I think the church could be great allies i think we should don't pull a Spanish republic and forbid them for just being religious schools and also without good replacements ideally we can get Austrian deal and just have them teach certain classes

The church gets an audit like everyone else first, and we see how it goes.

I doubt the organisation is entirely lost, but from the sound of it chunks are very… hm.

The church is a hard target to tackle, since the population is highly religious and the worst crime the padres have done, far as we know, is to be silent about their criticisms of the regime after being threatened rather than voicing support of it.

They aren't like bankers who the people are already inclined to hate.

There's nothing inherently to tackle in a church.

(The idea of church run schools isn't inherently flawed, the problem is that it sounds like they cocked it up in execution.)

Several elements of our local church (some kind of Christianity, from what I can tell) seem flawed and unpopular, and others we haven't heard from at all. We should still take a good look at them in general, since temporal authority shouldn't place you beyond the law, and negotiate with them where the services our theoretically someday functional government should begin and where there public services would end (since both national and church schools sounds like a problem, for example), but we don't really know anything about what they did beyond keep their heads down and have bad schools.

Like, the bankers are bad because they were directly complicit in looting the country and are filled with people who bowed to the last dictator to fill their own pockets, and that's why they're a target we should go after at some point. They're not bad because they're bankers. The clergy seem a bit off because their schools are terrible and corrupt, which isn't on the same level of complicity both on its own and when applied to their entire organisation, which is presumably a lot bigger than the branch currently cocking up their schools.

If all they did is shut up and keep their head down, and their educative abilities were competent, then we'd be outright indebted to them (beyond the general obligations of piety, if the General is so inclined), because they're running the only schools in the nation and clealry nobody else has managed (And we're certainly not any better on the shut up and stay quiet front).

Tack along the church will also have international consequences. Anti clericalism is associated with communism as such doing it will definitely get the US to take note. The same is true with the other revolutionary actions. And I think we all know the rack record of Latin American nations that the US thinks might be communist.

Our background as a military man who fought with America during WW2 and being supported by nationalists should give us some starting goodwill but if we take any revolutionary action we should be careful.

Plus with the pagen communist leader up in the mountains having not fully agreed to put down his arms yet having the church could be a good lever for public support if conflict breaks back out.

We're not making nice wer just recognizing they provide the primary education in this country and if we wanted to play a non grey player we should have picked the radio host not the collating general

I know, we really need to talk to them at some point about sorting that out.
I was talking about what Eldon said, about recruiting them for the specific purpose of pushing back against a political rival.
Which is
pretty foul.

Eh the church is good ally anyway as if they throw up resistance we can take the nuclear option of just asking the pope for them to stop which he would well if the popes were as irl

Making nice with the church to weaponise their influence strikes a foul taste in my mouth.
That's not really what I said? I said that it would be risky to target the church due to both its influence in our nation and what the church and religion symbolized in the cold war, and so acting against them would need to be carefully considered. I also am pointing out that the ERPA have yet to put down their weapons, and if the land reform or peace talks fail, then having the church not hate us would be useful due to their influence among our population and their hatred of the ERPA. And no weaponization is needed. The church is already going to despise the ERPA. Their leader is an anarchist pagan preacher. They will never get along. So if the fighting starts up again, the church will be a natural ally. There is no real weaponizing there unless you call working with the church against a potential shared opponent weaponizing the church.

Edit: And to be clear, I am talking about this as a contingency. It would be ideal if the peace talks work and we are able to come to terms with the ERPA without needing to fight them.
