Powder, Gears, and Blessed Steam - A WHF Engineering Quest

Respectfully I don't think the level of risk was communicated as well as it could have been, not in what information was conveyed but in how it was presented. The option was placed right next to one that was more suicide attempt than reasonable idea. As such, the option seemed a whole lot safer than it truly was. It's the same psychological principle behind why high-end restaurants have ridiculously overpriced items on their menus to get people to buy merely overpriced food.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think you were trying to con us or anything. It's just how things worked out. Still, next time maybe include the dangerous tag on the suboption or have a "Very Dangerous" tag.
May be the options could be color coded by difficulty from greed to red and various shades in between?

Options given are almost always from an in character perspective and so the information used is from an in character point of view. Margaret has no idea how dangerous the work would've been. She's never been in the Forest of Shadows before. She's never encountered beastmen before. Despite that the entire action was still labeled Dangerous. Not slightly, not possibly, and not potentially like the previous appearances of it. Just outright Dangerous.

Fingers crossed that we blam the Minotaur good and don't hit Alric! 🤞

It may have just been good dice rolls but there is the possibility of Aimbot runes on the gun.

If nothing else just remember that the mercenary company would probably have participated in the hunt regardless of our involvement, with all the risks that entails. We will just be in relative safety in town hoping that bad dice rolls won't cause it to disband due to unacceptable casualties.

I'm not worried about the company disbanding so much as Margaret being slain. That's looking like a distinct possibility right now.

Considering the effort that the Runesmith put into that thing, I doubt its just got aimbot runes. Probably got an ability that ensures magical defenses are less effective than normal and lets it hit a lot harder than a conventional pistol.

It may be time to use an action to identify the gun. It would be good to know what those two ??? actually are.

On that note, we know even less about the amulet. I don't even know enough about the setting to estimate whether it can act as an extra life or not.

Interlude: A Hunt Gone Awry III
Your eyes focus onto the ongoing battle between Alric and the bejeweled Minotaur, the mercenary commander himself seemingly almost akin to a toy in front of the oversized beast as his head barely reaches to the thing's knee. In spite of this the man continues to prove something approaching an equal to it as he ducks under a heavy axe blow before slamming a knife into the Minotaur's knee... An act that leaves him terrifyingly open to an overheard swing that draws your own gun up.

A pair of shots, those guiding hands shifting your stance even as you dash forward to get a better angle, and yet the bullets do little more than trace shallow furrows across its arms. Your heart sinks, certain that Alric was about to be split in ha-

His body twists to the side at the last second in a display of agility you've never quite witnessed from him. A twisted, rust covered axe bites into the forest floor. In one smooth motion the mercenary draws a pistol and fires it into the Minotaur's temple drawing a scream of rage from the beast even as the man responsible draws a second knife with a grin.

All around you the sound of massed gunfire rings out again as the closing roars culminate into bodies crashing out into the open, yet more bestial cries of pain and fury sound out only to be joined by the last, defiant cries of humans being struck down.

You want to turn to look. Your instincts screaming at you to just for a second turn around before they charge at you... And then a voice you know too well gives its all to be heard above the chaos, "Not a step back! For our family! For our home!"

Isabelle's words drive the Road Walkers to cry back in ones and twos. Each and everyone of them repeating the same words.

"For our family! For our home!"

Something about the determination in the words... The certainty with which it is yelled out even as one cry is cut short. It is enough to allow you to trust your back to them for the moment as Gromdottir roars out with a trio of shots that send matted fur and blood splattering from the Minotaur's back.

As if out of spite, the adorned beast merely stumbles slightly forward and tosses one of its weapons towards Alric. Even from here you can hear the air being torn apart from the force of it. Your eyes widen as you catch sight of Alric on the other end, feet firmly planted and mid shot. A veil of smoke from the lit gunpowder obscuring his vision while his head tilts down searching for the next in his brace of pistols that you are only now considering to be perhaps too few.

Distracted, the flying axe should be the end of the man and yet you watch wide eyed as he throws himself to the side and it disappears into a shower of splinters in the process of decimating the tree behind it. Even as he slams into the ground with enough force to make you wince the pistol in his hand goes off.

It is an inconsequential thing as there is no fanfare following it. No roar of anger. No scream of pain. Just silence as the minotaur stomps forward once. And your gun raises to fire into the back of its skull... Or at least attempt to... And then the monster simply topples forward.

Your eyes move to Alric seeking some confirmation of the minotaur's death only to find the man shakily backpedaling with another flintlock in hand. Unfocused eyes dart around searching for an enemy that is already dead.

Behind you the sounds of battle are beginning to be replaced with victory cries. Tension and fear being relieved with whoops and cheers.

Slowly you step towards the commander, the man jumping as he back into a tree and whips around to fire a shot into it, "Alric? Its a tree. Can you not... tell?"

