With a pleased expression, Jill said, "It's a pretty simple drink, I'd say. Carbonated tea mixes are a thing, though they're a bit sweeter usually. I don't have much experience with those, they're a classy type that the Barrens don't usually partake in."
Kira listened raptly, nodding her head as she soaked in every word. The tea fizzed a bit as she took another sip and set it down. Probably a good idea to take your time with a fresh carbonated drink.
"Well, I like it, even though I don't drink alcohol very often. I don't usually have time for that on the road, y'know!"
Crushing her cigarette into the ash tray, the last embers glowing faintly, Jill replied, "Really? No drinks during the move between cities or even after shows? I find that very hard to believe."
"Well, it's true. I have a persona to keep up for the fans. I think they'd be very disappointed if they found out that someone they admired indulged in base desires." Kira pouted, her cheeks puffed.
That give Jill pause.
"That's strange, to say the least. You're letting your fans dictate your private life? I thought there was a boundary between personal and public life. I don't think there's a need to cater to them even in privacy, is there?"
There was silence as Kira considered that, drinking from her glass again. A frown formed on her face, yet there was no hostility directed at Jill. Seems she was taking the question seriously.
"It might seem silly to you, Jill. But I truly do appreciate my fanbase, small as it is. They're the whole reason I started singing in the first place. Are you an artist at all, Jill? Do you paint, draw, or anything like that?"
Jill asked, somewhat sardonically, "Does mixing drinks count?"
Visibly brightening up, Kira clapped her hands, "Yes, I don't see why not! So, going from there, don't you feel happy when you see someone enjoy your creation or compliments you for it?"
There was no need to lie. "Of course. That alone makes it--"
"--feel worth it, right? That's how I feel when I see people genuinely enjoy my shows. It always feels somewhat...magical, to me. For one night, I'm floating high, drunk off the atmosphere, and doing what I love while being cheered for it. It's a hard feeling to describe without actually experiencing it, words don't do it justice."
There was a light clink as Kira set down her empty glass. There was a wistful look in her eyes.
"That's how it felt after the first couple shows, anyway. But then I noticed the faces in the crowd, and I mean really noticed them. I saw a man with a cybernetic eye, a huge scar on his face. What happened to him? An accident at his job? I couldn't help but wonder after the show."
Kira suddenly shot up from her stool, unsteadily, and locked her gaze in the corner of the building, "At another concert, I saw a young woman with a prosthetic leg. Still at another, I saw a gaggle of children...they looked underfed. At that point, I realized that that those were the type of people who attended my shows: the pygmies, the downtrodden and forgotten."
This time, it was Jill whose attention was focused solely on Kira. As before, it was as if Kira was brightening up while everything else faded.
"I felt ashamed, Jill. Every other night, I flew high...while they stayed below. As much as I would like them to, my shows only inject so much happiness into people. It fades. The next day, they go to their jobs or home situations. If my core audience consisted of the middle class, it wouldn't be a problem."
Wobbling, Kira settled back into her stool, a glum expression on her face, "But those people aren't my core. It's people like those in the Barrens. How can I be so happy when my fans aren't?"
Jill recalled the words on Kira's poster, "'The star that lights your way', huh?"
With a giggle, Kira turned red, "Yes, well, that's the ideal. I want to give as much as I can to my fans for the feelings they give me. Trying to live up to their expectations is only one small way of repaying them."
With a sniff, Jill set another glass of Manzadilla in front of Kira, "It sounds like you're doing a good job."
With a bow, Kira flashed Jill a brilliant smile, "Thanks, Jill. You're really nice, y'know."
"I get differing opinions on that. Seeing as you're down in the Barrens, I assume that's where you're doing your concert?"
"Yep! Part of this year's cross-country tour. After that, my manager wants to tour a few cities overseas. Apparently, my fanbase extends in some Asian countries."
Impressive. Suddenly, Jill had a thought.
"Wait, isn't it dangerous for you to be walking around alone? Do you have body guards outside or something? The Barrens isn't the posterchild for 'public safety'."
All Jill got was an inquisitive look, "No, I don't think I'm important enough to have security. Besides, I already told you the streets were a bit empty, remember?"
