Somebody liked a post from this thread like a week ago, or less maybe idk. It reminded me that this existed and also that it's esteemed author was mia, spartan style. I was filled with great joy and great sorrow at once.

I happened to look at SV for the first time in like, months and saw likes from what seemed to be a new reader on... Wednesday, I think? That's like 50% of what motivated me to take another crack at actually writing again.

...this always seems to happen when I decide to reread the quest. I ought to reread it more often. :V

oh shit i was just re-reading this like

yesterday

clearly my awesome psychic energies have brought this back

And I know I saw one or both of you viewing the thread in the meantime, which was probably the other 50% of the motivation. :V

Oh my god I just started rereading this two hours ago and I noticed your last activity was extremely recent, but I told myself not to get excited.

...you on the other hand apparently started rereading almost exactly the same time I started writing.

Spoiler: You may be psychic.

It seems like we all kept this story near and dear to our hearts, judging by all the people recently rereading it n'junk.

Fuck im so hype I can't even get annoyed at the complexity of this situation. LET'S SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS YUI-STYLE BOYS

[] Offer to go blow up her territory a little bit
-[] No, seriously, like find an abandoned building and just woosh it away as a display of power and to provoke the situation

Ok mostly I just want to boom things, explosions solve everything right?

... I'll be back tomorrow, once I reread and remember what the heck is going on.
If you reread the update before this one, there's a lot of summarizing what's going on for the various members of our protagonist's side.

As long as you remember that the main point of this fic is that our protagonist is an adorable combat monster who's staked a claim to a wide area with the help of a mostly retired witch-themed girl who was friends with the person who had the position before her. That person was deliberately murdered by outside forces, along with most of her team, we still don't know who.

Also, the protagonist is not just gay, but super-gay.

That said, I'm probably re-reading the whole thing for fun now, too.

I'mma just drop a vote here

[X] Insist on talking with Honoka Furuhata. Tell Konno to push whatever buttons needed to make Furuhata initiate the meeting, then hope you can manage to convince her to actually communicate.

And then go read back a few updates to try to remember who all these people are

Ok I probably also need to reread a few chapters to remember names and specifically the personalities of group X we're trying to annex here. In the meantime however, I'm gonna try to justify my need for boom.

So it's like this: We present as an unknown hostile, we make a mess and scare them a bit with our raw firepower. This causes them stress.

Then we flip their expectations. We're not invaders, we're neighbors, we've got territory, we've got power, we've got room. They want in, they're free to come, but they follow our rules, because we're the ones who casually blow shit up.

This furthers the Rift in their group, some are distrustful, others like Konno want to take us up on our offer and join up as refugees. Konno works her literal magic, we get our new recruits while the more annoying elements remain behind.

Victory, legit and honest Yui style. No backstabbing or power struggles needed. We have our own sources of information to make this possible. If elements within their group are predisposed towards trusting us, that's on them, their personalities and powers. We were open and honest every step of the way. Also, they started it

But wait there's more

Depending on the nature of the group's split, it might still be possible to maintain connections to the annoying ones. Refugees settle in our city but near the border of their old territory. In a pinch, they can go help their old friends. In the meantime, they are given room to breathe, hunt, less intra-group conflict.

....somethng about jealousy, need to refresh on what that is specifically to see if the rest of this is possible.

TL;DR version: Yui displays force, then backs off with open door. Group near fracturing uses the opportunity to fracture in a hopefully not too harmful way, fractured pieces still connect?

This sort of already happened. Our first contact with this group was because some of the members guilted their most combat powerful but most Grief seed needing member into doing a run on our territory and we shut her down, then were a bit snippy with them when they showed up and tried to apologize and force the blame onto her, demonstrating we can manhandle their strongest member so hard that we don't even hold a grudge against her (and gave her our contact info) plus that we suspected it wasn't her idea to go after us.

Hah! Shades of Tattletale here.