Your voice is hesitant but he visibly relaxes as it reaches him, "Miss Margaret? I take it the beast is dead if I'm hearing you instead of my body getting bisected..."

His head turns in the direction of your voice and you freeze as you stare into his eyes.

A familiar, unmoving stone orb takes the place of his left eye.

His right is a cloudy white color.

Neither are focused on you.

"Forgive me for having to ask, Miss, but... How many?"

You turn to look over the battlefield to give the man a proper answer, your eyes finding a forest where smoke and fog linger over dozens of corpses forming a patchwork carpet to cover the grass. Injured mercenaries lean on one another for support. Archers spread out, taking cover behind trees and knocking arrows to bow strings. Handgunners hastily reload their guns. Your heart trembles a little as you spot a bloodied Isabelle and Ralf sitting atop another, smaller minotaur.

"A.. A lot," Your sight settles onto the body of one of the company's veterans who had taken their attacker with them in death, "But far more are still alive."

You hear a sigh behind you, "Hah... As long as most of... my kids... okay..."

You turn just in time to see Alric toppling forward and rush over to catch him with a grunt, your legs almost giving out from the sheer weight.

slamming a knife into the Minotaur's knee...
Bejeweled Minotaur: "I used to be a Beastman warrior... Until I took a knife to the knee."

the mercenary draws a pistol and fires it into the Minotaur's temple drawing a scream of rage from the beast
Bejeweled Minotaur: "Dude, did you just shoot me in the face?! Not cool!"

"For our family! For our home!"
"Nothing is stronger than family!" - Road Walker Dom

Gromdottir roars out with a trio of shots that send matted fur and blood splattering from the Minotaur's back.
Ouch, direct hit to the spine!

And then the monster simply topples forward.
Huzzah! The minotaur is down for the count!

your legs almost giving out from the sheer weight.
Post-victory collapse happens after every battle and Margaret will have to get used to it. And also not skip Leg Day as well.

We gonna need to train that Pistol skills if we are to do any more of this, lol. Maybe buy some armor or a melee weapon or whatever else would contribute to survivability under this system, idk.

Also, we are rich again. Yey.

That is a grim toll, relatively speaking. 1 dead Road Walkers for every 2 Beastmen and a substantial loss in Veterans – unless the survivors gets levelled up from it. Margaret capping the Bray Shaman got her 7 Wealth and assisting the Hunt overall nets her 6 more, that should be enough for most of our monetary needs. 3 Inspirations is definitely a nice boost as well.

I think we are prolly going to do at least one out of four available upgrades to our workshop - engineering, alchemy, security, comfort - but doing all of them is honestly prolly a decent idea, since we are very much in the green, money-wise. I'd vote for that plan.

Other than that, stamping out flintlocks and making progress toward Expertise is always good... Does engineering upgrade for the workshop apply to the gunsmithing? I can't quite recall, but I am sure somebody already asked that before.

Also, do note that we have slain a Slaanbull. This was not a mere bray-herd. It's actually quite rare for Beastmen to get Marks of Chaos from what I remember, so we were facing something very big.

I'm relieved that it worked out in the end.
If we were to do this again, we would really need training.
But I think we can achieve more in a support role (health potions, better weapons, helpful machines).
Assuming we don't have another financial bottleneck and no better option.
We need a good plan for our spending in the near future, the surplus can quickly disappear into thin air with the options we have. (Research costs also a lot, its not just furnishings)

Well we picked cleaning house so we might get some stuff for a lab already or at least ideas. Maybe a journal of recepies(a little too hopeful but we can wish). I say blacksmithing for any tools we get. We get best roles for our steam dream.

Well I wounder what inspirations we got from this battle. Maybe one of those longer pistols but not long enough to be a rifle. We barely did anything to that beastman at range.

Maybe a blind man walking stick.

Oof, those losses hurt, but no named characters died, hopefully Alric's not permanently blind, we're totally uninjured, and we're rich! :D

Now to see the results of our other actions.

Yeah, in a couple of months this herd prolly would have been hundreds-strong, a genuine small threat to the civilization nearby. Roadwardens did good today, although at grievous cost to themself.

Primarily, consequence of not rolling all that great. Gromsdottir is a monster of a weapon; thanks to it, battle-wise we are in the same weight category as a bloody minotaur, rolling 9d6 combat dice - while barely knowing how to shoot a gun.

With guns 3, we'd roll more dice than a Doombull, which is. Honestly a pretty funny mental image, given that Margaret is like, almost-child of not particularly impressive size or physique.

I think that whatever else we do some of that money and a portion of our time over the next few turns should go to improving Margret's combat abilities @Prospalz is right that Gromsdottir is nuts but we cannot keep counting on it, ammunition is limited. We either need to figure out how to make more of it or get a weapon of our own that we can use freely. Also while we are at it some armor would be nice. We do have that smith equipment that dwarfs left behind and it should not be too hard to make say a simple cuirass.