Now that Jill thought about it, that was extremely odd. She'd gotten so used to the conditions of the Barrens that she actually forgot the danger it represented for outsiders, especially celebrities. But to hear that there was nothing on the streets? No beggars vying for Kira's attention, no gang members waiting to pounce? Strange.
"Oh! I got to get ready for the concert. We got things to set up and some minor rehearsal." Gently, Kira set a cred stick on the table as she downed her second drink, "Thanks a whole lot, Jill. Maybe I'll see you after the show, if you're coming!"
Earlier unsteadiness gone, Kira raced out the door, her long aqua hair whipping back and forth in the wind. Then she was gone. The jukebox in corner offered a bittersweet tune to Jill quietly. The spot where Kira had been sitting seemed woefully empty and hollow. The only thing that showed that Kira had truly been there was her signature on Jill's shirt,
KIra Miki
The star that lights your way!
"Hey, Boss, I'm going now!"
"Yeah, see ya tomorrow."
With that, Jill pulled on her jacket just as Gillian waltzed in. He was humming as he buttoned up his work vest. With a hop in his step, he took his place behind the counter, fingers tapping away quickly on his own personal pad. For a second, Jill considered asking what he was so happy about, the words from Dana still fresh in her mind.
"Hey, John--"
The front door blew open with a bang, letting in a gust of cool air. In the doorway stood a familiar face.
"Dorothy?"
"How're you doing, honey? Come on, we've gotta get going to Kira's concert, otherwise all the good spots will be taken!"
At the mention of Kira's name, Gillian looked up in interest, "Kira Miki? You're going to her concert tonight? That's great. I would've gone too, but the tickets were gone too damn fast."
"Sorry to hear that, hon. We had to scrounge around for ours, as well, like a broke man trying to pay for a prostitute."
"R-right. Have fun, guys."
With a nod, Jill allowed herself to pulled outside by Dorothy, who cheerfully chatted. With a sigh of relief, Jill noted that it wasn't particularly cold out tonight. Their breath was misting but there was no wind to exacerbate the temperature into unbearable levels. Thanks to that, people were out in droves. They huddled, their excited chattering barely reaching Jill's ears, but she could tell who they were talking about.
"Seems like the Barrens is looking forward to Kira."
"Are you kidding me? Of course they are! I even told all my clients that I'm busy tonight, that a special person has my all my attention. Some of them got weirdly jealous."
"Phrasing, I think. Anyway, how far is the place?"
Dorothy pointed further down the street, "Only a few blocks away! You know that rezoned area, the place where the knocked down some of the crumbling buildings? Well, it got cleared out last month, and Kira booked her concert to be there. She said the local stadium was to small."
So it's outside. Thank the heavens for the bearable weather then. Jill wasn't sure that she'd be able to handle it if it were a bit colder. Her jacket was pretty thin, all things considered. Dorothy, on the other hand, wore her regular clothing as if she weren't affected.
"Lilim sure have it good. You guys will never get cold."
Dorothy gave Jill a mischievous grin, "Actually, that's untrue. It's just that I made some body modifications."
"...I'm afraid to ask, but what kind of mods?"
"Simple things like being able to see in the dark, some self defense things, and, of course, flexible limbs~."
"R-right."
Turning a corner, Jill nearly smacked into a crowd. One that extended from one end of the street to the next. A simple stage had been erected and people were swarming it. Speaks sat haphazardly around the platform, with black shirted men guarding them. For the moment, there was no one on the stage. Tapping Jill on the shoulder, Dorothy motioned towards a spot where there was a break in people.
"I halfway wish she'd done the stadium. I haven't had this much men surrounding me with bated breath since--"
"Alright, alright, let's just find a spot somewhat close to the stage, yeah?"
As she said that, an excited cheer broke out from the crowd. A familiar splash of aqua hair jumped out at Jill. Behind Kira, more black shirted men carried some instruments and set them down. Even Dorothy was jumping up and down in excitement, prompting a small smile from Jill. Looks like Starpower's mere presence in enough to stir these people up.