Yeah, basically. :V Konno's magic would totally fit as a Thinker power in Worm, too. Obvious comparison is obvious, the nod to Tt was deliberate. Though, the funny part is that in this case Konno is the one making the logical deductions, while her magic supplies the information to work with.

That said, I almost feel like I should explicitly remind people that Konno is not, in fact, Actual Tattletale. Her magic is narrower in scope (but arguably more potent within that scope) and while they have some personality traits in common, they differ in other ways.

welp i'm convinced

Also keep in mind that the "Informational" threadmarks include summaries for... uh, the first ~60% of the Quest? I really, really need to find a good narrative beat to tie the end of chapter to, because what I'd intended to be the wrap-up for Chapter 3 is still a ways off. Sigh.

And then go read back a few updates to try to remember who all these people are

Yui: Tiny and adorable main character.
Maiko: Grumpy nerd mentor figure.
Koharu: Ally, details not immediately relevant. (Isn't it sad, Koharu?)
Everyone else: Reread the previous update or two, and maybe skim the discussion between this one and the previous.

Most of what's currently relevant (other than the "what to do afterwards" bit, I guess) is about a situation that was just introduced. Which is... helpful? Maybe?

This sort of already happened. Our first contact with this group was because some of the members guilted their most combat powerful but most Grief seed needing member into doing a run on our territory and we shut her down

Yes. But.

Explosions.

Ok you've heard me out so far, so lemme finish.

We basically manhandled Chiro.. Cho... Magnet girl in private. Then we postures in front of a few snippy jerks who basically took nothing from the meeting but that whatsherface failed.

By invading their territory specifically, making a scene and then delivering our offer of safety, we force a decision. They can't just pretend it didn't happen or whatever, instead they're going to have to consider whether or not to take the deal as a full group.

And of course we already know some who want to say yes and others who will inevitably say no. This causes the stressed out group to fracture further.

Hopefully, we can guide the fracture towards an ideal outcome.

And hey, as you said there's precedent!

Here's my rough draft.

It's now 2 in the morning tho, so I'm gonna sleep on this and come up with a second draft in the morning.

[ ] You can work with this - you've mostly been coming up with broad strokes plans and having other people pick apart the issues up till now anyway, so with Konno's help you should definitely be able to come up with something.
-[ ] At the present moment, you're in the unusual position of having too few magical girls to control a large territory. As long as her group is willing to accept your authority and not undermine your wider image - and you don't plan on being unreasonable - having additional people hunting in Nagamioka is in your shared interests.
--[ ] There is the issue of other Tokyo groups potentially wanting to encroach... but that's not particularly different from their current status quo, and they'd have the backing of the rest of Nagamioka, you in particular, when it comes to defense, which you imagine must tip the scales a fair amount.
---[ ] You mentioned that Honoka's preconceptions would be an issue. Could you expand on that?
---[ ] Tamazaki respects force. Would a demonstration of power help convince her of the personal benefits to her?
---[ ] You've made special arrangements for extremely prickly individuals already, in the interests of inter-city harmony - would something like that be necessary or appropriate?
---[ ] For Chizuka in particular, with an entire cities worth of fires to put out, there are a lot more situations where her level of firepower would be entirely called for, instead of a waste. You could see her contributing a lot.

It seems like we all kept this story near and dear to our hearts, judging by all the people recently rereading it n'junk.

I thought about this story so very much, especially in recent days as I looked for PMMM quests to read and kept coming back to this one. The writing is just not only amazing, but also is in the style that I love love love and that I desperately wish my writing skills could eventually be like. Yui is probably also my most favorite character of all time, with a blend of being cute and powerful while also being smart enough to know how to use both to her advantage. Plus her mannerisms and the way she thinks and talks, it's incredible.

My issue with this is that we have info from her teammate that says Chizuka is already close to going kamikaze and causing significant collateral damage. Provoking a fight and stressing them out would also going against Yui's axiom, if I'm interpreting things correctly, and would not be especially honest considering the amount of information Yui already has from Maiko and Konno.

