Quest to Become a Hero

[X] Head to an inn to get a meal for you and the Rabbit before getting some sleep. It is well into night after all.

What I don't understand is why we don't rent a flat. We live here, right? No big hurry to leave...?
I guess it depends on how quickly the MC manages to grow. If he's staying in town for the next year, it makes sense, but if he ends up taking missions outside of the area soon, then he's paying for both the flat and inns.

We never did find out what other adventurers do, that I remember anyway. There might be Guild dorms or something. I think there just hasn't been much opportunity to ask. The receptionist usually has a line of people to help, and the shopkeeper would charge us for any information. The Healer Elf still has me worried.

We might be able to look it up in the library. So far, we have at least 3 topics to research: 1) Elves, 2) Monster Taming & Raising, and 3) Additional Guild Resources(?). The MC needs to let his hands heal for 7 days to fully remove the penalty, but he has only 88 Copper with 50 more due from his current mission. The last inn stay cost 40 Coppers for the room and then 15 Coppers to compensate the innkeeper for the blood-stained sheets.

Maybe we can catch another adventurer and ask them where they're staying? I think the inn prices might keep rising because a lot of people have apparently been coming to town recently. I don't know if it's been revealed why. I should probably reread this quest at some point.

Yeesh, yeah, we need to find some time to ask around about living conditions, guild offerings, and general how to live as an adventurer. Maybe we could find a secure bank account system so we aren't carrying a treasonous scroll around in our highly secure backpack. >.>

Ready for promotion
[X] Head to an inn to get a meal for you and the Rabbit before getting some sleep. It is well into night after all.

You briefly contemplate heading to the Guild to turn in the quest, but throw it aside as your stomach reminds you to eat again. Either way you have to report to the Guild for further examination by the Elf for whatever damage occurred to your soul, though you have not noticed much effect there aside from the persistent headache. Motioning towards your also hungry companion you set about hunting down an inn for the night.

It doesn't take long for you to find a somewhat rundown inn with available rooms and for a fair price even with the influx of travelers in the region. Your attempts to haggle fail miserably, but the price for room and food only comes out to thirty coppers which is a great relief considering your quickly diminishing funds. You settle in for a quick meal before heading up to your room for the night.

---

You awake the next morning to a gentle tapping on your face which, upon opening your eyes, turns out to a hungry rabbit swatting your forehead. Giving it a slight wave you sit up before digging your backpack from beneath the bed and tossing some strips of meat to it which it hastily devours. You give the vicious little animal a few pats on the head before getting ready for the day, the pain in your hands less than the day before.

---

It's not long before you arrive at the, as usual, packed Guild Hall where you slide into the shortest line and start your slow wait. You pass the time watching the Adventurers milling around the Guild, and keeping an eye on your hyperactive companion who has taken it upon themselves to roam the Hall. Before too long it's your turn and you give your follower a quick mental tug to come over before walking up the counter where your usual receptionist awaits.

She gives you a small smile and holds out her hand,

"Ah, good morning Mr. Stitch! I take it you already finished your work? Quite impressive how fast you managed, you can likely expect some additional rewards for that."

You give her a faint nod before handing over your Guild Card which she takes and promptly slots it into the strange device which runs it all. Instead of the usual beeping you are met with a low ringing that seems to fill the room, a few Adventurers look your way in confusion, but most simply ignore it. Your receptionist suddenly grins as she gives you a very subtle bow.

"Congratulations Mr. Stitch, you have performed quite admirably since you joined the Guild. You are now eligible to perform the Promotion Exam to advance to Porcelain Rank thus obtaining all the benefits, and access that comes with it. You may of course remain at Wood rank for as long as you like, but to advance you will be required to finish the Exam.

Any questions Mr. Stitch?"

I'm curious about the exam and Rabbit only needs 2 EXP to level up.

We're currently at -6 to all rolls with an additional -6 for rolls involving the MC's hands and an unknown effect from soul damage. I think we're better off waiting for now.

