be amiss to not vote for my own plan.
(I can be talked out of writing Cicero. I don't really care much about that part.)

Anyway, before we send the message that surrendering to us is pointless because we don't lift a finger to help anyone and before other cities which already surrendered follow suit I choose Bovianum.

(Also making sure that the city has something to eat come winter should take some wind out of this "Rome is a disease" nonsense.)

Interesting about canon legend status,I think only our intelligence has shot to hit legend if we aim for it.

Both Ceasar have some weakness in their build and no one can be perfect in every way.

We should think more of what we want to focus in the future.

Yeah, Augustus wasn't a great military genius. For the heavy lifting in that field he had Agrippa. We don't need to be great at everything, but we need trusted men and women covering our weaknesses.

Well, bandwagoning has started so it's too late for me to really suggest a plan. I still hope we eventually take "The Left Hand Strays" again, simply because I'd like us to have more contacts in our own age bracket and because it would really help if more than one and a half of the six tribunes was any good at their job. But maybe another time.

And yet, you are voting to go to another place a hundred miles or more away from her. :p

Good point. Come to think of it, this may be the entire reason Sertorius is splitting the legion- he has problems so far apart that he can't just do a more "normal" thing like go to the Hirpini with the bulk of the legion and detach a cohort or two to Abellinum to restore a measure of civic order while he finishes the job.

He has to do something about the north, and about the south, at the same time. If either area is completely neglected, he's in trouble. Therefore, he has to split the legion up into two bodies that are both survivable against a medium-to-largeish Samnite warband... which he can do, because one of them can be given to us.

I support this, as it gives us a chance to peacefully integrate a city. We had to punish the first city for killing our messenger, and the second one fought against us. Plus, if it all goes horribly wrong, we can at least get to loot the richest city in Samnium .

Probably counting his lucky stars for the one useful tribune the gods saw fit to give him.:D

Yeah, one of the reasons Rufus performed so well was probably that he was the only one among the tribunes willing to learn when Atellus attempted to teach them last time.
Thing is, we sadly have our own duties, too. Maybe we'll get the chance with the tribunes coming with us.

I figure we'll have at least one more general turn after this but before Nola. We can and probably should train the tribunes and/or legion before then, though we do still want to do the Mars worship thing.

Casting my vote with this one.

Aesernia: As other people noted, showing that Rome can be merciful even when it's smacking down other cities can show that Rome can be someone you can work with, if not necessarily love. Plus, having a secure city to seek haven in is always helpful. One of Caesar's (admittedly many) problems in the Gallic campaign was having his legions nearly starve to death due to the lack of a stable base and food supply.

A Law Beyond the Sword: Atellus is already setting himself up as an impartial arbitrator. Good practice, and helps to keep the legionnaires in line.

Sic Semper: Goes in line with A Law Beyond the Sword. This sounds like a problem that needs to be dealt with now rather than while on the march.

Write Home: Besides a possible spot in future historians' headlights ( :p ), keeping contact with Cicero is not a bad a thing. If anything, having one of the greatest orators to spread good word about your efforts on behalf of Rome could be good advertising via word of mouth. And keeping in touch with our spy master just seems like good common sense; it's good to know what's going on back home while your attention has to be somewhere else.

I assume you're planning for us to liberate the populace of the area from a hostile but Samnite warlord and gain their trust in this way, AFTER said warlord has already killed every Roman citizen in the valley? That sounds tricky.

I think you may be confusing Aesernia with Abellinum (a city in the south, where there have been riots and fires but no massacres, and Visella Tertia is on the warpath) or Bovianum (a city in the north, that has so far stayed 'sworn to Rome' and is asking for reinforcements to help them deal with banditry).

Given the situation in Aesernia, if we don't wind up wrecking some places pretty badly, it's going to make us look kind of schizo:

"Wait, THIS town executed a Roman envoy and got spared, THAT town revolted and mustered an army and got burned to the ground, and THE OTHER town killed every Roman citizen in the valley under the leadership of a terrifying guerilla fighter, and is now the Romans' base of supply?"

Yeah, Aesernia is where we go if we want to build on our new trait and provide the Samnites with more examples of Roman steel. Abellinum is the place to build off existing Romano-Samnite integration and deal with Visellia. Bovanium is the place to show the undecideds the benefits of submission. The Hirpani is about heading off a massive potential setback.

I can think of things that would make me happier, considerably happier, but approval voting this isn't.