I would prefer a solution that involves finding out more about what exactly is causing their interpersonal conflicts and basically separating the team into people that can actually get along and keeping them far away from each other. We could perhaps even settle them into our territory, paired with our MGs who can get along with them and provide emotional and magical support. Simply put, we should try to learn more about them personally if we want to resolve this situation in a way that Yui would like the most.

Also, I feel like this is a golden opportunity to ask Konno about our own weaknesses. We're ridiculously powerful, especially in esoteric and conceptual ways, but we don't really seem to know what our weaknesses are aside from "can eventually run out of magic" or other brute-force things like that that aren't really weaknesses when compared to other MGs. So we should ask Konno if she can pinpoint any specific weaknesses, whether it's something that can break us down emotionally or something that can be countered in our magic. And if she says that she can't see anything like that, then at least we know she isn't likely to be able to severely harm us in unexpected ways. It doesn't preclude us having weaknesses to other MGs with their own crazy magic, of course, but even getting an estimate on the amount of force needed to overwhelm us is good. Especially if we need to deal with certain a conglomeration-type witch.

Of course, we have to take her word for it and be paranoid about her hiding information about our weaknesses from us, etc, but she seems to be discussing things with us in good faith at the moment.

Alright I'm sold. Mostly.

Counterpoint would be that literally using Konno to scheme behind her team's back runs counter to our image or whatever it was that made us reject her own idea before. Idk, I still haven't gotten around to reading those chapters. It's 2am, cut me some slack! Plus I'm busy dreaming of explosions. Damn you MfD

Important information from the re-read:
You hold up your wand proudly as the crystal flower blooms, folding outward into the counter-rotating multi-beam configuration. With another mental push, the petals open further as the rotating crystals stop, unfold further, and interlock with each other into faceted concentric rings around a thick central spike.
Maiko stares in fascination. "It's not going to start screaming when you fire, is it?" she asks.

The wand looks like ramiel, with it's 4d shenanigans.

Yep. I described it as such earlier. Obviously Maiko has watched the Evangelion Rebuild movies even if Yui hasn't (insert joke about her name here).
The tip of Yui's wand is the same pink as her Soul Gem and has consistent radial symmetry instead of the other platonic solids Ramiel flips through, but otherwise that should give you an idea of what it looks like when it switches modes!
We are pink magical girl Ramiel. Or at least our wand is.

Counterpoint would be that literally using Konno to scheme behind her team's back runs counter to our image or whatever it was that made us reject her own idea before.

"Her own idea" was to set up some of her group members to be killed, so that the the group would fracture, half would go somewhere else, and the remaining portion would seek refuge with us.

There are things there that Yui takes issue with - has to take issue with, given her wish. But I don't actually have a problem with Yui "playing the game", so to speak, as long as she does it with her wish in mind and for the aim of helping others.

We aren't Momoko. We're Yui, and that means that we protect Nagamioka using the skills we have - and one of Yui's strongest skills is politics and maneuvering. There are things we won't bend on - but our mentor is literally a talking walk-through guide and our current love interest is a stalker with a spy sat.

I have no issues making use of information asymmetries.

More information from the reread: The method of killing the previous territory holder was calculating and vicious.

Someone wormed their way into her confidence, ambushed her in a witch's barrier, then left her to die. They didn't finish her off because her magic revolved around fighting other magical girls and they weren't sure they could win even with surprise. However, injured she stood no chance against the witch. Then they lured out the rest of her team with the prospect of saving her (probably helped by having gained her trust) and they (and probably their allies) killed those girls with a more traditional ambush. Again, we don't know who, so we'll need to really be careful.

some of the members guilted their most combat powerful but most Grief seed needing member into doing a run on our territory

We basically manhandled Chiro.. Cho... Magnet girl in private. Then we postures in front of a few snippy jerks who basically took nothing from the meeting but that whatsherface failed.

