Replacing the Zippo

My second choice pick is Willow in hopes of heading off trouble in the future. so I'll vote for both. Marcie still wins at two votes though.

[X]Focus on the demon that will be coming after Giles soon
[x]Ask Willow about learning magic from Mrs Calendar: a proper teacher would be good for her

I feel I need to admit my own bias against Buffy. Being a hero sucks! But I also think she has terrible taste in men and is far too focused on romance

Sometimes what you really need is an escape from the ridiculousness your life has become. It's easier around Marcie. She was in a single episode of the show. She doesn't expect you to be the Xander that the others used to know, and there's no concerns about what might be in the future. It's fun to spend time with her and just talk about regular stuff without thoughts of what could happen to her in the future hanging around in your head.

Your new talents of observation have made people watching much more fun than it was before. Marcie seems just as delighted to sit beside you and guess about what's going on with them. You do your best to be accurate, but it's easy to get carried away and come up with more and more ridiculous things that's going on. Hey, some of them might even be correct! Life is far stranger than fiction after all.

You almost missed seeing Kendra walking through town. This vampire slayer was destined to have a tragically short life. With Drusilla at full health there was an even greater risk to her. Marcie frowned. "Xander? What is it?"

"That's the second slayer," you blurted out.

"I thought there was only supposed to be one? That it was a whole big deal that way?"

"Yes, but I brought Buffy back when she wasn't supposed to be. The next slayer activated when that happened." You had just forgotten that it wouldn't be Faith who you would be seeing as the next slayer. Guilt churned in your gut. Faith's life had been terrible, but Kendra's had been little better. She hadn't been as lucky as Buffy. She had been raised as a weapon by the Watcher's Council. And if Faith was to become a slayer, Kendra had to die first.

There are a number of ways to play this.

Probably wouldn't hurt to at the very minimum try and stop the Kendra v Buffy fight happen. Honestly warning her about Drusilla I feel isn't super helpful to a slayer, especially a more traditional one like Kendra would likely take that advice as just a fact of life than something more potent to have countermeasures against.

I don't know enough about Kendra and Faith as characters to have an opinion on modifying their narrative.

Xander would look like the manipulator he's trying to warn Kendra about though, of he just shows up out of the blue.

[X]Tell Giles about the second slayer being here
-[X] Ask Marcie to follow Kendra, watch out for her if possible, but also to never be in a position where Kendra could trap or kill her.

Kenda is a slayer she much like Buffy will notice and physically overwhelm Marcie much like Buffy did in canon. I'm not super into this suggested route especially since Kendra probably would've killed or injured Buffy if she wasn't a slayer because she thought she was a vampire,

An invisible enemy also doesn't give visual cues so fighting them is imprecise.

I'm getting on a flight but I'll try and suggest an alternative.

[X] Approach Kendra and inform her that the council has a watcher and actually another slayer here, at the school library, if she wants to meet with our group there and learn what threats are abound and to expect here in Sunnydale.

IE let's try and introduce her to the gang, and we're not lying but we are using the council as a way for her to understand why we know she is here.

I'm also not a fan of telling Marcie to put her life on hold to follow Kendra around. Is Marcie going to school again, or is she still homeschooled and living in Gile's apartment?

[X]Tell Giles about the second slayer being here

I want to give Giles a heads up and let the gang as a whole decide how to handle this instead of acting on our own.

She's going to school again! But still lives with Giles as no one feels comfortable with her possibly living with her parents again. Marcie feels that it's too strange after everything she went through to pretend to be normal, and Giles and Xander worry about her being ignored

Coin Toss New
You hurried down to Giles' home and knocked on the door. The man was mildly peeved at being bothered, but let you in. "There's a second slayer in town."

"I beg your pardon?" Giles asked.

"A second slayer. The next slayer is called whenever the previous slayer dies. That doesn't account for slayers dying for a few seconds before being revived like Buffy was. So there's now two slayers. And the second one is here."

"I-good grief." Giles paled as the implication of my words struck him. His slayer had died. He had thought he had been doing well managing everything unusual attached to her, and yet the truth was she was meant to be dead. Would be dead, were it not for the particularly stubborn boy now standing in his home talking to him. "And you're sure you're not mistaken?"

"I'm not going to say that my visions are perfect, but she fits what I saw way too well." You took a deep breath. "She won't die here, but she will die young." And that stung to think of.

"Where is her Watcher? Why is she here?" Giles demanded.

"She's here to do Buffy's job. When Kendra activated it was assumed Buffy was dead. So she's here to take her position on the hellmouth."

"The Council knows she's not!"

You shrugged. "I don't know what happened there. But there's a second slayer in town, and she doesn't know about Buffy or yourself."

Giles was a reliable man once he got going. He headed out the door to find Kendra and deal with a secondary slayer in town.

Buffy and Kendra got into a fight over Angel, one which only worsened when Drusilla and Spike showed up to play. The girls settled on a truce to hunt Spike and Drusilla. Giles found himself realizing that he far preferred Buffy's liveliness over Kendra's robotic obedience. Kendra was the slayer Giles had hoped to have, but Kendra struggled without orders and had little to live for. You knew that was part of what would kill her. Slayers fell easily when they didn't have a reason to live.

It was bothering you. You knew Kendra would die, but you didn't know what would kill her. You knew that it was because she was too 'traditional' following the Council's rules. You didn't know if speaking up would help at all. If it did help, if you did save Kendra, would Faith never come?

Were you even qualified to make that choice?

You had tried with Jesse, and look how well that had turned out. You had saved Marcie, but things were still so similar to how they had been in the show. You couldn't even split up Angel and Buffy, even if you did get him closer to the group so it was easier to keep an eye on him. Should you even try?

[x]Sit Giles down, point out that Kendra has the survival instincts of a Disney Lemming, and that she's going to die to the first opponent that gets one up on her because right now she'll just give up. Unless the Council only wants one Slayer for some reason, he needs to do his job as a Watcher and get Kendra some help.

I don't see this as a test for Xander's actions. I see this as a test for Giles. He flubbed it last time, so put it directly in front of him that Kendra is struggling at life to the point of being passively suicidal.

Obviously in character we can't choose to do nothing. (Despite how much I love Faith.)

I don't know if we should be sort of putting this on Giles. This Giles has a slayer he has good rapport with Ie adoptive daughter 1, and effectively a second adoptive daughter in Marcie. This Giles is doing a lot more and is more directly connected to the rest of us scoobies.

Kendra is helpful here but who really needs to step up is the Watcher Council. Kendra needs someone in her corner specifically. Imagine calling Westley in now? She needs here own Watcher.

Additionally, Kendra did well with the group, seemed to like the idea of friends and a normal life even if she was always consumed by putting the slayer life first.

Edit:
Apparently she does have a watcher he just never physically shows up, and he is why she is the way she is… so trying to get her Wesley isn't viable.

How about this?

[X] Kendra is a living person, a teenage girl who risks her life for the world, and you can't just give up on her, no matter how difficult that might make everything else. That said, you're limited to what knowledge you have from the show, and that doesn't give you enough to go on, especially with Druscilla being more active. Try inviting Kendra to hang out, either with the entire group or with smaller groups of you, Marcie, Giles, and/or Willow. The first step towards helping Kendra is just being there.