I wonder what happens if we fail at the exam. Can we just keep taking it over again, or do we have to earn any additional Advancement Points first? Is there a penalty for failing in Guild Points or money?

We just got 94 XP; we can afford to give 2 to our minion.

I'd like to hold off on our exam until we're fully healed.

Can we please name our damn rabbit?

Levelup bunny!

I just started rereading this quest, and already things are making more sense.
It is a dark time in the lands for the Demon Lords' armies march forth seeking to destroy the kingdom. Each day brings news of lost battles, slaughtered villages, or the emergence or horrible monstrosities in once peaceful lands. However, it is also a time of great hope and boundless glory for from these events new heroes are born into the world.
I had been wondering what the conscript was supposed to fight. I forgot all about the Demon Lords.

Here's some information about how increases in rank benefit the MC.
"Well then, welcome to the Guild Mr. Stitch. As of today you are an entry rank adventurer, more commonly known as a Wood Rank Adventurer. You have access to all Wood Tier Quests, beginner's equipment from the Guild store, and the entry level area of the Guild Library.

Please work hard to advance your rank and obtain access to more of the Guild's service. For the sake of Eldast and it's people do your job well.
"Don't be so shocked newbie. It's just simple application of runic arrays, every Adventurer's Guild above at a township level or above is built to this kind of standard, they only really get more amazing as you go up though you're not ready for city work. The earliest you'd be able to find work at a city level Guild would be Copper rank, but I recommend you wait until Iron before upon that, large settlements tend to draw greater dangers and all.
The additional information available in the Guild Library is the only thing that really appeals to me about ranking up right now. I don't think we could take any higher level quests that DON'T involve scholarly work, and we haven't taken classes on how to use the equipment we already have.

I suggest that we use the 6 days while the MC is healing up to learn how to fight, finally take that Stealth course, and try for Evasion again. We'll probably have to take additional jobs to earn enough money, but we can try jobs that don't involve writing to see how well the MC does. I don't think the MC is currently ready for the Porcelain tier.

I found some more interesting tidbits.
Little information is explained to new adventurers joining the Guild as a form of test, non-inquisitive or those only seeking quick fame and wealth will find the job incredibly challenging. Such an act puts the lives of new recruits in danger, but it's better a few overly zealous idiots die than they end up waking a sleeping Lich that proceeds to turn the countryside into the Land of the Dead. Considering you are reading this then chances are you're not a complete fool, so allow me to introduce you to the basics of the Adventurer's Guild.

In order to increase your rank you simply need to complete Quests from the Guild Board, each quest granting a number of Rank Advancement Points according to it's difficulty, but be warned: Failing a quest will result in a loss of twice the amount of Advancement Points that you stood to earn, and if you hit zero then another failure will cause you to drop a Rank even being kicked out of the Guild if you fail while holding Wood Rank and zero points. Do note, newcomers are granted a safety net of two failures before points are lost though these are lost the moment you Rank up.
That example in the first paragraph is pretty specific, and I'm worried that the MC might have already pulled it off. I remember that a lich woke up when the MC discovered the forbidden scroll. Does this mean he's going to try to turn the countryside into the Land of the Dead? Or is that only a "regular" lich, and the God of Death wouldn't do such a thing?

Having a safety net while the MC is healing up is nice. It makes it safer to be more adventurous in choosing jobs as well.

I wonder what happens if we fail at the exam. Can we just keep taking it over again, or do we have to earn any additional Advancement Points first? Is there a penalty for failing in Guild Points or money?
Well one of the great things about this Quest is that when we have questions like this, we're not just stuck with idle speculation. We have to be in the habit of asking them IC, because we're expected to do so and are usually rewarded for it.

[X] Ask what the consequences of trying and failing the exam are.

[X] Hold off on the Exam and go report for your checkup with the Elf.

try for Evasion again.
Considering that we're only 10% from unlocking Beginner Evasion, I think we can knock that bit out just by sparring with our Rabbit. I'm pretty sure that using the Training Hall for that kind of self-study is free, unlike tutored classes.