This actually got expanded upon a bit in the new update--Chizuka's magic is always-on and not free, so while her magic is actually really cheap in terms of value-for-corruption-gained, she needs ~2 Grief Seeds a week just to live. Or something like that, I haven't decided on the exact amount, just that it's high but not unreasonably so for a full-time magical girl who hunts Witches aggressively.

The members who have an issue with Chizuka have twisted this into basically making her feel like she's wasting Grief Seeds any time she's not doing something useful, and to be fair they're not exactly wrong, just jerks about it. Chizuka may, in fact, have decided on her own to "invade Nagamioka", but only out of some desperate and impulsive attempt to assuage the mounting guilt. And for what it's worth, the girls you met at the border weren't the ones pressuring Chizuka. The one you tried to speak with was the leader, Honoka Furuhata, who cannot into social and doesn't trust anyone outside her group; the one who stayed back to observe was Shina Konno, who you are currently speaking with.

Also, Chizuka's not really "magnet girl". :V She controls metal, and she can generate electricity. There's no direct connection between the two abilities, and magnetism is only relevant in that she can make DIY electromagnets and that her preferred method of killing Witches is a railgun of the "yes, this would work for putting holes in warships" variety.

Though, "controls metal" might sound misleadingly harmless. If Konno's magic is Tattletale-ish, then Chizuka is Skitter. With scrap metal instead of bugs. Yes, that includes full proprioception and a degree of implicit multitasking. Her magic treats all reasonably pure metal as part of her body, and the 100m control range applies to both the metal and the meat puppet.

We are pink magical girl Ramiel. Or at least our wand is.

Magical Girl Ramiel-chan is also 4th-Best Girl.

Holy crap. If she hadn't charged straight in and instead just prepped a massive array of railguns to fire at us from range, that could have gone poorly.

I think we definitely want to recruit her, which means that we have even more reason to avoid violently and/or messily tearing her friend group apart, considering her loyalty to her friends.

So, one of the things I've been working on as part of updating the data post is a way to take the character profile info and generate all the BBCode garbage to make tabs and tables the way I want, so that I can edit stuff as the quest goes along and just re-generate the post's coding without having to fight with copy and pasting data into a template by hand or whatever.

Anyway, point is, I did things and they kinda work. How does this look for the character profile stuff?

Obviously lots of actual data is missing. But it's easy to add in, now!

Last updated as of: Chapter 3.34
By the way, people coming back to this quest, the post with actual pictures of the cast is here.

I had to find it by searching my previous posts on the thread with the word 'picture' in them.

An update! Like everyone else from our previous discussion cabal, I was just rereading this after noticing likes being dropped on my discussion here. If that's what actually prompted the new post, @LonelyWolf999 is a champion.

And speaking of previous discussion, I would strongly urge anyone trying to remember what the hell is going on to read the discussion which immediately follows the previous update, as it does a pretty solid job of going over the group we're looking at here and what we know of their internal dynamics as well as sharing several useful perspectives on prospective endgames for this scenario.

I do feel a lot more positive about Kanno than I did at the start of this, though! She's doing a very good job of seeming reasonable and level-headed and is no more murderously backstabby than a bunch of other people we're working with already (which really says something about our choice of associates).

I'm inclined to start out bold and work our way down, with something like this:

[ ] Well, first offer from us, then: We're willing to let the lot of them move into Nagamioka as long as they acknowledge us as boss and follow our rules- we should really type them up or something, but it's nothing too crazy.
-[ ] As long as we're being blunt, we need minions subjects manpower personnel and their group sounds dysfunctional enough that the risk of their even attempting a coup is minimal even if we take them all. We can effectively demonstrate our ability to blow shit up and accompanying posse of loyalists if a show of force would assist in ensuring that no one starts thinking they should be the one in charge, of course.
-[ ] The city's pretty big so we'd break up their team into groups of 2-3 assigned to separate non-bordering regions in order to effectively eliminate all their current interpersonal frictions- no one who doesn't like someone else has to spend any time with that person anymore! And as long as we're being all cynical and political, we might also assign them to work with people we currently think are more reliable.
-[ ] Making Furuhata agree to that would be Konno's problem, of course. And if she deems anyone truly incompatible with our goals for a unified and powerful Nagamoikan magical girl group, and can convince them to go in some other direction without getting them killed, we'll trust her judgement on it.

