I must say, I'm less than impressed with the tactical decisions of the Lily's crew.
They're firing the Positron to minimal effect, and manage to blow up their own ship in the process? They never should have tried firing it, it made no sense in the situation they were in.
It's a war, and if there were no risk of anyone dying after you make sure to spare them once, then it would suck the tension out of battle scenes. Something will always be lost in a battle scene and sometimes that means giving up something you previously decided to preserve when the mental or emotional calculus changes. People dying in senseless or frustrating ways is also an element of the genre I always intended to include. I'm not deliberately just killing off characters the moment you get attached to them, but there is always going to be some risk of losing people.Lily is more important than the rose, and that exotic material could be vital. But I also don't want to loose any of our pilots, which makes this one hurt.
Actually, why is that a choice a second time. It makes me feel like our last pick when consequences came up was worthless.

The unfortunate thing is that the Lily's crew is more or less thrown together from whoever was working on the ship at the time or whoever made it off the station and onto it. There likely was someone more qualified to directly command a naval ship in combat than Patel, but they died with the station. They're a bunch of eggheads. They have no tactical experience. You'd think they'd bring in an actual naval officer to run (even a) stealth experimental ship, which yeah, might be boring for the captain, but would have saved them from whatever they were doing in that last battle.
The loss of combat potential if properly used will be important for winning, or at least not losing it, which is a requirement for Nala North to avoid a show trial at best even if she lives until the end.Who are the characters on the Lily that we really don't want to see die?
Fairly confident there were several such people on the Rose. There likely was someone more qualified to directly command a naval ship in combat than Patel, but they died with the station.