Opinions on this? It's bold but we know that we're going to be in full scale magical girl warfare sooner or later and I want numbers . Additionally even with the entire group absorbed we'd be at half or less of Nagamioka's sustainable capacity, so that's not really a concern. I know I've backed tearing their group in half in the past and I'm still willing to go for that, but I'd rather start off trying for a perfect run and grudgingly settle for whatever we can get than be unambitious.

This might actually be going for the same thing as @Redshirt Army but his plan doesn't really seem to have an overall "this is my goal" statement in it, so I can't tell.

Or maybe it's four in the morning and I should come back to this later. Yeah, that seems like a good plan.

Fortunately, Chizuka is merely reckless about collateral damage, not willing to intentionally murder a huge number of civilians just to hit one or two meguca.

Also, firing multiple railguns simultaneously is difficult for her. Not impossible, though!

I do feel a lot more positive about Kanno than I did at the start of this, though! Yeah, as dysfunctional as this group is, in terms of backstabbing the Itabashi girls were definitely worse, and that includes the four you recruited. Well, Yumi and Rio at least, it's not clear how personally culpable Fuuka and Kiyomi were.

And if she deems anyone truly incompatible with our goals for a unified and powerful Nagamoikan magical girl group, and can convince them to go in some other direction without getting them killed, we'll trust her judgement on it.

She's... kinda already made that call on who's compatible? Her "ideal plan" didn't involve getting rid of three veteran meguca with very useful magic for no reason, after all.

I happened to look at SV for the first time in like, months and saw likes from what seemed to be a new reader on... Wednesday, I think? That's like 50% of what motivated me to take another crack at actually writing again.
I think that was me, actually. I practically did a double take when I saw this amazing quest that'd seemingly been cut down in its prime suddenly update again.

She's... kinda already made that call on who's compatible? Her "ideal plan" didn't involve getting rid of three veteran meguca with very useful magic for no reason, after all.
She said that she considered that the ideal long-term outcome given a premise that had us agreeing to her initial proposal, meaning that she'd have to manipulate things into falling out in a preferable way in a deniable fashion and generally be engaging in skullduggery. That is not the same as what would necessarily be the ideal long-term outcome given a premise that has us offering open absorption of the group and insisting on not leaving corpses on the floor in the doing.

Particularly given that we're expecting to have some fights coming up and her "ideal" outcome would give us only herself and a pack of newbies instead of any other veterans when we need veterans to counter incoming veteran threats, which she must know will be coming given our situation. In order for that to actually be ideal those veterans have to be so socially toxic that it boggles the mind how they have managed to have a semistable group for the weeks to months that they have, in fact, managed successfully. Or have some particular personality quirk that makes working with us under the circumstances that we'd impose impossible, I guess.

If she's actually making that assertion I'd want a damned clear explanation for exactly why they'd be impossible to integrate, because as far as I can tell right now they'd be trouble and therefore she wants them killed or gone in the same kind of way that other experienced, practical veteran girls we know favor the execution of inconvenient prisoners- a sort of casually brutal social arithmetic of exactly the kind that Yui denies the validity of.

Stick the jealous one with Yui or with one of the weaker but useful meguka. Either let her feel superior or crush her, showing her that she isn't even in the competition.

Keep the leader and her friend together in a nice green pasture, large and comfortable. Give them whatever backup and info they need to be comfy. Then with our superior info, ground control and supremacy, we cause infighting, break them up, separate and assimilate them.

Metal meguka can be a guard for a while, having her 'on duty' should make her feel useful while the people she's around aren't trying to tear her down anymore.

What are the other problems? As a conqueror, we'll need an answer to backbiting meguka. Personally I'm hoping for someone who wished everyone would just get along.
